How do I back up a windows 7 PC With time machine?

I am thinking of purchasing a time capsule, and i want to know if there is any easy way to back up to my windows 7 PC as well as to my Mac

You can't backup a windows PC with Time Machine, as it works only on a Mac.  But you can use  Windows backup software which can handle network drives such as Time Capsule.

TC/TM do not support backing up NTFS file systems. Use a separate NTFS-formatted external disk (USB/Firewire/Thunderbolt) and configure it as a Windows Backup/Restore destination. W8+ also supports File History.

Can you see the TC disk in win7?
If not, you need to setup the TC correctly. ie use all SMB compatible names.. not apple names with spaces and apostrophes. Short, no spaces, pure alphanumeric.
On the file sharing page set the correct workgroup, generally WORKGROUP.
And if you can set the guest account on, to read and write.. makes life easier.
In the windows computer load airport utility for win7. That includes bonjour for windows and access agent to the disk. This is not 100% essential but makes things easier.
    Open windows explorer and type
\\TCname or \\TCIPaddress into the address bar.. replacing that obviously with actual name or IP.
Now apple do not provide backup software for windows. And win7 home editions cannot backup to network drives.. pro and ultimate can.. thanks bill for product differentiation.. no matter, MSbackup is the worst possible backup utility ever made. There are literally hundreds of backup softwares available for windows.. 99% of them can do network backups. Even on home editions. Buy or try one you download.
I use Macrium Reflect.. free to do disk backup.. you will have to pay for it to do incrementals.
Genie Time Line has a Time Machine like look about it.. but is expensive.
Look up reviews of suitable windows backups. Or use robocopy and script it.

Will time capsule back up the machine and the hard drive that is plugged into the machine?
Yes, if the hard drive with the video files is formatted correctly for Mac
On the Mac with the hard drive connected....click on the Time Machine "clock" icon at the top of the screen
    Click Time Machine Preferences
    Click Options
Here you will see a list of items that have been excluded from backups
Click the name of the hard drive to highlight it
Click the - (minus) button at the bottom of the list to remove the hard drive from the list of excluded items
The hard drive will now be backed up with your Mac on the next pass that Time Machine makes

  • How can you configure a WD external to work with Time Machine??

I have an 1TB external WD MyBook drive that is connected to my network through my Linksys wireless router and am trying to figure out how to format the drive to use with Time Machine.
I currently use the drive to store files from both my PC and my MacBook but can't seem to select the drive to use with Time Machine. I figured that I could just format the drive through the Disk Utility program, but the drive doesn't show up in Disk Utility. This may be because it is a drive connected through my router and not directly to my MacBook?!
    Here are a few questions...
Any ideas on how to format the drive so it will work with Time Machine?
Once formatted to use with TM, can I still use the drive to store other files from both my Mac and PC? or do I need to partition for this??
Is it possible to set up an automatic backup schedule that will happen via my home wireless connection?
    Thanks in advance,
    Todd.

You cannot use the drive with TM as you have it set up. TM will not work with a networked drive except a Time Capsule or a USB drive connected to an Airport Extreme Base Station (current version.)
If you wish to use this drive for TM backups it must be connected directly to the computer. Other computers on the network can access the drive for TM backups if you turn on file sharing for the drive (select drive, press COMMAND-I, check the box labeled "Shared Folder," click on the Enable button.) The shared drive will have to be mounted on the other computers in order for them to use it as a TM backup drive.

  • Back up an external hard drive with time machine

Hello, I have an xserve with a lacie that houses all of our data and emails.  Does anyone have suggestions on how to backup the Lacie?  There is about 3.7TB of data on the Lacie.
Our time machine backups only backup the actual server.  Is there a way for it to capture the data on the Lacie as well?
    Thanks!

If this is a network device, you can't back it up with Time Machine. If it's directly attached, and in Mac OS format, delete it from the exclusion list in the Time Machine preference pane.

  • Accessing back-ups on external hard-drive with Time Machine.

    Hi guys,
I hope someone can help me with this problem. I am a novice at this so please be patient and forgive my ignorance.
I backed up the internal hard-drive of my '06 iMac onto an external Iomega 500GB hard-drive using Time Machine.
A couple of weeks later the internal hard-drive of my iMac fried and I got the " grey screen of death ".
Now I have the external hard-drive connected to my '06 MacBook.
There is 300GB of data on the external hard-drive. There is only 50GB of space available on my MacBook.
I would like to access my iPhoto on the external hard-drive but when I click on the iPhoto icon in Time Machine, I get "error code 10657 ".
I am NOT trying to do a full restore of the back-up onto the MacBook because :
    1. There is not enough space available on the MacBook and
    2. I will do a full restore when I have bought and installed a new bigger hard-drive into the iMac.
So, I guess my question is this : Is it possible for me to access my iPhoto on the external hard-drive using my MacBook without doing a complete transfer and if so, how ?
    Thanking you in advance,
    Sean.

If this is a network device, you can't back it up with Time Machine. If it's directly attached, and in Mac OS format, delete it from the exclusion list in the Time Machine preference pane.

