How do I access the music on photos on my external hard drive, on my MBA?

I bought a 64Gb MBA slightly used, and knew the space wasn't going to be enough for my music and photos, so I bought an external hard drive, (the iomega helium), thinking that I could just load it with my pics and music, and access it from there, when I wanted to view the pics and music on my MBA when I wanted to. Well, I loaded the libraries onto the EHD, and upon opening both iTunes and iPhoto up, can't figure out how I access them off the EHD. Any help?
Also, on the first version of the MBA trackpad, how do I right click? Thanks in advance!

Launch the applications with the Option key held down, and click on Choose Library if you've created a full library on that drive. If not, create one and import the content.
Also, on the first version of the MBA trackpad, how do I right click?
Click here and perform a secondary click, or control-click an item.

I want to move my music and photos to an external hard drive from my iMac.  What kind of hard drive should I get?  Will it remove it from iMac and only be on external hard drive?

How to correctly move your media:
iTunes: How to move the library to an EHD

It is important that the External Hard Drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled).
And also make sure that all is working to your Satisfaction before Deleting anything Off your Mac.

how can i use the airport time capsule as a external hard drive?

Why do you recommend not place things like iTunes libraries or photo libraries on the drive? It was what I am looking for...
I suggest that you ask the experts over in the iPhoto Support Community about their opinions on placing an iPhoto or Aperture library on the Time Capsule....even if you plan to use a wired connection for your Mac and the Time Capsule.
But, if Terrence Devlin answers, be prepared for a lecture about why you should not ever do this.
If you place the iTunes library on the Time Capsule, be prepared for iTunes to give you messages about not being able to find the library.
In addtion, LaPastenague has the answer for you in a nutshell......corruption problems.
Bottom line....the Time Capsule is for your backups.....not "everyday" files and especially not libraries.

  • How do I export all my Iphoto photos to my external hard drive, maintaining their current state?

So I did the classic click and drag method, putting all my photos into my external hard drive, fast and easy. But what I noticed was that no information about the pictures was kept, no dates, locations etc. If you drag one picture the information comes with it, but not if you take a bunch at the same time. Then the original date is replaced by today's. I've got over 20.000 photos and I really want them on my hard drive, can someone please help me out here?

Export them using the appropriate options to include the desired metadata - see the user tip on exporting for details on eachoption
As to date - you probably are confusing the file date with the photo date - two totally different things - the photos date is internal to the photo in the EXIF data and is view using photo viewing software like preview or iPhoto - the file date it only concerned with th efile information and is views with file viewer software like nder

  • How do I get the iTunes program to go to a particlar site to obtain the music that is on an external hard drive

I have reinstalled iTunes after a small calamity, but I had a backup file of all my music on an external hard drive. Question 1. Where does the program find the music as what has come up is not complete? Question 2. How do you get the program to look in a particular drive for the music that is there?
    Cheers

Where are you trying to put the folder? At the top level of the volume? That top level is only writable by the system (or an authenticated admin, which is why it's asking for your admin password).
If you are trying to move into a folder, repeat the "Get Info" on the folder into which you are trying to move. You want to see that your current account has "Read & Write" privileges.
Yes, third-party NTFS drivers can affect the behavior of volumes they control. (One could say that is the whole point of their existence.) They are supposed to be act just like native volumes, but they don't always succeed. I have no specific knowledge of whether Tuxera NTFS drivers would cause the problems you are seeing; I use a different brand..

  • How can I tell the app store to ignore my external hard drive?

I have a macbook pro, that was running 10.8..  I wanted to upgrade to Yosemite, but was very afraid I would regret it, so I got an external hard drive, made a bootable clone, and then installed yosemite onto that, upgraded XCode, etc-- made sure everything would actually work..  After I saw everything was relatively good and painless, I then went to install Yosemite on my main computer..
Whoops?  Yosemite installer is gone?  It self deletes?  That is really annoying since it's a 5.8gb download...  Anyway, I re-download it, format my MBP hard drive and install from scratch.
I then boot from my MBP-- and go to the app store to install XCode, and---  it just has "OPEN" as an option, not install..  When I click OPEN, it's opening it off my external hard drive.  WHAT?
So I unmount my external hard drive..  Click install..  remount my external hard drive, it goes along downloading the multi-gigabyte XCode file...  I continue copying the various needed files from my bootable clone to my MBP...  Two hours later, the download finishes...  Guess what?  No XCode in my Applications.
Apparently when I remounted my external drive, it decided "I already have XCode!  no need for this!", and discarded the download?????
...  Anyway, needless to say, this is ridiculously annoying.  Is there a way to tell the app store to NOT look at anything except my internal HD?

Check the date & version of the external Xcode. If that is current drag it to the Apps folder, eject the external & run Xcode. It should update if it has any available.
I don't know what would have caused it to abort or remove the download. It's possible it installed into your user folder, check for the Applications folder in there.
Does the store list it as installed with & without the external connected?

  • How do i move the contents of iphoto to an external hard drive

My iphoto has 37GB of photos on it which I want to move to a Seagate external drive which has 500GB space, but when I try to move the folders through Finder they wont stick, any suggestions?

