How DHCP works?

Guys, I have basic doubt, how does DHCP works?

hi,
How DHCP Works?
Before learning the process through which DHCP achieves it’s goal, we first have to understand the different messages that are used in the process.
1. DHCPDISCOVER
It is a DHCP message that marks the beginning of a DHCP interaction between client and server. This message is sent by a client (host or device connected to a network) that is connected to a local subnet. It’s a broadcast message that uses 255.255.255.255 as destination IP address while the source IP address is 0.0.0.0
2. DHCPOFFER
It is DHCP message that is sent in response to DHCPDISCOVER by a DHCP server to DHCP client. This message contains the network configuration settings for the client that sent the DHCPDISCOVER message.
3. DHCPREQUEST
This DHCP message is sent in response to DHCPOFFER indicating that the client has accepted the network configuration sent in DHCPOFFER message from the server.
4. DHCPACK
This message is sent by the DHCP server in response to DHCPREQUEST recieved from the client. This message marks the end of the process that started with DHCPDISCOVER. The DHCPACK message is nothing but an acknowledgement by the DHCP server that authorizes the DHCP client to start using the network configuration it received from the DHCP server earlier.
5. DHCPNAK
This message is the exact opposite to DHCPACK described above. This message is sent by the DHCP server when it is not able to satisfy the DHCPREQUEST message from the client.
6. DHCPDECLINE
This message is sent from the DHCP client to the server in case the client finds that the IP address assigned by DHCP server is already in use.
7. DHCPINFORM
This message is sent from the DHCP client in case the IP address is statically configured on the client and only other network settings or configurations are desired to be dynamically acquired from DHCP server.
8. DHCPRELEASE
This message is sent by the DHCP client in case it wants to terminate the lease of network address it has be provided by DHCP server.

  • How DHCP scope will work between two Wireless contoller

    Dear All,
I would like to inform you that we are going to deploy Wireless Network with redundancy of Wireless LAN Controller and we need to figure out how DHCP scope would work during fail over  any one of Wireless LAN controller and DHCP Server .I have two site where Two Differenet DHCP Server would be palced with different DHCP socpe. So My query is that if Site-A(according to attached diagram) DHCP Server and controller fails how Wireless  client will take the DHCP scope from Site-B(according to attached diagram) DHCP Server as it has been configured different DHCP Scope. Can any one tell me whether i can configure same DHCP Scope at Both Site's DHCP Server.
Is there any way to configure same DHCP Scope for two sites. For your infromation client wants two Different DHCP Server with different scope for Two Site and how redundancy would be ensured if any one WLC or DHCP goes down.
I am eagerly waiting for your reply as early as possible. Please help to figure out the solution.
I am going to attached Sample Design for your reference.
    Thanks and regards
    Erfan

    Erfan:
My query was that if one wireless client already associated
WLC-A with one IP block of Location-A (DHCP Server) using SSID named TEST. If DHCP-A or WLC-A goes down then how that same client would associate with WLC-B and get the IP Block from Location-B (DHCP Server) using same SSID name TEST.
In this case the clinets connected to the APs in location A will disconnect (if the WLC went down) and they have to connect again when the APs join WLC-B. They will get IP address from location B block then.
If DHCP went down when new clinets try to connect the primary DHCP is down so they are referred to the secondary DHCP. connected clinets will disconnect only when their DHCP lease times out. They will try to renew but the DHCP server is not available. They will disconnect then and connect again and getting IP from B site.
    1. How we will create same policy for that two different block using same SSID.
    what policy? where?..etc?
    2. client would be connected with Access point but they will get the IP through VLAN interface of the Controller and we have to assign IP helper address in the interface vlan.So how the the client would get the IP block if we assign two IP helper address in the interface vlan in case of failure of DHCP and WLC of one location.
    3. If we assign two IP helper address then which DHCP Server will release the IP for client and we can make delay between two DHCP Server to release the IP address.
If two IP helpers are configured the switch will send them both the client's request and they client receives two offers. The clients chooses one of the offers. Usually the clinet will accept the faster DHCP server to respond.
If you are using the DHCP on the WLC then it is different. The WLC will always try to reach the primary DHCP server as long as it is reachable. If the primary DHCP is not reachable then it falls back to the secondary DHCP server.
Note that when you use IP helper then you usually disable DHCP Proxy feature on the controller. Do you have it disabled?

