How do I backup and sync my iPhone?

Hi,
I've just got a new iPhone and restored it from my home mac.
How I have iTunes on work mac and I want to save all of the phones data and sync it to my work itunes.
However when I check the "sync" checkboxes on the app's section of itunes it says it is going to wipe my iphone's data and sync itunes's apps to the iphone.
How do I go about syncing all of my data on my iPhone to itunes?

by design, iDevices sync with only one iTunes library at a time.

Apple provides functionality in the backup done via iTunes to backup the device and text messages. There is no functionality to view the text messages on the computer.
About iOS backups
Other programs are available which can extract text messages from the device or the iTunes created backup and then be viewed on the computer. To my knowledge, no program exists which can force backed up text messages into the device once they've been removed.
Google is your friend when looking for 3rd party software related to text messages.

In mail app, you can remove the account and add theirs in settings>Mail, Calendars,Contacts.
or add theirs only and in mail, go up a level and view each inbox seperately.
The ipad is not designed for multi-user use however so it is not easy.

Runnig 10.6.8 on a MacBook PRO.....

The easiest fix if you're running Snow Leopard is to export all your contacts, then import them into something like google (I already had a gmail account), and then just use google to sync your contacts instead of icloud (via the sync with Google button in the address book settings).
Its a bit sluggish to update, but it works well. You can then point your iphone, and other iOS devices to use google for contacts too.
If Apple don't want to look after their customers, other companies will gladly do so....

thanks but if Im using iCloud For my Iphone and backing my ipod touch to my computer is that ok or would I have to back both up to ICloud. As u can telll, I want to kep the 2 devices seperate as much as possible, only putting on my phone what i choose to download, buy, or take from my current itunes library most importantly.

Launch iTunes. From the iTunes menu bar click iTunes > Preferences then select Devices.
You can delete backups from there.

What was the full wording of the error message? Usually there is also a number or additional information.
Try placing the iPod in Recovery Mode and then restore
Next try DFU mode and restore.
