How do I boot XServe from DVD?

I'm upgrading the operating system on our XServe G5 from Mac OS X Server 10.3.9 to 10.5. However, the installation instructions in the "Upgrading and Migrating" guide are not helpful in describing the initial startup.
I would like to startup directly from the installation DVD (without using a firewire, etc.). As a first attempt, I followed the procedure described in the XServe User Guide for "Choosing a Startup Method from the Front Panel". I tried holding the identifier button as described. Step 2 states "Continue to hold in the system identifier button until the top row of blue lights blink sequentially."
This did not work. Instead, both rows of blue lights blinked simultaneously, and the startup proceeded in the usual way. The installation DVD was ejected in the process. Has anyone tried this? What went wrong?

Thanks DaddyPaycheck.
I thought so, but perhaps I'm wrong. Unfortunately, I'm a lowly graduate student who does not have access to the origninal documentation at the moment. In addition, I've upgraded the Server Admin software to 10.5, and this version does not seem to be compatible with the current 10.3.9 Server software. As a result, I can't access the machine remotely to verify this... I do have the license number, however, so maybe I can get technical specs that way.
Do you know where to find clear instructions for starting in target disk mode? Can this be done using a remote machine on the network?

  • How do you boot up from a 2nd drive?

I will be installing a 2nd drive and doing a clean instal of 10.6. How do I boot up from this drive, and then how do I transfer the files, favopurites and email etc across?

You asked if it transferred every folder. I answered that Migration Assistant does not transfer the old System, only your User files. Every single User file.
Once you have finished transferring your User files, you can stop using the old system drive, or even remove it and set it aside on a shelf as a backup, or wait a week or two and and re-use it for something else.
Once you boot from a new System drive, / (the root directory) is located on the new Boot Drive,  and new /Users is created there, and everything is referenced from there. Move your User files over as well, and the old drive will not be referenced any more.

         Q. What sizes of USB Flash sticks are supported?
         A. USB Flash sticks are supported in 64, 128, and 256 MB sizes. No other sizes are supported.
         Q. Can I use any USB memory stick for this application?
         A. No. Only Cisco USB memory sticks are supported.
    Q. Can I boot an image directly from the USB Flash module?
    A. Yes. USB drivers have been added to rommon, starting with version 12.4(13r)
         Q. Can I format the USB Flash module on the router?
    A. Yes. You can format the module on either a router or a PC. You must  specify "FAT16 file system" as the file system for the PC format process  to use.
If your setup satisfies above conditions you can get the router to boot up with the IOS on the USB flash
If you are in ROMMON mode, use 'dev' to find out the name of the USB Flash (should be usbflash0).
    set BOOT=usbflash0:
If you are in the router,

  • Boot XServe from External FW?...

I help run a group of 6 users on a network. We use G5 Xserve with and XRAID running 10.4.6. I'm trying to resolve a degraded server, but the workflow doesn't allow for the server do be down very often. I was looking to run the server from an external FW disk; allowing me to work on the drive modules without interrupting work.
What I've Done, 1) Created a bootable image of the server volume, 2)Successfully booted this volume to a G5 tower via the FW port. Then, 3) Connected the same FW drive to the XServe, 4) Attempted to boot the XServe from the FW drive via the front panel - this was not successful.
Is it possible to run the XServe from an external FW drive?
    All comments welcome, Thanks!

    1) How did I create the disk image? I used a utility called SuperDuper!
This is fine and the same process should work for the server as well.
    2) Does the volume show up as a startup disk in System Preferences? Yes, but I have not "blessed" it.
If it shows up in the Startup Disk area then it is already 'blessed' which means your system sees it as bootable. Only blessed/bootable drives should show up in that spot. I was asking because it is possible to make non-blessed disk copies but that doesn't seem to be your problem.
Obviously this is coming back to running from the FW drive, and I haven't been able to do this successfully yet-so it is now my primary concern. I'm hoping that the front panel is "locked"-and "unlocking" it will allow a proper boot
This is stumper - it should be working. I was reviewing your post and you even used it to boot another machine so it's not some obscure ancient firewire chipset issue or anything. I doubt the Xserve is locked - check the front panel right next to the power button and see if the light is on or if the allen wrench dial is set to "locked". With all you've done it doesn't sound like it is but that will prevent booting off the optical or external drive.
As for this fw drive thing assuming the case is unlocked at this point I'm down to suggesting work-arounds like trying one of the other firewire ports or a new firewire drive and repeating the process. It sounds like you're doing it right, wish I could be of more help.
Going on from here: I'm sort-of concerned about the state of your drives if the RAID won't rebuild but at this point I would suggest starting from the optical drive, breaking the RAID by moving Drive 2 using either Disk Utility or the command line and wiping that drive. You can either try another fresh repair at that point and let the RAID 1 try to come-back from the dead or simply use Drive as your fresh system install target and decide on re-creating the RAID later.
    Good luck,

  • Booting XServe from PowerBook Superdrive?

