Ok.. I am still confused as an Express only has one ethernet for LAN not 4. So you perhaps have an extreme..
If you have an airport extreme.. plug the TC into the extreme with ethernet.. and set it up as bridge in router.
You can also create a wireless network that works alongside the extreme.. this is the best way.
It is also possible to setup the TC to extend the wireless of the extreme.. but this will make backups much slower.. at least half the speed if not worse.

We have a modem/router (motorola) provided by isp to connect to internet. Most devices connect to this wirelessly. We just purchased an Airport + Time Capsule to create a subnetwork (add to existing network via ethernet cable), so that only a few devices can wirelessly connect to Airport + Time capsule to store time machine back up and to wirelessly print to one printer connected by usb to Time Capsule. When I select "I want to add to existing network" the motorola only shows up as a wireless, can't see the wired option. I tested that the ethernet cable works and connected to one port on motorola and WAN on Time Capsule. How do I tell Airport + Time Capsule to connect to motorola modem/router via the ethernet cable? I think I want it to connect via cable because I don't want the Airport to replace the existing router, rather I want to end up with two routers (one for entire network, and second one just for subnetwork).

Ok, your question confused me with the airport and TC as if it is two things not one.
when I connect the ethernet cable to TC, why doesn't modem/router show up in connect to list? Or if wrong list, where should I look, to select, to get it to "see" what it is connected to by ethernet?
Are you using v6 in Lion utility? I am using SL with 5.5 utility. There is no such place that I can find. (You will do better downloading and using v5.6 for Lion anyway).
On the manual setup.. summary page it will show the IP you get on the WAN port. From default settings this will all work properly.. there is nothing you need to do.
Plug ethernet from modem router to TC wan port. When you do the TC will get an IP.
If you open the internet tab, you can see Connect using.. ethernet. Just leave that. and everything else on auto.
For connection sharing, you still need to share a public IP.. although TC will complain you are not using public but private IP.. there is nothing you can do about that. Just set the TC to ignore the error double NAT.
When I began installation, I plugged everything in, then plugged in power. I opened Airport Utility, and followed on-screen instructions, but when selecting "connect to existing network with ethernet cable" my modem/router doesn't appear in the list.
Do not use connect to existing network.. that will bridge the TC which you don't want.
You have to use the existing network as if it is public network. And stuff behind your TC is private.
If I set the TC to bridge mode, won't it "take over" all router activity, and the first group of computers won't be able to connect directly to motorola? (I don't want this first group of computers to be able to connect to the TC).

If you set the TC to bridge it will not route at all... it will become a client of the existing network. And all IP addresses will be taken from the Motorola.. you will have one flat network, which is what usually people want.
If you are still struggling.. do this.
1. Tell me the IP address the existing Motorola is passing to the clients. Your one big issues here is making sure they are in fact on two different subnets.
2. As long as condition of 1 is fulfulled this will work at default setting. Reset the TC by holding down the reset for 10sec.
Plug Lan motorola to WAN TC.
Plug a computer into the TC to do setup.
Set up as if you have public IP on wan. Tell TC to ignore double NAT.
Set wireless and TC names as you want.
Now test internet.. on a client computer on the TC. it should work fine. At least for everything that doesn't need interactive connection.
3. You can improve things by using DMZ in the Motorola to the TC. That alleviates at least some of the issues that arise with double NAT.

The Time Capsule can be installed virtually anywhere you want at your house if you connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on your basement router to the WAN "O" port of the Time Capsule.
Then configure the Time Capsule to create a wireless network using the same wireless network name, same security settings and same password as the basement router.
Finally, as the last step, make sure that the Time Capsule has been configured to operate in Bridge Mode to allow it to function correctly on the network.

There is a device password that will be required of any user who wants to access the Time Capsule disk. If the Time Capsule is also configured to provide a wireless network, users will need to enter the wireless network password to be able to connect to the network.

In this case, the Time Capsue would be configured to operate in Bridge Mode. It functions as another Ethernet switch in that type of setup. Speed should not be affected.

