How do create I dual-boot Mac?

I have recently installed Lion OS but have found that some Power Pc programmes don't work with Lion. I still want to use these applications. Is it possible to set up a dual-boot mac keeping Lion but also having Snow Leopard as well so I can use these apps, and how is this done?
Any help welcome
thanks

I have done the same thing as you are talking about without problems.
Have a look here for instructions on how to do it (btw, it assumes you have the white SL install disk).

  • How to create a dual boot on OSX Mavericks?

I've Mavericks and I want to install two more OS X (10.7 and 10.8) on the same machine. Is there any way to install earlier OS X along with the latest OSX ?
I've created partitions and tried to install there but a message says something like this "This OS X could not be installed on this MAC". Then I tried to create a bootable usb drive by "DiskMaker X" but that was also failed.
        Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi!
Create a new partition for Windows XP and install it. This is no problem.
After this you must restore the Windows Vista boot loader. You can do this with EasyBCD. Install it and start the program.
Go to the "Add/Remove Entries" tab. You'll see that there's only one option available in the Vista bootloader at the moment. In the "Add an Entry" section, change the Drive in the dropdown menu from C:\ to E:\. Change Type to "Windows NT/2k/XP/2k3", and the Name to "Microsoft Windows XP". Then click "Add Entry" and "Save".
Then go to the "Manage Bootloader" tab. Make sure that "Reinstall the Vista Bootloader" is selected and then click "Write MBR".
Now you can restart the notebook and you should have a full working dual boot system.

  • I need to know how to create a dual boot so that I can have Windows 7 and the Mac OS

I need this so that I can have Microsoft Access, because it's not available for Mac..
And, I have so many computer games that I have for Windows that I want to play on my Mac.
    Help please!

You do not open it yet.
First you need to read this: http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/Boot_Camp_Install-Setup_Late2010.pdf
This will tell you when the Windows image is required.
Prepare for this on all fronts first ... backup/clone, and read the ENTIRE document.
Then ask about what to do with the Windows ISO.
At least in my humble opinion.  This can go badly quickly if you miss a step.

  • How can I dual-boot Mac OSX and Linux Mint?

Hey guys, I was wondering if it is possible to dual-boot both OS's similar to OS X and Windows 7/8...but first I'm wondering if it will void my MacBook Air Warranty (w/ AppleCare) as ultimately it wouldn't be worth it then!
    Thanks!

Which CD are you trying to use?
Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) originally came on DVD.
A media exchange program initially was available:
    http://images.apple.com/macosx/pdf/TigerMediaExchangeFormv5.pdf
So maybe you did an exchange for CDs?

  • Creating a dual boot HD Windows 7 32 and Windows 7 64 bit OS

I have a 750 GB HD with one bootable partition of Windows 7 32 bit OS using 320 GB space. Was cloned from a HD that was physically 320 GB. Still have 400 GB unallocated space on the HD. HD is currently in a ultrabay and I can boot from either the internal 320 GB HD or the 320 GB partition on the 750 GB HD. Can put the Ultrabay in either a T61 or T61P laptop. Have the 64 bit install DVD for Windows 7 and would like to install it on the unpartitioned space on my 750 GB HD using some or all of the 400 GB unpartitioned space. How do I create the dual boot system on the Ultrabay 750 GB harddrive?

All you have to do is install the windows, it will install a boot manager so you can select among the operating systems.
Also understand that the drive installed in your ultrabay will run slower, so you're best to use the boot drives as your primary drive and use an ultrabay drive only for storage.

  • Dual boot Mac OS X and Arch: Arch installer cannot find CD drive?

Hi, everyone!  A friend convinced me to install Arch about a month ago on my desktop and I've loved it so much that I want to dual boot Mac OS X and Arch on my Macbook Pro 7.1.
So I have a Macbook Pro 7.1.  I have partitioned the drive in Mac OS X and installed rEFIt.  I have the Arch x86_64 disk which I know works because I installed Arch on another computer.
When I boot from CD I get the familiar Arch screen with options "Boot Arch Linux, existing OS... etc."  I click boot Arch, and it starts to load.  However, it says "Waiting 30 seconds for device /dev/disk/by-label/ARCH_201005 ... ERROR: boot device didn't show up after 30 seconds... Falling back to interactive prompt.  /bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off."
After searching around the forums, some people said they had similar problems attempting to install via USB.  I used "cat /proc/scsi/scsi" and my CD drive does not show up in ramfs.. What can I do to install this amazing OS on my MB Pro 7.1?
    Thank you for your time!