    Hello,
I need to upgrade my Gen2 G4 XServe from 10.2.8 to 10.4. My XServe does not have the SuperDrive option and the OS disks are only available on DVD now. They completely phased out the CD media for Tiger. So, I'd like to try to boot my XServe to the SuperDrive in my G4 PowerBook in order to install Tiger.
Obviously this would not be a supported method of upgrading, but does anyoneh have any input or experience trying this? If I can't get it working with the SuperDrive in my PB, I will just have to buy an external DVD-ROM.
    Thanks.
    XServe Gen 2 (1.33 G4, 1GB)   Mac OS X (10.2.x)   CD-ROM (NO SuperDrive)

    Hi
I have been reading this with interest as I am having trouble upgrading my slotload G4 X Serve 1.333Ghz to OSX Server 10.4 Tiger.
Basically, the slotload CD drive simply spits out all disks offered to it. I tried linking up an external CD drive via Firewire and everything progresses well but throws up an error as it is about to start actually installing the software.
So... I followed the method you outline here and:
    1. Once restarted in Target Disk mode and attached via Firewire to my PowerBook G4 17inch the server appears as a disk on the PowerBook desktop just as it should.
    2. I insert the X Server 10.4 updater DVD into the Powerbook and start the install.
    3. This triggers a restart from the DVD (as I would expect) BUT everytime it falls over part way through this during the first grey screen with the Apple logo on it. The clock graphic spins as normal at first but then just stops part way through the process never to start again. I have tried this on both my 17inch and 15inch PowerBooks and the same thing happens.
    Any ideas?
Any thoughts you have would be much appreciated

  • How do change boot disk from single user mode?

My G5 hangs when booting at the blue screen while "Loading printing services...". Attempting to boot into safe mode only hangs at the grey gear screen. It will, however, successfully boot into single user mode. I've run fsck but no change in bootability. I have another disk in the machine that has Tiger on it. How do I change the boot disk from the single user prompt?

You can hold c and boot off the installer disk and select disk utility repair disk/permissions
or you can hold option to boot off Mac OS X on another drive, like a clone and run Data Rescue to recvoer your files.
It does sound bad, you can try going through these
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106464
But I think you'll need a fresh install, hopefully you have been backing up/cloning to a external drive.

  • Will not boot up from DVD drive

HP pavilion slimline s3200n will recognize the DVD drive but it will not boot up from the drive

    Hi,
Try hitting the escape button from boot up. It normally gives you the boot options where you can select the DVD drive.
If you can't get into the boot options, try getting into the bios with F10 and change boot order options.

  • How do I boot Leopard from external hard drive?

I'm currently staring off into space... my 3 month old MBP seems to have finished its painfully long boot and all that appears the Leopard background. The local Mac guru isn't available until Monday but did tell me I need to boot from my external hard drive. Um, how do I boot from external hard drive?
The cause of the problem: inserting flash drive powering up.
Tried safe boot. Only difference was iCal reminder popped up in space.
Mac guru told me do NOT use install disks!
    Help!
    AR

Apple support has told me that you cannot boot a MBP from an external drive when Leopard is installed on a MBP.
    That is just plain wrong.
    1) Hook up your external drive. Use FireWire for better performance.
    2) Launch Disk Utility and highlight the actual drive icon at the left. Click on the Partition tab.
    3) In the Partition section, click on the Options button. Click on the radio button for "GUID Partition Map". This is the option you must use in order for a drive to be bootable on an Intel based Mac. Click OK.
    4) Set up your partitions however you want and click the Partition button at the lower right.
From here, you can either clone your internal drive to the external, or install Leopard on it from scratch.

  • G5 iSight Wont Boot Tiger From DVD!!