No. In order to partition the Time Capsule drive, it would need to be removed from the Time Capsule case, placed in a separate caddy or enclosure and then connected directly to your Mac to allow Disk Utility access to the disk for the partition procedure. Then, you would have to reinstall the Time Capsule drive back in the Time Capsule case.
In addition to a lot of work, this will void the warranty on the product.
Can iOS access the files or back up to the Time Capsule?
iOS devices back up to iTunes on your computer. Then, when a Mac backs up to the Time Capsule using Time Machine, all of the data is backed up. In other words, iOS devices cannot back up directly to the Time Capsule drive using Time Machine.
Using an App like Filebrowser, it is possible to have the iOS device browse the contents of the Time Capsule drive, but the iOS device will not be able to open files that have been backed up using Time Machine.
The iOS device will likely open most other normal files stored on the Time Capsule drive if the proper App is installed on the iOS device.

Should I create a new Wi Fi network or add Time Capsule to existing Wi FI network

I decided to buy a 3 TB Time Capsule rather than have a bunch of USB drives connected to my iMac (2010 3.2 GHz i3 running ML). I’ve noticed that when I have 3 USB drives connected, one always fails to mount.
I have a Netgear CG3100 Cable Modem on Telstra’s network.
The TC (located in a entertainment unit downstairs) connects to the Cable Modem via Ethernet (located upstairs).
Under ‘AirPort Utility’ Network menu, the Router Mode is: Off (Bridge Mode). This creates two Wi Fi networks (Netgear creates a Wireless-N network plus the TC network). I’m running AirPort Utility version 7.6.3.
Is this environment the ideal setup – Bridge Mode? Running ‘Speedtest.Net’ via my iPhone, both Wi Fi networks offered up to 30 Mbps. Although, I’ve noticed TM on some occasions to be significantly slower (maybe due Time Machine syncing via Ethernet???).
The following devices attach to the Network;
via Ethernet to Cable Modem, iMac, Ethernet Switch (for TV, Apple TV and Amp), TC (running off ports are TV, Apple TV and Amp) and,
via Wi Fi; iPads, iPhones, MacBook Pro and Windows laptop.
Network is used for all the usual stuff including Apple TV, Skype and VPN.
Ideally I don’t want to have to switch between the two Wi Fi networks. As the Cable Modem and TC are in different locations, one would expect the performance would vary depend on your proximity to each device. Ideally, you’d won’t to connect to the device with the best signal.
I’d appreciate any guidance on the best configuration for this environment.

I didn't roll back 5.6 but was able to get things working with Airport Utility7.6.3. I believe the problem may have been one of two things. The Wireless Settings for the Netgear CG310 had the following Security Option selected: WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES].
So I selected just WPA2-PSK [AES] which matched the AirPort Utility Wireless Security option.
That appeared to fix the iMac. The MacBook Pro (MBP) still didn’t play ball. From the Network Preferences menu, I selected ‘Assist me’…re configured the wireless on the MBP. Followed the ‘Diagnostics…’ option ‘Choose network port configuration’ selecting WiFi…and that solved whatever voodoo was preventing the MBP from connecting to the WiFi network.
The 5GHz achieved a download speed of +60Mbps (speedtest.net), so I’m pretty happy with that!
The following images are now my setup so that my DSL/Cable Modem and TC have the same:
SSID
Security WPA2-PSK[AES]
Password
The TC Network Mode is 'Create a wireless networl'
The DSL/Cable Model is set to channel 1 and the TC is set to 11 for 2.4GHz and 36 fro 5GHz.

I've recently installed a 3TB timecapsule, replacing a 1TB TC (3rd gen).
But as the 1TB TC has a 1 TB hard-disk, I'd like to add the 1TB TC to my network so I can use the the 1TB storage.
Is this possible, and if yes how should I do this?

Connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <--> ports on your 3 TB Time Capsule to one of the LAN <--> ports on the old Time Capsule.
Now, when you open a Finder window, you will see two Time Capsules under the SHARED heading on the left side of the window.

Want to add Time Capsule to existing AEBS wireless network

I currently have a wireless network with Airport Extreme as the base. I have a Time Capsule that someone didn't want anymore and would like to use that ONLY for backup of my IMac (Using Time Machine). Is there a way to only use the hard drive part of Time Capsule without having it be used to create a wireless network?

Yes, you have a couple of options here.
1) Configure the TC to "join" the wireless network that the AirPort Extreme is providing. Backups will be over wireless only. The ethernet ports are not enabled in this type of setup, so you would not be able to use ethernet to backup.
2) Turn off the wireless on the TC and connect it to the AirPort Extreme using an ethernet cable. This would be the recommended way to set this up because you would have the option to backup using either ethernet or wireless.

