How disable startup sound mountain lion?

How do I disable startup sound OSX 10.8.2?

no problem:
before going deep, some points here:
I own about 13 Apple Devices since almost 7 years and my country is the first where Apple has the most OS market share:
http://royal.pingdom.com/2011/03/16/the-10-most-mac-friendly-countries-on-the-pl anet/
Also, I have about 50 "close" friends that have Mac OS products (imacs, MacBook, Air...)
I never, ever had a recovery problems in 7 years and that's why I buy Apple products.I never, ever heard a friend, in my country or in another that was stuck because of the start sound. (i already have had a friend that have to replace it, but starting sound was not necessary on this case). Here 4 situations with a MacBook Air:
You try to start the Mac, nothing happen, even if the sound would work. In this case, battery was completly down. So you plug it, wait 3 mn and start it. What would be the use of the sound here? Should they not "spare" some battery just to make the sound work? No I do not think so.
You try to start the Mac, you disabled the sound and nothing happen. You bring it to Apple and they discover that your screen is dead. What would be the use of the sound here?

You try to start the Mac, you disabled the sound and nothing happen. You bring it to Apple and they discover that you could repaired the problem if the starting sound could be heared. But you just putted on mute before the last shutdown. (so why not make the sound work, even though you putted on mute on this case?)
Seeing your "level" and points, I am pretty sure you will come with many counter arguments and I do not really care about them frankly.
My point is, after 7 years using Apple products, I am more than happy to have them and I will continue to buy them because they are so amazing, it never appear to me that I need this starting sound that causes me more trouble when i start it and my wife or kids are sleeping not too far, trying everytime to put me far away and try to hide the Air under pillows when I start it.
Frankly, if that's going to happen to me in the next 7 years, I would be more than happy to go to my Apple store and bring them back to their specialists and hear I was a bad boy, i should not have disabled the sound. I will not care 1 second trying to fix it myself if I do not see how to fix it. And I will return home, with new Apple products I would have buyed in the meantime.
My turn to ask you a question, if your car tomorrow does not start (you do not hear the starting sound ;-)), are you going to try to remove the motor and see if perhaps you can do something yourself?
If you are a mecanics, maybe, if no, I doubt.
If there so many threads about this and some software build around this, it means there is something about it.
I guess you are going to defend your point telling other things...
If that happen to me, I am sure Apple guys will fix it. That's my ultimate solution. Period.

How does one silence mountain lion startup sound?

After asking this question many times and always getting the ususal fixes (that don't work in Mountain Lion) Psst, Startninja, turn down the sound when you shut down, yada yada yada. And the "why don't you just put it to sleep" comments :/  duh..  Sometime we want to shut it down!! Even Apple support has no idea how to do it. Here's is the fix and it is so simple it hurts.
Controlling the volume of the startup chime is easy to set in the System Preferences Sound panel, but you need to make two different settings if you have external speakers connected to your Mac. There is no need to use scripts or any other coding to make this adjustment.
There are both internal and external speaker output settings in the sound preference pane. In order to adjust (or turn off) the volume of your Mac's internal speakers, nothing must be plugged into the headphone jack. Keep in mind that this setting completely controls the volume of your internal Mac speakers, so if you mute the sound, and have no external speakers, you will get no sound at all from your Mac.
To adjust the volume on your Mac's internal speakers:
Unplug speakers or headphones from the headphone jack.
Go to System Prefs > Sound, then click on the Output tab.
You will then see Internal Speakers (Type built-in) highlighted in the window.
Adjust the output volume (which also controls the chime volume) in the slider at the bottom of the window. Remember if you mute it there will be no internal speaker sound.
To set the volume for your external speakers:
Plug in speakers or headphones to the headphone jack.
Go to System Prefs > Sound >, then click on the Output tab.
You will then see Headphones (Type built-in) highlighted in the window.
Adjust the output volume (which controls the chime volume in the external speakers) with the slider at the bottom of the window. Remember if you mute it there will be no external speaker sound.

  • How do you erase mountain lion to install snow leopard?

Hi, My mother now has a new to her late 09 mini that originally shipped with snow leopard. When she bought it it came with mountain lion preinstalled from a private seller. We were thinking that to be on the safe side that it might be better to erase and install what's on it just to be sure it is secure. I tried to erase and install snow leopard from a disk but it says that the installer is not compatible with this version of osx(mountain lion). Question: How do I erase mountain lion and install snow leopard?
I've read here that there is possibly a built in recovery disk that I can use to erase and reinstall mountain lion. Q: Is there a built in recovery disk available in my situation? and if so should I use it or be even safer by installing snow leopard instead?
    Thank you,

I think I found the answer (from sl install disk use disk utility to erase then install sl). Thanks for looking.

I do not have a high speed internet connection. How can I get Mountain Lion on a disk for install on my 24" Imac?

