How do i break 1 long clip into a bunch of small clips

ok so i captured "now" about 60 min of footage. then i pressed dv start stop which made a bunch of markers. i selected all the markers and pressed "make sublip". now I want to make all the subclips except for like 2 - into their own independent quicktime movie. but for some reason every way I try it, it always makes another big single quicktime movie. what am I doing wrong?

I think you're making life a little tricky for yourself. read up on 'Log and Capture' and 'Batch Capture' as the appropriate way of capturing media.

  • Breaking a long clip into 'sub-clips'

So, I have a long clip that I've imported from, say a single long shot at an event.  I want to break that clip up into what used to be subclips.  I want to be able to treat those subclips as if they were clips - I want to be able to give them names, organize them in folders and I want to be able to drag them onto the timeline.
My question is, how does Apple think we should be doing this?  The way that I see recommended around the web is:
    Select your 'master' clip.
    Set In and Out points.
    Bring up the keyword editor.
Enter a new keyword for that 'subclip'
Doing this allows you to organize each 'subclip' by the keyword that's assigned to it and, by 'expanding' the master clip in the clip window, you can see the subclips/keywords in that master clip and you can drag them onto the timeline.
There are big issues with this, however.
There is no easy way to organize these subclips.  Lets say I make 40 subclips (keywords) from a master clip.  I then organize them into folders, 20 per folder, according to how I want them grouped. When I select a folder, I see a list of 20 clips - all named the same ... they are all named after the master clip!  I have no way of telling which clip is which without individully exanding each clip!  I could go back to the actual master clip by looking at it under the Event and exanding the master clip to see the list of all the 'keywords' - but then I have no way of orgainizing them - they're all just under that master clip.
What I want is not a 'keyword' - which is essentially a reusable identifier, used in this work-around as a single-use identfier - but a way of making parts of a master clip funtionally equivalent to the original master clip.  Just because I shot some things in one take - especially with event videography - that doesn't mean I want them grouped together for editing.  As far as I can see, there is no way to dissociate these subclips from the original master clip for the purposes of working with them.
This is basic functionality ... so am I missing something?  What is the non-workaround way of doing this?
Here is another explanation of the issue by a kindly blogger:

    Thank you!

Well, the difference is you can't do anything, like drag to the timeline or scrub, with the names in the library pane, only in the clips pane.
But you're right, that does suggest an improvement over using the folder to reveal the (sub)clips in the clip pane.  I could drag the library pane as wide as possible so I can see as much of the 'subclip names'/'keyword collection names' as possible.  Then expand the folder I want in the library pane, revealing those names.  Then I click on the subclip/keyword I want, which reveals the (sub)clip in the clips pane. I can then drag it to the timeline or scrub it etc there.  That's probably also an improvement over expanding the master clip in the clips pane, though still a right hacky pain.
I really don't think that being able to create subclips is an either/or with keywords.  They fullfill different needs.  Keywords do what they do well, but we still need the ability to create subclips, both from a logical workflow point of view and from a practical point of view, given how inconvenient this hack with keywords is.  It should be 5 step process ...
    1. You shoot your video, stopping and starting how it suits you at the during the shoot.
    2. You import the video.
    3. You break it up into clips for editing convenience.
    4. You label and group and fine tune those clips with the keywording system.
    5. You edit.
The ability to non-hackily do Step 3 is missing in Final Cut Pro X, it seems.

  • How do I cut a long clip into lots of shorter ones?

    Hi
I have an hour long clip that needs to be cut into about 20 sub clips and then each one has to be exported as a separate file. Is there any easy way to do this?

  • How do I cut a long clip to appear as separate clips in Browser?

    Hi,
I have a question, and I'm having a lot of trouble finding the answer.
I'm dutch so I dont really know how to search for it.
I am capturing Hi8 and Video8 clips into Final Cut Pro 6. The thing is that it is creating clips of one and a half hour, and I would like to know if I can cut the clips after capturing, so I get separate clips. But also to show them separately in the browser.
So cut a long clip into smaller ones, and let them behave as single clips to be edited. I know about the Log and Capture Workflow, but I would like to capture first, and then cut, instead of watching the whole tape beforehand and then capture it. Reason is there are a lot of tapes, and to play them 2 times a tape is time-consuming. Also the one who owns the tapes is going to edit them, and will be viewing the material after capturing is complete.
    Thanks in advance.

In addition to the "software" solution I was looking for a way to create parts of the long clip as "real" short clips. I found this way:
    - First capture the whole tape.
    - Then place markers where you want to cut.
    - In the browser drag the markers to a new bin.
    - Select the newly created Subclips. Dragging markers (in the browser) to a bin creates Subclips.
    - Go to File > Batch Export and export the clips.
    - Then bring them in Final Cut Server.
When exporting to the same format as the tape was captured I didnt notice quality loss.
Although I realize most people here probably already figured this out,
I thought it would be a good idea to post this solution anyway.

  • How to insert a very long string into a column of datatype 'LONG'

Can anyone please tell me how can I insert a very long string into a column of datatype 'LONG'?
I get the error, ORA-01704: string literal too long when I try to insert the value into the table.
Since it is an old database, I cannot change the datatype of the column. And I see that the this column already contains strings which are very long.
I know this can be done using bind variables but dont know how to use it in a simple query.
Also is there any other way to do it?

  • How do you make one long clip camera import FCPX

Does anyone out there know how to make one long clip from a DV camera import in FCPX???  Why the designers thought it was a good idea to chop the clips up during import is beyond me...

