How do I backup and restore an Iphone that is totally destroyed and not functioning in any way

My iphone fell off the back bumper of an ambulance and was run over. Probably several times. The case held it together but the screen is TOTALLY destroyed and I can't do anything on the phone. I have the replacement now but when I try to restore the old (destroyed) one, I can't back it up because I need to put my passcode in on the screen and I can't restore it to factory settings until I turn off Find My Iphone. I can pull it up on Find My Iphone and erase it but I don't know if that will cause problems for the new one. How do I backup or even just restore the device if it will turn on when connected to a computer but is otherwise non functional?

Then ask them how they expect you to reset it when it's not functional. If they still insist you have to reset it or they'll charge you... well, I always thought these cell phone "insurance" plans were a scam.

Once in a while the restore process seems to mess up. What I don't understand is why you would perform a weekly restore.
At any rate, if you must restore, perform a device reset (settings>general>reset) and then you will have the opportunity to restore from iCloud. Restore a device whenever it no longer works correctly, not just as a matter of maintenance. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

You need to restore from your backup and not your wife's. You need to check if your backup is under the same or different apple id. If Id is the same you need to erase phone and find correct backup to restore from. If different you just need to use it at restore time.

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you should definitely be seeing a plus sign after tapping Edit, so I would try a couple relatively easy things (closing the Music app, resetting the iPhone):

If disabled because of a passcode, and you have not synced AFTER setting the passcode, you will have to force the phone into recovery mode & restore it as a new device. All data on your phone will be erased:
Turn your phone off. Leave the USB cable connected to your computer, but NOT your phone, iTunes running, press & hold the home button while connecting the USB cable to your dock connector, continue holding the home button until you see “Connect to iTunes” on the screen. You may now release the home button. iTunes should now display that it has detected your phone in recovery mode, if not quit and reopen iTunes. If you still don’t see the recovery message repeat these steps again. iTunes will give you the option to restore from a backup or set up as new. In your case, setup as "new" will be your ONLY option.

Once the Device is asking to be Restored with iTunes... it is too late to save anything...
To minimise loss... Connect to iTunes on the computer you Usually Sync with and Restore from the most recent Backup...
