  • HT1222 How do I update my first generation iPad without the software update button in the general settings menu?

When I go to my app store the store will load but nothing within the store will load. I haven't updated my Ipad in a long time because the computer died I would use. I have tried different things but can not find a way to update to the new operating systems which is what I believe is causing my problems in the app store.

The Settings > General > Software Update option only appears when you have iOS 5+ installed, if you have iOS 4 then you will need to do the update via your computer's iTunes.
Connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Transfer Purchases. You may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'.
Then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button

A first gen iPad should update to iOS 5.1.1 (which is the only version that is 'signed' by Apple).

  • How to sync purchased music from an iPhone without SIM card?

    Hello,
I have an iPhone 3GS, which I used, till I got a new iPhone 4.
Meanwhile it was working for my girlfriend as "iPodtouch". Yesterday I was able to have my cellular network provider to remove the sim lock, so that the iPhone 3GS is now again able to be used as cell phone.
Meanwhile my girlfriend purchased music at iTunes. I want to sync the iPhone 3GS to iTunes, but it always say "no sim card installed" The only way wold be to go thru the lock free procedure to sync, but that will delete all content on that phone. (including the purchased music)
    My question now is:
How can I sync an iPhone 3GS to iTunes, without the SIM card installed?
    Thank you for your trouble.
    Henning

    Open itunes.
    Connect iphone.
Look at the top of your computer screen for the word "File" .  Click it.
    Then click "Transfer Purchases"

  • Forgot the password to my first generation iphone, how to unlock it now please help

I forgot my first generation iphone password, my iphone gives me this message "iphone is disabled and connect to iunes" when I connect to itunes get another message please enter your password.  Please help if anyone had this problem before

If you restore the phone from backup on the LAST computer the phone synced with, this will remove the passcode. If you do not have access to the last computer the phone synced with, you will have to force the phone into recovery mode & restore it as a new device to remove the passcode:
Turn the phone off using the Sleep/Wake button, then the slide to power off. If you are unable to do that, press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When your phone turns off, release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons. Then, leave the USB cable connected to your computer, but NOT your phone, iTunes running, press & hold the home button while connecting the USB cable to your dock connector, continue holding the home button until you see “Connect to iTunes” on the screen. You may now release the home button. iTunes should now display that it has detected your phone in recovery mode, if not quit and reopen iTunes. If you still don’t see the recovery message repeat these steps again. iTunes will give you the option to restore from a backup or set up as new. In your case, you will only be able to restore as a new device.

  • What to do with an unused first generation iPhone

I've got a brand new first generation iPhone.
I have no desire to use it as a phone.  I'd like to use it as nothing more than an mp3 player and wifi stuff in the coffee shops.
I've googled how to do it, but I came up with all kinds of complex stuff that I don't understand.  One article says it involves doing unauthorized stuff to the phone (gave way too complex instructions for unlocking the thing) ... another more recent article says that Apple is not objecting to people using old iPhones simply as iPods.
But nowhere have I found a tutorial that will get me up to speed ... something written to a techno-simpleton like me, with no real understanding of iPhones or computer terminology.
Can anyone point me to a very simple tutorial on how to convert a first generation iPhone ... probably one of the first ever made ... into a non-phone media player and wifi surfer?
And is Apple in fact okay with this?
    -JOHN

The iphone is designed to only be used once it has been activated with a carrier.
Once it has been activated, then it can be used without a wireless plan.

I'm wondering if any of you know how to help me out with this issue...
I have a first generation iPhone 16GB and I recently upgraded to 3.1 software, but my sim card is not supported - so I need to downgrade. By the way, my sim card isn't supported on 3.0 either, so I need to downgrade it to the original. I've been browsing the web all day trying to find a solution and nothing yet. If you can help, I'd appreciated it GREATLY!

  • Reactivating first generation iPhone?

