Use iCloud
iCloud Backup provides an easy and reliable backup solution for customers who want to back up their iOS devices wirelessly and automatically.
Back up to iCloud
If you're using iCloud, it can automatically back up your data if you've chosen this option. You can verify your iCloud backup and make sure that it's up to date by following these steps:
Tap Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup.
Turn on iCloud Backup if it's off.
Tap Back Up Now.
Restore from an iCloud backup
If you have a new iOS device, or if you need to restore your iOS device to resolve an issue, follow these steps.
Follow the initial steps in the iOS Setup Assistant (select your language, and so on).
Select Restore from iCloud Backup when the assistant asks you to set up your iPhone (or other iOS device).
Select the backup you created earlier.
You can restore a backup only by using the iOS Setup Assistant. If you've already set up your device, you can erase all current content to go through the iOS Setup Assistant again. Tap Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. Do this only if you already have a backup, because this step will remove all current content from your device.
Use iTunes
You can use iTunes to back up and restore your content on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. Note that iTunes and iOS do not support installing backups of newer versions of iOS onto devices using earlier versions of iOS.
Back up
To back up the content on your iOS device, follow these steps:
Make sure your computer has the latest version of iTunes.
Connect your iOS device to your computer.
Choose File > Devices > Back up.
If you're using iTunes 10.7 or earlier, right-click the device from the list and choose Backup Now.
You can also back up by syncing your iOS device with your computer. When you use iTunes to sync, backing up is the first step.To verify that the backup finished successfully, open iTunes Preferences and select the Devices tab. You'll see the name of the device along with the date and time iTunes created the backup.
Restore from a backup
If you have a new iOS device, or if you need to restore your device to resolve an issue, follow these steps:
Connect your iOS device to the computer that has your backup.
Make sure this computer has the latest version of iTunes.
Choose File > Devices > Restore from Back up.
If you're using iTunes 10.7 or earlier, right-click the device from the list and choose Restore from Backup.
Apple Internal Comments
If you're troubleshooting an iCloud issue and need to back up the device, consider making a secondary backup with iTunes.
iTunes and iCloud both create a date- and time-stamped backup when you select "Restore from the back up of…" or "Restore as New." iTunes retains these backups; see iTunes: About iOS backups for more details. For iCloud backup details and steps to manage, see iCloud: Managing your iCloud storage.
To back up all personal data and content, follow this article (or send it to the customer): How to back up your data and set up as a new device.

I work for Apple, trust me people do not have a clue how to find these thing's. All the places I put this the more people can be helped.

  • How do i back up my iphone to an external hard drive and not my computer

How do I back up my iphone to an external hard drive attached to my pc and not my pc?  My disk on my pc is almost full and even though I selected the external hard drive it still seems to try to back it up to my computer, then says I don't have sufficient storage.  I cahnged my folder under preferences to the External Drive folder.

This is where iTunes stores backups for different operating systems: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4946
I do not use a Windows machine, have a Windows Vista Dell I rarely startup now.  But, from what I remember with Win boxes is, you will have to create on the external hard drive a file system like that one iTunes normally uses, and then in the iTunes preferences or control panel edit the location for the storage to specify the name of the external hard drive, or its letter code, with the name of that file system you created on the exernal drive.
I would also move all of the files from the internal file system to the external since you have now told iTunes that is where they are...before deleting from the internal drive, test iTunes to see that it goes where you want it to go.

Try backing it up to your computer with iTunes.  Connect it to your computer, open iTunes, click on the name of the phone in iTunes, go to the Summary tab of your iTunes sync settings and click Back Up Now.  Also go to File>Devices>Transfer Purchases to transfer you apps and other purchased media to your iTunes library.

  • How to properly back up the iPhone (I clearly did it wrong)

I backed up my iPhone, named it and then restored it to the factory settings. When I went back and right clicked on the phone to "restore from backup", the backup I had just made was not there. Only a backup from September. Now, I've lost everything since September, that was on my phone. I was wondering what I did wrong and how to properly back up the iPhone for future reference. Does it only save 2 backups? I just am not sure why it didn't save my most recent backup, and rather, saved one from September. Sad, I lost a lot of important texts, numbers, notes and pictures. Thanks for any help!

  • How do I back up multiple iphones to one itunes account

I'm sure this is possible, I've seen it where there are numerous back ups listed on itunes for different devices, and how you can hover over each to see the IMEI and serial number etc.

I backed up an iphone 5s back in February. Now I want to back up this iphone 6 that I have borrowed from work so I can restore this one on to my own new iphone 6 if that makes sense. But when I connect the borrowed iphone it just asks me do I want to restore it from the 5s back up or as a new device like this:
If I press new phone will it reset everything that is already on the phone I borrowed? Or will it then allow me past this screen so i can set up a separate back up?

  • How do I back up my iPhone 5s when iTunes doesn't recognize my phone?

I haven't backed up my iPhone 5s for a couple of months and I received a message that my data exceeds iCloud storage.  The other day I connected my phone to my iMac and pulled up iTunes and a screen popped up asking me if this was a new phone!  I'm afraid to proceed because I'm guessing I will lose all of my "Notes" and pictures that exceeded the storage limit on iCloud.  Any suggestions as to how I can back up my phone and not lose information stored on my phone?
One more note, I haven't been able to update to the lates IOS version 7.1 because it needs 2.5GB of storage and I want to back up before I make space available.
    Thank you so much!!

    try also
    RESET DEVICE
Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the home button together until the apple logo appears (ignore the ON/OFF slider) then let both buttons go and wait for device to restart (no data will be lost).
