How do connect to wifi so I can use my MacBook Pro out of office

How do I connect to wifi so to use my MacBook Pro out of the office

Depends on the WiFi source.   Download Firefox from http://www.mozilla.com as some WiFi routers only let you login via Firefox.
Have an cat-5 or cat-6 ethernet cable handy, as some hotels provide WiFi between rooms in a hotel, but do not broadcast on a frequency that you can pickup
with your Mac, but rather give you a direct connection to their router in the room.
Some places require you download Boingo and subscribe to Boingo to get on their service.
For the rest, you should be able to get the protocol, network name, username, and password for connecting your Mac from the provider.  Ones with no password will automatically appear in the Airport menu which looks like *.  The ones with a password may show up there, or only work if you Connect to Other... from that menu.   That menu may be gray or it may be black.  If there is a lock next to the network name, you'll need a password and protocol to connect.
Macs support WPA2, WEP, TKIP connections via WiFi.
WEP aren't very secure.  WPA2 are much more secure.

Glad you found the answer.  But something seems wrong.  FCP should be able to assign the scratch disk to your startup drive.  It's not advisable, but it should be possible.  You might want to try and figure out what's going on before what ever's going on cause other problems.

If your USB port is working now, you didn't damage it and have nothing to worry about.
The behavior you saw in your bus-powered Fujitsu drive is normal for a drive that needs more power than the USB port can provide.
If your USB ports ever do shut down, resetting the SMC may bring them back online again quickly and easily.

  • Can using a Macbook Pro Drive in a Mac Pro cause kernel panic?

Is there any inherent problem/conflict with running a Mac Pro off an OSX drive that was used, for a Macbook Pro? Is there MP firmware installed that is incompatible with a MBP drive?
The drive is a 2.5" duplicate of my MBP that was created not by installation, but by clone, (SuperDuper), that I have booted from, and used before, as a backup for my MBP.
    In as brief as possible...
On Nov. 1, my MBP's fans started making horrible noises. I made a genius appt for the afternoon, and I backed up my MBP external clone and brought the Macbook Pro in to Apple. They kept if for repair, (3-5 days.)
I also have a Mac Pro, which is exclusively a workstation machine. I do not use it for personal purposes. That's what the MBP is for. But meanwhile I have personal purposes to attend to, so I was planning to use the MBP clone as a startup disk on the MP.
Rather than use the MBP clone as a startup disk through fw800, I had the bright idea of plugging the clone into the MP drive bay directly.
The first time I booted, I was not connected to the internet, (both MP and MBP use the same Airport Extreme.) My network, nor any other, were visible in the airport menu (bar), and from that pulldown I tried to toggle airport off, and it was unresponsive. I went into Sys Pref Network, and instantly a pop up announced a new network interface was detected, (called Airport 2), and when I hit apply suddenly I was connected again to the network and the internet.
I was downloading some large files overnight, went tot sleep late, and all was good. That was until morning, when I discovered the kernel panic screen. I rebooted in single user, ran fsck twice, (first time the sys was modified), rebooted and was back up again.
All was good until tonight, when downloading again, I had another kernel panic, second in 14 hours.
I restarted again in Single User, ran fsck twice, same as before, and am back up and running again.
I would have called Apple support, but they were already closed. I will call them in the morning.
Is there any long term damage to my machine that can be cause by these kernel panics?
I have had kernel panics before, but not in the last three years.
Thanks in advance. I appreciate the help. This problem may be above most of our "pay grades," so I will understand if there are no responses at all. ( I usually have problems that get no responses, because I know how to fix all the little stuff!)
Also, if you need me to post logs from Console, let me know.
    Best,
    Richard

It comes down to two issues:
    1) whether the image on that disk was created from a set of MacBook-specific DVDs, such as the ones that shipped with with the MacBook when new. If so, it does not have the required Drivers for certain Mac Pro Hardware.
    2) whether your Mac Pro was shipped with a System later than the one for the MacBook Pro. If so, it does not have some of the Updates for Mac Pro Hardware.
No one has the patience to debug such an Installation unless and until you can demonstrate that the System you are running is the correct one for the Mac Pro you are running it on.

  • Can I decide which graphics chip I can use in MacBook Pro with Retina?

I have a MacBook Pro with Retina display. I have the 15inch model so I have the Intel HD 4000 as well as the NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M. My computers automatically decides which graphics chip to use which I now I normal BUT I was wondering how and if I would be able to choose which graphics chip I would like to use.

Most of the time, your computer will switch between graphic chips automatically - so you're right, you don't have to choose. However, in certain situations, your machine will get too hot or you'll get too much drain on your battery. In that case, you may have to choose the chip: in that case, gfxCardStatus http://gfx.io is a good application to download. It's free.

