How do I backup bookmarks to a folder on my desktop & NOT just an unreadable .json file before trying to recover lost bookmarks?

Previously whenever upgrading to a new browser my Bookmarks stayed the same. So I went into the library to backup what little I have left & was told to 'save to folder on my hard drive' & did so. There's NO FOLDER, just an unreadable file with the extension of .json
Maybe I should ask a better question: When restoring the bookmarks from a prior date will I get back EVERYTHING from that day (which would include the ones I was told to backup & can't, or am I faced with losing what I have left to get back what I lost? I have Windows XP home ed. version 3 & I'm afraid to do anything at all.
I know it's not life & death, just webpages I visit often, but some ARE very important & I don't have the greatest memory to remember them all.
PLEASE HELP ME!! Thanks in advance.

You can restore a JSON backup in Firefox if you have such a backup.<br />
* Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks > Import & Backup > Restore > Choose File
Restoring a JSON will however replace all the current bookmarks.<br />
If you have any that you want to preserve then you need to export the bookmarks to an HTML file and re-import that HTML backup after you have restored the JSON backup.<br />
Make sure that a JSON backup has .json file extension and that an HTML backup has a .html fle extension to avoid problems (nothing happens or you get an error like can't process the backup file).

    Hi d,
Connect the two Macs using FireWire Target Disk Mode http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
Then just drag the folder from your old Mac to your new Mac (it depends which you use for target and which for source, but one will show up as a HD icon on the desktop of the other; you can copy to/from that HD to/from the other Mac (the folder on your desktop).

My guess the problem you are running into is the drive is formatted for a PC as NTFS. OS X can read files from NTFS however it cannot write to it. Check the formatting on the drive, if it's NTFS then it should be reformatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled), you can use Disk Utility to do this.
If you still have a PC and want to share the EHD with the PC and Mac please read MacWorld's Share an external drive between a Mac and a PC article.

MacBook Pro 2010: Flashing folder w/? on not responding to startup keys & I'm trying to install a new hard drive, can anyone help?

Thanks. It started up com that disk but when I went to install it had an error message (didn't get to write out what it said). So I attempted to restore from time machine but it said there was no space, even though it's a new (replacement under warranty) HGST 1TB HD,  so I did what  I think was right and tried to partition the disk but it now says 'Partition faild...POSIX report...cannot allocate memory'.  im not sure what to do, and I'm trying to remember how the previous hd was installed and formatted for use but that was over a year ago now. Should have erased the hd first or something?

I don't think you can in iTunes.

Unfortunately, the recording & movie industry does not respect the rights of the people who make them money, and thus you can only use the paid-for content in ways they see fit. Even if I lived in a bunker where no one else could possibly see the movie I paid for, therefor I'm not 'sharing it illegally', I would still not be allowed in a blue moon to copy that movie to DVD for TV viewing. Someone will tell you to get an AppleTV. How about Apple give us one for free? Until this changes, people wanting to use their content in multiple locations will continue to download music & movies via torrents, legally or illegally.

  • How do I sync from iPhone back to desktop to recover lost bookmarks?

I have Firefox 6.0.2 on my Mac laptop and on an old PC. I run the Firefox app on my iPhone. I left the account activated on my old PC and when my kids changed the bookmarks toolbar on the old PC they deleted all my work bookmarks folders - stuff I've taken years to acquire.
Can I sync from my iPhone to the mac laptop in order to recover those folders or will I have to go to an old backup to recover them? If so, what file am I looking for on the backup drive for 6.0.2's bookmarks?

    Hi!
Unfortunately this is not possible at this stage. Firefox Home is just a receiver, and the way it works doesn't allow any type of information upload.
    Sorry for the inconvenience.

  • How can I transfer my photos with their folder to my pc ( not only as a separate file)?

I want to tranfer my photos with modified albums that I made on my phone!!

For photos: You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)

  • Recovering lost bookmarks

I recently logged in and opened Netscape to discover that all of my bookmarks had disappeared. After searching around with Spotlight for anything with the name "bookmark," I find myself unable to find any file that contains any reference to any of the bookmarks I once had. Can anyone enlighten me as to where my bookmarks might have gone, if it's possible for a person to "accidentally" delete them all with only a single keystroke or selection, or where a person might look if they wanted to recover them?

