How do I back-up my iPhone 4?

I've had a iPhone 4 for quite a while now and the only time it was ever plugged into a computer was when I bought it. However since then we have got a new laptop. I need to update the software on my phone and due to the old software, I cant choose the option to update it on the phone itself so I'm guessing I would need to plug it into the laptop? What I am asking is how can I plug my phone into a new laptop without losing my photos and contacts? Is there some sort of way I can back it up before I plug it in or something? Any help would be much appreciated xx

You can use iCloud to backup your iPhone to the iCloud servers automatically. Is that what you mean?
Just go to settings -> iCloud
Sign in with your apple I'd and activate iCloud backup.

How do I back up my iphone to an external hard drive attached to my pc and not my pc? My disk on my pc is almost full and even though I selected the external hard drive it still seems to try to back it up to my computer, then says I don't have sufficient storage. I cahnged my folder under preferences to the External Drive folder.

I do not use a Windows machine, have a Windows Vista Dell I rarely startup now. But, from what I remember with Win boxes is, you will have to create on the external hard drive a file system like that one iTunes normally uses, and then in the iTunes preferences or control panel edit the location for the storage to specify the name of the external hard drive, or its letter code, with the name of that file system you created on the exernal drive.
I would also move all of the files from the internal file system to the external since you have now told iTunes that is where they are...before deleting from the internal drive, test iTunes to see that it goes where you want it to go.

Try backing it up to your computer with iTunes. Connect it to your computer, open iTunes, click on the name of the phone in iTunes, go to the Summary tab of your iTunes sync settings and click Back Up Now. I backed up my iPhone, named it and then restored it to the factory settings. When I went back and right clicked on the phone to "restore from backup", the backup I had just made was not there. Only a backup from September. Now, I've lost everything since September, that was on my phone. I was wondering what I did wrong and how to properly back up the iPhone for future reference. Does it only save 2 backups? I just am not sure why it didn't save my most recent backup, and rather, saved one from September. Sad, I lost a lot of important texts, numbers, notes and pictures. All my devices have the same apple ID and I have a PC with windows 8.
I backed up an iphone 5s back in February. Now I want to back up this iphone 6 that I have borrowed from work so I can restore this one on to my own new iphone 6 if that makes sense. But when I connect the borrowed iphone it just asks me do I want to restore it from the 5s back up or as a new device like this:

How do I back up my iPhone 5s when iTunes doesn't recognize my phone?

I haven't backed up my iPhone 5s for a couple of months and I received a message that my data exceeds iCloud storage. The other day I connected my phone to my iMac and pulled up iTunes and a screen popped up asking me if this was a new phone! I'm afraid to proceed because I'm guessing I will lose all of my "Notes" and pictures that exceeded the storage limit on iCloud. Any suggestions as to how I can back up my phone and not lose information stored on my phone?
One more note, I haven't been able to update to the lates IOS version 7.1 because it needs 2.5GB of storage and I want to back up before I make space available.

Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the home button together until the apple logo appears (ignore the ON/OFF slider) then let both buttons go and wait for device to restart (no data will be lost).
