How do I boot Mac OS X Leopard from an external hard drive onto an eMac?

My eMac's internal hard drive died a while ago, and I was finally able to successfully able to install Mac OS X Leopard onto an external hard drive. However, my eMac still refuses to boot Leopard. I only keep being put on the OS Install/Upgrade screen. After install, I selected the Start-up Disk utility and chose my hard drive. Upon restart I find myself on the Install/Upgrade screen as I said earlier. I tried restarting again, but this time I pressed the option key to select a boot disk. However, only my Mac Install Disk shows up.

How is the external HD connected - USB or Firewire? Most Power PC Macs can't boot from a USB connected external HD.

I have an imac 2009 the disk drive is damaged and I have lost the passwords I need to reset passwords I tried booting with a macosx disk from an external hard drive but did not read the drive how else can I reset password ?
I have a 2012 mac book pro can I use that to connect with firewire and load osx that way? and how woudl I do that?
    Thanks so much!

To what password are you referring? Do you mean your user account's admin password? Or do you mean the master password for File Vault or do you mean a Firmware Password?
    For an admin password:
    Forgot Your Account Password
    For Snow Leopard and earlier
Mac OS X 10.6- If you forget your administrator password
    For Lion/Mountain Lion
        Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
When the menubar appears select Terminal from the Utilities menu.
Enter resetpassword at the prompt and press RETURN. Follow
instructions in the dialog window that will appear.
Or see Reset a Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Password and
OS X Lion- Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
If you cannot do the above then try this:
      1. Boot to Safe Mode by restarting and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-S keys until a black screen with white type appears.
      2. At the prompt, type the following commands pressing return after each command line:
         /sbin/fsck -yf
If you do not receive a "Filesystem OK" message then repeat this command until
you do.  If after seven tries you still do not receive a "Filesystem OK" message,
then the system is corrupted and needs to be reinstalled.
         mount -uw /
         cd /private/var/db/netinfo
         mv local.nidb local.old
         rm ../.AppleSetupDone
         shutdown -r now
The second-to-last command above will cause OS X to think that the operating system is newly installed, and when the new owner starts up the computer it will send him/her to the startup wizard where he/she can start a new user without reinstalling.
This last method does not actually change a password. It simply removes the user accounts and lets you create an initial admin account as if the computer were new out of the box.
How to reset the OS X password without a startup CD:
Reboot into Single-user Mode. Enter the following and press RETURN after each command line
       1. Type fsck -fy
       2. Type mount -uw /
       3. Type passwd <username>
I have never tried this method myself.

Can anyone boot Leopard from an external hard drive on a G5 iMac PowerPC? How?

Allan's answer is irrelevant as he refers to Snow Leopard. He must have isread your post!
Yes, you can and I do. The proviso is that the external hard drive is connected by firewire, as a PPC Mac cannot boot via USB.

    Hello Docwa
Check out the article below to move your iTunes Media folder to an external drive so that way you can have the media externally. If you have not added the media yet, go ahead and move the folder if you do not have enough room on your computer so you can import the music

  • How do i copy my files from my external hard drive onto my imac

how do i copy my files from my external hard drive onto my imac

You should be able to 'migrate them' without having to do so during a reinstall, from an external drive. In some cases, you may be able to use TimeMachine software even if the drive had not been used as a backup.
The usual way, though, is to drag & drop copy from one to another (volume or folder) you created in there and have open. Or drag an item on top of the icon of a hard disk drive when it is mounted on the desktop. I'm used to working with open folders and windows, because that works best; and then see if I want to change how things look inside their destination. This helps should I later want to burn them to a DVD and have it correct. And I want to know where they are.
I had more links to some information about importing or migrating data into a Mac from an external, a week ago, but can't find them now. A few good links to pages, but I think I posted what I did find directly to answer someones question about it; and believe the info was in an Apple Support article about TimeMachine, near the lower part of the page with blue words with a disclosure triangle, so you could read more in that page. But I don't believe these two are correct in that TimeMachine (some versions) only allow wireless backup to a drive in a base station unit such as Apple sells, for this. The link I saw simply said how to work around not using the wireless stuff. Maybe it was a dated item, not in these?
See a main general portal to TimeMachine support,
    here: http://www.apple.com/support/timemachine/
Or basics that may not provide optional copy methods:
Mac Basics - Time Machine backs up your mac:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
Perhaps a search of Apple Support database (or even ASC discussions?) would yield ideas, and perhaps find what may work for the kind of files you want to copy, and where they can be found & used later. Are the files for specific applications? Or images, music, etc?
    Good luck & happy computing!

How do I move data on time machine from one external hard drive to another?

Although the documentation says you can copy Time Machine backups in the Finder, it's very slow and sometimes doesn't work at all.
Launch Disk Utility, open the built-in help, and search for the term "Duplicate." Follow the instructions. Turn Time Machine OFF in its preference pane while copying the volume.

Hopefully you backed up the entirety of the folder iTunes in <User's Music>. If so copy it from the backup into <User's Music> and install iTunes.

  • How do I transfer all my iPhoto contents from my external hard drive back to my MacBookPro iPhoto?

