How do I avoid data loss during setup?

Update: below is my original question/concern. But since posting, I've come across others posting about data loss at various stages of install and initial setup and syncing. None of those posts have been replied to, and I think many of us need some answers. So after reading one guys calendar got scrubbed, I checked mine and the same thing... I had synced through iTunes before upgrading, and all my freshly updated calendar events had been erased when I enabled iCloud. Honestly, what is it with Apple's obsession with deleting people's data when adding new equipment or services?
So add to my question below, a how to for getting data from existing devices to cloud w/o having cloud erase files and data from devices...
I'm just setting up. I want to go into this cloud thing slowly, starting with just calendar syncing.
I go to settings: Documents and Data and click it off. I get a pop up witch says "All documens and Data stored in iCloud will be deleted from this iPad"
What?
This switch was in the on position upon install. Have my Documents and data already been scarfed to the cloud, where now if I turn off the feature I lose my files?
And what about down the road if one wants to turn off the feature after it's been in use? Doe my iPad get scrubbed of my files?
Am I learning that once my files get sent to the cloud, the server holds a copy which I can never scrub off iCloud?
The way that warning reads, my only option for taking a device off the grid is to have my data scrubbed from that device.
What am I missing? I want to control which of my data makes it to the cloud. This says they take it all up front and steal my copy if I try to get my device off the grid. No?
Please help me understand how to control which of my files go to the cloud, and how not to have my files removed from my device if I chose to opt out of the docs and data sync feature?

PS why would they ever make that a consequence of turning off the feature?

Unless you have signed up for AT&T's international roaming for phone calls, I suggest putting the device into Airplane mode. That is what I did when I did the 3 day Bahamas Cruise. And to support what AmishCake said, the cruise lines charge for their wi-fi. Generally a daily 24-hour charge, or they will have a special for the length of the cruise, but it is pricey.

Data loss during Pagination

I have a dropdown selection box setup on a PHP page and its
options coming from a MySQL database. When user selects an option,
it will POST to another detail PHP page to list out all records. I
used the recordset and server behavior functions in Dreamweaver 8
to achieve that.
It works well until I setup pagination using server behavior
function to limit records displayed on the page. The first page of
records displayed OK but when I click next page or last page,
nothing was displayed although the record number showing correctly.
It seemed the option value posted to page 1 OK but lost when
viewing 2nd, 3rd....pages.
Anyone has any idea on how to rectify it ? PLEASE

I think that there's a disclaimer you can read about data loss during repairs. I'd have to locate it but essentially it says that you need to back up files for any repairs. You just never know. Whether it's a logic board or a Shift key, you just don't know what they're doing or how they're doing it. So it's best to back up.
Call the store. It's not ridiculous. All sorts of people have all sorts of important data on their machines - data that is crucial to them. It's not a big deal.

How to update cgicmd.dat file during runtime?

I'd like to know how do update cgicmd.dat file during runtime. For example, I run a report one.jsp as

within this report there is a hyperlink to open another report named two.jsp.
before creating this hyperlink, I'd like to update cgicmd.dat file with passed in userID, pwd, and connection, so two.jsp can use this key for userinfo
so I can create hyperlink as follows

To my knowledge the cgicmd.dat is only read when the OC4J starts, so you would have to come up with another solution. Using Single-Sign-On (SSO) is quite a good idea, and it's there for cases like this.

Interfaces Restore - How to recover from Data Loss

Dear Friends,
Since 4:00 PM Yesterday our ERP system is started issueing short dupms it was continued till 11:00 PM. So we have decided to shut down the system.
After detailed analysis we found that the route cause of the issue is curruption of one block in database. SAP and Oracle data base experts are trying to recoved the data but it seems it is not possible,
Now the only option we have is restore the system from backup. the last back up of the system is @4:00 pm yesterday. Now the issue is we have data loss of 8 Hrs bussiness transactions. my customer is very big SAP instalation and we have very complext interface. interfacing with arount 200 systems 2000 IDoc intefaces and many more file interfaces etc... This is the first time we are facing this issue and we need to think of how we can sync the Interfaces again.
For masterdata coming from external systems we can simply ask the partner system to resend the Idocs or Files. But for transactional data we can still request them to send the Idocs or files to my SAP system but we should some how avoid sending the confirmations back to partner systems.
Could you please let me know did you faced this kind of problems and did you applied any best practices.
All kind of suggessions are wellcome!!!!.....