So I currently have a 3GS (had it since it first came out) so I know, it's time to buy a new one. But because I just can't afford it I've just kept using it, which was never a problem. That is, until I made the terrible decision to download iOS 5 on it. Now I can't receive any incoming texts, which is a huge problem. I still have my first generation iPhone so I thought maybe I could reactivate it just until I can afford to get a new phone in a couple of weeks. But whenever I try to activate it (after putting my current SIM card into it) the activation process never fully works. I was wondering if it's just not really possible to reactive a first generation iPhone or if something's just going wrong? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

    I'm talking about your 3GS.
If you didn't lose "everything" by installing iOS 5 on your 3GS, you won't lose "everything" when restoring the 3GS with iTunes.
Where you do get you will lose everything on your iPhone when restoring it with iTunes?
All iTunes content on your iPhone - all music, movies, tv shows, podcasts, ringtones, audio and print books, and 3rd party apps should be in your iTunes library on your computer. All photos on your iPhone that were transferred from your computer should remain on your computer. Photos and videos in your iPhone's Camera Roll can and should be imported by your computer as with any other digital camera. Contacts, calendar events, and Safari bookmarks are designed to be synced with a supported app on your computer so all this data should be available on your computer as well. This leaves data such as iPHone settings, SMS/MMS, and 3rd party app settings and data created and stored by a 3rd party app which is included with your iPhone's backup.
If you switch to your original iPhone, you won't have all the data that is on your iPhone 3GS available on the original iPhone anyway.

  • First Generation iPhone - can't seem to activate Bluetooth functionality

I upgraded my first generation iPhone with V2.0 software, unfortunately I can't turn on Bluetooth functionality at all - can't even get to the point of trying to pair with a Motorola headset.
I go to Settings>General>Bluetooth and move the switch from off to on. The little gray gear symbol just turns until the phone switches off automatically (about 2 minutes).
Is this a problem with the new software?
    Thanks,
    Gail

Gail... I had this same problem back in January 2008 with the first update of the year, I have a bluetooth adapter in my stereo system in my truck so I can have hands free calling that come out over the stereo system. I installed this adaptor in the beginning of Dec 2007 worked beautiful till the Jan. update. After the update everytime I got in the truck and turned the stereo on it would pair then freeze the iphone, sometimes it would completly shut it down, I was mad!!! After about a week of this I just disabled the bluetooth. After the March 2008 update all was back to normal, bluetooth worked beautifully again! I have not had any problems since then. I have not updated to 2.0 and after reading all the forums today I am gonna hold off for a while. You probably just need to wait till the next update, unfortunatly. Hope this helps!

Hi guys, recently had the same issue. You require an older version of Airport Utility to configure the older Airport Express. It can be found here.

  • First Generation iphone static from receiver

My first generation iPhone has static coming from the receiver. When I am on the phone the other person does not hear it. The distortion made by receiver is very annoying. The static last for about 10 seconds. It started happening last week. I have the latest update. I did the restore twice. I am headed to the apple store tomorrow. I only got 25 days left on the warranty. I wanted to know if this was a common problem.

The phone was purchased off eBay, and it was unused brand new when it was purchased...and it was unlocked.
What part of the the iphone 2G was never sold anywhere in the world officially unlocked, other than France, do you not understand? Fact is, your phone was "hacked" to unlock it, which is common with iphones purchased on ebay. There are posts daily here just like yours. There is no way to officially unlock your phone, as AT&T does not offer unlocking and they would be the only ones who could unlock yours. As already stated: ANY ATTEMPT to update software or restore a "hacked" iphone will re-lock it to the carrier it was originally locked to. You have three choices: 1. Sell it and buy a phone you can use, 2. Take it back to the US & activate it on the AT&T network(very expensive to use where you live if you do that), or 3. Enjoy it as a paperweight.

    macbook air
The only theoretical solution is an USB ExpressCard adapter and FireWire ExpressCard. I don't know if anyone's actually attempted it.
    macbook pro
A FireWire 400 to 800 cable or adapter, also known as 6 pin to 9 pin.

  • First generation iphone vs iphone 3g

between these iphones, is there any difference in sim card compatibility.
i ask this question because someone told me that iphone 3g can't be used in Myanmar, though one of my friend is using first generation iphone now here in Myanmar.
sim card in Myanmar is 2G. ( can do SMS message but not internet access )
any expert who know this problem, pls help me.

The sim card that comes with the v1 & v2 iPhone is a 3G sim card. What your friend did was unlock the phone to use a local sim where he lives. This voids the warranty on the phone and can possibly cause permanent damage. IF you were able to do this with the 3G model, unless it was compatible with a local 3G network - if you have one, you would only have access through the Edge service or GPRS that you have access to locally.