My MacBook Pro recently had to have it's software cleared completely by a genius at the apple store. I purchased an external hard drive to save all of my documents and photos safely on so I would not lose them. I now am having difficulty reloading all of my iPhoto contents back onto my laptop from my external hard drive. Has anyone else experienced this? Will my iPhoto library go back to it's original appearance with all of the special albums I had made and the way in which I organized my photos and videos? How do I find what folders my photos were saved on my external hard drive to drag back onto my laptops iPhoto library?

iPhoto stores it's pictures in the Pictures/iPhoto Library, so if you have this backed up on a external drive, then it's a simple matter of replacing the new iPhoto Library (free of anything) with the copy of the older one on the external drive and running iPhoto.
If you have some items in the new iPhoto Library you can export them to the Desktop until the old one is replaced and then reimport them. Also another mehtod is to right click on the iPhoto Library and "Show Package Contents" inside is a folder called "Originals" which contain your files.
If you replaced the files and iPhoto doesn't open up, then reset it.
    iPhoto rebuild database:   https://support.apple.com/kb/HT2638
You might want to consider not having your movies in iPhoto, it's not designed to handle too much, in fact 10,000 pictures of mine seem to overload it.
You can keep seperate iPhoto Libraries, use the option key held at launching of iPhoto to select another iPhoto Library.

  • How do I download videos in different formats from an external hard drive?

How do I download videos in MPEG and other formats from an external hard drive to  a MacBook?

If the external hard drive is the source, then "download" is a confusing term. To "download", refers to the action of transfering by internet protocol from the internet to a device.
To "copy" those files, it is simply a matter of plugging in the external hard drive via the USB cable provided with that drive to a corresponding port on your Air. The drive should automatically mount, and either be visible by an icon on your desktop, or in a Finder window.
You simply click on the icon, or do similarly within a finder widow to examine the contents of the drive. You would open an additional Finder window and naviagte to your desired flder destination.
Then, simply "drag and drop" the files you wish to copy from the source (the external hard drive), to the destination fold on your Air.

iMovie has only access to 'Mac'/hfs formatted drives.

  • How do I back up my MacBook Pro from an external hard drive if my macbook won't boot up from the white start up screen? HELP!

I went to the Genius Bar a week ago, and the guy helping me there was nice enough to help me save some money by telling me I could replace the bad hard drive my MacBook Pro had by myself. I bought everything I needed (hard drive, screws, external hard drive) and my computer won't boot past the white start up screen. It doesn't even show the Apple sign at the start up screen. How do I back up my computer so I can save all my music, school files, etc.? Could really use someone's advice on what to do! Thanks!

Ok, to be sure I understand what's going on. You were able to boot the Macbook from the existing "damaged" internal drive, and it has been backed up to the internal.
If that is correct, your internal drive is working. Just to be sure, try booting with the R key down. Then run Disk Utility to repair the internal drive. That drive may in fact be useable.
You should be aware that you cannot boot the MBP from a Time Machine back up.
Please post back so I am sure I am understanding the situation.

  • About installing Lion over Snow Leopard from an external Hard Drive

I was just talking with an Apple Representative on the phone a bit earlier and he said that if I connected up to a computer with Lion on it already, booted it into recovery mode, then installed Lion onto an external HD that I could then attach the external HD with Lion on it to a Snow Leopard machine and boot off of the Lion Partition (on the external HD) and then I could upgrade my sno leopard machine from this lion "image" on my external Lion drive.
My question is that will this keep all of my files on my Snow Leopard machine in place (so basically will this perform an upgrade) or completely erase everything off of my Snow Leopard machine?

To boot from an external optical drive:
    Boot Using OPTION key:
      1. Restart the computer.
      2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "OPTION" key.
      3. Release the key when the boot manager appears.
      4. Select the desired disk icon for the external optical drive. The DVD
should be in the optical drive before restarting the computer.
      5. Click on the arrow button below the icon.

  • Installing Leopard From An External Hard Drive

    Hi everyone,
It's been a long journey trying to get my mac fixed after it started acting up and obviously since I am posting here it is not fixed yet. I need to re-install os x on an external drive and it is telling me that I have to erase everything on the disk before I can install it, but I need everything on the external hard drive and paid the stupid geek squad 100+ $ just to put my stuff on it. I guess my question is: Is there any way to not have to erase everything on my external hard drive to install os x properly again?
I have an iomega external drive if that makes a difference.

Having all your data backed up is the best thing you could have done before doing anything else (but you probably knew that).
Reinstalling form an external drive is sort of right - you may want to look here
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
But if you're short on time you can insert the CD/DVD that came with your Mac and hold down the C key when you reboot. This will bot your Mac from that disk rather than your internal HD. Select the language once it boots, then choose DiskUtility from the Utilities menu. Try selecting the repair disk option. If that works, you'll be good to go. If that fails, you can choose the erase and install option. Once that [roces is complete, you can copy your data back to the internal HD.
However, if your internal HD is bad, or there is some other hardware problem, you'll be back where you started, and a call to Apple, an Apple Store, or an Apple repair shop may be in order.
