How do I activate Windows 8 using vmware fusion on my MacBook Pro?

I have a MacBook pro and there are a few Windows programs that I need to run. So I purchased VMWARE Fusion 5 and Windows 8 pro. I installed both with no issues except now I'm being prompted to activate windows. When I go to activate it with the product key, it says that the product key is only able to be used for upgrading, but not a clean install. I'm not sure what I need to do now. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Yes as with Windows 7 if you used a Upgrade Win 7 disc it won't WANT To Activate and to get around it you do another install of Win 7 over the top of the original Win 7 install and it make it look like you are Upgrading and allows you to use an Upgrade key.
MS really screwed up with Win 8. There really isn't any FULL VERSION Windows 8 install DVDs. They are all Upgrade DVDs no matter how much you pay for it. So to do a Clean install, on real hardware or in a Virtual Machine, you have to jump through some hoops.

    I apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the exact nature of your question. If you are asking about the system requirements for running various versions of Windows under Bootcamp, or just more generally how to set up Bootcamp on your Mac, you may find the following articles/pages helpful:

  • How does one continue to use Mail on the early MacBook Pro, Model 1,1, that is not upgradable to Lion?  I have been running iCloud on my iPhone (OS5) and iMac (Lion) along with the MacBook Pro (OS Version 10.6.8)

    How does one continue to use Mail on the early MacBook Pro, Model 1,1, that is not upgradable to Lion?  I have been running iCloud on my iPhone (OS5) and iMac (Lion) along with the MacBook Pro (OS Version 10.6.8) since November until now.  Mail will no longer download on the MacBook Pro and keeps asking for my password.

    Mail should still be usable with your machine - but you'll need to update the settings to conform to the requirements of your system. Check with your ISP (like ATT, etc.) for the settings that will work with your Mail. Once you've updated this, you should be able to email like before.
    For example, my ISP required that I go to Mail Preferences/Accounts and make sure the details conform to your email settings.
    I have no idea of what your ISP is or what the settings might be, but this is likely the source of the problem.

  • VMware Fusion v4 on MacBook Pro 17 vs. MacBook Air

    Hello everybody,
    I have a problem with my early 2011 MacBook Pro 17'' when running VMware Fusion v4 Trial - both the VM as well as my MBP are running annoyingly slow when I start up a VM. Switching from the VM to a Mac app takes what seems an eternity. When setting up an OS in the VM, the Mac becomes almost unresponsive. This applies to VMs running Windows 7, Windows XP, Mac OS Lion.
    I just can't believe that the MBP is not powerful enough to operate on Lion OS while running a VM at the same time. I have experimented giving the VM 1,5GB RAM and 2GB RAM - doesn't make a difference.
    VWware slows my Mac down so much that both the Mac and the VM become unusable.
    Same thing happened when I installed the Parallels 7 Trial.
    I don't believe that the Mac has any hardware issue - it performs satisfyingly and is as fast as you'd expect from a current model, when not running any virtualization app.
    And here comes the real catch now: on my mid 2011 MacBook Air - which has a slightly slower CPU - VMware is blazingly fast and I can use Mac OS in parallel without hardly noticing that the VM is running.
    Yes, I am aware that because of the SSD the overall impression makes the MBA probably appear a lot snappier, but then again it has only 2 cores as opposed to the MBP's 4 cores. However, I had absolutely no issues running VMware Fusion v3 when I was still on Snow Leopard with my MBP17.
    So the machine can't be the problem, it was running fine before Lion with VM application, but the VM software is doing fine on a MBA, so the only two explanations left that I have are: the combination must be the problem (MBP17 + VM) or the MBP17 has some funny setting that I am not aware of which slows it down that much.
    Does anyone experience similar problems?
    Any solution for performance issues that anyone is aware of?
    Help greatly appreciated

    Thanks a lot! Tried what you suggested and it actually seemed to improve VMware Fusion v4 in the beginning but I soon ended up with an estimated 30% of the performance for both the VM and the Mac.
    Finally I tought - hey, the whole system (physical hardware and the VM) always becomes slow when there's acutal disk access... so I checked the disk in Disk Utility - and there it was: it needed repair. So I rebooted from an install disk and repaired my MacIntosh Hard Disk and there you go: MUCH better.
    Switched from VMware Fusion to Paralles in the end because VMware had issues with IE in the VM and seemed slower.
    Problem solved

  • How do I install windows 7 drivers correctly on my macbook pro retina?