I am using a dynamic Tab. Each tab contains a seperate jsp page.( the jsp page is included for the corresponding tab). Each page can contain more than 25 fields. The problem is for example i will select some check box in the first tab and i will go the second tab and i will do some insert operations , when i came back to the first tab , the checkbox which i had selected or the text what i had entered should be there. If it can be solved by using AJAX, pls guide me.
Tools i am using : jsp, struts.
Looking forward to hear to solve this problem.

i mean if u r using a form bean for ur jsp. use name name atrribute of the sturts html tag. and give the form bean name to the name attribute i hope this would solve your problem

Data loss during the initialization of sales documents

Hi,
I have to initialize all my sales documents data with the extractors 2LIS_11_VAITM, 2LIS_11_VAHDR and 2LIS_11_VASCL.
I have done those steps :
1 - Clear set up tables for application 11.
2 - Fill the setup table for application 11.
3 - Do Init with data transfer of those extractors.
But when I look the data the next day (after the deltas which are running in the night), I have a loss of som sales documents.
Can anybody explain me why ?

Have you locked the application tables during your initialization process..?
You have to lock the application tables(so that users cannot create sales orders) until the below process completed.
1)filling setup tables.
2)Run IP init with data transfer.
Now you can unlock, because we have delta queue now and any orders created will be updated to delta queue and this will be moved to BI in next delta.
Solution:
Now if you know the sales document numbers run the full repiar IP with sales document as selection.You will get the missed records.and you delta will work fine

How can I mark data acquired during DAQ?

I am acquiring analog data from an accelerometer with LabView 6.1 and I need to mark some time points during the acquision to indicate the time at which some events occurs during the measurement. I want to do this by pressing the space bar of the keyboard or by clicking a button of the mouse each time the event occurs. I want that the mouse or keyboard event is synchronized with the DAQ. Haw can I do both things?

App won't update or load. How to fix without data loss?

My favorite game, Infinity Blade, won't update. It started to update but the progress bar (that shows on top of the icon) never advanced (remained fully black inside). That happened probably at least a year ago and has stayed like that. When I updated to iOS 6 it stayed like that. I synced my phone to my Mac but that didn't fix it either.
I would just delete the game then re-download, but I read that if I do that, I'll lose my saved games, because they're stored inside the app itself.
So the question is: how can I fix this without losing my saved game?
Further WHY does it store data INSIDE the app? That seems like the worst idea ever.

It's quite simply put ridiculous for saved games to get deleted when the game itself gets deleted, without the user having any choice in the matter! Likewise if I wrote a future bestseller then deleted Pages because I wanted to switch to a competing word processor, and by deleting Pages it deleted my bestseller, I'd be royally ticked off, and rightfully so!
My data and documents are MINE, not Apple's, not the app's. I should have the option, if I so choose, to decide roughly where to keep my own files, and also to decide when and if they get deleted, regardless of what apps I choose to have on my device at any given time.
I find it to be an invasion of my privacy and an invasion of my intellectual property to have my saved data, which I created, deleted by the OS, ever, just because I want to delete the application that created those files. I believe that many files should adhere to standard file formats, such as audio files, text files, contacts, JPGs, etc. It should not matter which app created them, as to where they are stored. The system is quite capable of creating a hard-link to the file and storing THAT inside the application's sandboxed directory if it really wants to have a file path to the iNode. Time Machine already does this on the Mac. They could easily do it with iOS.
But then, we both know there is no technical reason why they want to hide our documents from us and force us to delete them when we remove an app. There is no technical reason why we must be forced to go through the kludge-fest that is iTunes File Sharing in order to even access our documents. Ever hear of the FINDER? Go back 15 years and read reviews in Macworld. Any device that didn't give Finder-level access to the files on it was deemed as being "non-Mac-like." Guess what? The iOS is non-Mac-like in many bad ways.
I'm all for the iOS-ization of the Mac when it comes to things like the gestures and notifications, etc. But ruining my Save and Save As? They went too far. They need to step back, and go add some Mac-like features back to the iOS. It's gotten too curmudgeonly and closed-in on itself. It's too proprietary, and too convolluted in some ways.
A game takes up a lot of gigs. By removing a game for awhile I could save a lot of memory. If I'm stuck in a pinch and I want to delete it, but then I realize my game's saved data is on my device with no way to get it out of there (because perhaps I'm up in the mountains with no 'cloud' access, as I often am), then it's stupid to have to delete the game's data along with the game. I should be able to delete just the game, but keep the saved data.
As for it being 'splattered' around, it would not be. What your'e describing is OS X's "Library" folder and how apps install crap into every corner of the universe. Trying to uninstall something like Pro Tools 10 or Adobe CS6 is like trying to remove blue from a Jackson Pollock. They need to have an easy way to remove apps on the Mac.
But 'splattered' does not describe the limited number of documents I'd likely have on my iPhone, with or without their supporting apps. It would be simple to have a view (like the Finder!) where you can see your documents and files. It could keep them organized for you, unless you really insist on organizing them yourself -- and even then, it could just let you work with links to the files, ala iPhoto, and keep its directory structure intact secretly. Is it really that "annoying" to you to be able to see and manage your own files, if you want to? Really? You're joking me right?
I'd be fine with it if they wanted to sandbox documents to where, in my documents folder, there'd be another folder where all my saved games for Infinity Blade are stored, and I can't move them around. But I should be able to create a backup copy of those and e-mail them to myself, if I feel like it.
If people can't handle it, then just make an option to "manage all my documents for me" and have it be the default setting (like it already is). Make people type "I am not an idiot and I know how to use a computer" to access this folder. Whatever. I don't care. But I'm really sick and tired of my iOS device being crippled in the name of some hypothetical idiot who might whine. Puh-leeze.

