How do I calibrate a battery backup using OS X 10.8?

If I connect a APC Power-Saving Back-UPS Pro 1000, Part Number: BR1000G to my Mac computer using a USB cable, running Mac OS X 10.8, how do I calibrate the battery backup using the UPS service that is built into the operating system?

I contacted APC Technical Support at 800-555-2725 and they told me that they have discontinued making the PowerChute Personal Edition software for the Mac and the OS X UPS feature also doesn’t do calibration. They said if I wanted to get the most accurate reading on how much runtime my APC battery backup would provide they recommended that I do a manual calibration. They also recommended that I do a manual calibration once a month or so to help improve battery life.

  • How soon to calibrate new battery

I just received my replacement battery from Apple today. What I am concerned with though, is how soon am I to calibrate it?
Honestly, I am weary of doing it tonight, as here at the school dorm, it is all I have for entertainment, and if I have it sleeping for the rest of the night, I might as well just go to bed... UGGHHH!
Any suggestions? Can I just wait till tomm night???

No, it's no big deal. Calibration only assures that the display of remaining battery life is accurate for your battery. Otherwise it's not required as far as using the battery. You can wait 24 hours or 24 days if you want. Just know that until the battery is calibrated the display of remaining battery life may not be reliable.

  • How set up Capsule for first backup using ethernet

    Friends,
I thought I had this solved, but my problem is the following:
    1. For speed use ethernet in initial backup (2-3 times faster than by using airport)
    2. Connect ethernet cable from LAN port at Capsule (TC) to laptop
    3. Enable ethernet and disable airport.
    well well
I apparently go wrong by using Airport Utility (AU) for this. Everything goes fine. I see the TC as a shared device in the finder, but as soon as I close down the Airport connection for doing the ethernet backup the whole TC disappears. If I don't close down the Airport I see the backup starting and I se the TC in the finder but I suspect the backup does not use the ethernet cable.
    Where do I go wrong??
    regards,
    pyry

    Welcome to the discussions!
You don't need to use AirPort Utility. Do not turn off your wireless from there.
Simply +turn off the wireless on your computer+ by clicking on the fan shaped AirPort icon at the top of your screen.
Connect an ethernet cable from your computer to one of the LAN ports on the Time Capsule
    Start the backup
When the backup is complete, you can turn the wireless back on at your computer and disconnect the ethernet cable from your computer and the Time Capsule.

  • How to create custom signal/battery bar using j2me?

first of all im trying to create the symbian UI from scratch .... but j2me comes with a fixed signal bar ... can i change it ???
second is it possible 2 create the UI using j2me ??
    thank u

    Hi,
the top bar management is always under the operating system control. You can use full screen mode to cover full screen, however some diveces can still show the bar. Another option is to use Game Canvas instead of Canvas which might on some devices utilize even "more full" screen mode.
Some manufacturers add special .jad properties to utilize really full screen.
Summary: this is really manufacturer/device dependent.
Of course you can build your own UI completely - simply using the Canvas and paint it on your own. There are several UIs available for Java ME. However the most comprehensive and free is probably the LWUIT supported directly by Oracle. See: [http://lwuit.java.net/|http://lwuit.java.net/] and/or [http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javame/javamobile/download/lwuit/index.html|http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javame/javamobile/download/lwuit/index.html]

  • Backup using RMAN

    Hi,
I want to perform the first backup with RMAN and I used this command and I got error:
    RMAN> BACKUP AS COPY DATABASE;
can not backup or copy active file in noarchivelog mode.
But in order to turn on the log_mode to ARCHIVELOG, first I need to do shutdown the db and perform the backup. Right?
So how can I get my first backup using RMAN if the log mode is in NOARCHIVELOG mode?
I also performed controlfile autobackup on but I'm not sure the controlfiles are being backed up. How can I verify this and where I can find the controlfile backup file?
    Thanks,

