How did I accidentally convert all my images to 8-bit?

Hello,
Five minutes ago, I verified that my image in Camera Raw prior to importing into Adobe Photoshop CS6 was in 16-bit mode.
Immediately after I imported it into Photoshop and it became a .psd document, I verified once again that it was still in 16-bit mode.
Then I created a duplicate layer, selected the sky, and created a layer mask from that selection.
No big deal.
NOW I SEE, per the below, that I am in 8-bit mode.
Why is that?
Is it true that ANY MASK I create forces the entire image into 8-bit mode?
Thanks!

Thanks fellows.
I'm working in CS6 with a MacPro desktop tower with 18 gigs of RAM.
I will be in a remote location planting trees as part of a project for the next several days, so I will return to this next week and bring more helpful facts to the discussion after checking my History Panel.
When I am in Camera Raw, I make my desired changes and then click "Open", I thought all documents become a PSD document in Photoshop for me.  Perhaps I am mistaken in that regard and have inadvertently omitted a few steps in my described workflow.
When I check that initial .PSD image, I recall it saying 16 bit, which is good.
I will check the history panel on a test image upon my return so that we will have more facts next week.
Thanks!

  • How do I batch convert all my images to B&W?

    Hi everyone.
    I have about 800 images from a wedding. The client wants a copy of all the images in B&W as well. I selected all the images, pulled down the monochrome mixer, but it only cdhnages one image at a time.
    I also tried to use the lift and stamp tool, but even tho I have multiple images selected, it still does one image.
    I do not have primary on.
    Can anyone help?
    I would like to just click once and have them all convert.

    figured it out, thanks! Didn't see the stamp all selected images in the lift and stamp hud

  • To convert an rgb image to 8 bit grayscale

    Hey,
    I need to convert an rgb image to 8 bit grayscale image as the image is being acquired, im using the imaq create VI, which has an 'image type' terminal which allows the choice of image to be selected.however this isnt working. any solutions?
    also
    Im trying to make a image constant for the imaq subtraction VI, so the this constant image is subtracted from each image as its acquired.what would be the easiest way of doing this, without having the user specify the same image path each time? thanks.

    Not sure what you mean by extracting a plane?
    Here is a VI that will convert an image to 8-Bit.  This paired with the grayscale one will get the desired result.  See example.vi below.  Order that they are applied does give slightly different results.

  • TS1409 How do I mass convert all my videos in iTunes From FLV to MP4?!!

    My problem is a simple one that YOU will, sooner or later, face---else you already faced it.  It is the DREADED mixed media from You Tube.       HOW DO I MASS CONVERT MY ITUNES FLV VIDEOS TO MP4 VIDEOS.  If MP4 will play Video & Audio---why do I need FLV files?
    1.  I have an old APLINE IDA-X001 Digital Automobile Receiver that I have ported my iPOD Classic to via their Alpine Proprietary High Speed USB2 Cable.
    2.  I have 800+ You Tube music videos from the 80s (what can I say, WE ARE ALL ENTOMBED IN THE MUSIC OF OUR YOUTH and I am a couple of months older than Steve Jobs---Double Nickel or should I say YEAR ZERO of our lord Rock & Roll!!!).  When driving, I just want to hear the Audio Files from my iPOD.
    3. 90% of said You Tube videos are in Flash Video (FLV), 10% are MP4.
    4. You can only play FLV on outputs that have videos, MP4 videos can play in video mode else audio only mode---THEREFORE I NEED TO CONVERT all my FLVs to MP4s on my iPOD Classic (160GB).
    5. Yes, there are a handful of FREE Video Converter programs out there and the one I have AV8 will convert FLV to MP4 one file at a time...drip,drip,drip!!!
    6. I have 800+ Music Videos---I will have died from old age before my iPod is filled.
    7. My DESIRED END STATE is to flip a software switch and have all my iPOD FLV videos magically convert to MP4
    8. You Tube Download Modality:  I find a song I like and Download it to RealPlayer.  Once downloaded, I PAINFULLY convert it to Ipod (can't do more than 9 songs at a time). Once in iTunes, I sync it to my iPOD classic and bam---my videos are in my my iPOD.
    9.  Currently, the only songs that play on my iPOD are those I've purchased from iTunes.
    10. Whudda I Do?  The Apple Tech guys haven't a clue. Also. If I can only do it manually (I've got movies mixed in as well), how do I set up an MP4 folder and then only transfer that folder on to my iPOD?!!!

