How do booth my computer from my backup disk?

I am using Silverkeeper on a LaCie firewire external drive, and have backed up regularly every week for the past few years. As I am getting ready to install Leopard I would like to find out how to use my backup to restart my computer in case the installation has problems. Specifically, what key do I use to start from the external drive? As an example, to start from the installation disk I press the C key.
Thanks!
Ruth

First, you need to get a program that will make bootable backups, such as SuperDuper! or CarbonCopyCloner, then use them to back up.
To boot from an external disk, hold 'option' during boot. All boot volumes will be listed.
One note: before upgrading to leopard, unplug EVERYTHING from your computer except for keyboard, mouse, and the power cord. That will help avoid problems during installation.
Good luck!

  • Can't load my PS to a new computer from my backup disk.....?

My MacBook died. I had the entire adobe suite on it. I have it backed up tho on an external drive. I am trying to put it on the used Macbook I purchased but it won't load from the external drive to the used Macbook I purchased. Is there a file or files on the old puter, that won't start, that I need to load to the 'new' Macbook as well as the files on the external drive? Thanks for you answers guys!

You can redownload it from there. There are VERY SPECIFIC instructions to get the download to work, and then you'll need your original product key to reinstall.

  • I am changing to a larger hard drive on my Mac. Can I copy the Aperture library from my backup disk running Time Machine without loosing anything?

I am installing a larger harddrive on my Mac. Can I copy the Aperture library from my backup disk running Time Machine without loosing anything? I am getting help migrating everything else on to the new harddrive, but since copying the 350Gb Aperture library takes a lot of time, I am planning to do that part myself.

I found the following information on Time Machine help about restoring Aperture library from TM
    Restoring Your Aperture System
If you buy a new computer or use another system at a different location and want access to the Aperture library, you can install Aperture and then transfer the library from your vault (on your backup disk) to the other computer. If you experience equipment failure or other unexpected events, such as fire or weather-related damage to your equipment, you can easily restore the entire library to your new computer from a backup disk.

Connect the hard disk drive that contains the most up-to-date vault to your computer and open Aperture.
Choose File > Vault > Restore Library. The Restore Library dialog appears.
Choose the vault you want to use to restore your library from the Source Vault pop-up menu.If the vault doesn’t appear in the Source Vault pop-up menu, choose Select Source Vault from the Source Vault pop-up menu, navigate to the vaults location in the Select Source Vault dialog, then click Select.
Click Restore, then click Restore again.

  • How do I transfer contacts from a backup to iPhone?

I just restored my iPhone as a new phone. I have a backup saved in my computer, not in iCloud. So my question is: how do I transfer contacts from that backup to my newly restored phone, and ONLY the contacts, nothing more (that's the whole point of my restoring my phone as a new phone).
I don't know if all of that makes sense, but if someone knows how to do that, please help me, I can't afford to lose those hundreds of contacts.

    You cannot.
Why are you opposed to paying for some software to help do what you want?
You can restore the backup to your iPhone then sync the photos to your computer.

  • How do I restore files from TM backups with broken links?

I have Time Machine backups with broken links all over the more recent backups.
I get the message "The alias “xxx” can’t be opened because the original item can’t be found." whenever I click on one of the links.
I have made the backups on my external usb backup drive before before upgrading my internal disk to a larger one.
Two questions: 1) How can I recover the files?  2) What happened, how can I repair the backup if possible?
The sequence of events was: Made the latest backup.  Apple ran extended diagnostics overnight at the store and did a reinstall of the OS (10.8.2).  I passed on restoring the backup and went to an authorized service center and had them put in a new tera-byte drive.  I deleted (in the star-wars display) the oldest two and a middle backup leaving the Aug, Oct, and latest Nov. backups.
Now I see 100's 1000's of bad links.  If I look at the backup (just look) with finder I can see directories for July and Sept in addition to the ones I didn't delete.
It appears that the files are probably all there and I could recover them a few at a time if I poke around.
I am tempted to do this before trying to repair the disk.  Yes, it will take me ages; but I would rather take the time than a chance at doing -Anything- that could even possibly make things worst.  I can see 3 senarios and wonder if anyone can say what would be best. And by best I mean **Safest**.
    1) Go in TM to the Aug backup that seems to have no (or maybe only a few) broken links and restore that; then move in TM to newer backups and restore one folder or file at a time on top of it.
    2) Do the same thing with a restore of Aug but then use the finder to copy newer files from the backup disk to the new disk.
    3) Do essentially the same thing; but do it all in finder.
Of course that still begs the question of what happened and if the backup can be repaired; but to me, that is secondary to getting the data back.
fyi- I have looked at the TM hints and debug-repair file.  I realize I can try a repair disk but I am tempted to try to get the data 1st unless someone is Sure a repair won't mung the data more.
    Thanks