    Hi
Yes, you must shutdown the database and set it to start in ARCHIVELOG mode.
After that you can connect to the rman catalog and the target database and execute a backup.
    eg. RMAN> backup database;
You can search other example posted by me:
    eg.
    - Re: Backup with RMAN
    - Re: How do i set up this backup strategy?
To be sure that you backed up your control file you can issue the rman-command:
    RMAN> list backup of controlfile summary;

Here's the article on how to calibrate your battery:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1490
I don't know if you will be able to calibrate your battery successfully at this point or not. If you can, it will likely look even more unhealthy.
Sadly, I think your battery is on its way out. As Retired Engineer points out, it hasn't had enough usage for optimum performance at only 69 cycles in close to 3 years. They also will deteriorate over time, whether or not you calibrate them or use them properly.
You might find Battery University an interesting read:
    http://www.batteryuniversity.com/partone-21.htm
Also this kb article from Apple:

I don't think there is any way to bring this battery back to health. Unfortunately, the cure is going to be a new battery.
    Good luck!

  • Is there a log entry indicating the use of battery backup?

I have a Late 2013 iMac, 27" i7 780m running Mavericks 10.9.4 - Is there an entry in any of the System Report logs that shows whether or not the computer had to make use of a UPC battery backup?
I've experienced some of the same issues people have had with their system not waking from sleep, having to resort to using the power button to get things moving again. Today, however, we had a serious thunderstorm and when I got home the system was shut down (or possibly not wanting to wake from sleep - the iMacs have no glowing light like my old Mac Pro, so there's no way to tell if the thing is shut down, a "heavy sleeper", or what). I'm asking the above question because if the system ever does have to rely on the battery backup while I'm away I want a way to confirm the system is actually using the UPC and shutting down properly (via Power Management settings) and not simply getting knocked out by a power failure.
It's somewhat unrelated, but the not-waking-from-sleep issue factors into this because that problem seems to be unrepeatable under any controlled circumstances. The support documents starts with disconnecting peripherals that might cause an issue, but the problem pops up so infrequently (weeks apart) there's no way to know if a disconnected USB hub is the culprit or a red herring. Today, for example, I'm left wondering if my issue was a power outage (the UPC should have taken care of a safe shutdown) or if I had an iMac not wanting to wake from sleep.

Go to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>Manage Storage.  Your backups are listed at the top, along with their sizes.  Note: this will only list your most current backup.  You may have your previous two backups available too but you cannot access any size information about them.

  • Satellite L755-S5153 How to calibrate bew battery?

No matter how long I charge my new battery, the max charge it will report is 99%.  Will calibrating fix this problem?  And how do I calibrate a new battery?
    Thanks for the help!

This is not a calibration problem.
Newer windows versions keep the charging % at 99 for reducing Li battery stress (oh, yes, they do) and give you a longer usefeul life.

  • How do you calibrate the iPad battery?

How do you calibrate the iPad battery and is it necessary to discharge battery 100%. I have  the 3 rd generation iPad, it has been almost a year since I purchased it and the battery when fully charged reads 100%. Recently, I visited my local Jump Plus store and the staff said I should drain the batteries on my iPad & iPhone completely until they are dead and recharge once a month. Is this accurate?  It is my understanding that you should not drain the batteries completely? Also, is that the same as calibrating the battery?

For proper reporting of the battery’s state of charge, be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month (charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down).

  • How to preserve battery life ~ used to last all day, now it runs out by lunchtime

How to preserve battery life ~ used to last all day, now it runs out by lunchtime

I would advise updating to iOS 7. It might improve your battery and the bugs are worked out by now.
If not wanting to update because of the new look, here are some tips:
-Turn off bluetooth when not needed.
-Connect to wifi and turn off cellular data when possible.
-When not around wifi, turn wifi off.
-Keep your screen at around 50% brightness.
-Disbale certain apps or features in Settings<Privacy<Location Services if they are not necessary.
-Close out of apps in the multitasking bar.
-Enable airplane mode when you plan on not using your phone for a while.
Hopefully these tips help you. If your battery does eventually get too bad, you can get it changed out by apple. If youve had your device for under a year, you can take it into an Apple store and theyll give you a new phone in return. Have a good night and good luck!
