  • Backing up iphoto library to dvd when size is enormous

this community has helped me every time and once again i am stuck and have searched for the answer with no luck yet.
i have a 20GB library and have already copied it to an external HD and switched my default library position to free up space internally. i manage the two different locations with iphoto library manager.
i would like a hard copy of the library in case (knock on wood) my external HD would crash. too many memories lost. but i have yet to discover a way to do this and am assuming i am overlooking something. how can i burn that massive library to dvds???
    thanks for listening.

so i was entirely unaware of backup. i figured it was something extra and had not yet explored it. i have now downloaded backup and have a few more questions about this process.
my iphoto and itunes folders are on my external hd, yet they are both set as the default library for both programs. i have not yet seen a quickpick or pre-installed plan that will back those up (only available for home folder). so i looked through the custom settings as well and was unable to determine how to back up my external hd. it seems everything is for my mac hd. my external hd never appeared appeared on the desktop as an option to backup.
any thoughts because i would love to back up the folders and files to dvds and then schedule regular backups as well. thanks again for the back up info, and any further help.

  • How do i back up a library?

well I recently have started having a bit of problems with my computer so I am more than likeley going to re-format it. so how would I go about backing up my library so i don't have to import all my CD's and re-purchase all my music again? I've read about using CD's but does this method burn the songs to the discs or just a small data file so i can download them from itunes at a later date? Is there any way to use my iPod to load all my files back on my computer after, and if so how (link please)? lastly, what other methods are there to restore my library?

Yes there is, if you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod to a computer
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:
Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Comparison of iPod managers
    TuneJack Windows Only
    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iGadget Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    SharePod Windows Only
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac and Windows
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
However I wouldn't recommend relying on an iPod as a back up, if it ever needs restored to fix a problem it is erased as part of the process. An external drive is a good place to back up your iTunes, it saves burning CDs or DVDs (which by the way do require you to back up the music files not an index of any kind). If you use iTunes to organise your music and it's all in the iTunes music folder a simple way to back it up is by copying the whole iTunes folder which includes the library files and the music folder to the external drive. If you want something more sophisticated there are programs you can find if you search the net which will do proper full and incremental back ups as well.

  • Backing up itunes library to DVD -- process interrupted

I'm backing up my entire itunes library on dvd-rw and the burner will stop in the middle. then itunes will say: please insert another disc while the burning is taking place. The problem is, the burner won't stop burning. So, I stop the burner and am unable to pick up where I left off in the backing up process. I have over 50 g of music that i'm trying to backup before i take my lappie to the geek squad (long story). does anybody have any ideas how to specifically backup a particular section of my library?

SOMETIMES IT HAPPENS, BUT LET ME ASK U R U BACKING IT UP IN DATA FORM, I SUGGEST U CHOOSE DATA BURNING WHEN U BACKING UP ITUNES, IT SAVES U DISK AND IT IS BETTER.
    1. OPEN ITUNES
    2.UNDER EDIT CLICK ON PREFERENCES.
    3.LOOK FOR ADVANCE
    4.CLICK ON BURNING
5 AN LOOK FOR AUDIO FORMAT
    6.CLICK ON DATA CD /DVD.
THIS SHOULD BURN IN DATA FORMAT. MAKE SURE ALSO U CHOOSE THE HIGHEST SPEED OF BURNING.
AND OPEN ITUNES BEFORE U INSERT UR DISK FOR BURNING. MAKE SURE THE DISK IS FREE AND NEW.
IF U ENCOUNTER PROBLEM RESTART ITUNES AND REBOOT UR COMPUTER. THIS SHOULD BURN UR DISK WITHOUT PROBLEM.IF U DO ,I SUGGEST U GO GET USB DRIVE AND SAVE UR ITUNES IN IT. THEN U DONT HAVE TO BURN THEM.
ALSO IF U ENCOUNTER LOTS OF PROBLEM, JUST DEAUTHORISE UR COMPUTER BEFORE U TAKE IT FOR REPAIRS. U SHOULD NOT LOOSE UR MEDIA, BUT IT CAN HEPPEN. THEY SHOULD REPAIR UR COMPUTER WITHOUT U LOSING ANYTHING. IF IN CASE U LOOSE EVERYTHING U CAN USE UR IPOD TO REINSTALL OR REIMPORT UR SONGS FROM IPOD TO ITUNES. SO MAKE SURE ALL UR SONGS ARE IN UR IPOD BEFORE REPAIRS.WHEN U GET UR COMPUTER BACK REAUTHOURISE UR COMPUTER AGAIN, DO UPDATE AT APPLE.COM THEN U USE UR IPOD TO REIMPORT UR SONGS. U CAN DO THIS VIA A THIRD PARTY SOFTWARE. U CAN USE IPOD2COMPUTER.COM. THERE ARE MANY OF THEM THOUGH. JUST GO ONLINE AND TYPE IPOD TRANSFER SOFTWARES. U WILL SEE MANY OF THEM. U SHOULD NOT HAVE PROBLEM U JUST PAY THEM ABOUT 22 DOLLARS AND ALL UR MUSIC WILL BE TRANSFERED BACK TO ITUNES WITH NO PROBLEM, SO U KNOW WAT SLEEP EASY.

