  • How enter prise search works in sharepoint 2010

In my organization enterprise search is configured ,
    -- sharepoint farm has
-- two index servers ( share point server search  service is  configured in this servers)
two web front end servers(sharepoint foundation web applications, and  share point server search  service is  configured in this servers)
    - two  application servers( central admin service is running)
    - one sql server
here i am new to this area
here how entr prise search works,  why index servers used
index data stored sepratly in thi servers?
and when user query for any documentid where it will search initially
i know the concept of search there are 3 things
    1) query
    2)index
    3)crawler
    adil

    Hi,
In Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 Search, index partitions are groups of query components, each of which holds a subset of the full text index and which return search results to the query originator. Each index partition is associated with a specific property
database containing metadata associated with a specific set of crawled content.
The index server manages the crawling and indexing of SharePoint Server content and maintains the index file. The index service works with the query service to let you search SharePoint Server content.
Every SharePoint Server deployment must have at least one index server. Additional index servers may be necessary as the deployment grows. There can only be one index server per server farm.
If you use the web front end as your query server.  This tells the index server to propagate its index to the WFEs that are set as query servers so that they have a local copy of the index.
When someone does a search (this is done on the WFE), then that WFE will search itself locally instead of going across the network to query the index server.
This increases speed at the time of query, but it of course introduces additional overhead in terms of having multiple full copies of the index on the network and the network demand of propagating those index copies all the time.
If you select the query role on your index server, then the index will not get propagated and all searches will query the index server across the network.
For more information, you can refer to the following article.

  • How set Google Search to Google US on IE9 via GPO

I have several servers hosted in the uk , that give US Users access to work , but when they use google search through IE, it uses Google UK not US, is there anyway to set search to US (default).

    Hi,
So here we are in a domain environment? If yes, then do we have any DCs on the US side? How are the public IP settings assigned to the US side? Please also refer to the google search help page for the locations:
    Change your location on Google,
We may consider to use IEM to set the US google the homepage and then link it only to the US
site, regarding the detailed information for home page settings using GPO, please refer to the below links:

    Hope this might help

  • Most search engines are not working, only Google Search works and I get 404 file not found error when clicking the links.

I have been trying virus killers, malware software from microsoft, I uninstalled Firefox and reinstalled it, I used the option to change all my options to the basic default installed options, I am able to search without problems using Internet Explorer on all search engines, Google Search engine works in firefox browser; but all the links give the 404 file not found error. Links from my Gmail account do not work either...giving me the 404 error. Firefox is much faster than Internet explorer however, this link problem makes me wonder if firefox is really any good.

Many site issues can be caused by corrupt cookies or cache. In order to try to fix these problems, the first step is to clear both cookies and the cache.
Note: ''This will temporarily log you out of all sites you're logged in to.''
To clear cache and cookies do the following:
#Go to Firefox > History > Clear recent history or (if no Firefox button is shown) go to Tools > Clear recent history.
#Under "Time range to clear", select "Everything".
#Now, click the arrow next to Details to toggle the Details list active.
#From the details list, check ''Cache'' and ''Cookies'' and uncheck everything else.
#Now click the ''Clear now'' button.
Further information can be found in the [[Clear your cache, history and other personal information in Firefox]] article.

  • They only way Google search works is if I delete all cookies in FF 4; how do I fix this?

I had Google toolbar installed before upgrading to v 4; it survived the upgrage, but now re-directs me to their "safe" page and puts me in an endless loop of typing in the distorted letters. If I go to google.com, page comes up, but search function does not work. If I delete all cookies, everything works. Is there a fix for this, or is it a google problem?

Clear the cache and the cookies from sites that cause problems.
    "Clear the Cache":
    * Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Offline Storage (Cache): "Clear Now"
"Remove the Cookies" from sites causing problems:
    * Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

  • How to make search work in iTunes 11.

    Quick tip:
If you go to the Song view, click on the little arrow in the search box and uncheck 'Search Entire Library'.   The search now works as before; the default way is horrific; it is so slow. I haven't been so frustrated since I tried to use a Microsoft Vista computer!

