How do I burn a DVD on my new iMac to play on external DVD player

I have a new iMac at work (3.5 GHz Intel Core i7), running on OS X Yosemite, and I'm trying to figure out how to burn a DVD that can be played on an external DVD player. I have a disc burner connected, but just noticed that iDVD (the way I used to burn video files) is no longer part of my installed applications.
Thanks for any help.
JC

If iDVD was not preinstalled on your Mac you'll have to obtain it by purchasing a copy of the iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailier like Amazon.com: ilife 09: Softwareor eBay.com.  Why, because iDVD (and iWeb) was discontinued by Apple over a year ago.
Why iLife 09 instead of 11?
If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides  themes from iDVD 5-7.  The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:
This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:
You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.
If you're creating a slideshow in iPhoto and want to add it to an iDVD project export the slideshow out of iPhoto as a QT movie file via the Export button in the lower toolbar.  Select Size = Medium or Large.
Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • How do I burn cd's on the new iMac?

I have heard that the new iMac does not have the ability to receive a cd or dvd. How will I burn images onto a cd of the photos of my artwork? I have to do this often when I apply to juried shows, send samples of my work to galleries, apply for commissions, etc.
I am presently on a 2007 iMac which is using Mountain Lion....OSX 10.8.2
    Thanks.

I have heard that the new iMac does not have the ability to receive a cd or dvd.
I would purchase this instead. It can be equipped with 2 optical drives, BUILT-IN.

Further, you can change out hard drives in 60 seconds with no tools and have any type of display you wish.

  • How can I burn a playlist to a disc which will play in any CD player?

I am trying to burn a playlist to a disc that I can play in a CD player. I have a HP Lightscribe DVD/CD burner. The software is Cyberlink Power2Go. I have wasted two blank dvd discs so far. They will play on my computer, but that's not what I need. I want to play them in a regular CD player, such as I have in my truck.
When I choose "audio CD" I get a message that "I have chosen a CD but have inserted a blank DVD" and it won't let me choose anything else.

You need to burn onto CD-R or CD-RW discs. You cannot burn to a blank DVD disc for the purposes of playing CD-Audio. They are different media with different characteristics, just like you can't play a DVD in a CD player.

How do I install a new program from a dvd on my new iMac?

Buy an external USB optical drive like the Apple USB SuperDrive.
Use another Mac with an optical drive by using Target Disk Mode.
Borrow a Mac with an optical drive and clone the DVD to a USB flash drive.

  • Created a movie in IMOVIE and transferred it to dvd but cannot get it to play on my dvd player.  i downloaded the free Burn program since i don't have idvd on my new mac  the dvd comes up disk error or cannot read

created a movie in IMOVIE and transferred it to dvd but cannot get it to play on my dvd player.  i downloaded the free Burn program since i don't have idvd on my new mac  the dvd comes up disk error or cannot read.  I am using a dvd-r dvd and my dvd player says that it uses this type of dvd.  Any suggestions.  I spoke to an Apple Support person who helped me burn the dvd but it still didn't work...help???

There's a difference between a data DVD, and a DVD-Video.  I believe you made a data DVD, which can't be played in a video player.  The Burn feature of the Finder can't author a DVD-V, just data discs.
I assume you made a Project, and put clips from your Event Library into the Project.  But then, how did you output your Project, using the SHARE menu?
When I pull down iMovie '11s SHARE menu, "iDVD..." is one of the options.  It's the job of iDVD to make the menu that appears when you insert a DVD into your player (that says the title, and chapters, and extras, etc.).  You need software that will made a DVD-V disc.  Lacking that, you might be able to go to Share/Export Movie... or Share/Export using QuickTime... to get your video into a format that software like Roxio's Toast could burn.

Congratulations on the new Mini. Are you saying you tried burning and it does not play, or do you want to burn it only for the computer to be able to play it?
OS X Mountain Lion: Burn a CD or DVD may help.

    No you cannot.
You can only make a backup dvd of your movies, fo use in itunes on yur computer.  You cannot burn a video product to dvd to watch on a dvd player, just as you cannot copy a dvd that you purchase.

  • Does the new imac come with a cd/dvd player/burner?

Does the new imac come with a cd/dvd player/burner?

It's $80.00. You can buy other externals for less, I think, but only the Apple one will work with Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows and any other applications that will only work with an "internal" optical drive.
If this isn't important for you, then explore less expensive alternatives. Check out OWC for example.

  • How can I use Aperture 3 on my new iMac with Maverick?

How can I use Aperture 3 on my new iMac with Maverick?

Do you own a copy of Aperture, perhaps bought for another Mac?
If you have not bought Aperture, you need to buy it from the AppStore.
But if you own Aperture and have it bought from the AppStore on another Mac, sign into theAppStore on your new iMac with the same AppleID you used to buy Aperure on your other Mac.  Then look at the "Purchased" tab of he AppStore. It show Aperture, with the "Install" button to the right. Simply press the "Install" button and download it to your new iMac.  Or if you have bought Aperture on a CD/DVD, run the installer from the CD/DVD on your new mac and immediately run software update to upgrade the Aperture 3. version to version that will run with Mavericks.

Works the same way. Download the CC app and install it, then take it from there after signing in. Sign out on the old machine, if you no longer use it.

  • How do I sync old devices to a new iMac without our old iTunes library? Our orig iMac died with the library on it.

Our old iMac died and we got a new one. The problem is that our entire iTunes library was on the old iMac and all of our iPads and iPhones were synced to the old dead iMac. How do we sync the devices to the new iMac now?

Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself independently backed up against loss.  To use a device with a new computer you transfer the content from the old computer (or its backup) directly to the new computer, not the device to the new computer. Media syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only purchases from iTunes Store
For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software.  See this document by turingtest2: Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991