You're expecting one continuous take to import as one single clip, right?
From my experience with DV-format cameras like the Canon HV20, it's not unusual for there to be enough of a discontinuity (control track??) to create two or more successive clips when importing, dropping a small number of frames between clips. This could be caused by dirty heads or a tape that has been used more than it should.
A string of separate takes should import as separate clips, I believe.
    Hope this helps.

  • How do you make one long track into multiple tracks?

How do you make one long track in itunes into multiple tracks? Is there a way to do that?

I found another solution too through Garageband. I don't know if it was easier, but I liked this way of creating seperate tracks.
First, You put the long track into Garageband.
-then you create a New Basic Track under Track Tab-create as many of those as tracks you want to make
-also make sure the headphones button is lit up under each New Basic Track-this allows it to be a 'solo' track.
-then you can start cutting music-with the long strip find where you want to split into a new track and drag that half down into each New Basic Track.
-Once you are done, press Option Z and a purple little triangle will appear up by the measures. drag the triangle to the end of the first track-this allows it when sharing to itunes to just record the particular track you want, it puts a stop/end to that track.
-then, make sure the track you want to share is highlighted the bright orange and go to share, 'send to itunes'
-it will send that to itunes and you can rename it in itunes.
-Go back to Garageband-delete the first track you successfully shared and move the next one up to where that one was. Slide it accross to the left so it is at the beginning, press option Z and move the purple triangle where you want it to be...and you are good to repeat until all your tracks are done!
I am a very visual person, and this helped to see where I was cutting each track, just another way!

  • How do I split a long video into many short ones automatically

I want to split a 3.5 minute video into 210 small clips automatically. I certainly don't want to do that manually. is there a way to do this?

    yunabesaid
The Scene Detect in the media area is gone by Premiere Elements 9.0/9.0.1. But, you can right click the video's thumbnail in Organize/Media, select Run AutoAnalyzer which claims to be "detecting scenes". The latter is worth a try to see what it will do with your 3.5 min clip and its scenes.
Regarding the quality of your videos in Premiere Elements 9.0/9.0.1 editing and export, we would need lots more information on that
    a. properties of the source media (video and audio compression, frame size, frame rate, interlaced or progressive, file extension, pixel aspect ratio).
    b. what project preset you are setting for the project so that the project preset matches the properties of the source media
    c. types of edits
    d. choice of export and export settings, customized or default settings used
    e. computer or TV DVD or Blu-ray player.
Please review, supply the requested information, and then we will plan troubleshooting strategy. Also, we would need some idea of your computer environment - Windows or Mac 32 or 64 bit version...
    Lots ot put together.
Looking forward to your follow up.
    Thank you.

  • How can I  export a long podcast into small individual MP3s FAST?

So doing recording and voiceover for some side money and normally would do stuff in FCP. Long story recording everything in garage band. I need to clean it up and was ready to export when I found out they wanted each sentence delivered in a separate MP3 file. No exceptions This is 17 minutes recorded, so many files I have to create and export to MP3. I have no idea how i can do that quickly or even slowly without the ability to choose in and outs like I do on FCP. Help? CB

Use the yellow cycle bar (press c to make it visible) to mark exactly what passage you want to export and share to disk. Should be a very quick job. Just make sure you name each exported file after sharing, otherwise you'll get confused!

  • How to break up a String into multiple array Strings?

How do I break up a string into a bunch of String arrays after the line ends.
    For example,
    JTextArea area = new JTextArea();
this is a string that i have entered in the area declared above
now here is another sting that is in the same string/text area
this is all being placed in one text field
    Sting input = area.getText();
now how do I break that up into an array of strings after each line ends?

Ok I tested it out and it works.
So for future refrence to those that come by the same problem I had:
To split up a string when using a textfield or textarea so that you can store seperate sections of the string based on sperate lines, using the following code:
    String text = area.getText() ;
    String[] lines = text.split("\n") ;
    This will store the following
    this is all one
    entered string
    into two arrays

    Pls guide me its urgent.

    Hai.
    check this.
Long Texts are stored in tables
    STXH - header
    STXL - details.
if you want to read the texts you can use Fun Module  READ_TEXT
Any Application document Header and Item Long texts are stored in STXH table with the 4 parameters OBJECT,ID,NAME and LANG
These texts are fetched from database using READ_TEXT fun module by passing the above 4 parameters.
Double click on the text, from the text editor menu GOTO-> HEDAER
you will find the all above 4 parameters
so accordingly you have to pass to the fun module READ_TEXT to fetch the texts.

  • CS 4 Cut one long clip in to smaller clips

How would I cut one long clip in to many smaller clips and then put those clips back in to the bin for later
I have a few long clips but only want peices of them

Bill gave me advice on this about 6 months ago, as I had the same question with CS3...I imagine in this instance CS4 is the same.
    Here's what he said:
    1) leave extra room on the in out points when the big clip is in the source monitor and you are deciding on the subciip length...so if you have to adjust later you have "handles" to expand a little bit ...
    2) if you dont have to make subclips "dont" ...just drag from source monitor to timeline...using the in out points...as it makes no real difference to the original video file...its just code in the program...  however, in my case I wanted to the subclips due to learning about "scripted" stuff and 3 cameras...
Then I discovered (tutorial)  that by choosing in out points in the source monitor and dragging that straight to the project panel it automatically creates the subclip and all you have to do is "name" it...or leave default timecode name...saved a lot of time cause I was using the mouse to choose "create subclip" etc  before I learned about that shortcut