  • Backing up iPhoto Library to DVDs

    Hello,
I'm planning to back up all my files and reinstall Leopard. However, I'm a little worried about backing up my iPhoto library (~22 GB). I don't have an external hard drive so burning to disc is the only way.
I want to retain _all my events and both original and modified photos_. Which method is right for me: using iPhoto's built-in Burn feature or manually copying sections of the iPhoto Library to DVD?
    Thanks!

    Chris:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Be sure you don't select much more than 4GB of photos as reported by iPhoto in the Information pane at the bottom of the left window in iPhoto to burn because iPhoto adds a lot of overhead, i.e. the modified and thumbnail files, and various database files that can bloat each burn. You don't want to get into the burn and get the not enough space message. You can see this
Since all of the disks that get created have the same disk name, keep a written record of the contents of each disk and number the disks with a pen so it will be easier to locate what you need.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Backing up my Library to DVD

    Hello,
I have 52 gigs of iTunes Library that I want to back up to DVD.
What is the best way to do this? I'm not sure I understand what a data disc is.
I want to back up my library (in AIFF format) and keep all the list data. Is there anything special to know?
    Thanks

A data disc is, simply put, a disc that you have burned data to. Whether you use CD-R or DVD-R doesn't really make a difference, if you are burning files, such as music, Word, Excel, PDF, etc., you are burning data to the disc.
I'm not sure I understand what you mean when you say you want to "keep all the list data" in your AIFF files. Do you mean you want to keep the ID3 tag data? If this is what you mean that is not going to be possible. AIFF does not support ID3 tags. Oh, you can "tag" the files using iTunes but the data will not be remembered. For example if you burn the files to Data disc, then want to re-add the files to iTunes at a later date for some reason none of your tags will be there.
Which brings me to another point: why on Earth are your music files in AIFF when you have Apple Lossless available? If you want to keep the original quality and make the files about half the size of the original AIFF then you should convert everything to Apple Lossless. Especially before backing up this library. This will have the added benefit of not only reducing the amount of disc space your Library takes up by about half, but Apple Lossless files fully support ID3 tags. Additionally Apple Lossless files can be used by any application that reads QuickTime files. This includes iMovie, iDVD, Roxio Toast and Jam, etc.
To back up your files, first set iTunes prefs to burn a Data disc. Then create a playlist of the files you want to backup, click the Burn button in the upper right of the window and start feeding in discs. Incidentally backing up 52GB will take 224 DVD-R discs. If you convert to Apple Lossless first, reducing your Library to about 26GB, that will take 112 DVD-R discs.

  • Backing up iPhoto Library to DVD: too big

I want to back up my iPhoto library to DVD so I can have an "off-site" copy. However it is 17GB, and won't fit on one DVD. What's the best way to back up to multiple DVD's? I do have Toast 8, if that's the best way.
    Thanks!

Use the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to create a 20GB disk image, copy the entire library to it, compress it, and then use this tool to segment the image. You need all the segments to recover anything.

  • How do I back up Itunes library to External HD?