  • How to estimate recovery time from rman backup

how to estimate recovery time from rman backup?
The database is of size 800GB.
the approximate time to backup is 8- 10 hours.

"Recovery time" is : RESTORE DATABASE time + RECOVER DATABASE time.
    RESTORE can be done
    a. in parallel with multiple channels if your backup was created as multiple backupsets
    b. using incremental backups
    c. whether the backups are on
    i. disk
    ii. tape
Alternatively, if you have a Recovery Area with an Incrementally Update backup of the database, you can SWITCH DATABASE almost immediately
    RECOVER depends on
    a. how many archivelogs (in terms of size, not necessarily number) need to be applied
    -- this depends on
    i. transaction volume
ii. the "freshness" of the backups (how recent the backups are)
    b. whether required archivelogs are available on disk (which can be the case if the database backup itself is a very recent backup and archivelogs since then haven't been deleted {whether they have been backed up or not}) OR whether they need to be restored from
    i. disk backup
    ii. tape backup

Don't buy CleanMyMac or any other dreck that offers to "clean" your Mac for you. Worst software ever.
If there are apps in your Applications folder you don't need any more, drag them to the trash and empty the trash.
In general, it is media files, like music, photos, and especially video that is taking up a lot of space. You can move your iTunes library, iPhoto Library, and iMovie video to an external drive.

  • Retrieving certain files from previous backup disks

My computer crashed and I ran the Recovery Disks that I created when I first bought it.  This reinstalled Windows 7 to it's factory settings.  I like what I have now but I would like to recover my documents, photos and music from my backup.
I have over 90 disks of backup and the first few seem to have the same files on them.
How do I find my documents, photos and music from the backup disks?  How do I install only those files from the backup?  I don't want the whole backup because I don't want all the stuff that was on the computer before.
    Thank you!

    Hi christmaslyric,
How do you create the backup disks?
Do you select the option Let Windows Choose or Let me choose?
I have tested in my environment, and I can restore the specific folder like document and music from the backup in my computer.
Due to the lack of the environment like yours, I suggest you to try to restore these folder from the backup disk and let us know the result.

    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
This is generally a Lion error.. and you will need 5.6 utility to get access to the disk area.
So download the real utility. Run it instead of v6 toy version.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Go to the manual setup, disk page and click on disconnect all users.. that will unmount all users connected to the disk and allow it to start working. But there are a number of other issues that are possible cause. Pondini lists some of them.

  • Migration Assistant from a backup disk...

Is it possible upon first booting (or subsequently) to import the user account from a FireWire disk? I mean, it is so easy to import from another Mac with Migration Assistant but is there no similar way to import from a backup disk?
I'v done it the hard way by dragging and dropping the files but it seems like the permissions are always messed up and need time-consuming repair. It is also very difficult getting the preferences to be accepted while the application is already running.
Hoping there is an easy way, because I prefer to wipe the hard disk and install freshly.

no, MA will not understand that. then you'll have to migrate things by hand. check out this [link|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6185507] for a list of things to move.

You will need a Backup Extractor program; there are many available. I use iScavenge for Mac, but there are many more. https://duckduckgo.com/?q=iphone+backup+extractor The one at the top of the search claims to be free, but it is not. Don't be fooled. I can't recommend for or against any of them, except iScavenge, which is OK.
If you are technically inclined the backup is a SQLite database, so a SQLite browser can also open the backup.