    The sync process for contact information, calendar events and bookmarks is bidirectional.

    The sync process for iTunes content and photos transferred from your computer to the iPhone is in one direction only and can be synced with iTunes on one computer only.
    iTunes includes an option to transfer content purchased from the iTunes Store only from an iPod or iPhone - not for content acquired elsewhere that was transferred from iTunes to your iPhone.
    You need to transfer your iTunes library from your Windows PC to your Mac.

  • How did we survive without all these various Frameworks before now??

    Struggling here trying to get my head around the Spring framework and Hibernate.
    Just wondered how did we do anything before all these came on stream ?

    Before that we wrote our own frameworks, and we still do from times to times.

  • How do I convert all RGB images to CMYK for PACKAGING - InDesign CC?

    I understand that they can be exported as a CMYK pdf - but I'm splitting a project with another designer and she needs to get me all of her files - many of which are RGB - need them CMYK.  Thanks!

    You can't convert the color mode of links during packaging -- and you don't need to, most likely. Why do you think you must have CMYK? Unless you know the correct output space now, and have no plans to re-purpose the file in the future (and even if those things are true and you don't need to make post conversion adjustments to the color) there is no advantage, and plenty of disadvantage, to converting to CMYK before export.

  • How did I export a High-Res image from my FCP Project?

    I know how to export still images using Quicktime Conversion. But it is possible to export High Resolution images from my FCP Project. You help would be much appreciated

    Wow man, that's not the most efficient way to get stills. You can do this in FCP, it's easy. Here is what you do....
    Go to EXPORT and then USING QUICKTIME CONVERSION
    You will see a dropdown box in the right corner that says FILE FORMAT. Change that to STILL IMAGE.
    Underneath you can choose which type of still Image you would like to convert the frame to (JPEG, PIC, PSD, etc) You can also change the quality
    Hope this helps.

  • How to convert 24bits png image into 8 bits image

    Hi,
    I have gone through some of threads in this forum on changing color bits. But, I still can find right way to change my image (24bits) into different color bits(8 bits). The reason i want to change the color bits because I am getting a GIF image from map server, convert it into PNG format then rescale then into size of mobile phone screen.The PNG image is really has large data length , so the it took a while to load the whole image on screen.
    Note : The following code is taken from few threads in this forum and i have modified it to suit my application.
    I have no idea about Java2d...any help really appreciated...Thanks in advance!!!
    My code is as follow:-
    public File Scale(int width, int height, BufferedImage ImgSrc)
         try
                   //BufferedImage bi = ImageIO.read(ImgSrc);
                   //int w = bi.getWidth(), h = bi.getHeight();
         //Image oldRescale = bi.getScaledInstance(i, j, Image.SCALE_SMOOTH);
         BufferedImage Rescale = rescale(ImgSrc, width, height);
                   //ColorSpace cs = ColorSpace.getInstance(ColorSpace.CS_GRAY);
                   //ColorConvertOp op = new ColorConvertOp(cs, null);
                   //Rescale = op.filter(Rescale, null);
         File outfile = new File("map.png");
                   ImageIO.write(Rescale, "png", outfile);
                   BufferedImage fromFile = ImageIO.read(outfile);
                   ColorModel cm = fromFile.getColorModel();
                   System.out.println(cm.getClass() + ", bits/pixel=" + cm.getPixelSize());
              catch(Exception e)
                   e.printStackTrace();
              return new File("map.png");
         public static GraphicsConfiguration getDefaultConfiguration()
    GraphicsEnvironment ge = GraphicsEnvironment.getLocalGraphicsEnvironment();
    GraphicsDevice gd = ge.getDefaultScreenDevice();
    return gd.getDefaultConfiguration();
         public static BufferedImage copyRescaled(BufferedImage tgt, BufferedImage src)
              Graphics2D g2 = tgt.createGraphics();
    int w=tgt.getWidth(), h=tgt.getHeight();
    hintForBestQuality(g2);
         g2.drawImage(src, 0, 0, w, h, null);
         g2.dispose();
    return tgt;
    public static Graphics2D hintForBestQuality(Graphics2D g2)
    g2.setRenderingHint(RenderingHints.KEY_INTERPOLATION,
              RenderingHints.VALUE_INTERPOLATION_BILINEAR);
    g2.setRenderingHint(RenderingHints.KEY_RENDERING,
              RenderingHints.VALUE_RENDER_QUALITY);
    return g2;
         public static BufferedImage rescale(BufferedImage src, int w, int h)
    int transparency = src.getColorModel().getTransparency();
    GraphicsConfiguration gc = getDefaultConfiguration();
    BufferedImage tgt = gc.createCompatibleImage(w, h, transparency);
    return copyRescaled(tgt, src);