  • Backing up an external hard drive with time Machine

I backed up my internal disk with Time Machine, but I can not back up an external drive that I use for my media. I see the drive in the options part of Time Machine system preferences, but the minus sign to take it off of the "do not back up these drives" is blanked out. Any suggestions?

I successfully backed up the contents of an external hard drive, but the next time Time Machine did a backup, I didn't happen to have that drive connected, so Time Machine said it couldn't find it and deleted the existing backup. Is there any way to get it to keep the backup? The drive I want to back up is only used occasionally (naturally, anything I use more frequently is on my Mac) and I don't want to have to plug in both hard drives every time I want to run a backup, only to risk losing all of that history if I ever accidentally plug in only the backup drive. But I do want to keep Time Machine backups of that drive because it contains my iPhoto Library.

  • How do I install an exterior HD to work with Time machine?

How do I install an exterior hard drive for use with Time Machine?

Plug it in. Time Machine will ask you if you want to use the drive with it, and if you do, it'll reformat the drive if needed.

  • HT1175 How do I back up an external hard drive to time machine?

All my work is backed up on an external hard drive. I tried plugging the hard drive directly into the time capsule but I can't see the disk in the time machine preferences. Am I doing the right thing? Thank you in advance for your help.

You will not see it if the TC cannot see it.. have you looked for it.
And that is the wrong place anyway.. to include it in the backup.. open the time machine preferences with the external drive plugged into the computer .. not the TC to include it, make sure it is not excluded.

  • How to make a bootable 10.6 in hd with time machine back up?

    i have:
    - not so stable internal hd
    - 10.6 retail OS disc
    - an external hd that is a time machine back up of the internal hd
can I make a bootable OS copy in the external hd without erasing the time machine back up In it?
    macbook 2007

You would be better off with 2 external drives. If you put a bootable clone on the existing drive and the drive fails, you have lost both your backups. I would get a larger 2nd external, copy the Time Machine backup to it, erase and reformat the 1st external, and then put CCC clone there. You can copy the backup using Disk Utility Restore tab.
Stuffing 2 backups on a 120 GB drive would be a bit of a pinch.
Clone  - Carbon Copy Cloner          (Often recommended as it has more features than some others)
    Clone – Data Backup
    Clone – Deja Vu
    Clone  - SuperDuper
    Clone - Synk
Clone Software – 6 Applications Tested

  • What size should external back-up drive be for use with Time Machine?

I am very new to Macs.
My iMac has a 500GB hard disc - not much on it yet.
I want to back the hard disc up daily and automatically to an external hard drive using Time Machine. So that I could restore everything if the iMac failed.
    1. Does the external hard drive that I buy need to be larger than the iMac's hard disc, e.g 1Tb? Or is 500Gb enough in my case?
    2. Should it be pre-formatted for Mac when I buy it? Or do I have to do this?
    3. Should it use firewire or USB?
    4. Presumably I need to leave the external drive plugged in all the time? Or will this stop the iMac from switching on and off?
I really want the easiest solution possible as I am not very techie and I want the minimum amount of fiddling with it. So I am confused between whether to choose a Western Digital My Book Office edition or Studio edition, 500Gb or 1TB, firewire or USB, or maybe a Lacie?
    Would be grateful for advice.
    Thanks very much.

Welcome to the Apple forums. If you have a 500G external disk, that will work fine for quite a while with hourly, daily and weekly backups, but sooner or later it will fill up, but then it begins to delete weekly backups. The same will happen with whichever size of external disk you buy: sooner or later. . . . Nonetheless, that disk will be fine for most purposes. I have 250G and use a 200G partition for my MacBook Pro and while that was fine, it tends to delete weekly backups so I have about 6 months of backups stored. (I also make other backups of all data).
It may be preformatted, but that is unlikely. Use Disk Utility (in Applications>Utilities) and use MacOS Extended, which is selected in the Partition tab (you do this even if you only use a single partition).
The system works with either Firewire or USB 2..
You do not need to leave it in all the time. If it is connected, it will make the backups, if not, nothing will happen and it will indicate that the next backup will occur when the disk is attached. To disconnect, you would highlight the disk in a Finder panel and press the Eject icon (not while TM is running of course) then disconnect the cable.
I am not able to suggest which disk is best, although my LaCie one has not missed a beat. Others may have a different idea. Try a Google search with the disk manufacturer's name and "problems" or somesuch. No disk is perfect of course.

I was doing that and I wanted something on Sept 18 and I shut it off on 8/20 and never turned it back on. So that will work but you have to remember to turn it it. There should almmost be an option somewhere to check that when the system goes to sleep, turn on Time Machine. All my PC back-up stuff has that option. Surprised TM doesn't. If raising the memory will do it it seems to cheap enough. Will that help you think. And I did just reboot my machine yesrday so it is pretty clean:).

  • How can I recover images deleted from my vault with Time Machine

My vault died and with it one of my projects within the vault. The other images plus some new ones are in the vault ok but I am slightly worried about reinstating my Aperture library and not just focusing on the missing project and images. BUT there appears to be no way of seeing the files within the Aperture library. I would welcome some advice about this. Thanks

This must be a tough one, I can actually hear the birds chirping
