How do/did I get my printers' host names to resolve properly to their IP addresses?

I have a LaserJet P1505n and I gave it a host name of "Laser".  I have a Photosmart C7280 and I gave it a host name of "Color".  When I provide my browser with the URL "Color", that resolves to the IP address of the Photosmart C7280 and I get the C7200 Series web interface.  All good.  When I provide my browser with the URL "Laser", that causes my browser to initiate a search for "Laser".  Not what I wanted.  I want to have the URL "Laser" resolve to the IP address of the web interface of the P1505n.
How did I do that in the first place and how do I get it to happen for both printers?  This might be a printer unrelated question, but it works for one printer (the newer one) and not for another (the older one).  I thought I'd ask anyway.
[Why this is useful is the same reason you have domain names - so you can type in www.google.com and not have to look up the ever-changing IP address.  Granted by printers change IP addresses less often than Google.]

Hello,
Great question, I will look into this one, in the meantime I might recommend posting this question on Spiceworks, pasted below........Good Luck!

    > Is there any way to know the host name, port number, sid and the service name

    Why?
The host name in the HOST_NAME column of V$INSTANCE for example, may not be the hostname/IP address that the local Listener listens for connections on. Or the Listener can listen on that host name/IP and several other local IP addresses.
The port number used for listening for connections by clients, are determined by the Listener's configuration.
Thus if you can explain the requirement for this info, maybe the forum can provide better and more specific answers.

    Get-AzureService, Get-AzureRole & Get-AzureDeployment are not returning this data.

On one hand, as according to
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms176013.aspx, you shouldn't rely on that hostname due to some security mechanisms that are in place.

On the other hand though, you can also configure your own hostname for your VMs in the .csfg file, as according to
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windowsazure/jj156072.aspx. However, I'm not 100% positive whether .NET Framework will use the configured hostname as the exposed hostname

So there is no way to reverse out that Hostname from the instance with powershell?

  • BestBuy Pre-Order emails - How many did you get??

    Everyone,
How many emails did everyone get in regards to their BB iPhone 5 Pre-order?
I was first to place my pre-order yesterday morning at my local BestBuy.  Upon placing the order I got 2 emails immediately.
One emails subject was:  "Your Presales Agreement from Best Buy Mobile" which basically showed I placed a pre-order but there was no order reference number on that email.
The second emails subject was: "We received your order; Wait to pick up".  This email came imediately after the previous email and contains the date (9/14/12) of the order AND the Order Number.  So I feel like all is good with my pre-order.
Oddly, today I receieved ANOTHER "We received your order; Wait to pick up" email with today's date (9/14/12) and a completely DIFFERENT order number than yesterdays email.
So does this mean I have TWO orders reserved at my local Bestbuy?  My feeling is to just leave things alone and wait to see what I hear next Thursday evening/Friday.
Anyone else experience anything like this?

  • Windows 8.1 will not see the Printers host name or ip address

I have tried installing an OfficeJet Pro 8615 on two different Windows 8.1 computers (wireless)  but did not connect.  Pirnter is connected to network wireless (192.168.111.153). Router is 192.168.111.1. The printer was installed from a Vista (wired) desktop and it connected and printed fine. Both 8.1s can ping router but not the printer. Host name install does not work either. Router is a new Cisco RV180w. It works fine everywhere else. Printer wireless power is 5 of 6. Have looked for shared devices setting on Win 8.1 but have not found it yet. Win 8.1 computers are both 64bit and the install download showed 64x. I am running out of things to check. Can anyone help me? Win 8.1 computers sees other devices on the network but not the printer. Print & Scan Doctor does not see the printer either.
Now I am having the same problem with a Win7 (64) install. It can't see it either. Once I plugged this one into the network then it saw the printer and installed and printed. But if I unpluged the network wire and made it wireless then it stopped seeing the printer. So I am having some  kind of a wireless issue.