Absolutely nothing came up when you entered "Bookmark" into Spotlight? Safari's bookmark file, "Bookmarks.plist" should appear. Netscape's bookmarks should appear as Bookmarks.html with backups appending a number, such as Bookmarks-1.html. Preview's recent items list is kept in a file called "com.apple.Preview.bookmarks.plist". And if the word "Bookmarks" appears in any documents or help files, they should appear as well.
Netscape shares bookmarks with Mozilla and for me they are buried in the Mozilla folder in the Library folder on Finder's Home Page. In the mozilla folder will be a folder named "Profiles". In that folder will be a folder named "Default". In that folder will be a folder with letters and numbers in its name. In that folder is the Mozilla/Netscape file Bookmarks.html and the numbered backups as described above. If you do not have a Mozilla folder in your Library, look for a Netscape folder either in the Library or in the Application Support folder in your Library.
Let me know what you find.

  • I recently tried to burn some photos to a disc.  It did not work, but then I ended up with a .fpbf folder on my desktop.  Can't trash it, and when trying to burn again, I get this "... can't be burned because the original items can't be found". Help???

I recently tried to burn some photos on a CD. For some reason, It did not work.  Now I have a .fpbf folder on my desktop. I can't seem to get rid of it.  I tried dragging it to the trash, but then I get a box asking my to type my password it, so Finder can make the changes.  Doing so, does nothing at all.  And when I try to burn another CD from the same .fpbf file, I get a the following message: "There are 35 items that can’t be burned because the original items can’t be found. Skip the items and continue burning?".   When I skip and continue burning, nothing shows up on the CD.  In the meantime, the .fpbf folder is still in my desktop.  I tried changing the aliases on each pic, but it still doesn't work.  Any ideas of how I can remove this folder from my desktop?
    Thank you.

    Beavis2084,
Thank you for your detailed explanation but something is seriously wrong with my computer. Although the method you have described is very similar to the one I tried in step 2 from my second post, I have since "done things" which may have complicated matters—or suggests that my computer has a more serious problem.
    Here's what I did:
1). Installed Onyx and discovered that I had a .plist file (com.apple.iphotomosaic.plist) that was causing a Syntax error: "Conversion of data failed. The file is not UTF-8, or in the encoding specified in XML header, if XML." After doing some research online, I was given the understanding that downloading the iLife update 9.0.3 (I installed the more recent version, 9.0.4) would solve this problem because it would also fix some system issues. So, I downloaded it...and when it didn't solve the problem, I decided to just deleted that .plist file.
2). I read your knew post and decided to follow your directions, even though I realized they were basically the same steps I followed in the 2nd method I mentioned earlier. I say "basically" because, for some reason, after inserting a blank disc, my computer does not open the disc in the Finder. Instead, it places the blank disc's image on the Desktop, even though the Finder's Preferences and the System's Preferences are set to have it open in the Finder—nothing should be on my Desktop! (Note: When transferring the items (all folders) I want to burn to the blank disc, I did not use the Option-Click-Drag method as before, I used the Click-Drag method, which created the curved arrow in the lower left corner of each item.)
Now, for the result of "method 2," the method we basically have in common, the computer goes through the burn stage but, in the verify stage, tells me that it is unable to verify the disk, suggests that my DVD may be unreliable and that I should try another disc, and then tells me about some "fork" (?) error (-43).
I don't know what to do anymore...

  • How do i get photos to save directly into my cloud not just my phone?

i purchased extra room on my iCloud and turned on photo stream on my devices. i did this so my photos would be stored on the cloud because i always run out of storage on my phone. firstly, how do i get pictures to start automatically saving into the photo stream? and how do i get photos to save directly into the cloud and not just on my device? I have my cloud connected between my macbook, ipad and iphone. i have mountain lion on my macbook, my ipad was just purchased last week so should be up to date, and have downloaded and installed the most up to date software on my phone.

