How dangerous is Flashback Trojan and how do I protect my iMac with OSX 10,6?
I just recently updated to 10.6.3 which, as far as I know does not have built-in protection from stuff like Flashback Trojan. When I click on "Software Update" all I get is an inactive, blank screen. I was told that if I clicked on that I would be able to download Apple's patch preventing this from infecting my iMac. HELP!
Download and apply the latest Combo updater for OS X 10.6: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
After doing this, try using Software Update again to ensure everything is up to date. If it still doesnt work, then at least do the following:
1. Open the program "Java Preferences" in the Utilities folder.
2. If it gives you a warning about needing to install Java, click Not Now and stop (you're done).
3. If it opens without giving you any warnings, then download and apply this update: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1516
Doing this will update your system and patch the Java vulnerability that allows this hack to happen.

Hi there, I've been using an A3 Wacom Intuos tablet and pen for many years now on a 2006 iMac for my illustration work, but I cannot get them to appear or work on my new iMac with OSX 10.9.4. I think they are the original Wacom Intuos tablet and pen. Does anyone know if they are just out of date now and aren't supported on the new OSX 10.9.4? Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I need to work and it's frustrating!

I have done as you suggested; I uninstalled PSE 11 and set my wife's account up as admin and reinstalled from there. Still have the same problem with my wife's account, but when I went to mine it is working correctly. Any ideas on why that would be? I'm sure it should work on both accounts. I have 2 accounts on my Mac Mini running OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and it works on both.

I have the photographer plan With Photoshop and Lightroom. Now suddenly The creative cloud app says that Lightroom isn´t installed. It is and how do i fix this. I don´t want to loose any pictures. Tried logging in and out. Also restarted my Imac with no luck.
This has nothing to do with your pictures. As long as LR works, nothing happens. The CC app merely has lost an entry in the installer database. Would a reinstall fix it? Sure. Is it necessary? Not really (until the next version or update). So unless you have too much time to spend or something isn't working, I'm sure you can find more interesting things to do with your tiem. Otherwise use the cleaner tool and get to it:

Yes you can. In iPhoto create a Album with the photos you want in it. You can drag them from your Events folder. In iTunes with your iPad connected go to Photos by cliking on your iPad. You can then select the album or events you want. -

You have to make a new image and turn this funtion off if you want to make sure the video stays private on your computer.
If you send the video to another computer, the user will have to enter the password. -
How to get Gopro studio on older iMac with OSX 10.6.8?
I have an 06' iMac with OSX 10.6.8 that can no longer update to newer versions. I recently got a Gopro 4 Silver only to learn that I cannot download the Gopro Studio editing software to my outdated OSX. The software requires a minimum of 10.8. Can anything be done to put the software on my iMac? If not, will any of the Apple software edit my Gopro media files?

to run an OS X version as new as Mountain Lion 10.8.5. Most can't run Lion 10.7.5. So the
answer would be to find a newer model computer that can run Mountain Lion, or newer...
Depending on what kind of files the GoPro generates, the ability to edit, alter, and use them
will vary. Certain editing software exists, but the details of what is still available for older OS X
and your configuration, is sketchy at best. That is one of the reasons why the maker suggests
their GoPro device and/or software needs a later OS X system. Major upgrade. (OS + Mac)
The information on various Mac products can be read online at sites such as Everymac.com
where they show all models of a product name, and info about almost every mac built. To
use resources to see what kind of later computer may be affordable, available, and run the
software you already have, may take time. To keep a useful older computer at the best-last
state in OS X, with its software, is helpful if you have other applications that work for you.
Then you'd just need to find a niche product, such as a MacBook Pro from 2010; perhaps
a Late 2012 model 13-inch. Maybe even an earlier MacBook; these are no longer made.
Some reputable sellers offer restored or repaired older vintage Macs. For newer ones
that can run later Mac OS software, the Apple Store has their refurbished pages. These
are fairly current. Older ones no longer under any AppleCare plan, can be found at
shops that repair them for a living; or used. Be careful when buying used products, read
to see if there were issues, damages, and be sure to get the accessories & system discs
if the model is old enough to have DVDs included. Oh, be sure if you get a used Mac that
is newer, did not ship with install DVDs, the original owner has not tied it to their AppleID.
A promised upgrade in a used Mac, to Yosemite, does you no good if the computer is
tied to a former owner, and their password and their Apple ID accounts.
In any event... to use that peripheral will require a newer computer & later OS X version.