Solved!  sledgehammer and MrE (sorry, I can't spell it) in IRC helped me out.  I had to download a newer iso that offers better Mac hardware support.  2010-12 iso

how to create shared folder between mac and windows

Us ean external drive formatted FAT32 or ExFat. Both OSx and Windows can read/write to the drive and both can use the same data files as long as you have a program that can open and save these files. For example, Word running both on OSx and on Windows will be able to work with the same document on the external drive.

  • Dual boot mac mac

i want to dual boot leopard and snow leopard... or just snow leopard and snow leopard.. can this be done? how?
i currently have snow leopard dual boot with windows 7, but for testing purposes i want o install two mac os, if possible two snow leopard.. can this be done? can someone tell me how?

Use the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to create a blank partition of the desired size, and install the OS onto it normally. Your computer needs to be able to boot to that OS.

  • Mac and Linux dual boot mac G4

Ok I now have a linux os that works on my power mac G4 but now I would like to dual boot it.
Anyone know how to do that?
P.S. I'm doing research on the subject myself and If I find a solution before anyone on here can answer this I will post it.
    (Hopefully)

Depends on which Linux distro you're using. The general outline is:
    1. Using the OS X installer, partition the disk in two partitions, one for OS X and one for Linux. At this point the Linux partition can be the OS X Disk util's default HFS+; it's only created as a placeholder.
    2. Install OS X to the partition dedicated to it.
    3. Using the Linux installer, remove the partition previously created for Linux and create at least three partitions for Linux in the freed space: one for bootloader, one for the Linux OS and one for swap
    4. Install linux to the partition given to it.
    5. If not handled by the installer, install and configure the bootloader
    6. Point Open Firmware to boot from the bootloader partition.
The bootloader partition contains the machinery for multibooting. It's usually under one megabyte, but I'd advice 16MB to better accommodate a better bootloader. Yaboot is still usually the default, but grub2, which is a bigger should become the standard at some point.
Swap should be 1G or so.

  • How do you do dual boot without Dual activation for CS3?

I know this has been discussed but I can't find the post called Daryl Pritchard, "Activating CS3 with both Vista and XP Pro on same system" #3, 21 May 2007 12:49 am .  That link seems to be dead.
I'm slow to make the switch, but I'm planning to install Vista on the same box I've had XP Pro on.  I have a LOT of software on this box (it normally takes 34 hours to install everything from scratch) including VIsual Studio (2003, 2005, 2008), Lotus Notes designer (R6.5, R8), 3D Studio Max, etc. etc. etc.  I'm not ready to flip the switch and just run the Vista upgrade.  I want to dual boot with XP on one partition and Vista on the other, so that I can boot to XP if something doesn't seem to be running correctly under Vista.
Here is my dilemna.  I also have Photoshop CS3 installed on my laptop, and I need it there because I travel every few weeks and still have to manipulate images.  I'd like to avoid deactivating licenses everytime I get on a plane or drive across town.  I don't want to have to use up both of my "activations" when I'm staying within the intent of the Eula - it's only going to be used on one machine.
How has everyone else faced this challenge?  I know there are plenty of people with dual boot set ups.
I'll deactivate Photoshop on XP Pro if I have to, but that's going to be a headache if I have to turn on the laptop everytime I work in XP on the desktop and need to modify a PSD image.

I believe you can only deactivate/activate 20 times, precisely to keep
people from swapping the two licenses amongst more than 2 computers, so
deactivating on your travel-computer will only work for the next few times
    you do it.
Depending on what things you do to your images, you might be able to get by
with using Elements to work with the PSDs.  The newer versions of Elements
lets you work with Layers so it may be ok.  Install the PSE trial and see
    how well it works.
If you must have Photoshop, and one copy needs to be on your laptop, then
you must choose dual-boot you want to use it on, and perhaps install the
trial on the other bootable partition and if it works fine for everything,
and at the end of 30-days, choose which one to keep activated, or decide
that you can upgrade your XP.  I think you should attempt to upgrade it,
anyway, just to see if it's even possible.   I think you can uninstall the
upgrade if you do it right away, and get back to your XP...I had to do that
when my graphics card refused to work, even though the Vista Upgrade Advisor
didn't complain.  Installing Vista from scratch seemed to work.  I just
bought a new HD and reinstalled everything.
Another thing to consider is that Windows 7 will be available for retail
purchase before Halloween and people like it better than Vista as far as
running things faster, so maybe just skip Vista.  The only glitch I had was
having to uninstall Nero's packet-writing (CDRW as a floppy) software after
I upgraded to Vista and it didn't quite work and I had to use a Nero-clean
utility to get rid of it.  It isn't compatible with Win7 and I could have
gotten around the problem by merely uninstalling Nero before upgrading and
putting it back, afterwards.  I have an older version of Nero was my actual
    problem.
I am running the Win 7 Ultimate RTM from my MSDN subscription and like it a
lot...more transparency and they finally combined the quick-links with the
actual task-bar so you can just pin things down there and they are
highlighted if they're running or not highlighted if not--sort of like a Mac
has been doing for a while, but with much smaller icons if you want.