  • User tracking ip/host resolution how it works

I know usertacking using layer 3 devices to resolve host name/ ip address. on my case devices are behind the firewall and the devices not on my router arp table . the arp table is on firewall show the mac. however interestingly usertracking still resolve the name.the firewall is not even a cisco brand. that is very new to me and I im thinking may be i am not fully understand user tracking. can some one explain to me. thanks in advance

I've been meaning to write up a doc on how UT works.  In the meantime, for layer 3 resolution, UT does a few things.  Historically, it has always tried to acquire ARP entries from layer 3 devices in the network during its acquisition cycles.  A layer 3 device need not be a router.  It can be a 3560 switch, for example.  Firewalls (even Cisco firewalls) are not supported for this.  Using this layer 3 info, UT will perform a reverse lookup to get a hostname for the end host.
The next thing UT does to get layer 3 information is to listen for UTLite updates from Windows hosts.  These updates will contain the MAC address of the client, the username logged into the client, and the IP address of the client.  UT will not do a lookup of this information to get a hostname, however.
Finally, UT can query switches for DHCP snooping details to find an IP address.  This is dependent on dynamic UT being enabled, and that the end host triggered a MAC notification trap to be sent.  Of course, the switch to which the user connects must have DHCP snooping enabled.  Again, UT will not perform a hostname lookup on this IP.
My guess based on what you describe is that you have some layer 3 devices in your network like 6500s, 3560s, 4500s, etc. that have some ARP entries populate, and UT is using these to get IPs.  That assumes you're seeing hostnames.  If you are only seeing IPs, then you could be using UTLite or dynamic UT with DHCP snooping.

  • Question on how networking works with new Macbook Pro

    Hi,
I have a question about how networking works with my new Macbook Pro. This is my first laptop so am new to mobile computing. I am about to configure it to replace my desktop which uses a wired DSL connection. Once I have my Macbook Pro configured to run off the DSL modem, what happens when I take this computer to a location that has ethernet? Will just plugging in the ethernet cable be enough to get on line? Or is there further configuration work that needs to be done?
I used a Windows laptop from work and all I had to do was plug it in to a hotel ethernet cable to get on line. However, this laptop was never configured to run on my DSL network so I am not certain if that makes things more complicated.
    Thanks for your help!

    Hi
Your MacBook Pro should just work when plugged into an ethernet connection.
Just check something, Open Network Preferences, you can select it from the Airport icon in the menu bar.
In the left-hand pane click on Ethernet and just check that it is set to configure using DHCP in the right-hand pane, that's it.
So when you plug in the ethernet cable it will ask the router for an IP address and off you go.
I assume that any system you plug into will use DHCP rather than static IP addresses. If it is a static IP address, you will need to manually configure the ethernet settings by inputting the IP address and subnet mask info plus DNS servers.
Usually it is done with DHCP and you don't have to do a thing and likewise your home DSL is DHCP?
If not then you will have to change your settings, make a 'Hotel' setting which you can use when in hotels and keep your 'Home' set-up for when you are at home. In the pull down menu select Edit Locations to add new ones.

  • RV042(G) PPPoe and DMZ how it works

There is some information about RV042(G) PPPoe and DMZ which not documented and even not published in community forum:
How DMZ works if WAN1 configured for PPPoe (e.g. ADSL) uplink port with dynamic address, gateway and dns assigment (and WAN 2 configured for DMZ).
DMZ port got PPPoe pass trough to WAN1 uplink port?
DMZ port is behind a ppp stack?
DMZ port is behind a nat?
I think DMZ port is not behind a firewall.
How I configure DMZ port with static address if uplink wan port has dynamic address?
How I configure DMZ port with static address if uplink wan port has only one dynamic address (assined at authentication) not a all address range?
How change operation above if WAN1 configured for direct ethertnet connection with DHCP address assignment (and WAN 2 configured for DMZ)?
Anybody can explain for us. Thanks for any authentic answer.

Any data alongside the TM backups on the same volume cannot be backed up. To backup data that resides on the same physical disk spindle as TM backups you MUST separate the data to be backed up from the TM backups. This can be done by partitioning the disk into two pieces. Volume1/partition-1 can be "Time Machine Backups" and Volume2/partition-2 can be for your other data.
In the TM Pref panel's Options... tab simple ensure Volume2/partition-2 is not in the exclusion list.

  • How to work with 360 video?

I am new to AE and am trying to work with a 360 equirectangular video I shot with a Freedom 360 and 6 go pros.
Are there any tutorials on how to work with 360 spherical videos? Do I need to download additional plugins?
    Thank you,
    Phil

    Phil,
Of course, the image needs to be big for this, but the plugin you would use is CC Sphere.
Drop your movie into a composition and apply CC Sphere to the video.
Then set the Render option in the effect to "Inside".
Under Shading set Ambient to 100% and Diffuse to 0%.
Then scale inside the effect until the image fills the screen.
Then you'll be able to use the Rotate Y controls in CC Sphere to spin around inside your video!
You can also add Optics Compensation and Reverse the Lens Distortion to straighten out your image.
Let me know if you have any questions!

