I'm very late to the conversation but thought I'd chime in since I've just been dealing with this myself. One way to copy from Kindle books is to make sure that you have your settings to backup highlights etc. online, then highlight the text in the Kindle app, go to your Kindle webpage (https://kindle.amazon.com/your_highlights) and copy the text from there.
Remember, to be able to do this you have to set the app to backup highlights etc. I think this is set individually for each book. On my iPad the default is to backup.

There should be an "i" somewhere on the screen that will provide additional help.
With iBooks all that you need to do is hold the book image in the library and delete, stays in your purchased space with the bookstore.
With Nook reader, in the library you can touch on the top of the screen to pull down a list of operations that includes archiving books.
Kindle should have a similar function, though I don't normally use Kindle.

To remove the book simply touch and hold the cover on the main page. A little pop up will ask, remove? Say yes. The book content will de deleted. The cover will remain on your main page with a little down arrow so that you can redownload it if you wan in the cloud view. In the device view, it simply disappears.
Note at the bottom of the page are a couple of switches, labeled cloun and device. The device switch shows you books on your device. The cloud page shows your whole catalog, and the down arrow allows you to bring down anything in your catalog to the device.

What you need to do is temporarily set up your new 4. Just long enough to update the operating system. Then you can erase all content and settings - which puts it back to its out of box state, then set it up again, this time restoring it from the backup of your two.
So, using the same Apple ID on both - just to keep things easy - set up your 4. Just basically choose 'set up as new' to activate it, then immediately update the iOS to 7.1.2.

Then set it up again, this time choosing to 'restore from the backup' of your 2 and your 4 will be a near clone of your two.

If you havn't already done so then you need to link the Kindle app with your Amazon account, which you can do via the 'i' button at the bottom right of it and then Settings on the pop-up that appears. When you open the Kindle App on your iPad, you need to enter your mom's ID and Password she uses for Kindle books. It sounds to me like you downloaded a sample of a book you believe is in your library and then you were prompted to purchase the book because whatever you have entered for a ID and Password is not your mom's Kindle ID and Password.

If you've downloaded the Kindle app from the app store then you should be able to link it to your Amazon account - when you open the app for the first time I think that you get a 'register' screen. You should then see your kindle books on the Cloud tab in the app, from which you can then download into the app's Device tab.
