How do I access GMail via POP?

Before upgrading to Mountain Lion I had Mail configured to access my GMail account via POP rather then IMAP. I mistakely deleted the GMail POP account configuration. Now, Mail 6 won't allow me to chose how to access GMail - POP or IMAP. Apple removed the Account Type option that was present during account set-up. Is there any way I can create a mail account configuration that uses the POP protocol?
Thanks,
John

IMAP is inferior to POP for a lot of business applications. It's not really correct to say IMAP is better than POP, they are different methods with different feature sets. With IMAP there's no ability to store a message on the server if you download, then it is deleted on a client. This can be a disaster when you have multiple people monitoring the same email, or you are using multiple devices. Once accidental misclick archive filing for example while on your iPhone can cause your desktop not to receive the mail, or not be filtered properly. Many business depend on this for orders, customer service, and general communication. IMAP cannot be trusted, even with myself as a developer. Using IMAP is like relying on interns at Pixar to use Unix commands perfectly and not delete the feature film with a late night brainfart.
When you receive a lot of email, things get overlooked, and IMAP has been the root of more than one catastrophe in my life. The main upside to IMAP is that you can manage the space of email, but this is 2013, and my entire mail archive since 1994 is less than 50gb. I think space doesn't matter much anymore, better to be safe with pop, than sorry. I might get my email 1-5 minutes later having to fetch it instead of being pushed, but that's ok considering the consequences of the alternative. Email is not designed to be an instant thing anyway.
It's annoying gmail defaults to IMAP in Apple mail now, but not in IOS. Makes no sense.

  • Tough Decision: Gmail Web Interface or Gmail Via Pop Using Mac Mail

Thought I would open a discussion about this since I have been having a tough time making a decision. I love using Gmail's web interface but hate losing the integration with Mac OS. I forward all my email from different providers to my Gmail so I can access all my email from any computer. This is very handy for me.
I have tried using the mail app to access gmail via pop, but one thing I hate is when I reply to an email from a different provider than gmail it will use the gmail reply address. Gmail's web interface will use the account that the email was sent to as the reply address automatically.
I am almost certain that others are in the same quandry as I am. If so, what is your solution?
    20" iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

You can enter the email addresses for your other providers in Mail and have them show up in a pop-up menu when you compose new mail; then you can select which address to use as the outgoing mail address.
Go to Mail->Preferences->Accounts, and undeer the Account Information, look for the Email Address field (below the Description filed). Enter your other email addresses in there, separated by commas, then close the Preferences and Save the changes.
Now create a new email and the pop-up menu should let you choose which email address will show up on the email.

  • SL/Mail 4.1: Cannot Fetch Gmail via POP

Since upgrading to SL/Mail 4.1, mail.app will no longer fetch gmail via POP access (this worked fine before the upgrade). However, sending mail from mail.app works fine. I get an error dialog, "Mail cannot verify the identity of pop.gmail.com." Clicking the Details button, reveals that the certificate is "imap.gmail.com," even though the account has been set-up as a POP account from within mail.app and in my Gmail account settings. Anyone else notice this? Ideas? Many thanks.

Having the same problem on my wife's Macbook Pro. I set the account up as a POP account a few days ago and now when I looked at it today, it was both an IMAP AND a POP account. I deleted the account and tried adding it again, but was NOT given the option for custom account setup (that little check box at the first screen for new accounts). The server will not authenticate under POP because it is imap.gmail.com.

  • I cannot access gmail via Firefox 3.6.22

Because you have upgraded Firefox and seen to it that the new version will not work well with older versions of OS X (mine is 10.4.11) I cannot access my gmail any longer via Firefox. Gmail no longer supports the older Firefox. You are all in cahoots. This kind of planned obsolescence is disgusting. It forces people to continue upgrading and spending. Capitalists! disgusting!

Nope. I have a mac, running OS X 10.4.11, and I can no longer access gmail if I use the Firefox browser. it just spins it wheels. I can however access it no problem with Camino. Sure, not all options are now available to me, but I frankly dont care. I just want to access my mail. No go with Firefox.

  • Urgent: how can I add gmail via microsoft exchange?

    Dear friends,
Please help to instruc me how to add gmail via Microsoft Exchange in system Mountain lion.
I already fill in all info probaly, but it does not work, keeps showing "the exchange server ...... is not responding." please help, thanks so mcuh.

All.  I too was hoping that I could set up osx mail using exchange so it is a real shame it doesn't work the same as iOS even in Mountain Lion and still not in 10.8.2 where some more platform unification updates where made but then if it is Google that have to supply the server / make available....
Anyway, My primary reason for wanting to do this was contact sync.  However, I now have contacts synced with OSX contacts following another thread you can search for.  It was as simple as going into preferences accounts in the contacts app and setting up the google account.  The same as selecting the default google type account in mail instead of exchange.
If mail is open, even minimised you will get mail notifications even using IMAP in the new OSX notification centre.  And with contacts google account set up you will see another sync icon next to the time capsule icon.
So now all is working on OSX.