    I've installed Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit) twice now, and each time I get on, none of the bootcamp drivers seem to be installed correctly.  This means I can't access the internet because a network adapter isn't present, and I can't play games because the NVIDIA drivers aren't there.  I've seen other people have had this problem in the past, but their fix was to download bootcamp 3.x from Apple's download site, but obviously that doesn't work now as the version is newer.
    Does anyone know how to correctly install Windows so this doesn't happen, or how to get the drivers installed correctly?
    Thank you very much for your time

    For 2 reasons, and they are about the hardware.
    1) Apple/Mac and BC restrict the way you use the computer. Maybe not for you but for me. It does not allow you to create any other parttitions for Windows to use. You can't even re-partition the BC partition into 2 drives. That will HOSE the Windows system and maybe the OS X part.
    2) Apple/Mac does not allow the use of all the hardware. You can not use both graphic cards. switch between them. Windows Must use the descrete graphics adapter which cause the system to run hotter. This is a limitation imposed by Apple as with Reall Windows PCs that have both the Interl embedded and add-on descrete graphics you can switch between them.
    Actually BC 4 has been out since Lion shipped on new Mac's. BC 4 also restricted the installation of Windows to just Win 7, no more XP. Which was what you could do with Snow Leopard and BC 3

  • I've been using VMWare Fusion for my Macbookbook Pro (OS Lion) and it froze the other day. It couldn't force quit any program so I needed to do a hard reset by pressing the power button. Now VMWare won't restart properly. How do I fix this?

    The Mac side works fine but now the VMWare won't even open windows. After restarting it did an automatic StartUp Repair but after another reboot, it was just a black screen.

    Have you rebooted the Mac. Give that a try.
    If that doesn't work you could reinstall Fusion but if Fusion opens and you can get to the Library windows of Fusion I think your VM OS is toast.
    I make a habbit of copying the VM to another internal, yes I have 2 internal drives in my MBP, and to an external drive. I do this about once a week. That way if the Mac screws something up I have a backup I can use to overwrite the one that does not work correctly.
    Good Luck. Hope you get it working.

  • VMWare Fusion on a MacBook Air?

    Does anyone know whether I will be able to use VMWare Fusion on a MacBook Air?
    I am already using it on a MacBook Pro with great success but when I mentioned that I was going to change to an Air I was told that it wasn't possible.

    It works just fine on the MBair.  I'm running 3.1.3 but version 4 is out and has the best compatibility with Lion.

    First, you can install Microsoft's Security Essentials in the Win 7 VM and keep it up-to-date. Second, you can turn off Sharing in Fusion's System Settings to keep the VM environment separate from your Mac. Third, you can look into Sophos Anti-Virus http://www.sophos.com/en-us/products/free-tools/sophos-antivirus-for-mac-home-ed ition/download.aspx for the Mac host.

  • Shut down issue on 27" iMac running Windows XP using VMWare Fusion 3

    I'm running Windows XP on a 27" iMac using VMWare Fusion 3. When I try to shut down the Mac system without using Windows, a dark (not black) screen covers the screen from top to bottom and presents me with a screen, stating in multiple languages that I must press the power button for 5 seconds and then restart the Mac. Then the iMac will close normally.
    However, if I run both the Mac system and Windows, and then close Windows, VMFWare Fusion 3, followed by the Mac system, the iMac shouts down normally.
    What's going on? Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone have a solution?