As long as you use your Apple ID to purchase it, I don't see why they wouldn't let you download the installer on one of their Macs and put it on a pocket drive.
Or, a friend with a high speed connection?
I agree with you about the delivery method, just trying to help you get what you want.

  • How do I redownload mountain lion for a clean install on the same machine without purchasing again?

I purchased mountain lion and upgraded my OS.  The system seems to still be having some issues and I'd like to do a clean install with the new OS.  How do I redownload mountain lion so that I can make a bootable disk and do my clean install?

You should be able to just go to the App Store and select Download again. If that doesn't work, try holding down the option key while selecting "Buy".
    Good luck,

  • Hi, I have a late 2008 iMac with a new hard drive. How do I install Mountain Lion from my bootable USB flash drive.

How do I install Mountain Lion to a new hard drive without having the recovery partition on it.
I have the USB flash drive with software on it but when I switch my Mac on all I have is a white screen & a flashing question mark.
    ATB,
    Steve.

Did you use LionDiskMaker or DiskMaker X?
Boot the machine with the option key down until you see your bootable USB stick.  Select the latter, and reboot.
When the installer boots up, you will first need to choose Utilities and Disk Utility. Select the target HD device name and then the partition tab. Select 1 partition, name it Macintosh HD. Format is Mac OS Extended, and option is GUID. Apply. Exit Disk Utility and return to the installer, which will now show your newly partitioned HD as available for install.
When OS X is installed and all updates applied, press shift+command+U and run disk utility again. Verify/repair permissions and verify the boot disk.

  • How do i intall mountain lion on a new hard drive

    How do i do it?
I bought a new 13" MBP a few weeks back and have now got my SSD. I realise that Apple no longer give out OS install discs and i don't have mountain lion purchased on my app store as it came with my laptop. So how do i install mountain lion on my new hard drive without having to buy mountain lion.

Option 1  - Newer Mac's like your come with internet recovery. Which means if your drive fails or is corrupted or in your case your install a brand new drive, internet recovery will let you reinstall the OS you are eligible for. So replace your drive and boot your system with cmd + R keys pressed down for 15 secs or so and your machine hooked to the internet. This will install ML from apple in your case.
Option 2 - Clone or backup (your entire system using time machine) your hard drive to a external USB disk. Replace your drive and then restore the new drive from the clone or backup.

  • How do I install Mountain Lion on a thumb drive?

How do I install Mountain Lion on a thumb drive when my computer is running Mavericks? I downloaded the Mountain Lion installer, but when I attempt to run it I get a message that says "You cannot install OS X 10.8 on this computer." I don't want to install it on the computer, I want to install it on the thumb drive—but it won't give me a choice of drives.
The reason I want to do this is I want to be able to boot my iMac into Mountain Lion in order to test a hardware/software combination I suspect might be incompatible with Mavericks.
(Note: there are plenty of instructions online for how to create a bootable thumb drive with the Mountain Lion installer, but that's not what I want. I want to install ML on the thumb drive itself.)

Sure you have a proper installer application. When I start it I get:
Clicking on Continue, then accepting the licensing stuff, gets me to:
If you click on Show All Disks, then all mounted disks will be presented including your flash drive.
Now the above is a Mavericks installer, but it's the same for Mountain Lion.

  • How do I download mountain lion onto new hard drive

My IMac 2.4  mid 2007 was starting to get very slow in opening applications. I rebooted the machine, it displayed the apple and then a circle with a line through it and would go no further. I have put it down to the hard drive, and have purchased a new one. My question is, how do I install mountain lion that I have already purchased to the new hard drive. I would appreciate any help on the matter

You need to get your computer up to at least 10.6, using the original installer for your Mac, or a retail copy of 10.6.3. Then update to 10.6.8, and using the App Store, sign in with your AppleID, go to Purchases, and re-download and install 10.8.

How do i reinstall mountain Lion after installing maverick. Maverick  is not compatible with FileMaker 13 server. Maverick is now objecting to reinstalling Mountain Lion. Where do I go from here? Help?

If you can download the ML installer you can make a bootable install media by using:
    http://liondiskmaker.com/
If your Mini came with ML you can also boot to Internet Recovery
OS X: About OS X Recovery
and it will install ML. Make sure you boot to Internet Recovery and not the Recovery Partition. If to the partition you will only get Mavericks.

How do I erase mountain lion developer preview and go back to Lion 10.7? I do not have lion or data backed up on my Air
I need a step by step instructions since I have never done this before, willing to set up partition if needed.

If you installed Lion from the Mac App Store or got it with the computer, restart with the Option key held down and see if its recovery partition still exists; if it does, tab to it, use the Disk Utility on it to erase the Mountain Lion partition or repartition the drive, and install Lion onto the blank partition. If you installed Lion from the USB thumb drive, use that.
