How do I attain a 8x10 print size?

Hi
I have read the manual and the Scott Kelby book, but my question still hasn't been answered. I hope someone here can help me as I am getting totally frustrated. I have Elements 4 (a new user to PS). I have the Canon Rebel XT (8 megapixels). My settings for quality and resolution are large and fine. I have taken a close-up picture of a rose that I would like to print at a store (Ritz Camera) on a 8x10 sheet. Now, in my opinion, it doesn't need to be cropped, maybe i'll play around with the Sharpening tool a little. When I am done editing it, here is where it gets fuzzy for me:
1. If I go to ReSize/Image Size, first I will DESELECT ReSample. Then under "Document Size", I will 10 in for Width, and then see what it selects for proportate Height (I am not at my own pc right now, that's why I am guessing here). I am assuming it will select something close to 8 for Height.
2. Resolution - don't have a clue? What do I put in there? And If I decide to go with a 5x7 size, what would the resolution be for that?
3. Save the file as a jpeg.
4. Burn it to a CD, and bring it to the store and hope it comes out looking beautiful as a 8x10 photo.
Am I missing anything? And would the directions be the same even if I did crop it first?
Thanks to anyone who can help me.....

Ruth,
You've gotten plenty of good advice already, but I can't resist adding my
own 2¢... ;-)
Presuming a standard 4:3 aspect ratio of your camera's image, you will
probably want to specify the shorter (height vs. width) value as 8", and let
the other be dynamically set by Elements.
Note that, in addition to the other dimension adjusting when you enter one
of them, the resolution also adjusts on the fly. This is simple math.
Elements looks at the actual pixel dimensions of your image, and divides by
the number of inches you have specified, and tells you how those pixels will
be distributed across the print.
For instance, if the image is 2400x1800 pixels (a 4:3 ratio), and the width
is set to be 10", the height adjusts to 7.5" and the resolution becomes
240ppi. If the WIDTH is set to 8, the height adjusts to 10.667", and the
resolution becomes 225.
(The same image, given a height of 5", gets a width of 6.667 and a
resolution of 360 -- this being the way to prepare for a 5x7 print.)
With an 8Mpx camera, I would expect your image's pixel dimensions to be
sufficiently large that, once you have resized, your resolution will be just
fine for printing... if you have doubts, please post back with your final
resolution figure for confirmation.
If it were ME doing this, I would resize by specifying 8" as the short
dimension of the image. Then I would use the Rectangular Marquee tool in
Fixed Size mode, set to 8"x10" (or vice versa, depending on the orientation
of the image), to make my final crop. With it in that mode, just click in
the image and the selection line appears in the exact measurements. While
the marquee is present, you can click/drag it to crop the extra as you see
fit. Then, click Image > Crop on the menu, resulting in a perfectly-sized
image on which YOU made the decision about what would be kept/cropped.
One final thing to watch. When you do the resize, if your resolution comes
out with a fractional pixel (i.e. 225.667), enter that field and round DOWN
to the next whole pixel (225, in this example). This will result in
marginally larger image dimensions, but you're going to be handling that
with the final crop, anyway. Fractional pixels have been associated with
weirdness in printing, and it safest to avoid the whole issue.
Nothing like TOO much information!!

Byron

  • How to display a page at 100% size?

When I put the zoom at 100%, the page appears much smaller than real. My monitor is a 24" 1920x1200 pixels with 0.27 mm pixel size (that is 94 dpi)
I suppose there has to be some way to tell illustrator my screen has 94 dpi for it to display pages at the correct size, but I can't locate it.
In Adobe Photoshop this option is at Preferences/Units and Rulers but where is in Illustrator?