That seems crazy to me. The old search took .0001 seconds! I find the Clapton song and album as well as a song by Little Axe.  also showing up is the great song by Sir Douglas and the cover by Mott the Hoople.  The old search returns a list of those songs and the new one comes up with that Vista- like drop down.
I can't go back to a world where you need to wait for  results like this. Now, back to 'at the crossroads'- that's a great song. Thanks for that search term!

  • In version 3.x.x I used to be able to type search terms into the address bar and the page would load, similar to Google's "Feeling Lucky" button. Now it just brings up a Google search for the terms I typed in. How can I get this time saving feature back?

The change between Firefox 3.6.* and Firefox 4 is how location bar search works. In Firefox 3.6 it uses Google "Browse by name" search. With the browse by name search, it performs a Google search and if there is a clear match it will take you to the site, otherwise it shows the Google search result. With Firefox 4 it just performs a Google search if you type something which is not recognised as a URL.
To get the Firefox 3.6 behaviour on Firefox 4 you need to change a hidden preference.
    # Type '''about:config''' into the location bar and press enter
    # Accept the warning message that appears, you will be taken to a list of preferences
    # Locate the preference '''keyword.URL''', double-click on it and change its value to the link shown below

  • Google search does not work from comcast home page

When I try to do a google search from the comcast home page, I keep getting a timeout error. However, google searches work everywhere, but the comcast home page.

Then as i mentioned in one of previous reply, ask about this problem from the Comcast Techincal Support. They will know what's changed on their website.
OR for further testing, Create a New Profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
    -> [[Basic Troubleshooting#w_8-make-a-new-profile|Basic Troubleshooting - Make a New Profile]]
-> Set Comcast's website as your homepage in the New Profile.
IF that New Profile works then you can recover your Bookmarks and Passwords from the Old Profile.
-> [[Recovering important data from an old profile]]
Check and tell if its working.

  • Does firefox 4 have the 'feeling lucky' google search feature when you type phrases into the URL bar? ATM it goes to google where i then have to click on website.

if i type simply phrases in to the URL bar (i,e bbc) it use to take me directly to www.bbc.co.uk. but now in firefox 4, it seems to go to google.co.uk instead displaying all the searched items. I then have to click on the link i want.
Is there any way of enabling this?

Firefox is highly customizable and you may be able to customize it to meet your needs.
If you do not like the new UI, you can make Firefox 4 look and behave more like Firefox 3.6, for details see http://www.computertechtips.net/64/make-firefox-4-look-like-ff-3-6

  • In Firefox 3.6, typing "gmail" in the address bar would simply open the gmail page (and similarly for youtube, etc.). This version brings up a google search instead of just opening gmail or youtube, etc. Is there any way to "fix" this?

  • Cannot use Google search

I recently bought a MAC OS X and so far I like it. However I am unable to use the Google search when I am in Safari. I have to go thru the Google web page to do my searches. I do not know if I messed something up while I was learning how to use my new MAC. I am a former Windows user so the MAC system is a learning process for me at this time. So if anybody can help me I sure would appreciate it. I have followed all the instructions so far with no success.

Well, there is no Return button to click on in Safari, so I'll assume you meant press the Return key. If nothing happens, what were you doing just before this started, or has it always not worked?
You should try creating a new User Account for testing purposes and try using Safari there to see if Google search works; if it does, then the problem is limited to your primary account. If it doesn't, then it's a system-wide problem.
Do you have any Input Managers installed that might be interfering (look in ~/Library and also /Library for a folder named InputManagers). If you have that folder, then you should try creating a folder in the same location (~/Library and/or /Library) named "InputManagers (Disabled)" move them into the corresponding folder, then try restarting Safari to see if searching works again. If it does, one or more of them are the culprit, so list them in your reply.

  • Google search does not search after entering search term and pressing enter.

When I type a search term into Google and then hit Enter, the page is inert. It does not go to search results. Or if I type a search term and select the Instant search suggested term and hit Enter, the search results page does not appear. If I go into Google settings and turn off Instant, then the Google Search works, but it is a waste of time to always have to turn off Google Instant. There is some conflict between Firefox and Google Instant because there is no problem using Google Instant in Internet Explorer.
