How do I change default style in TextEdit?

How do I change the default style in TextEdit -- that is, the style that a new document will automatically have? (In particular I want new docs to have certain ruler and spacing parameters.)
I know how to add favorite styles and remove them -- but want to change the default style so that I don't have to select my favorite every time I create a new rtf document in TextEdit or other programs.
I suspect this is simple -- but I can't figure it out or find it anywhere. EXTREMELY obliged for any solution.

That will change the default for all new documents. That's the most formatting control avaiable in Text Edit. For more control over your docs try Apple Pages, neoOffice or MSWord.

I see where you mean but I'm not familiar with the 'language'
of CSS. Currently, the background of the body (or probably the div
container) is set to none on this page. So visually, I have a white
background with black letters. I want to place a gradient image in
this container instead of the 'none'. The coding with "none isn't
even the CSS code because I vaguely remember deleted it because I
thought I would never need it. So can you tell the CSS code I need
to place this image in the #container (I think that's where it

You need to try and explain your problem again. I'm not exactly sure what you are trying to describe the problem as. What do you mean you defaulted pictures to open phone? What default are you referring to here?
You can import pictures from the Camera Roll of the iPhone to the computer, and you can sync pictures from the computer to the iPhone using iTunes, but I don't know what you mean when you say defaulted pictures.

Sorry for the goofed answer. Most people are looking to set the margins and I looked over that you were interested in the tabs.
To save tabs in fixed positions that will appear with every new document, you must modify the default template. You can't open the template from the desktop. If you do, it will open as a standard document. You must open it from the Open dialogue box from within Word. With Word in the foreground, press Command+O and navigate to:
/Users/your_account/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Office/User Templates/
Open the file Normal.dotm
Set your tabs and save the file. Close the template. All new documents will now open with those preset tabs.

How to create a default Style for several Content Areas

I have not been able to figure out how to create default styles/nav bars/etc... that can be used between SEVERAL Content Areas, and/or for any new Content Area. It seems to me that what is created in one Content Area, is not available for use in any other Content Area.
Being that I'd like to keep the Administrative overhead as low as possible, I wonder if anyone has and/or knows how to create a default style, etc.. and use it with each Content Area across an Enterprise site???

How Can I Change Default Zoom Settings For Safari?

I just got my new iMac and hate the fact that everytime I open Safari everything is small and centered directly in the Safari screen. How can I change the default settings so it either zooms in more or is in a landscaped mode so I don't have two big white patches on the sides of my window?

The only way I know of, (and that I use) is as follows:
Open textedit and create a new document.
Add the following 3 lines to the file
body {
zoom: 175%
Save the file as "somename.css". I called mine defaultzoom.css and saved it in Documents.
In Safari go to Preferences | Advanced.
In the Style sheet: dropdown box choose "other" and browse to the location of your somename.css file.
That's it, now webpages will open with the default zoom level you used in the file (I use 175% but you need to tweak it for your screen size). Also, I do run into situations where some pages don't render correctly. If that happens you can go back to Safari | Preferences | Advanced and change the Style sheet dropdown box to none until you are done viewing that paticular website. Then just put it back when you are done.

I am trying to code the text "About Us Learn more about us!" which I surrounded it with a paragraph and then tried to change the styles of it but it doesn't work. I'm also trying to figure out how to shorten the distance between the paragraph from top to bottom. Any help or suggestion?

The first thing I would recommend is that you move all of your CSS styles to a separate document that you then link to your HTML.Once you've done this, add text styling classes to the CSS file to cover all of the "looks" that you envision. For example, you might code all text within a <p> tag to be a uniform:

and code alternatives:

etc. Of course, you are using the font of your choice and size units (whethers ems or pixels), and adding in any other styles you want such as color, weight, line height, letter spacing. You'll end up with some THML code that looks like this, if you're putting it all into one paragraph):
<p><span class="text1>These words begin my paragraph with emphasis</span> while these words get general emphasis. <span class="text2">These words will get some emphasis</span>, but not as much as the text 1 class. <span class="text3>These words would receive lesser emphasis</span> than the default text identified with the "p" tag styling.</p>

I have an Epson Photo PX720WD.
When I print photos directly from Finder they always print on the A4 plain paper I have in the tray rather than the 6 x 4 photo paper I want them to. The print option in Finder doesn't give me any opportuntiy to select settings like, for instance, iPhoto.
I don't want to import all pics into iPhoto as i like being able to print them from Finder so does anyone know how I can change the settings, preferably to make the 6 x photo setting the deafult?

thanks for the reply.......I'm on 10.7.5 but I think the issue is that I'm not printing from an App, I want to print direct from Finder and when I select cmd/p or go through the file menu and select print the dialogue box doesn't appear or isn't an option.
On all Apps that I've printed from cmd/p brings up the dialogue box or going to the file menu the print option looks like this:
Print....
Direct from Finder there are no dots meaning no dialogue box will appear.
I have about 50 pics I want to print so if I can change the default settings then I can simply cmd/p every time knowing that they'll print the way I want them.
I would also like to change the default settings as I print pics about 95% of the time so it's less hassle to change it when I want a plain A4 print.
Any ideas?!!

I just got a new MacBook Pro and after installing the correct drivers and setting up my printer, it now prints 2-sided by default. How do I change this default setting?
I'm using a MacBook Pro, OS X 10.7.4, printing over AirPort to a KonicaMinolta office machine. I had this same setup with my old MBP (OS X 10.6.8) with no problems whatsoever.

Many vendors have started releasing printer drivers that have been defaulted to two-sided (duplexed). I would assume that the printer driver you are using on 10.6 is an older version compared to that being used on Lion.
There are two possible actions. One is to create a Preset that has the driver set to single sided and use this preset when you don't want duplex. The other is to modify the PPD for the printer so that it is set to single sided by default.
Making a Preset is easy. Open a document and select to print. Make the changes in the print dialog to set single sided printing and then open the Presets menu and choose to save this change for this KM printer. Then whenever you print to the KM just ensure the Preset is set to whatever name you gave to the single sided setting.
As for modifying the PPD, this is done via the CUPS web page.
To access CUPS, open Safari and type
http://127.0.0.1:631/printers
This will open the CUPS Printer administration page and will show all the printers currently configured on the Mac. For the printer that you wish to change the defaults for, click its name in the Queue Name column.
Clicking the printer name will open the printer administration page for that printer. Here you need to click on the Administration drop menu and then select Set Default Options.
This will show a new page with four menu headings (links); Options Installed, General, Banners and Policies. Select General. Scroll down the list until you find an entry like "Finishing" or something similar that shows the single sided and two sided setting. Change this from 2 sided to 1 sided.
With the option selected you then need to scroll down the list to the bottom of the page where you will see the ‘Set Default Options’ button. Click this button and you will then be presented with an authentication window. Enter the account name and password that has been set as the admin for this Mac. And then press the Log In button. You will then see another page stating that the information change is completed.
Now you can open an application and select to print and then check the output is set to single sided.
