How do I archive 60 gig of photos to DVD for offsite backup?

I have about 60 gigs of photo I'd like to back up for offsite storage. What's the best way to do it?  I'm thinking DVDs, but wonder about comoression options.

Best way? A Hard Disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). It's faster, way more convenient and much easir to keep updted. More reliable too.
FWIW: My Library lives on my iMac. It’s Backed up to  two external hard disks every day. These disks are permanently attached to the iMac. These back ups run automatically. One is done by Time Machine, one is a bootable back up done by SuperDuper
It’s also backed up to a portable hard disk when ever new photos are added. This hard disk lives in my car. For security, this disk is password protected.
I have a second off-site back up at a relative’s house across town. That’s updated every 3 or 4 months.
My Photos are backed up online. There are many options: Flickr, Picasa, SmugMug etc. However, check the terms of your account carefully. While most sites have free uploading, you will often find that these uploads are limited in terms of the file size or the bandwidth you can use per month. For access that allows you to upload full size pics with no restrictions you may need to pay.
Every couple of months I test the back ups to make sure they are working correctly. It’s very easy to mis-configure a back up application, and the only way to protect against that is to do a trial restore.
Backing up to DVD presents no compression options.

  • How do people backup iPhoto library for offsite backup?

I use time machine for a local backup and I also copy the iPhoto library to another external USB HDD for extra backup.
So I know you should also have a backup offsite in case of disaster. So how do people do this? What methods, cloud? External HDD? DVDs? Etc and where do you keep it?
What I'm thinking is as the iPhoto library can become very large 100's of Gb it's not easy to backup to say the cloud or to DVDs (is this possible at all?), how do I do this?
Also once copied to say another external USB HDD, every week it changes so do I have to do a full copy of the library again everytime?
    Cheers

  • How to restrict disk space when using time machine for client backup on server?

We have 10 OS X SL Clients backing up on xserve SL with TM. Now 1 TB disk space is used and disk is full. The clients get the massage that the latest backup could not be finished due to target disk full. Clients run just OS X Standard Software plus Parallels with windows (max. 50 GB per client)
Why does TM not delete oldest backups like with external USB HD?
How can we restrict disk space on server to eg. 750 GB for total backup space for all clients?

johndave, did anyone ever respond to your post?

  • I want to export ~100 JPEG photos to  DVD for the grandchildren to use/download etc

I want to export ~100 JPEG photos like a slideshow (but without transitions, fading etc) to  DVD for the grandchildren to use/download etc

The absolutely FIRST thing you have to do is contact your clients webmaster and get the required specs:  frame size, bitrate.
Then you can either export directly out of FCP or take a file into compressor and make it there.

  • How can I archive 5,000+ photos in iPhoto

i have managed to accumulate over 5,000 photos in iPhoto and i think they are slowing down my mac mini. they slow down opening iPhoto.
is there a way to archive them so i can access them if i want but don't have to have them all show up in iPhoto?
i have an external hard drive and am tempted to move them onto that although i don't know how i would get time machine to stop overriding them.

    Jane,
The size of your library doesn't sound like it would be a problem, but to try to give you a suggestion to the premise of your question...
This probably won't help you on your immediate issue, but you may want to consider occasionally closing a library and starting a new one. This keeps the size manageable and easy to backup to a dvd size disc.
Of course it depends on each user and how and what they are doing, but for example, I shoot my son's rugby team each year. Each year I start a new iphoto library (ie: rugby09, rugby10, etc), separating last year from this year, etc.
This gets the old picts off your computer as you are finished with them.
Only rugby pictures go into these libraries. I have other separate libraries for other topics (grand-daughter, race cars, etc).
I can justify my method since I don't ever run into a project where I would need to be working with rugby, grand-daughter, and car picts at the same time.
This method may not work for you or everybody, but it works for me and allows me to keep topics/libraries to a manageable size and easily backed up. It's not perfect, but it works for now.
Of course with today's larger MP cameras, images and libraries are forever growing larger and larger, so even using my method, a dvd is very much out dated in regards to it's capacity. Hopefully BluRay burners will become mainstream soon and allow daily backups of 25GBs of data per disc.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You cannot selectively restore data from a backup, it's all or nothing.

  • How to install the add-on Photo Upload Dropbox for CC products, like Lightroom?

I have bought the add-on from Adobe to use it in Lightroom. My CC app says it is installed, but I can't find it in any of my CC apps (Lightroom, PhotoShop etc).

When you purchase an Add-on, the web page for the add-on has a tab that tells you where to find it and how to install it.
Go back to the page where you ordered it and look for the Where to Find It tab, shown below:
For further questions, it would be best to ask in the Lightroom forum.

  • How to retire/archive/status a released workbench transport for an OSS note

My Question:  Is there a best practice for the "retiring" or "archiving" or "statusing" of released workbench transports for OSS notes that have been imported into the quality environment, but should never be imported into the production environment?
For example an OSS note is applied and imported into QS1, but then a CRT Hotpack is applied as an entire patch upgrade, so that the prior individual transport is no longer needed.  Best Business practice indicates to not delete a released transport, but unless there is a way to permanently segregate them from the remaining legitimately viable transports, there is always a risk that the "stale" code could inadvertently slip through thus overwriting good code.

