How do i arrange deleted files (in trash) in order of deletion time/date?

I accidentaly deleted several files (not sure of their files names, at least not all of them) so went to the trash to recover them and i didn't find a way to arrange or sort them by date of deletion. Given that they were just deleted it would have been the last 5-6 files or so. But i don't remember the files names or when they were last accessed of course! Is there any way to just short by deletion time and be done with that???

Thanks for the very quick response Nick .. this helped but it didn't seem to work for me (Mt. Lion on MBP).
i just don't see anything under "Date Added" !
I tried to create and delete a file after adding this column - same thing, all i get is "--" !
Any ideas how to fix this ?

  • How to permanently delete files from trash?

    I usually see TV series online. Every time I visit to the website, it automatically downloads a Mac_Installer file to my Downloads folder. I delete the file without opening it and secure empty the trash. When I visit the website again, the same file is downloaded to my Downloads folder, and the "previous deleted file" from the trash can reappears on it. How to solve this matter? My computer is a MacBook Pro and is running OS X Mavericks.
    Thanks.

    Try erasing free space using Disk Utility.
    Erase free disk space
    When you delete files in Mac OS X, your Mac deletes the information used to access the deleted files but doesn't physically remove them. Although the space used by the deleted files appears as free space, the deleted files remain on the disk until new files are written over them. As a result, these files can be recovered. Erasing free space does not delete any other files on your disk besides the ones that you already deleted.
    After the drive is connected, launch the Disk Utility application in any of the following ways:
    Type the first few letters of its name into Spotlight. Select it from the results.
    Go Finder > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility
    Go Launchpad > Utilities > Disk Utility
    Once you are in the Disk Utility app, select the disk or partition you would like to erase from the left.
    Select the Erase tab.
    Choose the Erase Free Space button.
    Use the Slider to choose how many times you would like to write over the free space.
    Select Erase Free Space.
    Note: After this process starts, you can cancel it at any time without harming any of your data. You might see a message stating that you are running out of disk space. This is normal and to be expected. You can ignore this message.
    When the process is complete, you should have the same amount of free space. If you do not have the same amount of free space, try restarting the computer.
    I hope I helped.

    I can´t delete files in trash . It stops after a short time undone.
    What can I do? There are 52 files in trash, but if I click the button "sure empty" it shows 11.313 files to delete .
    I would be very greatful for your help!

    Stronger medicine may be needed, but try this first
    Force the Trash to empty using the Option key
    This technique uses a hidden feature of Mac OS X to force the Trash to empty. Perform the following steps in the order specified:
    Press and hold the mouse button on the Trash icon in the Dock. The context menu for Trash will display.
    Press and hold the Option key or the Shift-Option keyboard combination,
    Select Empty Trash from the context menu for Trash.
    Release the keys pressed and held in step 2.

  • HT201250 Does Time Machine delete files in back-ups that are deleted on my Mac?

    Does Time Machine delete files in back-ups that are deleted on my Mac?  IOW....if I need to restore a whole back-up, I don't want to restore previously deleted files.

    Does Time Machine delete files in back-ups that are deleted on my Mac?
    Not immediately. When space starts to get tight, Time Machine will start to delete the oldest file(s) to make more room, but this won't occur for some time.
    if I need to restore a whole back-up, I don't want to restore previously deleted files.
    You won't if you choose to restore from a backup that occurred after the date that you deleted the file.
    If you absolutely do not want to keep the file in your Time Machine backups at all, you do have the option to go into Time Machine, find the file, and manually delete all versions of the file from past dates.

  • How do I remove a file to trash from my desktop? when I drag to trash it says I cannot delete

    I'm a seasoned iMac user but forgot from the "old days" how to delete a file to trash from the desktop when it says "The item ......can't be moved to the Trash because it can't be deleted". This is a file I downloaded a few days ago. Can you help, please?

    Thank you for answering- I must have posted the question twice. Another helpful person helped me solve it. I have to shake my head at my dumb self.....all I needed to do was restart the machine and the file disappeared. A total "duh" moment for this "seasoned" Mac user. Again, thanks for answering.