  • Getting OS X Host Name from Cambia

We would like to configure our OS X workstations to return their hostnames when scanned with Cambia (network monitoring software). Cambia uses netbios, tcp probes, dns lookup and nmap to discover the identity of nodes on the network. Can anyone tell me how to configure OS X to return its host name when Cambia does a scan??
I know netbios is a no-go, but I manually set the host name in the /etc/hostconfig file in the hope that would do it. It doesn't.
Is there a setting or software that would return the hostname via an nmap probe????

  • Get the Prtal host name

    Hi,

    Hi Naga,
There's no built-in method in Visual Composer for doing this. However, since Visual Composer can be enhanced with a Web Dynpro component, you can write a simple WebDynpro component that does this for you and then integrate it in your Visual Composer application. Here the info you'll need:

  • Getting ipaddress or host name for virtual server

I want to get the ipaddress or host name for virtual server in a cluster environment. If i do
    java.net.InetAddress.getLocalHost().getHostName()
it returns the ipaddress of the physical node currently running virtual server.
Is there any way to get the ipaddress or host name for virtual server ?

You can get the hostname by clicking on the account properties in outlook, but the port you connect to must be opened by your system admin.

  • Change the host name in Listener.ora to fixed IP address

in Listener.ora i want change host name to IP :
    ==== OLD ====
    LISTENER =

    (ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL= IPC)(KEY = ORCL))

    LISTENER =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL= TCP)(Host=100.100.110.1)(Port= 1521))
    (ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL= IPC)(KEY = ORCL))
how can i do this .

It is not recommended to change the name for an IP addressIt is not recommended by who? AFAIK there is no such sentence in documentation.
    But there is other:
host Required. Specify the host name or IP address of the database server computer.
Instad of "It is not recommended..." better use "Consider this..."
, as if ever it changes in the future, you'll have to be back and change once again your ip.The same is truth when we are speaking about FQDN (fully qualified domain name).
How often your company changes the IP adresses on server platform?
    My experience from past:
    First case:
My company has rebranded and and domain name has been changed but IP has not. Unfortunatelly we were not using OID for resolving. If there were FQDN used then would have to make changes in many files. Fortunatelly we were using IP addresses.
Now we are using OID for resolving of tnsnames (as primary method).
What I want to say is both solutions (FQDN or IP) are fine. Each of them has some advantages and also disadvantages.

  • How to patch DemoIdentity.jks with new host name

Somehow, after WebLogic was installed on a particular box, the DNS name for the local host was changed slightly. I created a domain on that box and I was about to start a managed server from the admin console, and I noticed that the NodeManager was not reachable, reporting the following error (hostname tweaked):
[Security:090504]Certificate chain received from localhost - 127.0.0.1 failed hostname verification check. Certificate contained foo.adm.tst.us.company.net but check expected localhost
I confirmed this by listing the identity keystore.
From the Unix prompt, "hostname" returns "foo.tst.us.company.net".
I looked at another box with a similar configuration, and the hostname of the identity cert matches the output of "hostname".
So, now I have to figure out how to repair this. If your first response is to say to modify the "hosts" file, I'm considering that out of bounds at this point. Making changes that require root access are a P.I.T.A here, so I want to avoid that.
I think the best way to fix this would be to patch the identity keystore. I believe I would have to create a new self-signed identity cert and put it into the keystore. Can someone spell out the basic steps I'd have to go through for this?

So far, I've done the following:
    * CertGen to create the cert with the correct hostname
    * used keytool -import ... to import the cert into the identity keystore
it seemed to me like "ImportPrivateKey" was just a veneer over keytool, so I didn't try that. I could be wrong.
At this point, I see two issues:
    1. When I did the import, I saw that the new cert had an expiration date of tomorrow. That seems like a problem. I don't see any option in Certgen to specify an expiration date.
    2. After importing the cert, I'm not sure what, if anything, I should restart before checking to see whether it worked. I tried just doing directly to the machine monitoring tab, and it still reports the mismatched hostname error.

  • How can I setup a dynamic global host name in airport utility 6?

