?? How do I archive my email on my own hard drive ??

?? How do I archive my email on my own hard drive ??
I have lost all of my past email due to provider hard drive crashes on Hotmail, Yahoomail and Netscapemail over five years.
I thought I solved this problem by having an IMAP provider and Thunderbird. Nope, Thunderbird somehow sees me as a brand new customer after six months of files.
I want my email saved on my own harddrive and saved automatically to an archive file;
?? Would you continue with a bank that periodically empties your safedeposit boxes ??
What is going on here ?? Is there a program that will securely handle my email ??
Thanks for your interest and help. Ken

Just create custom mailbox folders in Mail and store all your mail there, organized however you want. Type "IMAP" in the search box of Mail Help for specific instructions about how to keep local copies of your mail for that kind of accounts. Ask if you need more info.
You could do the same in Thunderbird, BTW. This is a server reliability problem, not a mail client problem. Most mail clients, if not all, allow you to do what you want, but you need to be aware of it and configure the application appropriately. Look at the following thread for an example of someone with a similar experience to yours using Mail:

  • How can I archive photos in iPhoto to a hard drive and retain the Album folders and the Events?

How can I archive photos in iPhoto to a hard drive and retain the Album folders and the Events?  I tried to Export the Albums but just transferred the files individually.

If you want to maintain the iPhoto organisation then back up the iPhoto Library.
If you want to export to the Finder, well you need to create a folder for the contents of an Album and expot to that.
If you have an older version of iPhoto: Apps like iPhoto2Disk or PhotoShare will help you export to a Folder tree matching your Events. This feature is built in to iPhoto 11.

  • How to get back the emails from an old hard drive that has no more OS ?

    Hello,
    My computer crashed recently.
The problem came from Windows somehow. So the hard drive is fine.
since windows couldn't be repaired I just copied a disk image backup to a new hard drive.
The problem is that I lost all the emails that were recieved between the moment I did my backup and now.
I can still access the folder :
    %USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\XXXXXXXX.default\Mail\
How can I use the files in that folder in order to get back my emails in Thunderbird ??
    thanks for your help!

Thunderbird mail is stored in MBOX files. these will be locted in the mile folder (well sub folders) along with an MSF index of their contents with the same name.
This add-on https://addons.mozilla.org/thunderbird/addon/importexporttools/ will import MBOX files. Once installed it adds an entry to the bottom of the Tools menu.

  • How can I move an emailed photo to my hard drive?

I am using yahoo mail on Firefox. I want to save an emailed photo.

Ah! Bootable clone!! I don't think that you can use a compressed image for that, i.e., the system can't uncompress itself on the fly. And Disk Utility's images aren't bootable per-se.
Try using SuperDuper ( http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/22126 ). I have over 6 bootable images of past and present startup volumes, spread over as many partitions in three external firewire HD's, created with that program. It is usually much faster to create a complete backup that way. Also a good reason to add an extra drive to the system, expecially since they've dropped so much in price. Go for a 500GB, 750GB, or the big 1TB whopper, stick it into one of your G5's bays (if available), partition it and clone away.
If all the partitions are available to the system, you can select which to boot from by pressing the Option key before the "bong" sound at startup.

  • How do I backup old emails on an external hard disk?

My email has way too many messages. I want to clear it out but save the email onto an external hard drive in case I may want to search them sometime in the future. Should I move them to OldEmails. Can OldEmails be saved to an external disk? How would I do this? Or is there a better way to accomplish this task?
    thanks in advance, Nadia

...And then save the archived mail boxes to the external hard drive. That way you can always re-import them into mac mail if need be. Once you've saved the archived mail boxes to the external drive, you could create a folder in mac mail called, for example, 'Old Emails', and then just put all the old emails into there as opposed to deleting them. However, if space on your hard drive is an issue, then you may just want to delete the old emails (from mac mail on your internal hard drive).
Keep in mind if you delete the old email messages from mac mail, and then for example, have to re-setup your email account in mac mail (if issues arise, etc.) all the 'old emails' will come back. They will come back only if they exist on the email server. They won't come back if there not on the server, for example, if you told mac mail to delete the messages off the server (which can be seen in the email account preferences) or deleted them off the server directly yourself. The easiest way to know if the same old email messages exist on the mail server is to log into the your email account via webmail (where you would go to log into your email account via a web browser such as safari). Some email accounts, such as @gmail.com, give very large amounts for storage (you won't run out of space anytime soon) but some offer very little and old emails are deleted off the server to clear space for new messages.