Configuring Time capsule to existing network

Existing network consists of Cisco DPC3825 modem (shaw network with a static IP (this is a home based office)) and a Cisco Linksys EA3500 router. I need to keep the existing router as i have several custom routing tables for VOIP and SIP related connectivity to my Zultys Phone System. I need to find a configuration that will allow me to use the time capsule for backups for my Mac OS (latest release with a new Macbook Pro) and have my 3TB external drive accessable for the WIndows Partiton and other PC's on network.
I tried just plugging the Capsule into the network, but it would never clear the flashing amber 'problem' indicator.
Suggestions please.

This is pretty simple.. setup the TC in bridge mode before you plug it into the network..
Decide how you will run wireless.. you can turn it off and just use the existing wireless or you can setup the TC to have a separate network.. but as the router is bridged it will function merely as a different AP to the same network.
Bridge is under network in the v6 utility.. change from nat+dhcp to off, bridge mode.

I will be replacing an old Time Capsule with a new (current gen).

It really helps to start over. So my response is always factory reset.
But it does depend on how the Extremes are being used.. As roaming network with ethernet back to whatever is the main router,, it is less of an issue.. if they are extending wireless it is a very big issue.

How to connect a time capsule to another network

I have recently moved to an area that has no landline system, all ISP's are provided through a wireless router. How should I connect the timecapsule into such a network?

Unfortunately, the Time Capsule was not designed for this type of operation.
Ask the network administrator if they can provide you with, or recommend a wireless to Ethernet bridge, so that the Time Capsule can receive the Ethernet signal that it wants.
It might be possible to configure the Time Capsule to "join" the wireless network in Bridge Mode.......but, even if that might be possible, the big downside here is that you would be setting up what is known as a "double hop" wireless situation with the Time Capsule.

New Time Capsule on Existing Network

I just got a 1TB Time Capsule that I've connected to an existing Network on an Airport Extreme. My existing Time Machine backups are on a LaCie Firewire external drive. Is there a way to get my existing backups from the Firewire drive to the new Time Capsule, then continue to do incremental backups? Or do I have to start over with Time Capsule, and save old backups on the LaCie? When I try to drag the backup file to the Time Capsule in Finder, I get an error message.

Pb to associate time capsule to existing network

Hello just bought a Time Capsule and tried to configure it by connecting it to existing network (freebox revolution v6).
Final aim is to use it as a wifi drive not connected to the freebox by ethernet.
I tried it several times : each time it failed. I even tried to change WEP codes to WPA, password length etc ... Failed.
If i configure it by creating a new network ok it works, but i want to use it not linked by ethernet to the box.
Don't know what to do, and start to regret this expense.

The Time Capsule is not designed to connect wirelessly, unless you are connecting it to another Apple router.
Even then, this is not recommended since backups will take twice as long as normal this way, due to a "double hop" that the signal must make during the backup process.
Backups will be much faster and more reliable if you connect the Time Capsule using an Ethernet connection.

Time capsule on existing network

I have a go flex home on my network. Recently switched to mac (June 2011) and have been using my goflex to store my time machine backup. I went on vacation to come back to time machine not recognizing my goflex and my backups magically were deleted. Anyway, will Time capsule work with on an existing network. I'd hate to get rid of my router when there is nothing wrong with it. Thanks.

Adding another router to my Time Capsule's existing network.

Here's the situation: I live in a tri-level house with my TC on the 1st floor. My room, on the top floor, has bad reception (in certain spots, full bar, in others, half to no bars at all). Until I can afford to get an Airport Express to extend the wireless N reception, I thought I'd use my old Netgear router that has wirelss G with MIMO. The problem that I'm having now is that I don't know how to (or if I can) set up the Netgear router to extend the range of my TC's network (even though I know I'm sacrificing the speed of the connection by doing this). So, for you networking geniuses out there, is there any way I can do this? Also, while I'm asking questions here, why is my connection so hit or miss in my room?

Not quite. "Dual-mode," in this case, means running separate 802.11n only and 802.11b/g networks. 802.11b/g clients would NOT be able to access the 802.11n only network.
And second, with the "roaming" network, do I have to have my Netgear already hooked up to my Time Capsule via ethernet or are you suggesting that I go through set up with the ethernet connection and then I can place the Netgear in my room with the network expanded (with the b/g connection)?
In a "roaming" network each of the routers would need to be connected to an Ethernet backbone. So if your house is already wired for Ethernet this would be ideal. So in my suggestion, both the TC and the Netgear would have to be connected by Ethernet, either directly to each other or both connected to an Ethernet circuit on the same subnet.