    Hello zampass,
Photos do not take up space on your iCloud storage. Photo Stream is seperate from iCloud storage.
Does Photo Stream use my iCloud storage?
No. Photos uploaded to My Photo Stream or Shared Photo Streams do not count against your iCloud storage.
From: iCloud: Photo Stream FAQ http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4486
I would recommend turning on Photo Stream, outlined in the same FAQ:
How do I turn on Photo Stream?
Once your devices are up to date and you have set up your iCloud account, it’s easy turn on Photo Stream on any of your devices. Here’s how:
On your iOS devices, go to Settings > iCloud > Photo Stream, and turn on My Photo Stream and Shared Photo Streams.
On your Mac, go to System Preferences > iCloud and select the checkbox for Photo Stream. Click the Options button to verify that both My Photo Stream and Shared Photo Streams are enabled. Then, open iPhoto or Aperture to confirm that My Photo Stream and Shared Photo Streams are turned on in the application you want to use with Photo Stream. You can also adjust your Photo Stream settings in iPhoto or Aperture Preferences.
And tell iPhoto to automatically Import the photos to the computer from Photo Stream in the iPhoto Preferences:
That way your Photo stream items will always Automatically download to your computer and you can sync them to whatever device you choose.
When all that is setup, you can delete newer photos as you take them or periodically from the Camera Roll to free up space.
Keep this in mind from the FAQ:
What photo formats does Photo Stream support?
Photo Stream supports JPEG, TIFF, PNG, and most RAW photo formats. Photo Stream does not work with video.
    Take care,
    Sterling

  • How to save backup in a target folder

I am trying to figure out how to save a backup to a folder when I backup files like G:/Data Backup instead of creating a folder with a random name. I have a WD My passport portable hard drive using WD smartware.   With backups will it save to that target location and replace just files that have changed?

You can't. All you can do is move the top level folder of the save from the root of the drive to somewhere a bit deeper down a file tree, e.g. your G:/Data Backup folder. But what will then happen is the WDSmartware.swstor folder will be created within that folder, and the device and drive sub-folders within that. It's done that way as Smartware is actually designed to work with NAS drives to save backups from multiple devices and multiple drives within those devices. The "random name" you describe isn't actually random, it's the ID of the individual drive(s) within the device you're backing up. For your case you might want to look at the new WD Backup Software, which may meet your needs a little better. I haven't tried it (as I need proper NAS backup, hence use Smartware), but from the description it's better suited to backups onto portable drives like your MP.

  • How do i backup only 1 particular folder in Time Machine

I dont know if this has been asked or not-frankly i just want to know because ive never even touched time machine before. I have a time capsule now at work and boss is telling me to backup my work to the time capsule using time machine. I keep hearing that this thing works backward, that you have to EXCLUDE folders you DONT want? Is that right? If so thats just plain stupid IMHO. All i want to do is setup a nightly backup of work and not have to worry about it. How do i best set this up?

2.So does that mean Im working directly on the external drive?
    Yes.
Im confused with this solution. Im about to setup a Time Capsule HD as the target drive for TM or this OSX Backup idea above. The whole reason of doing that is so idont have to manually copy it there and then keep it updated.
I'm confused about what is confusing you. Storing data on an external drive is no different from storing it on an internal one. The whole point of this discussion, I thought, was that (a) you were under orders from your boss to back up your work data with Time Machine, and nothing but Time Machine; (b) you were, for some strange reason, dead set against backing up anything except your work data; and (c) you couldn't be bothered to set up a bunch of exclusions in Time Machine. This way, you don't have to. Just exclude the internal drive. The one you don't exclude -- the external -- will be backed up automatically, which is what you seem to want.

  • Daily backup for a certain folder on my desktop using Ipod - Possible?

I would like to use my iPod as a memory media to perform a daily backup (at a certain given time, every day) for a folder in my computer. How do I do that?
Do I need to have some sort of a software that will be directed to the iPod as its media? Is such a thing possible?
    Thanks a lot...
    R.

Hmmm... I've never done something like that myself... I would imagine you would need a dedicated application for backing up.
Maybe someone will come along who knows more. Otherwise, you might try Google.
    Cheers!