I Need help getting my wifi to work

I have seen numerous discussions of this on various forums with various brands of phones and various cellular providers. A common opinion is that some types of data usage are summarized and billed during the night -- i.e., the billing time does not reflect the actual time when the data is used. Following is one discussion on the AT&T forum that mentions the issue on a Windows phone and a Samsung Note 3: https://forums.att.com/t5/Windows-Phone/Data-usage-at-night/td-p/3765845

Contact the carrier to make sure you imputed all their information correctly.
Read your routers user manual, call their customer support department or visit their website for further support.
Other things to try - Change your router channel.  Sometimes this is all you will have to do.
Power cycling the router.  Read the router's user manual or contact their tech support for instructions.
    System Preferences/Internet & Network/Network
    Unlock the padlock
    Locations:  Automatic
    Highlight Airport
    Click the Assist Me button
In the popup window click the Diagnostic button.
System Preferences/Network- Unlock padlock.  Highlight Airport.  Network Name-select your name.  Click on the Advanced button.  Airport/Preferred Networks-delete all that is not your network.
Place a check mark next to "Remember networks this computer has joined."  Click the OK button and lock the padlock.  Restart your computer.

  • Is there any way I can use my macbook pro as a second monitor?

I want to connect it to my Mac Pro, I have two video cards and was hoping I could just run a VGA cable between the two.
    Thanks,
    Chad....

With Mac OS X v10.5 and later, you can connect to another computer on your network and display that computer’s screen on your computer. While you share the computer’s screen, you can control what happens on that computer, such as opening documents or applications, opening, moving, or closing windows, and even shutting down the computer.
You can also share your computer’s screen with another computer on your network.
    Mac OS X: Screen Sharing
If you can connect each computer to the Internet without changing cables, you already have the infrastructure needed for Screen Sharing. (File Sharing as well it turns out.)
All you need to do is use System Preferences to allow it, and specify who can connect and how much control they get.
OS X: Share the screen of another computer
Whether a WiFi connection, especially using an older 2.4GHz-only Router can give you good results is a separable issue. Using the mouse when there is a lot of lag is truly vexing.

  • Can I use my MacBook Pro in Italy?

I am traveling to Rome, Italy and am wondering if I can use my MacBook Pro?  Do I need to purchase a converter?  Thanks!

Yes, you just need to switch the "duckhead" plug on your power adapter.  Apple sells the whole kit here.

  • Can I use my Macbook pro in Africa with just a adapter?

I am travelling to Africa and was wondering if I can use my macbook pro with just the adapter for 240 or do I also need the converter.

On any of your electronic equipment, look at the power adapter. For example, the adapter with my MacBook Pro says "Input: 100-240V" therefore it will work at 240 volts with only an adapter, no transformer needed.

  • I am getting a msg that pllocked and connected to wifi. I can not hit the ok button and my apps are visible. Not able to use at all.

I am getting a msg that my ipad hasnt been backed up in 2 wks. I have plugged in (at 100%) and locked and connected to wifi. I can not hit the ok button and my apps are showing in the back ground. Not able to use at all. How can I get my ipad working again.
    thanks,

Even though the iPod shows as been connected, it might not have actually received a valid IP address via DHCP from your Wi-Fi access point or router.  Head to Settings -> Wi-Fi and tap the > next to the network you are connected. If 169.xxx.xxx.xxx is listed for an IP Address, then your iPod did not receive a valid IP address.  To correct this you can reboot your router by unplugging it from power for about 30 seconds.
It wouldn't hurt to also reset your iPod.  To do this, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.

My wife and I both have the iphone and we use my macbook pro with iTunes to sync our ipods. When I do something on my iPhone it shows on hers. How do I set up her a seperate iTunes acct on my mac so she can operate independent of me?

There's info here on setting up separate libraries and user accounts. You won't have to reload (or re-import) all the music, just copy it.
The reason I suggest separate accounts on the Mac is because if you have the two libraries under the same user account, iTunes will also open the last library that was open in that account, and you'll always have to be mindful of which library that is. If you open iTunes and find it's not your library, you'll have quit, relaunch holding the option key and select the other library.
No, you won't have to log in and out of the Mac. (If I'm understanding your question here.) Multiple accounts can be logged in at the same time. And with fast user switching, you can toggle between user accounts.
I'll admit that maintaining the two libraries gets a little tricky, because if you share all the same music, you'll have to add it to one and update the other. (That won't happen automatically.) But I think Home Sharing makes this much easier to do.
    Hope that helps!

Get an HDMI switcher. Plug in the ATV directly to the TV and then use the switcher on the other input.

You need to go to the App stores and find compatible apps. iOS device do not natively have to ability to transfer info to a computer via BT to a computer.
With iOS 8 you can use AirDrop
