How do I boot up my Mac with the install disk (other problems)?

Hi there,
My Mac ran out of battery the other day and when plugged back into the mains failed to load up other than the blue screen with the Apple logo, followed by the circular progress bar and a long rectangular progress bar (which I assume is disk repair).  The disk repair bar tends to get about one-third of the way across, then starts again.  After the second time, the Mac chooses to give up and turns itself off - I'm assuming this isn't a fan problem as it seems to switch itself off at exactly the same point each time.
I have tried loading the Mac from the install disk by holding down C on startup, but I can't get to the install screen.  I've also tried loading by holding down the shift key, but the system won't load up in safe mode.
I experienced a similar problem earlier this year, but was able to reinstall the Mac and this solved the problem.  This time, I'm struggling to get things working.  Everything else seems to have been working up until now.
I'd really appreciate any help that you can give me,
Many thanks,
Michael

Do you mean iTunes library?
iTunes account is what you use to make iTunes purcahses.
iTunes library is what is on your computer.
It says my phone can only be set up woth one itunes account. How do I remove the previous account?
No, it tells you it can only be sync'd with one iTunes library.
Simplest way is to copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder (thisis the iTunes library) from old computer to new computer.

  • How to reinstall Leopard from another source than the install disk?

Hi there. Great forum full of information but I somehow could not find the answer to my problem.
I own a MacBook Pro and for some reason, the Optical drive refuses to read DVD and CD. It still accepts blank CD and does write....strange.
I can live with that, but what will I do if and when my Mac needs access to the install disk that came with it?
Today I partitioned an external Lacie HD with the intention of installing OS Leopard on it. I thought this would be an ideal solution as a back up strategy. Files in one volume, OS in another.
I have copied the content of both install disks on my desk top through firewire using my good lady's macbook (tiger) but when I click on the install icon, I get a negative message.

What is the way of doing this?
Also, is it possible to reformat an reinstall the OS through firewire using the other macBook optical drive?
    Thanks

You must be sure the drive is partitioned GUID or it will not boot a computer from the cloned installer disc.
You may want to consider getting a flash drive. An 8 GB flash drive will hold the OS X installer and a 16 GB one will hold the installer and Disc 2 (need to partition the flash drive.) Take care what brand you buy. Some don't work too well for booting Macs. I've had good success with PNYs. Prep them as follows:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
The above works, also, for external hard drives.

  • I had osx version 10.6.8 i reinstalled osx with the install disk now i have 10.6.3

i had osx 10.6.8 i reinstalled with the osx install disk and now i have 10.6.3 and some of my apps are not compatible any suggestions please and thank you

It is possible you had used the Combo or software update to move from 10.6.3 to 10.6.8 prior to the reinstall.   Then when you reinstalled, the install disk took you to 10.6.3 and as MichelPM says, you will need to update again.
The appropriate combo updater is Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1   It's a big update and can take 40 minutes or more.
But you will still have to software update to pick up the latest security and iTunes updates.
Don't forget to back up your files first.

  • How to share apps on 2 Macs with the same Apple ID ?

    Hi,
I got a new iMac (2013 - Mavericks), and I gave my old one (2010 - Lion) to my husband. I've downloaded some new games on the Apple Store with my Apple ID for my new Mac, and it works fine. But when my husband wants to install them on his Mac, when he types the password for my Apple ID, it doesn't work, it says "wrong user/password"...
It seems that once I've activated my Apple ID on my new Mac, it prevented the old one to use it ?? The Home Sharing is turned on, but apparently it only concerns iTunes (music, etc), but not the NEW apps from the App Store. Everything new on my Mac can't be shared with the old Mac.
What can I do ? We don't want to create a new Apple ID for my husband, because we don't want to lose what there is already on his old Mac (we use the same music, games, apps, etc).
    Thanks for your help.

    Welcome to the Apple community.
If we means 2, then you are best keeping seperate accounts. What you need to do is share photo stream albums with the other.

  • Stuck booting up to Mac os x install disk after I deleted my hard drive

Ok I was wanting to restore my macbook pro so I put the original install disk that came with my computer. Afterwhich I erased my hard drive.
But now it wont let me install the orignal software because I forgot that I had recently installed snow leapord. Which I have. Now I am unable to eject my install disk because I am stuck booting up to it. I just need a way to get the disk out so i can put the snow leapord disk in and re-install everything.
    Please HELP!!!

When you turn on the computer, press and hold the eject button. The DVD will eject after a few seconds.

  • I installed windows 7, I restarted my computer with the install disk still in and it made me reinstall but my product key would not work anymore.

So I had installed windows 7, but I didn't know how to go back to the os-x so I just turned my computer off then back on but it stayed on windows but asked me to install.  I'm guessing it was because the install cd was still in the disk drive.  So when i started the installation process again I got to the point where I had to type in my product key but because I had already used it my product key was unavailable.  So I'm wondering if there's a way to get my product key to work again.  I called microsoft tech support and they told me that I had to talk to someone at apple and I'd like to at all costs avoid paying 50$ to be told to call microsoft.

you didn't read the manual or even look or understand the default keyboard assignments
    x = Mac OS X
    Option key = boot manager
Apple drivers in Windows includes one just like in OS X System Preferences to handle OS Switcher control panel part of "boot camp" control panel (over used term that tends to mislead and confuse)

  • Just Bought an Imac...What do I do with the Install Disks?

