How do i activate my iphone?
My iphone 4s was given to me and it is locked under a provider. the phone came with a sim already in it. The phone was factory reset, and now the phone will not read the sim card, so i can not activate it. please help
You need your own SIM card for your account with the provider to which the phone is locked. It won't activate using the previous owner's deactivated account.

I'm not sure I understand what you're asking, but I'll try to answer! You can either connect to iTunes and set up and activate there, or you can also use the setup assistant to set up your iPhone. As far as carrier activation, you'll have to follow the protocol that your carrier uses. Either switch SIM card, or call the number they use to allow device activation. Is that what you were wanting to know?

If your phone was previously hacked to unlock it, when you updated the hack was removed and it's re-locked to the original carrier. The phone will now activate and operate only with that original carrier.

You need to enter the id, and the password, of the account that the phone is linked to.
Did you buy the phone new or used ? If you bought the phone used and it's still linked to the previous owner's account then you will have to contact the previous owner and ask him/her to remove the phone from their account : Find My iPhone Activation Lock: Removing a device from a previous owner’s account - Apple Support.
If you bought the phone new and it's your account then enter the id and password that you were using in Settings > iCloud on it -

Unless your iPhone is officially unlocked by the carrier the iPhone is locked to, you cannot activated it with a different sim.