When you set in Photoshop "preferences/Units and rulers/Screen resolution" (I'm translating from my spanish menus, so it can be slightly different in english), you are telling the program what is the size of the pixels in your screen. This is enough for the computer to know how to display an image at the real size. If you make a DIN A4 document at 300 dpi in Photoshop, and you have set the mentioned parameter correctly, when you choose "View/Print size", you obtain in your screen a view of the document at the size it is supposed to be printed (so the document will occupy in the screen exactly 29,7 x 21 cm). Note this is different from 100% view (or "Real Pixels"). The fact this parameter is under "Preset resolutions for new documents" is a bit confusing, but it affects how you see any document at Print size, not only the new documents and is totally different from "Print resolution" (but depends on it). You can change the print resolution of any old document at "Image/Image Size..." but you can't change "its" screen resolution because this is a parameter of your computer screen, not of your document.
If you want to obtain the same effect in Microsoft Word, you have to go to "Control Panel/Screen/Configuration/Advanced Options/General/Dots per Inch Configuration" and this parameter will affect Microsoft Word. When you set the zoom lever at 100% in Word, again you will obtain  in your screen a view of the document at the size it is supposed to be printed.
In Corel Draw, the corresponding parameter is at "Tools/Options/tool Box/Zoom Tool/Calibrate rulers...". There you can set the parameter numerically or you can use a set of on screen rulers to calibrate it. So when you set the zoom lever at 100%, again you will obtain in your screen a view of the document at the size it is supposed to be printed.
Notice you're working with vectors in Corel DRaw and Word (well, vector pictograms of letters or as we all know them: fonts) but you are working with bitmaps in Photoshop. That's why the 100% zoom is different in Photoshop than in the other programs (including Illustrator).  and that's also why Photoshop has the Print size option. In the other programs, Print size and 100% would be the same but not in a bitmap program.
If you take a look in your monitor user manual you most likely will find a page of specifications where it tells you the dot size. This parameter can vary in CRT monitors that raster the image on a phosphor screen but is fixed in LCD monitors that have a fixed led matrix. If you don't have the manual or have a CRT monitor you can calculate the parameter by measuring the display size horizontally  (from leftmost to rightmost displayed pixel) and dividing it by your screen resolution (the number of horizontal pixels).
In my User manual it says the dot size is 0.27 mm, that means 94 dpi (25.4 mm in an inch divided by 0.27). Or, in case I would have lost the manual, I would just measured the scren width and obtained 518.5 mm that divided by 1920 pixels horizontal resolution gives a result of 0.27 mm per pixel.
So, my question is ¿Is there some way of setting this parameter in Illustrator?

  • How do i  change print size?

when printing a pdf i try to save paper by printing two sheets to a page . the result is large margins on both sides and in the middle and top and bottom with the print area reduced in size and the print so small it is very difficult to read. i can't work out how to reduce the size of the blank margins and hopefully increase the print size.
can you suggest a way around this?

    Hey,
This issue may be coming into play from a conflict of drivers.  What model HP printers do you have?
Some HP printers use PCL3 and are compatible with using multiple alternate drivers.  I would advise trying to use the HP Deskjet 9800 driver as a way to get past the driver conflict.  For information on how to use an alternate driver please click here.
Let me know if this helps,

your right.. i ment acrobat pro :-)
my problem is that i use the PDF printer to export CAD drawings as PDF´s.
As it is now, there are some pre-defined page sizes in the print settings, and i know i can add custom pages manually one at a time.
What i want is to copy the list of my danish standard page sizes, and use them on my other versions of acrobat.
Its like 70 different sizes, and i have them made manually on my current computer, but i hope its possible to copy the list to other computers.
Maby its some script where i can define the sizes, and then copy to another computer. Im just not that much of a computer genius :-)
Hope i got through this without to many spelling mistakes...

  • How do you determine resolution for a given print size in LR?

CS3 displays image resolution for a given size. How do you determine what that resolution is in LR for a given print size, so you know whether you should upsize or downsize for optimum print resolution range?

The only way I know of is to work it out. LR and PS make assumptions that are often not ideal (although the differences may not be noticable). Different printers like different resolutions per inch. For example, I once had an Olympus Dye Sub printer that produced awful prints unless the file was exactly 314 ppi. Not 300, 314. 300ppi looked awful. 314 looked amazing. Many Canon inkjets prefer 300ppi files and most of the better Epson's prefer 360ppi. Lambda printer like 400ppi files.
So find out what the printer likes, and in LR enter that number into the printer dialog. I believe the LR engine interpolates the file based on this and the image size on paper you choose to produce a file of the best size.
Having said all that with most modern domestic and prosumer inkjets the difference is pretty negligable.