  • First generation iPhone wallpaper

Is there any way I can transfer wallpaper photos from a first generation iPhone to an iPhone 3gs running OS 4
    Thank you in advance
    dave

You can't transfer the wallpaper photos included with the firmware/OS, but you can transfer photos from your computer to your 3GS that were transferred from your computer to your original or first generation iPhone.

How do I control a first generation airport express with 10.8.2?
I have an old airport express that one of my machines running mountain lion will not support.  If I upgrade all of my systems to mountain lion, is there any way I can still control and configure the airport express?

You may need Airport Utility v. 5.6

It does work with Mountain Lion.

  • How to: Force-sync a first generation Apple TV with iTunes 12

For anyone else out there who's still using a first generation Apple TV and iTunes 12 and realized there's no longer an option to "force" the device to sync, I have a work around.
    Background
With my first generation Apple TV, I "manually" manage the content stored on the device. As well, I don't add content movie-by-movie (song-by-song, etc.). Instead, I have three playlists (Movies, TV Shows, and Music) that I then sync to the Apple TV. The problem is, even pre-iTunes 12, modifying the content of a playlist didn't trigger iTunes to offer to "sync" the device (I don't think it was smart enough to deal with the EOL first generation Apple TV in terms of playlist content changes). But, at least with pre-iTunes 12, you were able to right-click on the device in the sidebar and this would bring up a contextual message with "Sync" as one of the options. So, even though the "Sync" option was greyed-out in the main iTunes window, you could still initiate the sync via the contextual menu (thus "force syncing" the device with iTunes). But, with iTunes 12, this contextual menu has been removed (right clicking does nothing) and thus the ability to "force sync" is gone.
    Solution
After trying many different options to get the first generation Apple TV to sync with iTunes (after updating the content of a synced playlist), this is the only solution I've come up with that works:
    1. Create a playlist called "ATV Force Sync".
    2. Put a single movie in the playlist (I used a short, 10 second video, but I'm sure you could also use a song or any other media—just use something that is short and you don't care if it's on or off the device).
    3. To "force sync" the Apple TV, iTunes > Apple TV > Settings > Movies > Sync Playlist, check the checkbox beside the "ATV Force Sync" playlist. This will then enable the Sync"button and you can now force the Apple TV to sync with iTunes (it'll sync the "ATV Force Sync" playlist, but also sync any changes to any other playlist the Apple TV is set to sync with). Then, the next time you want to force sync (i.e., if you've updated the content in a playlist you want to sync), just uncheck the checkbox beside the "ATV Force Sync" playlist, and the Sync button will be enabled again (and so on, enabling/disabling the "ATV Force Sync" every time you want to force-sync the device).
Anyway, it's not an ideal solution, but at least it works. I've filed a bug report with Apple, but let's be honest, I don't think supporting the first generation Apple TV is on their "to do" list anymore. <G>
Hope this helps someone else out there!
    Kristin.

Hi minjak—I'll see if I can help?
Has the Apple TV ever been connected to iTunes at all (on that, or another computer)? From the sounds of it, the ATV has already been "paired" with an iTunes library, thus it's not (and won't) show up in your current version of iTunes.
So, here's what I'd suggest. On your Apple TV, do the following…
Go to Settings > Computers > Select iTunes Library (or something like that—I don't remember 100% what the option is called as I don't have the screen in front of me right now) and select "Disconnect".
This should remove and "synced" or "paired" computer (iTunes) from your ATV.
Then, re-sync it back up to your version of iTunes. You have to do something like this…
On your ATV, go to Settings > Computers > Connect to iTunes and a passcode should display on your screen. Then, go to iTunes, and the ATV should appear (give it about 15-20 seconds). If it does, select it and enter the passcode showing on the ATV. This should re-sync the ATV to your copy of iTunes.
Make sure both the computer and Apple TV are on the same internal network. And if possible, connect the Apple TV to the network via ethernet (rather than WiFi). Again, make sure the Apple TV is "online" and connected to the same network at the computer running iTunes.
If all works, you should see the Apple TV appear in iTunes, something like this (i.e., there's now a small Apple TV icon at the right end of the row of icons along the top)…
Anyway, have a go at the instructions above and let me know what happens, and we can go from there!
    Thanks,
    Kristin.