    Hello All,
I am a Mac amateur and I am having trouble with an iMac G5 iSight.
I am considered the IT man of the family but have little experience with Macs but understand that they don't install/function like pcs.
Here's my problem. My Uncle has this iSight G5 and has hardly ever used it since he bought it so I have took it off him. He has a user and password prompt at the startup(can't remember either). He says he doesn't want anything thats on the machine so I thought I'd do a clean install/erase from inserting the install disc and holding down the 'option' key at startup to boot to the dvd but when I do this, it only shows the Macintosh Disk and no Install Disc icon to start the install. I also heared that pressing the c key at start up will boot to the cd but this does nothing and just boots up OS X as normal of the hard drive. I am doing this with the original backup disks but also tried with a copy of OS X 10.4.2 but that isnt recognised when booting with the option key held. This is driving me mad. My brother has a 'non' iSight G5 and doing the option key reboot with the G5 restore disk you can see the install icon and same applies to the Tiger install DVD.
    Can anyone help?
The grey restore discs are OS X 10.4.2
    AHT v 2.5.3
    Disc v 1.1
    Thanks
    Scaseman
    iMac G5 iSight   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

Not only is installing the right files a concern with the Target Disk Mode method, the iSight's installer disk may refuse to install anything at all since in TDM the iSight's drive appears as just another drive attached to the non-iSight model. If the installer is like the one for my rev B model, the only OS install option also installs the bundled iLife apps. Since these apps are otherwise a retail product, the installer may check for a matching model & refuse to run because it will detect a non-iSight one.
    Other things to consider:
    A. The iSight model is not constructed like the two earlier iMac G5's to be user serviceable. The case back does not come off; rather, the front bezel & LCD screen must be removed to access the interior components. Since this was not designed to be done by users, this involves carefully removing a taped in place black film mask, removing hard to reach Torx head screws, & handling the bare LCD screen assembly. This would almost certainly void the warranty & might damage something if done by the inexperienced.
    B. Find out if the iSight model was registered with Apple by the original owner. If so, have it transfered to your name so you can call Applecare with your issues. Also consider the Applecare extended protection plan.

  • How to import/copy songs from DVD storage to iTunes Library

My PB harddrive had a major failure resulting in total data loss. I have all my Itunes music copied to 5 DVDs (roughly 22g or 12 days of music). How do I get these back into my iTunes music library? I have tried:
    a) drag & drop copy from DVD (desktop folder) to harddrive/users/myid/music/iTunes/iTunes Music folder. This results in a transfer, but on opening iTunes, none of the music appears in the library. I tried "Advanced->Consolidate Library" but nothing happens; still no songs in the Library.
    b) drag & drop copy from DVD (desktop folder) to new desktop folder and then to consolidate library. Again nothing.
If I go to the folder and double click on any mp3 file, the song starts playing in iTunes, and is added to the library. BUT, it is impractical for me to click thru every song (>4000 songs).
    HELP

There are 2 ways to go:
#1 from itunes Menu - File choose "Add to library..." then select your DVD/tracks
#2 launch iTunes, drag+drop those tracks onto "Library" in iTunes' left column beneath "Source"

  • MBP 15" 2010 doesn't allow boot up from DVD/CD.

My Macbook Pro 15" mid 2010 won't allow boot up from CD/DVD using the C key or choosing it from boot menu. It's running 10.6.7 and the boot up media i'm using are the origianl 10.6 and 10.5 disc. The CD's will show up when computer is booted up. Also the boot media works on other computers.

...and the boot up media i'm using are the origianl 10.6 and 10.5 disc.
Your mid-2010 computer requires a minimum of OS X 10.6.3 to boot. Only the disc that was shipped with it contains the necessary version. A retail 10.6 disc can't boot it, and no 10.5.x disc can boot it. Use the one that was shipped with it and no other.

  • How Do I Boot Up From External HD?

I want to boot up from the external HD, which I use to backup Time Machine. I turned Time Machine off but the backup HD still does not appear in Startup Disk.
Do I need to install Leopard on the external HD in order to boot up from it?

I completely misunderstood your question. I thought you had made a copy of your Time Machine backup and wanted to boot from that. You should be able to boot from a separate partition with a clone. If your MacBook is a PPC Mac you need to use the firewire option for your G-Tech to boot. If that isn't the issue there is a slight chance that a restart might work.
I've had good luck with using CCC to clone twice but I saw someone else post that they had one success and one failure so you might want to give cloning again another shot. Posting your question at Bombich.com might be a good idea if someone doesn't come up with a satisfactory solution for your problem here.

  • How to import archived images from DVD's

I have had a problem for some time (since LR 1.3) importing saved files from DVD's, or CD's. I am on Windows XP SR2. If you try to import more than one file from a DVD by selecting File/Import from disk, and then select files on a disk drive, it will not import them. One file at a time works, but not more than one file. I have been copying them to HD, then importing them. But today, after looking at the new Lightroom community help system site, I found a technique that works. Instead of hitting File/Import, go to Start/My computer, then select drive to import entire disk. Or select images, and DRAG them into Grid View. They will all import fine. Hope this helps others that have had this problem.

Hmmm. My 'puter ain't got no "Start/My computer" !!
A very useful tip for PC guys 'n' gals. Thanks from a Mac guy, and when -or if- I import from a DVD it may help.
