How did old Safari History Items I haven't visited in years appear recently?

I upgraded to Mountain Lion on Saturday October 13th. I then ran software updates, and got everything up to date. I was home alone, and the only thing I went to YouTube for was to get guidance for setting up Facebook and Twitter notifications. That's it. Today, using spotlight, some Safari History Items appeared for October 13th, 2012 for sites I haven't visited in years. However, none of them show up in my Safari Histroy. What gives?
Please help! I'm being accused of looking at inappropriate material when I didn't.
I'm at a loss to explain what really happened. Any concrete help will be greatly appreciated

Triple-click the line below to select it:
~/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari/History
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select Services ▹ Open from the contextual menu. Delete the contents of the folder that opens. Quit and relaunch Safari.

  • Looking up old safari history on iphone 4

I'm trying to look up my old safari history on my phone and can only see the last few days. How can I view older history?

As far as i know, you can't delete single items.

  • "Safari History Items" in Spotlight

"Safari History Items" show up in my Spotlight searches. This despite the fact that I have "Webpages" unchecked in Spotlight preferences. So, maybe Safari History Items and webpages are two different things? So what does "Webpages" refer to? Mac Help does not contain descriptions of what the categories in Preferences refer to. Also, if turning off Webpages in Spotlight prefs does not remove Safari History Items from Spotlight searches, what does? I like to turn off items in Spotlight that I can just as easily access from other programs, like mail messages in Mail, events in iCal, etc.

PITA isn't it! AFAIK, they're webhistory, but can't be deleted from a search. If you want to report this issue to Apple's engineering, send a bug report or an enhancement request via its Bug Reporter system. To do this, join the Mac Developer Program—it's free and available for all Mac users and gets you a look at some development software. Since you already have an Apple username/ID, use that. Once a member, go to Apple BugReporter and file your bug report or enhancement request. The nice thing with this procedure is that you get a response and a follow-up number; thus, starting a dialog with engineering.
Alternatively, you could delete the files in /Users/"username"/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari/History/ every so often and they won't show up.

The missing apps could have been done by setting the Restrictions that can hid those apps. If the backup was made with those retrictions set the the Restrictions are also restored.

You can check if you have a user.js file in the profile folder to initialize some prefs each time you start Firefox.
The user.js file is only present if you or other software has created it, so normally it wouldn't be there.<br />
You can check its content with a plain text editor if the file is there and you didn't create this file yourself.
The user.js file is read each time you start Firefox and initializes preferences to the value specified in this file, so preferences set via user.js can only be changed temporarily for the current session.

You can do a search for delta search pref on the <b>about:config</b> page and reset related user set (bold) prefs via the right-click context menu to the default value.

  • How to recover safari history that has been cleared

    I have a 2012 iMac running Mavericks OSX 10.9.4 4GB 1333 MHZ
I frequent a social network site that hosts photos, private mail conversations and blog discussions.
I use an app " safari cache explorer" that will very quickly look at the cache files from the browser history and give me the option to view the line items as plain text, web page, or image. The plain text view is not really that readable so I would like any suggestion on how to convert that part to something more useful. The items that can be viewed as web pages are perfect and appear exactly as the did when I was on that webpage.
Here is my problem. If the clear history function has been used in safari that explorer app has nothing to look at and sometimes I need to go back and find a preveiously viewed webpage. I am using time machine to backup to a Seagate backup plus drive and I have read at least several online discussions as well as everything on this community board on how to recover to recover to recover those files. There have been several  highly detailed explinations on how to accomplish this task but not one has worked.
Is it possible to retrive the history.plist, cache plist or whatever is needed to see those web pages from a week or two ago in a manner that they are usable?
If so what are the exact instructions on doing this task. A procedure that actually works would be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Safari/History.plist
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Quit the application if it's running. Enter Time Machine and restore the selected item from a snapshot that predates the unwanted changes. Relaunch the application and test.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Duplicate Safari History Items

    Hi,
When somebody visits a page in Safari today, does it delete any duplicate items from before? I.e. if I visited exactly the same page yesterday morning, would Safari still show the history item in yesterday's history, or will it no longer be there being as there is a fresher instance/visit?
    Thanks very much!

Thanks for the quick response. Just to clarify what I meant, here is why I am asking....
I have been having an issue with my daughter viewing a particular page in Facebook. I saw it in the history on Sunday, then I visited it on Monday. When I revisited the Sunday history, the entry was gone. Is that possible if the page was exactly the same?! I asked my daughter if she had deleted that line of history, but she assures me that she doesn't know how to delete individual lines of history.
Sorry, I know there is a whole separate issue here and people will no doubt have their 2 cents on parenting and trust, etc, but if my daughter knows how to delete part of the history I need to implement something else to prevent her from seeing content that I am not comfortable with.
    Thanks again.