    Hi There,
I'm hoping someone may have some feedback on the following.
I just opened my brand new imac, turned it on and was able to launch a program.
But I see that there are two accompanying install disks. Do I need to still install something that is on the disks? Thanks for your advice and I hope you have a great week ahead.

You are welcome, neighbor( or neighbour!). This is off topic, but I was heading for Vancouver (BC) a few days ago and left a little more money than I intended. I drifted through a stop sign at about 2 MPH just before the Border booths (two languages, I just did not see it) and got a breathalyzer test (passed) and a ticket from the RCMP for $121 Canadian for ignoring a traffic control device. (I still like our Northern neighbors!).

  • IMac won't startup with SL Install Disk

I purchased SL for my 20" Intel core-duo iMac and can't get the computer to get past the startup screen (grey apple with spinning bars) with the install disk. It starts up fine using the original system disk, and I've repaired the hard drive and tried to repair the permissions (some won't fix), but I wasn't worried since I was planning to run an archive and install. Has anyone else had this problem? Could it be related to my hard drive?

no, it couldn't have anything to do with the hard drive. the hard drive is not involved in booting from the DVD. first try cleaning the dvd and then try booting again. if that does not help boot from the main hard drive, insert the dvd and verify it with disk utility. also checksum it with disk utility. (Images menu->checksum). most likely it's a bad dvd.

  • I have an Imac using the old Classic operating system.  The printer I was using died and I need a new printer that will work on the OS 9.1/9.2 operating system.  Does the install disk that comes with the printer allow the computer to communicate with the

My printer died and I need a printer that is compatable with OS 9.1/9.2.  Some printers say they are compatible with OS 9.1/9.2 but do they need a driver or is it included with the install disk that comes with the printer?

As long as the printer is accurately described as being compatible with OS 9.1/9.2, if it needs to have software (such as drivers) installed that software should either be included (usual) or downloadable from the net(usually from the manufacyrer's website).
Not all non-Apple printers need drivers installed. Some, such as many Postscript ones that connect via ethernet, are quite comfortable using the LaserWriter 8 printware that's part of OS 9. Some of those, though, may need to have a model-specific PPD (Postscript Printer Description) installed, a small document that informs the printware of the capabilities of the printer.

  • How can I make a back-up with the MAC OS X disc on external data?

Hello guys! I have a problem, my MacBook does not turn on, so to save some of the data I have to make a back-up. For this I bought an external drive to put the data on. With the disc MAC OS X I tried recovering the data, but this does not work. When I press the button to make a back-up, it says: In need of users interacion for identitycontrol. How can I fix this? So to be clear, I am using the disc Utility, and using the First Aid pannel.

The filckering ? mark means that no bootable system can be found. You need to put the disk in and then restart while holding a key down till it begins loading the needed files. You can hold the c key down to make the Mac start from the installed disk. Another method is to hold the option/alt key down at start till a window showing bootable volunes appears then select the disk. Also try the safe boot which will run basic file structure check.
    Key or key combination
    What it does
    Option
Display all bootable volumes (Startup Manager)
    Shift
Perform a Safe Boot (start up in Safe Mode)
    Left Shift
    Prevent automatic login
    C
Start from bootable media (DVD, CD, USB thumb drive, and so forth)

  • I have an external hard drive that was formatted by a PC and has files and directories etc. I want to format it and use it on my IMAC for backup but I can't seem to write to it nor can I delete current content. How do I initialize it for use with the MAC?

I have an external hard drive that was formatted by a PC and has files and directories copied to it etc. I want to use it on my IMAC for backup. I see it on my my IMAC . I can open files etc.  But I can't seem to write to it nor can I delete current content. I don't care if I lose current content. How do I initialize it for use with the MAC?

You can't write to it because it's formatted as NTFS which OS X will read but not write to. If you want to continue using the drive with both a PC and OS X you will need to download and install NTFS-3G so you can then write to it from your Mac. You can get NTFS-3G at:
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/24481/ntfs-3g
If you want to use the drive exclusively with your Mac then move the data off it and reformat it in Disk Utility (Applications - Utilities - Disk Utilities) as Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)

Whenever I boot up my Mac in the morning Firefox automatically starts and displays my home page. I would only like to see the desk top with no applications running. I am running OSX 10.4.11 on my laptop.
== Started possibly a few weeks ago.

Hmm.. Okay I've done a bit more digging and tried the following two things before the last restart.. Not sure which one actually worked but give these a shot (one at a time) and let us know which is the ''actual'' solution! :)
    1. Open Safari -> Preferences -> General
    - change "Default Web Browser" to Safari
    - Close all applications
    - Relaunch Safari and change default browser back to Firefox.
    2. Remove the check from "Reopen windows when logging in" in the logout dialog and logout of the computer..
I suspect step 2 is actually the proper solution, but I did both so, hopefully one of them works for everyone else!