  • Trouble dual-booting Mac Pro after moving - Boot Camp

Here's the story: My wife and I just moved a few miles away, and I transported my "late 2005" Mac Pro carefully on the front seat, on its side. Upon arrival, I am having great difficulty booting up.
Generally, I dual boot into either Snow Leopard or Windows XP. Here's what has been happening since the move:
I boot holding down the Option key. At this point, I have mouse movement, but no activity on the screen for about 5 minutes. When my hard drive options finally appear on the screen, (mouse movement is still normal at this point), or I can Left/Right Arrow between the two operating systems... no problem. However, as soon as I either click on the desired icon, or hit the Enter key, the mouse freezes on the screen and stays that way for perhaps 10 minutes or so before Mac OS starts up. Then operation seems normal.
But when I try booting into Windows XP, it spontaneously reboots into the Boot Camp screen... again very, very slowwwwly.
Has this ever happened to you? Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot/resolve this problem?
Thanks in advance for your time and experience.
    Eddie

    Begin with this:
Mac Pro came out in Aug 2006, so the fact you run Windows, you have later than any Late 2005 (which referred to PowerMac and G5s)
Normally I would travel with the hard drives in boxes, removed.
XP and also Windows 32-bit any version only offers 1.9GB usable RAM.
Depends on where XP is, on the same drive as OS X? or on its own?
Try check the drive is seated tightly.
    Run chkdsk
    Boot XP CD
Clone Mac OS? so you have an image if needed.
    Same goes for XP.
And if you set XP as the default boot OS?

  • How to create a Lion boot disk for Lion on a MBPRD?

I have a unique version of Lion on my MBPRD.  How do I create a Lion Boot Disk for this unique version?

Why is it a Unique version of Lion? The only versions of Lion are ones for older Macs, Before the Mid 2012 models came out, and a version that includes the newer drivers for the newest model Macs, Current shipping Mid 2012 models.
If you are talking about a version for the new Mid 2012 models then you will need to wait for Apple to update their Lion Download servers because right now they do not have the newest Lion version available on those servers.

  • Dual Booting Mac OS X and Arch, rEFInd fails to open initrd file

I gave up on trying to solo boot Arch on a MacBook(1,1), and I'm dual booting. I have Arch installed on its own partition, and rEFInd is installed and configured through Mac OS X. I followed the wiki's instructions on moving the initramfs files and creating refind_linux.conf in Arch's folder on the EFI partition, and when I reboot, Arch appears as a boot option! This is good news! However, when I select it, the following happens:
    rEFInd - Booting OS
    Starting vmlinuz-arch.efi
    Using load options 'root=/dev/sda4 ro rootfstype=ext4 systemd.unit=multi-user.target initrd=\EFI\arch\initramfs-arch.img'
Failed to open initrd file: EFI\arch\initramfs-img
My question is, do I need to install refind-efi on the Arch partition, even though I've installed rEFInd on Mac OS X?
Also, do I need to install GRUB in Arch, even though I've [attempted to] used EFISTUB to link rEFInd with Arch?
Thanks in advance for your help.

I got 32-bit UEFI to work on my macbook, and I found it to be rather straight forward.  But 32-bit UEFI is not incredibly common, and I wanted to have a 64-bit system so that I could potentially chroot into my other computer's disk if necessary.  So that is why I ended up using bios compatibility on my macbook.
Edit: Oh yeah, and yes, using MBR only is also another way in which you can use bios compatibility mode.  Basically you just need to have a MBR with more than one protective partition, and I think you need to have one partition marked as bootable in the MBR.  It has been a while since I got all that macbook stuff working though, so the info is a bit stale in my head.
