How do I back up iPhoto to a zip drive?

I just bought a 16gb flash drive and would like to back up (copy, not completely move) the photos from iPhoto so I have another copy of them. I do have Time Machine also, but I want to put my pictures on a flash drive also and them store elsewhere.
Also, how do I figure out the size of my Iphoto library and if it will all fit on my zip drive?

Wow, my Iphoto library is 70gb, apparently I underestimated when I bought a 16gb zip drive! Is there anything else besides a zip drive that you would recommend using to back up my photos for offsite storage? Should I just go get an external drive, plug it in and then copy to that?
I mentioned that I have Time Machine but I am paranoid and want to have offsite storage as well.
Also, when I drag my iphoto library icon from finder to the eternal drive, that will only copy it, right? I don't want to completely move it and leave no pictures on my computer.

Buy yourself a portable hard drive from WD or the like. It should have a capacity at least twice that of your machine hard drive. Then follow the instructions that come with it; it is quite straightforward.
I have a similar machine to you by the sound of it. After the initial back up, it is just a matter of topping up every couple of months or so, plus whenever you do to back up any major upgrade.
A portable one is good because you can store it with relatives when not in use which gives protection in the case of fire or theft.
I use two backups. One, an external HD permanently connected for my Time Machine and the second, a portable for the reasons I gave.

How do I back up iPhoto 9.6 content on DVD

I have a Time Capsule but sadly it is in another country and now my macbook needs to be replaced directly via Apple at the local store here.
To prevent access to all my childrens photos aside from all other financial account info etc i want to back the photos all up myself and just erase the macbook.
I do not have access to the Time Capsule, so have about 10,000 photos in iPhoto 9.6 which i think is the latest version.
How do i back up them all up to DVD? I cannot see any burn option.
And if i should be backing all my photos up NOT from IPhoto but from some other location, where do I find them on the macbook in finder....? I only see folders there that then open iPhoto so have not made any progress.

It might be prudent for you go purchase a portable external hard drive and clone your entire iPhoto library to it before you erase your Macbook. Then with your new Macbook you can use the Migration Assistant to restore your files back to the new Mac.
Otherwise you'll need to export all of your events to the desktop via File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu option with Kind = Original and Subfolder format = Event title. Then burn the folder to the DVDs. Personally, the time and effort required to burn all of your Event folders and other documents to disks and then copy them back would overshadow the cost of an EHD. The demo version of Carbon Copy Cloner can be used to clone your drive to the EHD.

Backing up iphoto running from external drive

After transferring the iphoto library to a second external drive (other than the one being used to backup the internal drive with Time Machine), is there a way to backup the second drive with Time Machine while still continuing to backup the internal drive? To clarify, I would be running iphoto off of an external drive to free up space on the internal drive but since Time Machine is backing up my internal drive how do I now get it to also back up iphoto since it is now running off of the external drive?

That is really a time machine question rather than an iPhoto question
I found that by default TM was backing up everything - internal drive and two external volumes - I simply went tot he TM preferences and told it not to backup my extrenal volumes which are clones of my internal drive - launch TM and look at that it shows - I think you will find it is backing up your external drives

I share the Mac iPhotos folder \\COUNTERPWN\Pictures\iPhoto Library.photolibrary\Masters and create a shortcut on my windows desktop. If you want you can use Microsoft Synctoy and run it whenever you want to back them up. Kind of reverse order, instead of going from Mac to Windows to backup, go from Windows to Mac and back again. lol hope that made sense.
Just make sure you have File Sharing selected and Windows Sharing on in prefrence for you iPhoto folder.

Wen doing the following User>Pictures I try to drag iphoto library onto my desktop Seagate drive icon. Nothing happens. The files do not copy onto the external drive.

It should not be a problem. How is the drive formatted?
Select the Drive in Finder, then Get Info (cmd-i).

By backing up the Library. That backs up everything.
Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store

Once the photos are out of iPhoto they will be viewed by the Finder sorted by alphanumerically name or chronologically by date depending on how the view is setup for the Finder. So here's how to get what you want;
1 - assemble the photos in an album named for the vacation and sort manually.
2 - select the album and use the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu option.
3 - Set Kind = Original (if you want the original unedited version) or Currnet (if you want the edited version).
4 - select File Name = Album name with number:
5 - this will give you the files named as Album-01.jpg, Album-02.jpg, etc which will be sorted in that order in the Finder.

Thanks - I had a look and they are both there on my external HD, the same name, size and date as on my computer, so that's ok, I must be backing them up as you say.
But, they don't have the same icons - the XML file is described as a "REALbasic XML project" instead of "Text document", while the iTunes Library file doesn't have the iTunes logo, and is described simply as "Document" and not "iTunes Database File". Does that matter? Will it matter if I ever need to restore from them?

just move your iPhoto library to the extrnal drive being sure it is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) -
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

I’ve been looking for a Automator application that does this for quite a while now.
Basically I want to have an Automator application that saves a copy of my iPhoto pictures in a folder, inside Finder. Like a backup. Later on, I can save those “folders and files” on my external hard drive.
What I want it to do is this:
1) Export photos from a selected Album or Event on iPhoto. Using as title: “Event name” – “number” (I mean the number of the file: 1, 2, 3 …)
2) Save them in a folder in Finder that I want.
3) Organize the photos in different folders, the same way they are in iPhoto.
The idea I had, was that it would do this automatically every time I launch iPhoto, as if it was synchronizing the photos into that folder.
And then, every time I connect my hard drive, it copies these “real” folders into my hard drive.
Is that possible? If yes, could you help me creating it, or tell me how I can do so myself, or where to download something like it?

There are some wireless external hard drives that can be used with the iPad.
The Kingston Wi-Drive, which costs $50 for the 16 Gigabyte, and then $30 more for every 16 gigs more.