Multiple users, avoiding data loss

Hi, Here is the problem
User a reads data from row r in table t
User b reads data from row r in table t
User b updates data and writes back to table t
User a updates data and writes back to table t
User b's update was lost.
We are using custom DAO, JDBC, a transaction level of Read_Committed, a connection pool, Oracle DB and OC4J
I think that the DB would be fine as far as consistency is concerned, but What I'd like to know is the best way to stop user b's update being lost as they would think they had made an update but the DB wouldn't reflect this?
Any help/ideas greatly appreciated

the row with user "b"'s update. Would a
scroll-sensitive "ResultSet" ensure that? (I don't
know, since I haven't tried it.)This won't be a problem as users a&b are at the same level and can change the same rows.
But once user "a" has overwritten user "b"'s change,
then user "b"'s change is gone. What would you
expect? A message to user "a" saying, 'sorry, you
can't change this row because another user already
has!'Something like that I was thinking of just putting up the jsp again causing the DAO to re-read the record, with a message telling the user what has happened. For this app we can't have customer info (possibly entered by user b) disappear...
Any further ideas? or places to go look?

Downgrade Admin to "Managed with parental controls" - no data loss?

I want to change my daughter's iMac account (originally my wife's computer) from "Admin" to "Managed with parental controls."
Is this possible while saving all of her school work/music/etc. which are now under the admin login/account? Or do I backup her home folder, delete the admin account, add a new one for me, then put her back in as "Standard" and go from there?
Hope there is an elegant/easy way to avoid data loss while still upgrading security on her usage...

hi k,
yes you can down grade her account and enable parental controls. This will not delete her content such as itunes, photos, documents, extra.
if you haven't done so already, make another administrator account with you will use to manage the computer. Make sure the account has a password; and that password is not the same as her password.
then Login with the new administrator account.
go to system preferences and click on accounts. unlock accounts by clicking on the lock. click on the old administrator account. now uncheck allow this user to administrate this computer. then check enable parental controls. then click on the open parental controls button.
you can now configure parental controls.

Pages '09 data loss - can I recover it?

Last night I saved a 131 page document to my RAID airdisk (purposefully a RAID array to avoid data loss). I then copied the document over to my iDisk for additional safe keeping. When I sat down again to edit it about 22 hours later, ALL COPIES of the document had been reduced to just 12 pages. I saved the document at 11pm the night before and the copies all list that time as the last time the document was accessed.
Is there anything I can do to get the data back? Anything I can do to avoid this problem in the future? It is an ongoing project so I save out drafts once a week to chart my progress. All of those documents are 100-120 pages and are still intact on both the iDisk and the airdisk.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

What exactly are you referring to? Are the menus or templates for Pages in a different language? Does something strange appear on the screen when you type?
Could you perhaps use the Camera icon here to post a screenshot of what you are seeing?
To make sure you have the right keyboard, go to system preferences/language & text/input sources and make sure that only the box for US or British is checked (and that the box for French or German or anything else is not checked).

How can i avoid phase delay in annalog input data acquisition of multi channels

    I am using a PCI-6251 M Series board and wish to acquire two analog signals and output one analog signal simultaneously. I have a question about multi-function -synch ai-ao.vi .With this Vi I work out annalog input of one channel and   data output of one channel synchronously.I take some change in the vi which I make the sampling rate and sampling number of input and output channel be equal. But when i increase the input channel from one to two,a problem come that is the data acquired always shift towards one direct which depends on the sampling rate(for example data shift turn left when 250kS/s,right when 200kS/s). Does the phenomena mean phase delay or lag during accquring data? or mean data loss? how it happen ?
   I wonder if the acquisition on both channels is perfectly simultaneous.I hope the start of data acquisition each time be the same all time.
          I would appriciate it if any comment and suggestion.