  • How can I access Gmail's web settings (like away messages) on iPad?

  • How do I access RunState via the C interface?

I'm utilzing TestStand by controlling it via a C++ program and TestStand as a COM module.  I haven't been able to find how to access the RunState property.  Thanks.
    -G-

    Hey Grasshopper,
I'm not certain, but it sounds like you are building a User Interface in C++ to operate your sequences, much like the one you can find at C:\Program Files\National Instruments\TestStand 3.1\OperatorInterfaces\NI\Full-Featured\C++ using MFC.  If this is the case, then the way to get access to the RunState property is by utilize UIMessages.  You should be able to do a search on the forums or in the Developer Zone and find some more information and sample code about UI Messages, but in a nutshell, you'll send a message to the User Interface that you are building by utilizing the ActiveX adapter (Action Step) in a TestStand sequence (The Method is PostUIMessageEx and can be found in the Thread class).  When you send the data you will want to send ThisContext via the ActiveX parameters.  You will then use the ApplicationMgr Control in your UI to register the UserMessage event and then create a function to be called when this event does occur.  In this function, you can get the Sequence Context from the ActiveX parameter and at that point can handle it just like any other code module to get and set items within your locals, runstate, or whatever you want.  That should give you a start, let me know if you into major issues.

  • Iphone4 - How can I access net via GPRS or EDGE

    All in title really
Net loads fine with Wi-Fi all pages i want really fast
but soon as i turn router off it will not work any sites
How can I tell it to go GPRS instead og Wi-Fi please
also have issues with not able to send SMS texts I choose a recipient then after typing the message the ''SEND'' button is greyed out and wont let me press it????why????help?????

The iPhone will connect to the fastest internet connection that is available at the time. If wi-fi and 3G network access is on, when leaving the range of an available wi-fi network that your iPhone has access to and is connected with or when turning wi-fi access off, if your carrier has 3G network access available, the iPhone will connect to your carrier's 3G network. If 3G network access is not available or you have 3G access turned off, the iPhone will connect to your carrier's EDGE or GPRS network, whichever is available at the time.
This is automatic and seamless. If you don't have internet access via your carrier's cellular network, contact your carrier to ensure that data or internet via their network is provisioned properly for your account.

  • How can I access gmail on this computer?

    Hi folks
I feel like I've been given the keys to the PLAY GROUND!
I've dreamt of playing (let's pretend I want to get some work done!!) on one of these beasts for ever.
I will always use the DARK FORCES (read MS & GoGoGooGoogle) for some of my communications; especially emails...   lol
I have tried to set the preferences so that I can "sync" gmail with icloud mail, but it is not obvious to me how I open gmail here.
Any help in see what I missed is appreciated & will be put to good use.
Cheers from a very chirpy Phil Tozer.

I use Outlook (not Mail) but here is a screen shot of my Gmail account set up:
Note that this is an IMAP account (which you can use in Mail as well). No need to override the incoming default port but you must use port 465 for the smtp server.
    Hope this helps,
    Clinton

  • How efficent is accessing Lite via ODBC?

(we haven't got yet Oracle Lite nor know too much about it ...)
we developed a "prototipe" using MS Access, and now we are planning to upsize to a client/server architecture, and we are thinking to use 8iLite, but we would like not to throw away the front end, so we are going to use ODBC: is it reasonable to access an 8iLite server via the ODBC driver, or we need to use native API calls to achieve aceptable performance?
    thank you for any information

Is anybody still curious about this?

  • Mail Won't retrieve my emails from gmail via POP

I configured everything for POP routing with my gmail account about a month ago. I know I did everything right because it worked for quite some time. About 2 days ago after I had to force quit mail it stopped fetching my mail. Everytime I hit get mail, or load the program it just shows the busy signal for a while next to my inbox and then doesn't bring anything. if i log into my google mail account, often times, there is new mail there that should have been forwarded. I got affirmative replies from the connection doctor saying it was able to connect and I double checked that all of my settings were correct. I also verifed that google mail was enabled for POP usage. Does anyone have any ideas what the problem could be? Thanks is advance for the help.

    Kurius,
Your problem is clearly not the same as the one being discussed here. The only thing in common is that a Gmail account is involved. Make sure you’re setting up your Gmail account as described here:

Note that you lose privacy when using Gmail (and Yahoo):
Gmail and Yahoo both scan users' emails. They do algorithmic analysis of your email messages, targeting ads that relate to the content of your messages. Defenders point out that "they", are not people, but machines. And they argue that it is a harmless way of making advertising relevant to users and raising revenues.
Others might say that whether a machine or a human is doing the work, the potential for a privacy breach is there.
