How do i add a device to a itunes account we already have?

My son rec a used iphone 4 for xmas. We created an apple id for him however i do not believe we ever downloade/backed up to an itunes account yet. He somehow tried to update his phone now it is stuck saying it needs to doa reovery. He cant use it. I pulgged it into our computer and my other sons itunes opened up and tried to recover but of course nothing is there. Are you able to just add a device to the same itunes account or do I need to create an entire new one for this phone? and if new will he be able to share music with my other sons account?

You would just need to sign into your Apple ID through Settings > iTunes & App Store to associate your device to your Apple ID. This will give you access to all your previous purchases made with your Apple ID. You may be asked to answer your security questions as an authentication method on new purchases with the device.

If you enabled Find my iPhone then you should use that. If not, I'm afraid you're out of luck for finding it.
To manage your devices, go to Your Account in iTunes.

To remove a device or computer from your Apple ID:
Open iTunes.
Sign in to your Apple ID by choosing Store > Sign In from the iTunes menu.
Choose Store > View My Account from the iTunes menu.
From the Account Information screen, click Manage Devices.
Click the Remove button next to the device name you would like to unassociate.
Note: Removing a device from your Apple ID does not override the 90-day timer. You must wait 90 days from the day the device was first associated with your Apple ID before it can be associated with another Apple ID.

Just sign into your own ID in Settings>iTunes & App Store. Sign out of the old ID and sign into your ID. I get the feeling though, that there is more to what you are trying to do or want to do and I'm not understanding or you are not explaining completely.
If this is a previously owned iPad, it should have been erased before you got possession of it.