    First, we need to be clear about what you're trying to do -- is it rescale an
    image or insure that the image is saved with a 8bit pixel depth? Or both? You are also
    using GraphicsConfiguration's createCompatibleImage, which is excellent if you are going
    to display the image immediately because it might be hardware accelerated
    or compatible with hardware format, but you mentioned mobile phone screens, so
    there is no advantage to using GraphicsConfiguration in that case, and if fact, it's
    probably changing your ColorModel when you're not looking.

  • How did they pull off this animated image on Facebook?

    Link here
    Can someone tell me how they pulled this off? Even in the newsfeed, we see the animation. This is a first for me in many years of using Facebook.
    It's not just renaming a .GIF to .JPG -- we've all tried that, it doesn't work.
    But this guy managed to pull it off somehow.

    Guess what?
    Same trick, different day, different way.

  • IMAQdx Grab changing my images from 16 bit to 8 bit?

    I have a labview application that I am trying to use with 16 bit images.  It is currently running and working with 8 bit images.  I though that if I changed the image type from 8 bit to 16 bit and changed the settings on my camera from 8 bit to 1 using MAX that the program would run the same but with 16 bit images instead.  However, even when I do this the camera only captures 8 bit images and then the application fails because of an incompatible image type error because all the settings are set to 16 bit images.  I set a few probes and realized that very early in my application all my images are 8 bit even when the camera is set to a 16 bit setting.  Also the resolution of my images is different than what the camera is set to.  I think that the culprit is IMAQdx Grab because I was reading in the help that if the image type does not match the video format of the camera then IMAQdx Grab changes the image type to a suitable format.  How can I make it so IMAQdx Grab wont change the image type?  I am fairly new with LabView so this might be something simple or not.  Thank you.

    Hi Optical Intern,
    It sound to me that you are having problems with getting the camera file to do what you want.  My guess is that you are not saving the attributes in Measurement and Automation (MAX) when you change them.  If you are saving them then I would try and set the attributes programmatically in your VI.  This should force it to what you want within the program.  Let me know how it goes.

  • I accidentally deleted all of the exceptions to the load images automatically list. What is the list of websites that are the exceptions and how do I get them all back onto the list at once?

    I accidentally removed all sites in the tools->options->content->load all images automatically.
    I need to know what the names of these sites are and how to get them all blocked again all at once.
    == This happened ==
    Just once or twice
    == when i accidentally removed all sites from the list

    There's no way to recover this list if you deleted the items, as it's not backed up.
    Why did you have the sites blocked in the first place? You can simply re-block the sites as you see the images in order to re-build your list.