  • Can't delete file from Trash

    Hi,
    I received a JPG file which I downloaded that caused my Mac to run extremely slowly.
    I deleted it to Trash and the Mac is now working normally but when I go to empty the trash it doesn't delete the file because it says the file is still in use. Even when I select continue it still doesn't delete.
    How can I get rid of this file permanently from the Trash?
    Thanks.

    very strange that finder would be using it.
    do this. paste the following into Script Editor (it's in /Applications/utilities) and press the run button.
    <pre style="
    font-family: Monaco, 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;
    font-size: 10px;
    margin: 0px;
    padding: 5px;
    border: 1px solid #000000;
    width: 720px;
    color: #000000;
    background-color: #ADD8E6;
    overflow: auto;"

  • UNABLE TO VIEW ANY FILES IN TRASH, AND UNABLE TO DELETE THEM.

    Hi i wondered if someone can help ,me on this one as i have searched for an answer and nothing works.
    I have upgraded to my new iMac and migrated all my files over, i have now deleted some of the unwanted files and folders, to free up space.
    HOWEVER - i have tried deleting them and cant, so as some of them are locked i went back into the trash to unlock them and even though there are thousands of files in the trash none of them are viewable, so i cant drag them back out, drag them to the terminal window or anything.
    I have repaired privileges
    I have tried to use the terminal window and delete files, but cant view them to drag them
    I have tried to secure deleted them
    My problem is i cant view the files so i cant do anything with them.
    Does any one have any ideas,
    should i try to delete the .trash file as i think someone mentioned in which case how do i do that.
    Any help would be fantastic. Thank you in advance
    Kris Watson

    I have managed to resolve this problem (however it is still deleting the files so fingers are crossed still.) Thanks for the help by the way.
    A friend showed me a way to do it, thought ide put it out there so people might benefit from it.
    I restarted with the shift key pressed down. after about 4-5 mins it starts in Safe Boot mode, ive logged in, and started to secure delete the files and it seems as though it is working although very slowly as there are thousands of files.
    The reason the are so many files is that they are all 'old' time machine back ups from my old powerbook. Me being the extra cautious bunny that i am have several copies of every file anyway 'just in case', so it will take house but it will free up huge amounts of space.
    thanks again

    I recently updated to 10.9.2. Nothing seemed to have changed but the trash folder is acting funny. Now I am not able to delete any file from the trash. Is there a way out of this?

  • HOw to create a text file in the given path and delete it after the use?

    Hi all,
    I am trying to create a text file at the given path and delete the created file after the use.
    I am using following code.:
    import java.io.*;
    // write binary data as characters
    public class RanIO {
                                            public static void main(String f[])
                                                      // First illustrate append
                                                      String lineSep = "\n";
                                                      try {
                                                                     File temp= new File("C:/Ash","cute.txt");
                                                      boolean ch=temp.createNewFile();
                                                      if(ch)

                                                      p.print("Emp NO");
                                                      p.close();*/
                                                                // Open fileWriter in append mode
                                                                               FileWriter fos = new FileWriter(temp, true);
                                                                               BufferedWriter bw = new BufferedWriter(fos);
                                                                               PrintWriter pw = new PrintWriter(fos);

                                                                          // lineSep = System.getProperty("line.separator");
                                                                          pw.print("Hello");
                                                                          //pw.print( lineSep );
                                                                          pw.print( d );
                                                                          pw.close();
                                  boolean det=temp.delete();
                                                 if(det)
                                                      System.out.println("File deleted");
                                                 else
                                                      System.out.println("File not deleted");
                                                 } catch (IOException ioe)
                                                                System.out.println( "Append IO error:" + ioe );
    My problem:
    1)
    I am not able to write to the file. I want to know, where i am going wrong.
    It is giving error message like
    "Canot resolve Symbol: temp,"
    But, FileWriter Constructor should accept a File type parameter.
    here temp is a file parameter.
    If i am not using file=new file();
    i can't delete the file after the use. i.e if i use
    PrintWriter p = new PrintWriter(new BufferedWriter(new FileWriter("cute.txt",true)));
    how can i delete cute.txt after the use?
    2)
    I am not able to write to the text file. file is created but, a blank file.
    "Hello" is not written into the text file.
    can anyone help me in this regard
    Thanks in advance
    Ashvini

