How do I back up my iPod to an external drive?

I need to back up my iPod and then recover all the info once I restore it.  Having problems and don't want to lose any of my books/songs/movies.  I have an external tetra drive that I am using for the back up.

See this wonderful guide from another forum member turingtest2 on how to extract content from your iPod back onto your PC/Mac and into iTunes.

  • How do I back-up Itunes music onto an external drive?

I wanted to know how I can back up my Itunes onto an external drive. I tried to back up but it will take about 9 discs to burn it onto. Can;t I just drop and drag all the songs onto an external drive?

"Choose Consolidate Library from the Library section of the File menu in iTunes".
I started this process and a screen popped up advising me this was irreversible and was I sure I wanted to do it. I clicked no until I could get further advice. If I do this, what is the outcome/consequences and why would they warn me?

There is no way to directly back up the music straight from the iPod to an external HDD. You'll have to move the music from your computer to an external HDD.
Here are a couple articles that will assist you with backing up.

Connect it and either set up Time Machine or use a product such as the Disk Utility, Carbon Copy Cloner, or SuperDuper to create a bootable clone on it.

  • How do I back up my ipod to a usb drive?

I live out of town and finally got to a mac store last week and the guy said the best he could do was reset my ipod and see if the camera that's broken on the front would work without my settings but he realized I would need it for the car ride back home, so I was wondering if anyone knew how to backup onto usb drives? It's a 64 gig ipod and I don't have a lot of space on any 1 of my 3 computers.... Also, if anyone knows how to fix my front camera without having to send it in, I'd appriciate it since sending it in might cost me nearly $200 due to bad warrenty.... Thank you for any help.

The iPod can be backed up to a computer using iTunes. Alteritvley if the iPad is running iOS 5; you could try backing up to iCloud.
More info about iCloud Backup can be found in iCloud: Backup and restore overview.
iTunes: About iOS backups, outlines what iTunes can backup from an iPhone. (the list of what itunes backsup is longer.)

  • How can you back up your ipod onto your external hard drive that you're using in time machine?

I just bought an external hard drive and want to put my ipod music on it but can't figure out how.  My ipod has music that my itunes library on my computer doesn't have.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would also suggest you get a 2nd, much larger hard drive, partition it if desired, move your data to it, and start a 2nd Time Machine backup on it. You can set Time Machine to alternate between the 2 drives by adding the new drive to System Preferences/Time Machine. If you want to make a copy of your current backup on the new drive, you can do that using the Disk Utility Restore tab. If you chose to do that, make the copy first since using the Restore tab erases all data on the drive or the partition.

  • How do I back up my iPhone to an external drive?

I don't have enough space on my MAC to back up a 64G iPhone.    Is there a way to change the path that ITunes backs up to in order to back up to an ex
    OR
Is there a way to select backing up everything except photos?  I've already backed them up separately.
    Thanks!

    Hi OneMoreEvent,
No, unfortunately the backup path cannot be changed and the settings on your device only allow for excluding what you don't want to include in a backup via iCloud (Settings > iCloud > Storage > Manage Storage > Backups (Select your Device) > Choose the data you want to backup.
    With kind regards,

  • How can I back up mail boxes to an external drive (not using Time Machine)?

I recently lost all of my mailboxes when switching from Mavericks back to Mountain Lion; I still have all of my emails, just without the mailboxes I'd created over the past 6 years to organize these emails.  The files that control organization information for Mail, iPhoto, and iTunes must not be obvious.  The 2 Apple "Geniuses" who wiped my computer after assuring me I'd backed up everything I needed clearly didn't think of mailboxes (Mail), events and albums (iPhoto), and playlists and ratings (iTunes) -- lost all of those.  Would greatly appreciate it if someone could tell me where to find the organizational files for Mail that contain the "smart" and regular mailboxes.  Thank you!

Are you referring to mailboxes as in different email domain providers (AOL, Yahoo, GMail, etc???)
Or are you referring to mailboxes as in archived folders with various messages in each?
If the latter, have you considered moving it all to iCloud and not storing anything locally?
I have my folders/boxes in iCloud and dont' botehr with storing anything locally anymore. Too much pain to worry about saving the mailboxes on a USB stick any time you reinstall your OS X.
Moreover ,the new versions always needed to be updated after you imported them back into Mail app.
    Just a thought....
Unless you have more than 5GB of mail stored, I woudl consider moving it to iCloud once and for all.

  • How do I back up my iMovie to an external drive?

I am trying to copy my movies from my Sony Camcorder through iMovie to save on to an external drive.
When I have a Passport drive connected to my iMac 7 (24 inch) - iMovie 11 will not recognize it. Does it have to be a specific Apple drive?
    Using Lion with 6gb memory
    Thank you

First thing, Make sure your external hard drive is formatted as a Mac OS Extended hard drive. To find out, go to the desktop hold down the Control Key and click on the Hard drive icon. Choose > Get Info
If it isn't already formatted that way you will want to erase the hard drive using Disk Utility which is in the Applications > Utilities folder on your Macintosh's hard drive.
Once the hard drive has been reformatted, go to View Menu > Group Events by Disk
This will allow you to see you hard drive in the Events Library and allow you to drag items there. Since you haven't started editing yet, just Move the Events to the External Harddrive. Also, the hard drive will also appear in the list at the top Project Library too. If you want to copy a Project to the hard drive, drag it from where it is now in the Project Library to the hard drive icon. A dialog box will appear:
You will want to copy the project and the Events to the hard drive. Once they are safely copied over you test them to make sure the open properly and you can see the video, you can delete the original project from your iMovie Project Library. If all you want to do is just move it all at once instead of first copying and then deleting, drag the project while holding down the Apple key, which will bring up this dialog instead:
*Note: When you move the Projects & Events, they will be deleted from the original location then copied to the new location. But the projects will all work properly as all the Event clips used will be in the same spot. And it should all 'just work'

  • How do I back-up my ipod touch 4g?

so I have the white screen of death and I heard that rebooting might help it. but if it doesn't work, I really dont want to lose all of my apps, musics, bookmarks, data, EVEYRHTING!! so will backing-up my ipod(for the first time) before rebooting( for the first time) EVERY SINGLE THING I have on my ipod? if it can: 1) how do I back-up my ipod? 2) once i've rebooted, how do I get those saved data and put it back into my ipod??

Sadly if you have the white screen of death you may not be able to do much, all depending on if it's the screen that has malfunctioned or the iOS.  First I would recommended plugging into iTunes and seeing if its recognized to be able to backup.  These instructions are listed here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1766 including the answer to your second quesiton.
If you are unable to backup, indicating youriOS is not working properly, I would start with a 2 button reset as outlines on the 2nd slide here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
If the iPod continues to boot to a white screen and does not allow you to backup, you may be out of luck and have to follow the rest of the steps here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3281
    I hope this helps!