  • Lightroom automaticaly enlarges print size. How do you stop this?

How do you keep Lightroom from changing the print size? For example, if I have a 4.5 x 7.5 image ( the image size displayed in PS), LR seems to want to make it larger than this size, such that it fits into an arbitrary cell size designated by the "Fine Art Mat" template. I select this template because the other single cell templates want to enlarge it even more.
How do you tell Lightroom to leave the image size alone? Right now I have to open the image in PS, check the exact size dimensions, then switch back to LR and specify these dimensions in the cell size, which rounds the numbers off to two decimal places. This is time consuming and awkward. Why isn't the default to print the image its actual size instead changing to fit an arbitrary cell size in a template? Lightroom is suppose to make things simpler, but in this case it makes it more complicated.
Also, if you want a specific size image and ppi, is there some way to specify the size like you can do in PS?

    Alexander,
What I mean is print size. I agree that it is possible to specify a cell size, which is how print size is specified in LR. The problem is that LR doesn't know what size the image is suppose to be printed at. This is not my fault, but a fault in the design of LR.
The actual print size of a digital image is determine by its number of pixels and the specified resolution. These parameters are encoded in each image file. LR fails to recognize this information, ignores the information and automatically changes these parameters to fit into an arbitrary cell dimension/resolution.
This is LR fault and not the photographer. It creates a very real issue to not only photographers who scan artwork but also for photographers who have regularly made prints in the past of their own work or artwork they reproduce for others. For example I and many photographers make prints of our work, exhibit this work and sell it. Our image files have encoded in them the pixel dimension/resolution, thus the print size on paper. When a print is ordered, then we want to be able to print it out quickly at this encoded print size. This should be a zero step process, as far as image print sizing goes, since we have already previously encoded the print size.
Print sizing in LR is not a zero step process for previously encoded files, it involves the steps outlined in my original posts. This is an issue to many photographers who sell prints of their work or reproduce artwork of other artists. Granted it only takes a minute or two completing the steps I have outlined, but this is a nuisance, considering that it could be very simply avoided by the suggestions outlined by myself and other posters to this thread.

Clips from JVC Everio camcorders have always had this problem with Premiere Elements (all versions). You need to select Interpret Footage.
See this FAQ from PE version 2, step 3. Like I said it has been this way with all versions:
    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.3bc1265c
You might be able to use this tool to change the header of your MOD files so they are seen as 16:9: http://www.videohelp.com/tools/DVDPatcher
Or use this program (SDCopy) to download the video's from the cam, it will allow you to copy straight from the cam to your PC and auto renames and corrects the aspect ratio.

  • How to set Photoshop to show actual print size?

When I go to View Print Size the resultant image is smaller than the actual print size.  How do I set PS to show the actual size on my monitor?

Measure the physical horizontal viewing length of your monitor. 11.25 inches for example.
Then the horizontal resolution your monitor is set to. 1280 pixels as an example.  divide 1280 by 11.25 to get 113.77 pixels per inch, your screen resolution. Round it out to 114.
In Photoshop: Edit menu > Preferences > Units and Rulers, and in New Document Presets, change the Screen Resolution to 114.  Click OK, restart Photoshop.
After that when you use View > Print Size, your onscreen rulers will match up to a physical ruler and your documents will be at the physical print size set in your document's dimensions under Image > Image Size.

  • How to change print size on HP Envy 5530

    Hi,
I just set up my new Envy 5530 printer and have begun printing. I am not seeing an option to change the print size. As I primarily will be using this printer for business shipping postage labels, I usually reduce my print copy to 85% to save ink, paper, and shipping tape. I had this option on my old HP printer- but am not seeing an option for it anywhere in the print set up window when I go to print. Help!
Thank you for your assistance, Nuit

    Hi @nuit
I see you are trying to make the font smaller on your printed output.  If you are using Internet Explorer you can use this document; Text is Small When Printing from Internet Explorer. If however, you are using AOL you can following these instructions from this post, 'how do i make the text larger'.
As you can see modifying the text size is going to depend on the program you are using. If you are not using Internet Explore or AOL, can you please post back with more detail. What Browser are you using and/or what programs you are printing from, and what operating system, and version do you have? Mac or Windows?