Below is an example for how to move iMovie files to an external drive. This works for iPhoto too, just change the folders in the text below.
    1. Copy all iMovie folders (in the Movies folder) to the external drive.
    iMovie Events
    iMovie Projects
    iMovie Sharing
    2. Wait until finished
    3. Rename the iMovie folders on the internal drive to something like
    iMovie Events.orig
    iMovie Projects.orig
    iMovie Sharing.orig
3.On the external drive, click on the created folder
    iMovie Events
    iMovie Projects
    iMovie Sharing
press Alt+Command key (apple key) and then drag the folders back to the Movies folder on your internal drive. It will create alias (links) to the external folders.
    4. Start iMovie. It should now look for the iMovie folders in the Movies folder, which points to an external driv.
    5. If everything works well, the .orig folder may be deleted on the internal drive.
This kind of trick works for allmost all folders you want to move to an externa place (drive, network drive)
    Hope this helps.

  • How do I access the music from my Mac drive while booted into Windows?

How do I access the music from my Mac drive while booted into Windows via Bootcamp? I tried using MacDrive but it's not supported for Vista 64-bit edition. Is there another program out there that I can use? I just want to be able to access my music that's on Leopard while in Vista. Any advice will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Your best bet is to move the music on the Windows side since Leopard will be able to read and play the music from the mounted Windows drive (Leopard will not be able write anything to the Windows NTFS partition).
In your case it won't work the other way around.

Hello friends.. I have a similar question, in that I would like to purchase the 2TB TC for use as a NAS device, in addition to taking advantage of the Air Port extreme.. Then I could dump my Linksys router.
I was originally looking at a Synology NAS solution, but the TC seems like it can meet my needs.
I have a Synology NAS as well as the Time Capsule.  If you look at the 3.2 beta program, the Synology actually attempts to replicate TC functionality in that you can use it with Time Machine on your Mac.
I must say, Airport on the TC is definitely a nice feature!

In addition to the obvious feature of the backup, can I indeed also use the TC as a NAS drive to access from remote locations (example from the office)?
I'm surprised more people aren't using the TC as a dedicated NAS deviced.. I've searched high and low on forums around the web, and don't seem to see many people trying to use it as I've outlined.
I can't see why this wouldn't fufill my needs, and take the place of a separate NAS solution (like the Synology, or iOmega, Seagate, etc....)
Has anyone used this TC as such?
Yes, you can do this and it's something I've been trying to do, but I'm currently having issues.  I have another thread stating I consistently get "connection failed" messages.  I'm basically storing my music/photo/video files on the TC and keeping my Mac hard drive fairly lean.  In terms of NAS functionality, the TC is very basic.  Synology/QNAP and others have a lot more features so don't rule them out.

  • How do I save just my photos to an external hard drive and still access them in iphoto

I have a lot of photos that take up space on my hard drive. It is now full and I need to continue to use them but i need to load new photo also. How do i save the old photos onto an external hard drive and then still access them in iphoto?

This is where iTunes stores backups for different operating systems: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4946
I do not use a Windows machine, have a Windows Vista Dell I rarely startup now.  But, from what I remember with Win boxes is, you will have to create on the external hard drive a file system like that one iTunes normally uses, and then in the iTunes preferences or control panel edit the location for the storage to specify the name of the external hard drive, or its letter code, with the name of that file system you created on the exernal drive.
I would also move all of the files from the internal file system to the external since you have now told iTunes that is where they are...before deleting from the internal drive, test iTunes to see that it goes where you want it to go.

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • Is it possible to have two USB drives for the IPad?  I want to bring RAW photo files from my camera, through the IPad and back to an external hard drive.  One of my cameras does not use an SD card.  How can I do this?

Is it possible to have two USB drives for the IPad?  I want to bring RAW files from my camera through the IPad and out to an external hard drive.  One of my cameras has an SD card but the other one doesn't have a card that would fit in any of the camera devices I've seen on line.  Realted to this, I bought the IPad camera accessory.  Can I put the SD card in the device and also hook the external hard drive to the USB port of the accessory and download from the camera to the hard drive?  Can I put Lightroom or the Nikon photo editing software on the IPad?  Right now I carry a PC laptop and external hard drives with me on wildernes trips.  Internet and WiFi are not available.  Because I shoot so many photos and they're in RAW I need to download from the camera to the external drive because I run out of memory on the PC (and it has much more memory than the IPad).  I have Nikon NX software and lightroom on my PC.  I'd love to be able to reduce the weight I carry by using the IPad to edit my photos each night while on trips.  Is this possible and how would I do it?  I'd appreciate any guidance.

No, the camera connection kit only supports the copying of photos and videos to the Photos app, it doesn't support copying content off the iPad. For your second camera instead of the SD reader part of the kit, does the iPad to camera cable not work with it for direct transfer to the iPad ?
For Lightroom and Nikon software again no - you can only install apps that are available in the iTunes app store on your computer and the App Store app on the iPad, 'normal' PC and Mac (OS X) software are not compatible with the iPad (iOS). There are some apps that perform fairly basic editing functions that are available in the store, but nothing as sophisticated as, for example, Lightroom.

my hard drive with all my actual music files died.  how can I transfer the music on my ipod classic to another drive?

If you purchased all of the songs through itunes store, please follow these steps:
    1. Open up Itunes and Click on Itunes Store
    2. Once you're in the Itunes Store look to right side of the screen and you should see the word "purchased". Click purchased and you'll be sent to a purchase screen.
    3. Click on "All Songs" and then it will show all the songs you've downloaded. From there you just hit the button that looks like a cloud with an arrow on it, and it will download all the songs all over again.
If you didn't purchase them through Itunes, then you'll have to download software that will strip the songs from your iPod onto your computer. Here is a guide about how to copy iPod music. Hope it helps. Feel free to email me if you need further help.