    Thank you Ram,
    But, i want to create a text file in Append mode.
    for that i used
    FileWriter fos = new FileWriter(temp,true); But, it is not accepting FileWriter constructor in
    this format. if i use
    FileWriter fos = new
    FileWriter("c:/ash/cute.txt",true); it works fine. !!!!!Here's the javadoc
    public FileWriter(File file,
    boolean append)
    throws IOExceptionConstructs a FileWriter object given a File object. If the second argument is true, then bytes will be written to the end of the file rather than the beginning.
    Parameters:
    file - a File object to write to
    append - if true, then bytes will be written to the end of the file rather than the beginning
    Throws:
    IOException - if the file exists but is a directory rather than a regular file, does not exist but cannot be created, or cannot be opened for any other reason
    Since:
    1.4
    Are you using jdk.13 or lower ?
    >
    ONe more doubt, Does flush method deletes a file?
    if not, then i need to use
    File temp=new File("c:/ash/cute.txt");
    FileWriter fos = new FileWriter(temp,true); //which
    is again a problem
    if(temp.delete())
    out.println("File is deleted");
    }I don't know whether i am taking it wrong ! or
    anything wrong with my coding ! but, after creating
    and writing data into a text file. I must delete it
    as it contains confidential informations.
    Regards,
    Thanks.'flush' writes to a file immediately. Else you should explicitly call 'flush' to write contents from buffer to underlying source.
    javadoc again
    PrintWriter
    public PrintWriter(Writer out,
    boolean autoFlush)Create a new PrintWriter.
    Parameters:
    out - A character-output stream
    autoFlush - A boolean; if true, the println, printf, or format methods will flush the output buffer
    cheers,
    ram.
    Question; What do you gain by opening a file, writing to it and deleting it in the same program ?

  • How do I retrieve a file from Trash using Time Machine in Mavericks?

    Is it even possible to retrieve a file from Trash from a Time Machine backup? Does Time Machine even back up the Trash? I've been told a total restore from a Time Machine backup will put the past Trash back on the Mac, but what if I just want to restore an individual file?
    Shortly after emptying my Trash on my Mac (10.9.4) for the first time in weeks, I realized I needed one of the files I'd just erased. Trying to retrieve with Time Machine was not fruitful, however, because I couldn't find the file on any of the past backups using the normal Enter Time Machine interface. However, I know it would have been in the Trash during all of the most recent backups.
    So I researched how to find the backups of Trash with Time Machine, but I think all of the solutions I found on various online forums were pre-Mavericks and do not seem to work now. I've basically tried 2 things:
    Show Trash in Finder using the Terminal command: open ~/.Trash
    It shows the hidden Trash folder in Finder, located in Macintosh HD/Users/User. For easy access, I added the .Trash folder to the Finder Sidebar. But I can't get to it in the backups. The Trash shortcut in the Finder Sidebar is always grayed out in the old backups using the Time Machine app. And it does not show up in ~ when looking through the backups.backupdb folder on my external HD.
    I also tried the Terminal command to show all hidden files in Finder: defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles YES
    But while many hidden files do suddenly appear in Finder, curiously, the User's .Trash folder is not one. This is true for the Finder of the Mac, the backups.backupdb folder on the External HD, and Time Machine app.
    Thanks.

    How do I retrieve a file from my backup in Time Capsule?
    It depends on the type of file that you are trying to retreive.
    In general.....
    Open Time Machine by clicking on the clock icon on the dock
    Wait a few minutes for Time Machine to fully load
    Use the timeline at the far right of the window to go back in time to a date when the file was still on your Mac
    Click that date
    Navigate using the Finder interface to locate the file that you want
    Click on the file to highlight it
    Click Restore at the lower right of the window to be brought back to the present
    You have to retrieve other types of files differently. For details, see:
