How do I backup a powerbook G4 to replace the hard drive

Help please! I want to replace the 30 GB drive in my power book G4 with an 80GB.
How do I clone everything that's on the old drive before installing the new one and then how do I restore it?
I do own power mac G4 with space to back up to it .
I tried to connect fire wire between the two computers thinking that it would show up as a drive and I could just drag it into another dive in My power mac but nothing happened.
I do own a carbon copy cloner utility by Mike Bombich but not shore how to do this. any help would be apreciated. Thanks!

After installing the new 80GB drive, it does not show up when I try to do a software restore.
You probably need to use the OS X Disk Utility (which you can run from the other Mac with your PB connected in FireWire Target Disk Mode) to format the new hard drive before you can copy anything onto it. Be sure to select the Mac OS Extended format, and select the option to install OS 9 drivers if you'll ever want to boot into OS 9 or have the disk seen by any computer that's running OS 9.
If Disk Utility, used as described above, can't see the new drive to format it, you probably didn't securely connect the new drive when you installed it. Try disconnecting and then reconnecting it. It can sometimes take considerable pressure to snap the logic board connector firmly into place. Check the drive end of the short HD cable, too.

If you upgraded to SL, you did so by disk...there is no download. You have no choice but to find your original Install disk or the SL retail disk. If your backup is a Time Machine backup, you can't boot from that, but once you reinstall OS X, you can use that to restore. If you can't find your disks, you'll have to call AppleCare & get replacements, or find a retail SL disk.

You need to think this through.
Time Machine is a back up application. It keeps a rolling back up of the data. It's called rolling because it means you can revert to the data you had on a specific date and time. But that's not eternal, and as time goes by, and your drive fills up, older backups are deleted. So if you delete Events on your Mac they will - eventually - also be deleted from the Time Machine back up.
If you wan tot archive data hendon't use Time Machine for that job. Here's how you might archive an iPhoto Library:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
Now you have two full versions of the Library.
3. On the Internal library, trash the Events you don't want there
Now you have a full copy of the Library on the External and a smaller subset on the Internal
Some Notes:
As a general rule: when deleting photos do them in batches of about 100 at a time. iPhoto can baulk at trashing large numbers at one go.
You can choose which Library to open: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
You can keep the Library on the external updated with new imports using iPhoto Library Manager

Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
     used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
     requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
     drive being backed up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):

4. SuperDuper!
5. Synk Pro
6. Tri-Backup

Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available. You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports. The last security update released for Tiger users was the 2009-005 update. The latest version of QuickTime is 7.6.4. The last version of iTunes that can run on Tiger is 9.2.1, because 10.0 only supports Mac OS X Leopard and later.
So, are you on version 9.2.1?
Was it Tiger or Leopard you had on the drive before?

I got a message that my internal hard drive is failing, and I need to back up the data I can and replace it.
I'm running a 27' iMac and I can open any of the users except for the main one. The unit just freezes while booting, unless powered up in safe mode.
Is it possible to do this myself, or ... what options are open to me?

If you have never worked on a computer before and, especially, working inside Macs, in general, and iMacs, specifically, then this is NOT a DIY project for you to undertake.
The aluminum model iMacs are an excersize in patience and tedium to get at anything inside.
Take your Mac into either an Apple Store or Apple Authorized repair service center and pay to have them replace the hard drive.
Apple uses proprietary hard drives that have a special connection for temp sensors that control the iMac's internal fans.
Try and get a backup of your data before you bring this in for the hard drive replacement.

My iMac is telling me the hard drive is failing. After a web search, I discovered that you need suction cups to take off the glass to replace the drive. I'm adjust wondering how hard it is to do? I'm Fairly mechanically inclined, so I think I can do it myself. I'd just like to know how tricky it is.

If this is a new 2011 iMac, you can't replace the hard drive except by Apple as they have proprietary software installed on hard drives to monitor the status.
Very likely it's not, as you would be making a warranty call instead of trying to replace it yourself.
However, the info is out there to keep in mind when you buy a new iMac.

I need more space on my computer, so I want to replace the hard drive. I have no OSX install disk, but my computer is running Lion from the app store download. Can I just back up my data onto my new hard drive, and literally just swap them out? The best way to do this is buy your new drive. Get the largest you can buy, and don't buy anything from Western Digital, just a recommendation. The Samsung 1TB is pretty sweet. Put that drive in a external encloser (they're inexpensive). Using CarbonCopyCloner, clone your internal drive to your external one. This is the cleanest way to do it.
Then, boot to the cloned drive, just to make sure it works. It's just a test. Shut down. Replace drive (you can find the instructions for your MacBook Pro, by searching the support section of this website, the manual is there).
Start up with new drive. Make sure everything is fine. Use old drive in external enclosure as either a data drive or scratch drive for Photoshop or whatever you do.
I would set up Time Machine going forward with your new drive. You need a drive at least as large, and probably 50% larger than your internal drive.

Hello and welcome to the support community
You only option is to buy a copy of Mac OS X, either the retail disk or system disks.
There are places you can by a copy of Mac OS X, like online vendors, Amazon or eBay.
System disk are gray and come with more than one disk. Retail disk are black with a 'X' on them and often come as one DVD disk.
Not sure what version your going to require as you haven't provided any specification and model details.
I would safely assume being a G4, it would be happy to install Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger.
