If you're new to this, I suggest you read the manual:

  • How do I back up my last Time Machine backup forever...?

    Hello everyone!
I just backed up my iMac with Time Machine on Lion OSX and I did a clean install. There are a lot of files I don't want to reinstall on my iMac but I would like to keep them just in case. Now, if I run Time Machine on the new "empty" iMac, it'll erase everything and I will lose my old back up (right?)... In any case, I just need to avoid the new back up to override the old one I want to keep but I want to keep using Time Machine on the clean iMac. I tried to lock the backup folder but I don't want to risk it if that is not the way to do it. Should I just drag and drop the backup file I want to keep on another external hard drive? Hope this all makes sense and thanks for any help you may bring!

The problem is that I don't want to override the old time machine backup... plus, I want to use the hard drive the old back up is on. It's a new 2TB drive with plenty of space left and it'd be a waste to just set it aside, you know? I tried to copy the time machine backup from disk utility but it's giving me this error: Not enough space on /dev/disk3s2 to restore. Any ideas? Thanks Csound1!

  • How Do I Back Up and Older Time Machine?

I just got a new 3 Gig HD because I ran out of room with my old Time Machine HD. I realize that I have not only my "current" Time Machine back-up but I have an older one on a third HD ... besides four other HD's.
Do I just have the new HD back-up EVERYTHING including the two old Time Machines, or ... ?
Will it "sort" everything out or will I end up with three copies of some things (which would overflow my new HD). I'm assuming that the oldest Time Machine might have items that aren't on the 2nd Time Machine, because I didn't ask this question when I got the 2nd Time Machine HD

Who knows how long one should keep ones back-ups ... they MAY contain family photos, etc?
Not if the originals are still on your system.
When Time Machine deletes an old backup, it only deletes its copies of things that appear only on that backup, so were likely deleted or changed long ago.
If you want to "archive" things, then delete the originals from your system, either use a different backup app, or make a couple of copies of the archived data and store it in different places.

  • How can I back up stuff on Time Machine?

The hard drive / start up disk on my macbook pro is almost full.  I have deleted as much as I can, and it's time to start storing stuff on an external hard drive.  I have a folder full of home videos, and I thought that would be the perfect thing to store on my time machine and delete from my computer.  I dragged one video to the time machine and then once it transfered I deleted it from the folder.  When I went to empty the trash, it wouldn't delete because it was "in use."
So, how do I transfer documents / photos / videos onto my time machine so that I can delete them from my computer?

If u want to backup ur hard drive contents just follow this link: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427. Though as u said u want to back up just ur videos so do this. Format ur hard drive using disk utility to FAT32 then just copy ur files over

  • ITunes library is on external hd.  how do i back it up using Time Machine?

I'm saving my iTunes library to an external library since I'll go way over the 500GB of my Mac mini.  How do I back up the iTunes library using Time Machine? Can I back it up on the external same hard drive?  AppleCare had me partition the drive into 2 partitions.  1 for Time machine and 1 for iTunes library.  Can I back up the library to the other partition?
    Thanks

    1. Open the Time Machine pane of System Preferences and set it not to exclude that partition.
    2. Yes, but you shouldn't. If the drive fails, it'll wipe both out.

  • How do I restore my iphone from Time Machine?

Today, I wiped my computer clean to download a new OS X. I also just got a new iphone.
Is there a way to restore a backup of an iphone from before the computer was wiped using Time Machine?
I don't want to restore all of the iTunes music.
    I already tried
    ~user/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup
Once I got to Application Support there was no MobileSync.

I guess if you find where the backup is on the time machine and copied the file to the right location where itunes looks for the backup file you could use itunes to do the restore from the right backup for you

  • How do I get old emails from Time Machine into a new Mail?