  • Hey Guys, from Germany. I want to connect my iMac 21" with my Tv just for fun. Does anyone know, how it works. With a Hdmi adapter?

Hey guys! I want to connect my Imac 21 " with my Tv just for fun. Does anyone know , how it works?

Selecting the correct adapter and cable depends on which year model iMac you have and what inputs the TV has?
Check the User's Guide that came with your iMac or your Spec's at > Apple - Support - Technical Specifications
to see if your iMac has a Mini-DVI or Mini DisplayPort and then select that adapter with the correct connection for the TV.
Example: if you have a 2010 or 2011 iMac and an HDMI ready TV, then you would want the > Moshi Mini DP to HDMI Adapter with Audio Support - Apple Store (U.S.)

  • I was looking at the "Find my iPhone" app and I have a doubt regarding how it works for the macbook. In order to detect the location, the macbook should remain signed into iCloud. What if the thief logs out of iCloud. Would we able to locate the macbook?

I was looking at the "Find my iPhone" app and I have a doubt regarding how it works for the macbook. In order to detect the location, the macbook should remain signed into iCloud. What if the person who has stolen my macbook logs out of iCloud.
It should work fine for iPhone/iPad because we can enable "Restrictions" to prevent the user from signing out of iCloud. Do we have simialr settings for the macbook?
    Thanks,

If it's not on the device list, it indicates that someone has gone to Find My iPhone on icloud.com and manually deleted it from the device list (as explained here: http://help.apple.com/icloud/#mmfc0eeddd), and it has not gone back online since (which would cause it to reappear on the device list; Find My iPhone has been turned of in settings on the device; the iClolud account has been deleted from the device; or the entire devices has been erased and restored.
Unfortunately, there's no other way to track the phone other than through Find My iPhone.  You could call your carrier and see if they would blackliste it so at least the theif couldn't use it.

  • I need to change my apple ID because I'm changing my email address. I'm worried that when I do, I'll no longer be able to use my first generation apple tv unless I change the apple ID there as well.  Does anyone know how this works??

I have to change my apple ID because I'm changing my email address. (I have a Comcast address and am switching to U-verse) I'm worried that when I do, I'll no longer be able to use my first generation apple tv unless I change the apple ID there as well. I'm also trying to find out if changing my apple ID is going to interfere with getting my itunes content on my computer and my iphone.  Does anyone know how this works??

My iTunes appleID is an old defunct e-mail address - it does not have to be functional.
Do what Winston says to ensure you keep getting correspondence related to that ID.

You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions. To do this, click here and pick a method; if that page doesn't list one for your country or you're unable to call, fill out and submit this form.

  • I pad 2 updated to iOS 6.1.3 and now wifi is greyed out. Apple support engineers say replace but my warranty exited 09/12. Funny how it worked perfectly fine before the update.

I just updated to6.1.3 and now my wifi button is greyed out. Apple support said it is a hardware issue. Funny how it worked just fine on the previous iOS. Now apple wants me to buy a replace not because my warranty expired 09/12. Seems to me like ios6.1.3 was an update to sell more products. Tried all suggested fixes with no success. With all the noted issues with ios6 there may be another class action lawsuit coming. Apple tech senior advisor unwilling to help. First advisor told me just buy a new I pad. Second advisor wants me to pay for a replacement. Can someone explain to me how an apple approved software upgrade that damaged my i pad is classified as my fault. I've seen some shady selling techniques but this one takes the cake in my book. Anyone have the contact information to higher up executives in apple for me to speak with about my issues?

    Have you check the following?
Verify that airplane mode is off by tapping Settings > Airplane Mode.
Reset the network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Note: This will reset all network settings, including Bluetooth pairing records, Wi-Fi passwords, VPN, and APN settings
Ensure that your device is using the latest software.
If your issue is still unresolved, perform a software restore in iTune

  • How IE works for  flat file

    Hi all:
As we all know that, when IE gets a idoc's service name from SLD, then use it with idoc's message type and Idoc type to do receiver determniation, what about flat file ? how can we know its Service name and interface name  if there is only a flat file on FTP?  how IE works for Flat file ?
         Couldn't thank you more

    Hi,
For any idoc scenarious, you would use business systems rather than business service which is stored in SLD. So the IE would fetch it from SLD at runtime.
For file based scenarious also, you can create business system as type third party and use the same.
    Is that answer your question?
    Regards