    I run XP under Fusion 3 and have not seen this issue. What you are getting is a Kernel Panic. There should be more information in your console logs about the reason.
    Here is some info on KPs to help you.

  • I use VMware Fusion, will it still work if I upgrade to Lion

    I use VMware Fusion to use Quicken in Windows.  Just want to be sure before doing the upgrade to Lion that it will still work?  Thanks in advance.

    You have to check with VMFusion, but my advice is to wait a few more months so the bugs are completely worked out if your very dependent upon things working.
    I run Fusion myself.

  • How do I activate a used iPhone 3 with no SIM card for use as an ipod touch?

    How do I activate a used iPhone 3G with no SIM card for use like an iPod Touch? It was apparently on AT&T previously and I have another iPhone 3 that is active on AT&T if that is helpful. Thanks!

    Copied from the link provided.
    Follow these steps to use your iPhone without a wireless service plan:
    Insert the SIM card from your new, activated iPhone or one that was previously used to activate the original iPhone.
    Connect the iPhone to iTunes on a computer connected to the Internet.
    Once iTunes activates the device, you're free to use the iPhone as if it were an iPod touch.

  • How do I install windows using BootCamp without cd drive fot the new MBP?

    I need some softwares for my work (modelsim, altera, ltspices etc) but some of them only supports windows.
    New MBP doesnt seem to have a cd driver.
    How do I install windows using bootcamp without cd drivers?

    You can use a USB thumbdrive to do this, assuming you have access to a windows machine to format the usb stick.
    I installed Win7 on my MB Air (2011), which of course lacks a DVD drive altogether, using this technique.
    Basically, you download a tool called rEFIt to your macbook. ( http://sourceforge.net/projects/refit/files/rEFIt/0.14/rEFIt-0.14.dmg/download ) When this is installed, it gives you a boot selector menu when you boot the Macbook ('Do you want to boot to MacOS or to the USB drive?')
    Then you download and run an Apple tool called Boot Camp Assistant, which allows you to partition your HD for the two operating systems to share; it also pulls down all the windows drivers you need.
    Then prep the USB thumbdrive on a windows machine to be a Win7 installer disk. You'll want a drive in the 4gb+ range I think. You have to set up the thumbdrive to be bootable (lots of tools for that available), and then copy all the windows installation files over to it.
    Put the thumbdrive in the macbook and boot holding down the option key.
    Choose the rEFIt icon on boot, then choose to boot from the thumbdrive, then format your new windows partition to something Win7 can handle, and install windows.
    On my machine I followed a slightly more involved process and wiped out MacOS entirely. I would have kept it on a small partition if I'd had a bigger hard drive.

    Hi Faizan,
    Please note you can also use the cmd "slmgr" in Windows Powershell.
    If you want to activate Windows via powershell script, please check the WMI class SoftwareLicensingService.
    The script below can install the appropriate KMS client key for the detected OS:
    $OSversion = (Get-WmiObject -class Win32_OperatingSystem).Caption
    switch -Regex ($OSversion) {
    'Windows 8.1 Professional N' {$key = 'HMCNV-VVBFX-7HMBH-CTY9B-B4FXY';break}
    'Windows 8.1 Professional' {$key = 'GCRJD-8NW9H-F2CDX-CCM8D-9D6T9';break}
    'Windows 8.1 Enterprise N' {$key = 'TT4HM-HN7YT-62K67-RGRQJ-JFFXW';break}
    'Windows 8.1 Enterprise' {$key = 'MHF9N-XY6XB-WVXMC-BTDCT-MKKG7';break}
    'Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard' {$key = 'D2N9P-3P6X9-2R39C-7RTCD-MDVJX';break}
    'Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter' {$key = 'W3GGN-FT8W3-Y4M27-J84CP-Q3VJ9';break}
    $KMSservice = Get-WMIObject -query "select * from SoftwareLicensingService"
    Write-Debug 'Activating Windows.'
    $null = $KMSservice.InstallProductKey($key)
    $null = $KMSservice.RefreshLicenseStatus()