    Hello:
Anyone who read my prior post knows that my internal CD-RW Drive crashed. I am now forced to find another method to finally get around to backing up my itunes library which currently has about 2-3 GB of music. When I open itunes and go to file it gives me the option to backup to disk. Obviously with the external HD I will not be backing up to disk. Can anyone assist me with the following:
    1. How will I backup my data to the external HD once I get it today (I am not all that computer literate so as detailed as you can be would be much appreciated).
    2. If I ever need to restore my itunes music back onto itunes how do I accomplish this?
    3. Will backing up my itunes also back up all of my podcasts or just music that I purchased or downloaded from CD, ect.
    4. After I backup today on the external HD can I then open another itunes account on my wife's computer (which is brand new and much faster supporting USB 2.0 where mine is 1.1) and transfer all of my data to her computer so that I do not have to use my computer anymore?
THANKS FOR THE TIME READING THIS!!! I greatly appreciate any replys and have a safe and happy new year!

Its pretty simple to do. Long as you have some extra space to spare on your INTERNAL harddrive (aka the C drive in windows) because you will want to consolidate the library.
In iTUnes when you goto Advanced>Consolidate library it will COPY all songs listed in itunes to the "iTUnes Music" folder, located in My Music>iTUnes.
All purchased items from the itunes store are already in this folder, so itunes will not copy them.
Once this is done all you need to do is goto My Music rightclick the "iTUnes" folder and select copy.
Now open "My Computer" double click the external drive there, rightclick in a blank field and hit "Paste". this will put the whole itunes folder on the external drive with all your music AND the "iTUnes Library.xml" file.
Now use the "Safly remove hardware" to remove/eject the external drive from your PC (This will be a little small green arrow icon in the lower righthand corner of windows, where the clock is).
Far as your wifes computer goes, you may have to create your own user account in windows first UNLESS she doesn't use itunes or you want to combine all your music with hers on her user account in windows.

  • User template folder moved to trash how to put back in sytem library

moved user template folder to trash by mistake how do i put it back in the system library

Then, you should have gotten an authentication dialog box, assuming that the account is an admin one. If not, then you'll have to change the permissions on the folder. To do that, launch the Terminal.app in /Applications/Utilities/, copy and paste in this one-liner into the window that pops up, hit the return key. at the Password: prompt, carefully enter your admin password (since nothing shows up in the window), and hit the return key.
    sudo chmod -R root:admin ~/Desktop/Library
When the normal $ prompt returns, copy & paste this one-line in and hit the return key:
    sudo mv ~/Desktop/Library /System/
That should do the trick, moving the correctly permissioned folder back to its normal place. If so, it should be safe to restart the machine. If not, then my next suggestion is to reinstall the software.

  • How do I back up itunes library to an external hard to free memory on my Macbook?

I have just noticed that a majority of my memory is being used by my itunes library. I was told that I can transfer and use an external to free up space on my macbook.I am in need of some type of step by step or a good link to walk me through it.I don't want to lose any of the movies or music I have accumulated, I am fairly new to the Apple world and just need some beginner help. Thanks

    Nah that's fine I think.
The other thing to make sure of, is that you aren't doubling up on your music/video/podcasts.
If you have a neat folder where all your stuff is great. But if you have set itunes to Copy files to iTunes Media Folder when adding to library, then there is going to be 2 copies. Your original, and your copy, as far as I can remember.
    You should double check that.
Because your backups will be backing up twice as much.
Also note, time machine backups back up all files that have been changed. If you are downloading a 5GB movie, if you download an extra 4MB and do backup again, it will backup another 5GB file.
I always have my download folder as not part of the backup due to this.
You could also add a 2nd HDD in your Macbook: http://eshop.macsales.com/owcpages/datadoubler/

  • How do I back up my library?

the last time I lost my data i lost all my photos i'd imported into iphoto from my camera. where is the folders for me to back up this time? I'm not using time machine so i need to locate them manually

You want to back up the iPhoto library located in the pictures folder in your user account (by default - if you have relocated it then where you put it) - you want to back it up as an entity (not in pieces) - copying it to an external drive is good and quick if you have one
You should not modify your iPhoto library in any way - just copy the entire package to your backup location