I found the directions for 5.6 but I cannot install on mountain lion.
    Thanks -
    Donna

There are several things that you can do to work around this issue. None of them will be officially supported by Apple, so you will be on your own if you decide to try this.
If you have been using Time Machine for backups, you can go back a month or two, locate AirPort Utility 5.6 and restore it to the desktop on the Mountain Lion machine.
Then, simply drag and drop it into the Utilities folder inside the Applications folder. It will run fine, and you can keep both AirPort Utility 5.6 and 6.x on your Mac.
Or, if you have another Mac there that is still running Lion or Snow Leopard, you can copy the AirPort Utility 5.6 application and then paste it into the Utilities folder under Applications.
If one of those ways will not work, there is another, but it gets complicated. Post back if you need more info.

  • How to create and access a Virtual Host on the J2EE WAS?

Hello, I have searched through the Forums and help.sap.com and found a lot of information on how to set up a Virtual Host on the J2EE server but am having issues with it working.
The goal is to provide a simple virtual host on the J2EE Portal server to host some static image and HTML files. Previously I had stored these files in the standard publicly accessible SAP J2EE folder location /usr/sap/<SID>/JCxx/j2ee/cluster/serverx/apps/sap.com/com.sap.engine.docs.examples/servlet_jsp/_default/root/. This location is resolved to when using the URL <host>:50000 for example.
The main issue here is that during Portal support pack applications this folder gets wiped out and we have to remember to save off any custom files and folders in this location and replace them.
I would like to create a virtual host to store these static files (i.e., branding-image.jpg, etc...).
I have run through the process of creating the virtual host both using Visual Administrator and <host>:50000/nwa but am not able to get the virtual host name to resolve properly.
The following are the steps that I have taken. Let's assume the standard SAP portal (i.e., xSS, etc...) is running properly on <host>:50000.
    1. create virtual host via Visual Administrator/NWA called 'sapwebserver1' by using the Create Host option (takes on the attributes of the 'default' standard virtual host)
    2. change the root directory for this virtual server to a custom folder at E:/tmp/mimes (where E:/usr is where the J2EE files are all installed), no start files were set up and nothing else was changed in the new virtual host record, no permissions were changed on the /tmp/mimes folder from whatever the default Windows user permissions are normally set, I am using a local Windows  administrator account but I have not seen any reference in the help files or the examples that indicate that any specific permissions updates need to be made on the virtual host root folder
    3. restarted the J2EE server as well as the HTTP Provider service
    4. before updating the company DNS, I wanted to test this locally on the server and so have updated the server's local HOSTS file with a <host IP address>   sapwebserver1 entry
    5. from that server I can ping the sapwebserver1 virtual host name and it resolves properly to the machine's physical IP address
According to all of the documentation and examples I have seen I should now be able to (from that server) launch a browser and access the static files in the virtual host by referring to http://sapwebserver1:50000/branding-image.jpg for example. This is not working and the browser just brings up a Cannot display the web page error in IE. By referring to the virtual host name sapwebserver1:50000 it's supposed to hit the J2EE server and based on the host name sapwebserver1 realize that it should resolve to the root directory E:/tmp/mimes. This is not happening. Just as a test I have created a copy of the 'default' virtual host and called it sapwebserver2, updated the local HOSTS file for this entry, and tried to see if that would work like the 'default' host. My expectation was that http://sapwebserver2:50000 would behave the same was as http://<host>:50000 but it too fails to resolve just like the sapwebserver1 virtual host refernce.
Would anyone happen to have any pointers on what to do next? I just want a simple virtual host to be able to serve up some static images and files.
Thanks for any insight or assistance you might be able to provide here.
    Graham

This defeats the purpose of trying to centralize SAP-related web resources on the SAP server. Typically IIS/Apache or other non-SAP servers are under the control of IT and not the SAP BASIS group.
We simply would like to have a centralized location to store static web files so that they are not overwritten during Portal support pack applications.