I'm considering FileVault usage on an iMac with OSX 10.6.7. Wanting to know more about strengths and weaknesses of Filevault with Time Machine, Parallels and Carbon Copy Cloner. Any negatives to consider before flipping the switch? Any information ?

FileVault encrypts the user's home directory only - it is basically an encrypted disk image that is automatically opened when you log in and closed when you log out. It does cause disk accesses to be a bit slower so it isn't a good idea to use an encrypted account with sound or video or large graphics files. I have no experience with it with Parallels Desktop but suspect that you'd notice a bit of a slowdown. Note: in the User's directory you'll see a Shared Folder. Since FV only encrypts the user's directory you can put data you don't need encrypted in this shared folder which won't be encrypted.
TIme machine impacts, and whether TIme Machine volume will also be secure?
There are issues with TM and FV but how extensive they are with Snow Leopard I can't say, once I realized that TM and FV hadn't substantially changed between 10.5 and 10.6 I stopped dealing with it. When FV and TM were first introduced my testing led me to recommend using CCC or SuperDuper! for backing up.

Since FV is nothing more than a disk image - and disk images can fail - there are several problems with FV in my opinion. If an encrypted disk image fails it isn't possible to access any of that data. If you don't have a recent (undamaged) backup of the disk image and/or recent backup of the data within the disk image you are in a world of hurt. This isn't just a warning of possibility - this is a real danger that I've seen all too often at the shop where I have worked part time for a number of years.
At this time I strongly recommend that people who have sensitive data keep that sensitive data segregated from their general data and encrypt only the sensitive data or use other methods of locking it down such as saving on an external drive that is kept in a safe. Call me paranoid but I don't even keep all my sensitive data in one encrypted disk image. I use multiple disk images and keep multiple sequential backups. That way I might someday find that my up-to-date investments disk image won't mount but (a) I can go back a week to a backup and (b) that won't impact my up-to-date business records because those are in a different disk image -

I am using a new imac with osx lion 10.7.5 and have just bought Apple iLife 11 on dvd so that I can install iWeb and iDVD, as macs no longer ship with these apps. When I click on install iLife I get a message saying "iLife.kpg was signed with an invalid certificate.
Next problem is that when moving through the installer and get to custom install, as I only want to install iDVD and iWeb, I am presented with the option to install iDVD, Sounds & Jingles and iWeb, but not sure what is going on with the other 3 options iLife Support etc, they seem to be greyed out but still look like they may install over the top of the newer versions already on my imac. Is it ok for me to just go ahead and hit install? Or do I have a problem?Yep, just install iDVD (plus sounds and jingles) and iWeb if you want it (but note that iWeb apparently won't work if you upgrade to Mountain Lion).
Then use Software Update to get any late iDVD updates. -
Does anyone else get a Netfix window popping up unexpectedly? I have an iMac with OSX 10.6.8 and Safari browser version 5.1.10. It only happens when I go to a specific local news site, and it is only a Netflix window that opens up. I do have a Netflix account.

If you purchased it from Apple, you are covered by the warranty - take advantage of it and call them as that appears to be a graphics issue.

Recently my IMac with osx 10.4.11 has been running extremely slow. It takes forever for Safari to switch screens. You can hear the computer constantly working. To the point where I have tried restarting.I have run Sophos antivirus software and have found nothing. Any suggestions?
First remove the antivirus software, it's possible that could be part of your problem! Slow Mac's can be caused by many different issues, including failing HD's, a HD that is too full (OS X really likes to have about 10-15% of the HD available), insufficient RAM, etc.. To troubleshoot your problem I'd recommend looking over 25 Ways to Speed Up Your Mac.