    Hello.
Well, you have confirmed what I suspected when I read the descriptions - wrong forum.
I chuckled and couldn't stop a broad smile from creeping across my face when I read your response though:  "the old BASIS type questions".  I knew we were a bit behind the times here; you have definitely confirmed this suspicion.
Thank you again.  I'll try another search of the OSS notes or put in a customer message just for the heck of it.

  • Need advise how to demux archived footages from back up DVDs...

    Dear All:
We used to archieve all our DVCAM footages into DVDs, however, by doing so, we creat a problem which we not expect to encounter sometimes down the road...
Every once in a while, we need to reprocess old footages, may be adding new captions, dubbing second language over the original soundtracks etc., We need to find a reliable workflow to tackle this perticular issue, is there any decent, reliable mux-demux softwares out there? In addition, is there any signal downgrade by using such demux process?
By the way, We are using Final Cut Pro 5, iMovie 5, iDVD 5, DVD Studio Pro in our workshop...
    Thanks in advance!!
    Kevin

    Kevin--
Change your workflow as quickly as possible...Putting footage on dvd is a terrible way to archive if you are going to have to use that footage again.(Your current situation.)
You probably won't take much of a hit when demuxing the dvd footage, but it will be compressed again once you burn the next dvd...not always such a pretty sight...or at least not as good as if you had the original.
Also, any artifacts introduced by encoding and compression the 1st time around will be there to stay. (Example: I was just given some football highlights on dvd..a lot of pixellation. No way to get rid of it. If I use it in my highlight video it's there to stay. Asked the supplier to give me the original tape...Was told it was already taped over. I think you get my point.)
Archive to dv tape, an external hard drive, etc.
Hope this helps. I'm sure others will chime in with helpful suggestions.

    Try this now.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

  • How can I install FL Studio (a installation dvd for Windows) on my macbook?

I've got a installation dvd (downloaded) for FL Studio but it is for Windows. I've read that you can set Windows softwares on your mac with Boot Camp. Can I do that with FL Studio 11 as well?

You need to install Windows OS first. One option is to use Bootcamp using  How to install Windows using Boot Camp - Apple Support.
You should check System Requirements for FL Studio 11, before you go further. From http://www.image-line.com/flstudio/
    FL Studio system requirements:
2Ghz Intel Pentium 4 / AMD Athlon 64 (or later) compatible CPU with full SSE2 support. The faster your CPU and more cores it has the more you will be able to do simultaneously. Download and test the demo!
32 or 64 Bit versions of Windows 8.0/8.1, Windows 7, Vista, XP (with service pack 3)
(or) Intel Mac with Boot Camp / Windows.
Running XP (with service pack 3), Vista or Windows 7 (in 32 or 64 Bit)
(or) Intel Mac with OS X 10.8 or 10.9 for the FL Studio Mac OS X BETA (Crossover Wrapped)
    Attention: Yosemite not supported.
1 Gb or more RAM recommended
    1 Gb free disk space
Soundcard with DirectSound drivers. ASIO/ASIO2 compatible required for audio recording (FL Studio installs with generic ASIO4ALL drivers)

  • How to copy the disc for offsite backup?

I would like to copy my new 10.4 system disc to keep as an offsite backup, as you are legally allowed to do, but can't, as it's copy protected. Will Apple FedEx me a new one if my original gets scratched, free of charge?

I can't speak for Apple, but I don't think there's any copy protection on the disk at all.
My iMac can't read the Apple install disks (no visible scratch, but there's just a few CDs and DVDs the drive can't seem to read -- yeah, I know I should get the drive replaced). So, I have a home-brew Linux box that I used to burn a copy of the disks (I can read the copies on my iMac just fine). Assuming you can read the disk, you ought to be able to create and image of it and burn that to a CD or DVD without a problem as a back-up.

  • How can I generate a mountain lion boot dvd for my 27" late 2012 iMac

baught the 27" late 2012 iMac and didn´t get any software dvd with it.
Due to the fact that I have the external DVD writer I would like to generate a bootable Mountain lion DVD for it.

First you will need to Downl;oad and Save the Mt Lion install files. They are not on the system as it is. you need to use the Recovery HD partition to do the download to an external drive and then when the system goes to Reboot to start the actual install of Mt Lion on that external you Disconnect that external so the install doesn't start.
Then once you boot back into the OS on the internal drive you Reconnect the external and use the program linked to in the above reply to Create a Mt Lion Install DVD or USB thumb drive.

  • How can I import the photos from dvd or hard disk?

    Hi!
How can I import/export my photos from dvd or hard disk??!

To what?    Are you having trouble with a DVD made by a particular device, or a hard disk that was on a particular computer, or is still in that computer, and communicating to your computer?  We don't have enough details to answer the question.    Are you trying to get photos into an iPhoto certain version, Photoshop certain version, just the Finder of a  certain version, or specific operating system on your Mac?    We need more details.  Is the DVD a standard DVD, such as is indicated on http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2446 or something non-standard?

  • How can I back up 8 gigs of photos to a disc?

My folder has gotten too big. how do I save 8 gigs of pics to a dvd for archive?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. If you want to archive only the original files and none of the iPhoto library organization, i.e. events, keywords, etc., you can use BurnToDisc for iPhoto which will burn your selected photos to disk and will burn to multiple disks if you've selected more that can fit on a single disk.
Otherwise follow Terence's suggestion on burning groups of Events via the Share->Burn menu in iPhoto.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.