The same way you save ANY email attachment... which is going to depend on the email program you use... so check with support for your email program (or the help file to learn how to save an attachment)
When you OPEN a PDF attachment, what program are you using... Acrobat or Reader... both have options to save files

  • How do I transfer time capsul data to external hard drive to free up space?

How do I transfer time capsule data to external hard drive to free up space?

The fastest method is straight copy and paste..
Plug a suitable hard disk into your computer.. format it Mac OS extended journaled (if not already).
Select the folders/files you want to move.. copy and paste them to the external drive..
Double check that the files are copied because the next step will delete the files forever.. there is no trash on the TC.
Delete the files on the TC.
You can also do a full archive of the TC disk to a USB plugged into it by USB.. it must be formatted Mac OS Extended Journaled. It must be big enough to hold all data on the TC disk.. best idea is to buy the same size or bigger.. so if you use 2TB TC buy a 2TB or bigger external drive.
    In airport utility select archive.
That will copy everything on the TC disk to the USB drive.. you could then Erase the disk of the TC.. this is super fast if you choose quick erase.. just a few minutes. But the archive will take many hours.. say for 2TB about 12-24hours.. and you cannot use the disk in the TC during that time.

  • How much Ram can my Macbook use?  What Hard drive should I upgrade to?

    Hi Everyone.
I have a 2008 ish macBook with 4gb of Ram.  I use vmware Fusion to run Windows every day and I also use Aperture on a regular basis.
I'm looking to breath some life into this old machine and want to know how much ram the motherboard will support.  Here are the machine's specs.
    Hardware Overview:
      Model Name:          MacBook
      Model Identifier:          MacBook4,1
Processor Name:          Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed:          2.4 GHz
      Number Of Processors:          1
      Total Number Of Cores:          2
      L2 Cache:          3 MB
      Memory:          4 GB
      Bus Speed:          800 MHz
      Boot ROM Version:          MB41.00C1.B00
How muck Ram will the machine support?
My Hard drive is also nearly full and I would like to upgrade to a 500gb drive.  Any suggestions on which drive to choose?
    Thanks!!

You can install up to 6 GBs of RAM. There are any number of good choices for a hard drive replacement. I suggest visiting OWC for information on pricing, makes, and models. They also provide video tutorials on how to replace a drive in MacBooks.
To prepare for the upcoming release of Lion I also suggest spending $29 to buy a Snow Leopard DVD and upgrade your OS.

  • How do I properly zero out or erase the hard drives in my early 2009 Mac Pro 4,1 tower?

How do I properly zero out or erase the hard drives in my early 2009 Mac Pro 4,1 tower?
I assume there are already instructions on Apple.com someplace but haven't seen them yet… I have to one terabyte drives one the operating system the other is blank I want to start fresh I want to zero out both drives but I didn't want to make any mistakes
I know I can use disk utility to 0 Out Dr., #2 that means I will have to take out the operating system hard drive out of my 2008 Mac Pro and put it into my 2009 Mac Pro to use the disk utility to zero out drive one the OS drive in my 2009 Mac Pro am my correct
I just need a little bit a help I want to go slow so I don't make any mistakes with the sleds or with the erasing process which journaled to choose encrypted or not etc. etc.
Furthermore is there instructions on the site on how to change the hard drive into a different sled because the sleds and my 2009 are different than my 2008 any advice
    Thank you

I'm doing this because my friend told me that zeroing out the drive can nap bad sectors and also later for some kind of diagnostics usage of the drive or something like that he wasn't really clear
My friend was really specific he said choose the option that writes zero's once over the drive that is plenty good enough I was inclined to use the maximum seven write ...I just want to make sure the drive has no bad sectors and that's it's it's zeroed out for possible future diagnostics usage or something that he said was usable later
he also advised me to run a test on it but I don't have the software you mentioned or the software that he has… So I may have to take the drives over to his house unless you have some kind of free software that's easy to use that you could suggest that will not only zero out the drive but test the drive completely
I am completely new to Mac I'm no dummy but at the same time I'm not super technically capable I mean I can surprise myself I'm pretty good but I need a good teacher… How expensive is this lifeguard software?
    Thank you