The specifications for the PCI-6251 state that it is not a simultaneous sampling board. This means that the board has one A/D converter which is multiplexed between channels. How much time delay is between channels is determined by how the board timing works, but it cannot be less than the reciprocal of the maximum sampling rate. For that board this is 1/1.25 MS/s or 800 ns. The delay could be as much as the reciprocal of your actual sampling rate. You need to look at the detailed specification for the device to determine the intersample delay. Some boards require addditional delay when switching channels to allow the multiplexer and amplifier to settle.
Perhaps you can sample at a rate that is high enough that the delays produce acceptably small phase shifts. If your signals a deterministic enough, you may be able to calculate the shift and compensate.
If you need true simultaneous sampling, you will need to check the specifications to be sure that the device you select offers that capability. I took a quick look at NI's web site DAQ search page and that is not a top level search option, but as you start to specify channels and sampling rates it becomse available.

Most important the dataguard protection mode, you have 3 choices: Maximum Performance,Maximum Availability,Maximum Protection . If you are interested in no data loss choose Maximum Protection, that's the definition:
Maximum Protection
This protection mode ensures that zero data loss occurs if a primary database fails. To
provide this level of protection, the redo data needed to recover a transaction must be
written to both the online redo log and to at least one synchronized standby database
before the transaction commits. To ensure that data loss cannot occur, the primary
database will shut down, rather than continue processing transactions, if it cannot
write its redo stream to at least one synchronized standby database.
Because this data protection mode prioritizes data protection over primary database
availability, Oracle recommends that a minimum of two standby databases be used to
protect a primary database that runs in maximum protection mode to prevent a single
standby database failure from causing the primary database to shut down.

[DATA LOSS] I closed the Tab Groups and all my tabs dissapeared. How can I recover the tabs in Firefox 26? Would you please just delete this feature?

A slip of the mouse in trying to return to the left-most tab caused the tab groups feature to take over the window. I completely failed to comprehend what I was looking at and closed the thing by clicking the x because I damn sure didn't want what I was looking at. Undo close group? Of course not, I didn't want a group in the first place. Hey! My tabs are completely gone now! So in just a few steps all of which seemed innocent, I have lost all but ten of the tabs that were open, and those were only the most recent ten (and actually older tabs would have been more valueable than newer so insult on top of injury).
I don't think increasing the number of undoable tab closures is the answer. I think getting rid of the tab groups feature all together is the best way to go. I seem to have lost all the tabs I had open, irretrievably, and some of them had been open for WEEKS so they can't be reopened from history.
The tab groups feature is a data loss bug. Please remove it from the UX completely. If you have to figure out a way to grandfather people who actually have a tab group, fine but don't further vex me with it, please.
The reason this catastrophe has occurred is that your feature, was so discoverable that I activated it by mistake, and the UI after that had to be learned on the spot, yet was too complicated to learn. You really should withdraw it until you can figure out how to keep the UI for it from causing data loss such as I have experienced this morning.
Also, there may be other questions on this feature which are from a certain point of view the same as this one. It's hard for me to tell for sure. None of them had a true resolution so that's why I posted this one, also I'm seeking a specific fix, removal of the offending feature.
Why remove the feature? Because if I allow in my discussion the possibility of retaining it, it will stick around in its present and dangerous form until your team is done bikeshedding the new form it should take. Instead I want you to delete the feature and then require its champion to convince you that a new incarnation won't cause data loss before you allow it back in.
Fellow users, if you know of a way to recover all 50 lost tabs from an "undo close tab group incident", I would be grateful for that advice, but I would still believe the feature should be deleted. Some of the tabs have been retained for months so digging them out of the history is not practical.

I am not 100% certain but I am fairly sure development of this tab feature has ceased and it is likely to be deprecated. I am even less sure what the replacement will be.

I have not tried this and am not even using Windows at present but the tabs groups are stored as entries in the sessionstore.js files. Firefox has such a file plus sometimes numbered copies and a backup copy. Firefox will have re-writen these files but I suppose there is a posibility the Windows OS may have kept copies.

** Firefox Button -> Help -> Troubleshooting [open profile] (or some thing similar) is one method of locating the profile.
Find and backup any current sessionstore.js file. Consider also bookmark or otherwise recording anything you have open. Now find any previous versions and try putting them in Firefox's profile before restarting it.