I have (I hope) email data in Time machine as of April 8  which I can't figure out how to get into my newly reinstalled version of Mail.
I took over my brother-in-law's iMac on April 8, and closed his User ID, saving it in a .dmg file.  Now that he has a new computer, he would like his old emails, so I reactivated his user ID, and reinstalled his email accounts in Mail as of May 27.  When I look at the Time Machine Backups drive, there is a data folder for April 8, but when I open my newly re-installed Mail and click on Time Machine it only goes back to May 27.
Is there a way to get at the April 8 data?
    Thanks,
    jrguest1

I set up an admin account for myself, logged on to it, and then followed the procedure in the help file to delete his account, saving it as a .dmg file.  Then, when he asked for his old emails, I followed the procedure in the help file to restore a deleted user account and copied the contents of the .dmg into it.
I'm not entirely confident I got the restoration sequence right, since I find the order of steps in the help file confusing. But everything except the Mail data seems to be recovered.
Another source of trouble may be the email account settings:  when I opened Mail under his log-on, there were no accounts set up: I recreated them using his email address and password, but Mail may well be treating these as new accounts, rather than re-opened old accounts.
    Thanks, John

  • How do I restore iCloud mailboxes from Time Machine without losing new mail?

This morning when I opened my laptop and checked my email, Apple Mail decided to flag every single email in my three separate Apple-related accounts ([email protected],[email protected], and [email protected])—some 14,500+ emails total. None of the emails in my comcast or yahoo accounts were affected. Of course, each of the three accounts is set to download copies to my laptop as well as keep them on the server, so now all of those emails are flagged across the board—on my iMac, my iPhone, my iPad mini as well as my laptop. Yay. Since some of the emails were actually flagged intentionally by me over time, I don't want to just unflag everything or I'll lose my flags as well as the ones spontaneously generated this morning.
    My questions are:
    1) If I use a Time Machine backup from last night to restore the three affected mailboxes, will iCloud accept them as the de facto most up-to-date versions, or do I still have to go through some complicated process in order to convince the cloud that the 14,500+ unflagged emails don't then need to be "updated" to flagged status?
    2) More importantly, will the cloud still sync properly so that I still get all of the emails that came since last night? I'm fine if the absence of the more recent emails from the "new" (actually older TM) mailboxes is interpreted as though they've been deleted, since my preferences are set to keep deleted email on the server for a month. But it would be a problem if those emails simply disappear into the ether.
    3) Does anyone have any idea what might have caused the random flagging in the first place and/or suggestions for keeping it from happening in the future?
I remember vaguely that in the early days of Time Machine, restoring iCloud mailboxes was a complicated process in order to trick the cloud into accepting the Time Machine backup as the latest and greatest version. I take it that's no longer such a tricky proposition nowadays, since a search of Apple's knowledge base yielded little information on it. I'd appreciate some confirmation on that, however, so I know what to expect after the restore.
    Thanks!
I'm going to try cross-posting this issue in both the iCloud and Time Machine forums since it's some of both. Apologies in advance if that causes confusion.

  • Restore iPhone from Time Machine in Lion

I did a clean install of Lion with only restoring my user settings from Time Machine (Snow Leopard). Now I want to sync my iPhone, but it deletes everything.
So I want to sync it with a backup from Time Machine. I found the files in user/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup
But this location doesn't exist at all in Lion! Even worse, user/Library doesn't exist!
So does anybody know how I can restore my iPhone from Time Machine in Lion? Many thanks in advance!

I just restored my desktop calendar by unhiding the library. Then opened another window and put Time Machine in the dock. That way when I started Time Machine the hidden folder stayed open. Then it was just a matter of going back far enough before iCloud deleted stuff. But lots of things were duplicated because they are on both calendars.

Reboot the TC.. Sometimes you need to reboot the whole network.
This is what comes of Lion and then made worse in Mountain Lion of Apple not spending enough time to fix the bugs.
    Read C12 in pondini.

C17 can be related I think.

If you want to use Time Machine to recover the contents of one of its a backups to a new drive, follow the instructions in Mac OS X 10.6: Recovering your entire system. Note that you must select the "Restore System From Backup" option from the Utilities menu of the Installer disc to do this.
Also note that if you are transferring files to a hard drive to be used with a different computer, you should use Migration Assistant instead. This intentionally will not copy everything because some settings, applications, etc. are not compatible computer-to-computer. Migration Assistant will copy everything that is.