  • Deleting Safari History Items with Restrictions Set

    Hi All,
My daughter's iPad mini has restrictions set to 'limit adult content'. One of the apparent benefits of this was the the 'Clear' button on Safari history and 'Private Browsing Mode' were disabled. I was then able to periodically audit the history to check nothing untoward. I could also temporarily remove restrictions to clear the history before re-enabling them.
However, I have just noticed that if you swipe left on an item in history, you are given the option to delete - without removing Restrictions first.
Is this expected behaviour or has a particular update caused this? Is there a setting to prevent history deletion?
    Many Thanks,

You can clear just history on iOS 8, but there's no analogous easy way to do it in Yosemite.
For Yosemite, to clear history manually, you must:
Go to Safari's History -> Show History
Click in the History window and Select All (Command-A or Edit -> Select All)
    Press "Delete"
Note that due to cacheing and the fact that History may now be synced across devices via iCloud, you may need to repeat steps 2 and 3 multiple times before you delete all History items.
For iOS 8, display History, tap "Clear" and choose the option you prefer.

  • How to recover safari history from time machine?

    Hi guys,
I need your help ... I use time machine for the backup and I cancelled the history of Safari few days ago and now I need to recover it.
Where and how can I find it among the time machine files?
I have already read some suggestions in the web that told me to find it in the user/Library/Safari/History but I can't find any Safary folder in my Library :-(
    Many thanks in advance

Triple-click the text on the line below to the clipboard, then copy it to the Clipboard (command-C):
    ~/Library/Safari/History.plist
Quit Safari. Disable Safari synchronization in iCloud, if applicable.
    Select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the Finder menu bar. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
A folder window should open with a file named "History.plist" selected. Restore the file from a backup that predates the unwanted changes. If you disabled sync, re-enable it and test.

  • Is there a way to get all of my old safari history back?

I have a iPod touch 4g and I have recently restored iPod touch and it deleted all of my safari history that had some important things on it . So I am wondering if there is a way to get the history back.

I sounds like you restored the iPod to factory defaults/new iPod.  In iTunes on yur computer go to iTunes Preferences. click on he Ddvices tab.  If the date of the backup file indicate that it it has the history you can restore from that backup.

  • How did a Yahoo! item suddenly appear in my menu bar, and how can I get rid of it?

I connected to the internet as usual to find that the menu item Yahoo! appears as described above.
As I has lost all my previous tabs (from doing some offline housekeeping), I had to manually establish access to my favoutire tabs.
When tryign to establish contact with Gmail, Yahoo kept intercepting my requests and presenting me with a doce 404.
Even when I tried other sites, the same problem occurred.
I eventually managed to overcome this issue, but I am still concerned that Yahoo! appears to be taking over as my search engine.
Any help would be most appreciated.

    HI there
Thank you for trying to help me. You're going to think I'm really thick, but I can't seem to do a screen shot.
I pressed the command and the 3 button, plus what I believe is the shift key, Hat is the one on the left hand side, with an arrow on it, which you use for a capital letter yeah?
    But nothing happens.
Also I can't see what you are reffering to when you say click onto the camera icon? I can't see any such icon.
    Sorry to be so useless.
I have just noticed that it is obviously connected with the sound. It has a row of boxes undeneath the logo, and as you increase the volume, the boxes fill up from left to right, and the logo flutters at the same time.
have alogitec amplifier and speaker system connected to it, and have just noticed that the sun logo looks very similar to the Logitec symble/Logo.
Is that of any help please?

  • Opening safari history gives prompt that says I am opening an application.

I think this happened after 10.5.2. When I do a search in spotlight, I get a bunch of safari history items (which I wish I could turn off). If I click on one of them, I get a warning telling me that I am about to open an application. I never got this before the 10.5.2 update.
    Anybody else notice this?
    Mark

I turned off webpages in the preferences and I still get safari history and bookmarks in the results. And I did a quick check were I searched for the same item with the preference turned on and then off and I got the exact amount of results. I don't think that preference is working or, I don't understand it.
Those files that say they are apps are located in Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari/History.
I'm tempted to trash the spotlight preference file and see if this fixes it...

  • Web history item is a downloaded application?

I used Spotlight to search for an item. Selecting the spotlighted item produced this warning:
'"feed/%2F%2Fwww.macnn.com%2Fmacnn.rss.webhistory" is an application which was downloaded from the internet. Are you sure you want to open it?
Safari.app downloaded this file yesterday at 6:58 PM.
    Cancel Open'
Now, I checked the file info; the file I attempted to open is not an application. Further, attempting to open every Safari history item provokes this warning.
It seems strange to me that a Safari history item might provoke such a warning. Does anyone have a clue what's happening here?

Why we get the warning for those items is a mystery to me too. I also get them, and have been mystified as to why such a thing would be considered "an application downloaded from the Internet" when it doesn't strike ME as being an application, although clearly it did come from the Internet. The warnings in general are a result of a security update and AFAIK there is no way to turn them off or edit what items are on the list of things worthy of a warning.

  • Safari History Prefs....help

so, without thought or reason, i downloaded/installed safari enhancer. well, i didn't like it, so i chucked it. but, now the length of time that safari will maintain it's history is short and annoying. how can i restore this? anyone?
    thanks.

    Hello,
Open Terminal (Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities) and type in one of the following:
    defaults write com.apple.Safari WebKitHistoryItemLimit 9999
    defaults write com.apple.Safari WebKitHistoryAgeInDaysLimit 365
The first command's number can be changed to how many number of history items you want in the history.
The second command's number tells you how many days of history to keep. Obviously, you need only enter one command.
    Hope this helps,
