If you have MobileMe and share your calendar with iDevices and/or other Macs, change Location from On My Mac to Calendars. (If this doesn't work, make sure that Calendar sharing is checked on the MobileMe preference pane.)
Change Auto-refresh to Every week. This will make sure that you have holidays on your calendar for the years ahead.

Hi. Actually you can connect your iPad to the iTunes without erasing the contents which purchased from iTunes Store. I suggest to import your photos taken by iPad to iMac the first time: Import photos and videos from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your Mac or Windows PC - Apple Support.
Also you can click to stop syncing to avoid losing some contents.

A tip: if you download and add a calendar, make sure you add it as a new calendar. Do not import it into an existing calendar, because you won't be able to unpick it later.

How do I add events to my calendar on iPad mini

The + sign on my calendar is greyed out so I can't add an event. I've tried asking Siri to add an event but when I get to the end and press confirm he says he can't do this but can't tell me why. Has anyone else had this problem and how did you resolve it? I have the iPad mini

If you're not able to add events to Calendar, try these troubleshooting steps first:
If you're using iOS 7, quit and restart the Calendar app:
Press the Home button twice to see preview screens of the apps you have open.
Find the Calendar preview screen and swipe it up and out of preview to quit the application.
Tap the Home button to return to your Home screen.
Wait a minute before reopening the Calendar app.
Restart your iOS device: Hold down the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears, then drag the slider. After the device turns off, turn it back on by pressing the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.

CTRL- or RIGHT-click in the sidebar and select New. If the sidebar isn't visible, then click on the Calendar button at the top of the window.
Never underestimate the value of clicking on the Help menu.
