How do i change hard drive access from read only to read and write.

I bought a used Macbook late 2008, core 2 duo, 2,4 ghz.  The start up hard drive will let me install programs but I can not move data on to the hard drive.  Permissions are set to "Read Only".  How can I change it to "Read and Write"?

Create a new account as mentioned in this thread and then delete the original malfunctioning one. Or use an OS X installation disk to do a wipe and install of a new OS X.

  • Help! how to apply Seagate hard-drive update from DVD drive on G4 Powermac

    Short version of story:
Just put Sonnet PCI SATA card in G4 Digital Audio Powermac running Tiger. Have replaced two IDE drives with *Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1 TB hard drive*. It's recognized and working fine. EXCEPT: this is the now infamous drive ST31000340AS that WILL most certainly fail if it does not get the firmware update that Seagate has made available. (These drives are failing like crazy-- Google for info, do not buy!) I have the firmware update on CD as an ISO file (of course Seagate makes nothing that it Mac friendly but this has worked for other Mac users). But when I try to flash the firmware by starting from the CD ("C" key held down), nothing happens. The G4 just goes ahead and starts Tiger 10.4.11. I have also tried holding down "O + F + option + control on start up. I'm not getting anywhere.
Since the drive is functional and it's the only drive in the G4, what am I doing wrong? Help!

I just got off the phone with Seagate who say that while my model numbers are the affected drives, my two drives have serial numbers that do NOT need a firmware update. (Yet!)
However, I'm not feeling very lucky. I took these two drives from my Maxtor One Touch III 2 TB external hard-drive because it was failing intermittently-- "now you see me, now you don't." Not very good for a backup drive! But Maxtor/Seagate is providing nothing for Maxtor One Touch III owners under warranty but another refurbished (as in previously failed) Maxtor One Touch III and asking hundreds of dollar$ for data recovery. There is not even a firmware update at this point. People should be avoiding Seagate Barracuda drives (these used to be the best of the best, but not now) or at least researching them *very thoroughly* before buying.
I guess, the good news is that I don't have to struggle with getting a firmware update to work on my PowerMac. Though thanks to you both I will know what to do if these drives eventually do need a firmware update. The other good news is that I got all my data back by pulling the drives from their enclosure which apparently causes overheating. I violated my warranty, pulled the drives, and got all my data back.
At the moment both of my Barracuda drives are happily purring away in my PowerMac G4 giving that old baby 2 Tb to play with. (I use iPartition so getting the drives recognized on the G4 isn't a problem.) And since I have my new iMac 3.06ghz 24" with all my data backup on WD external drives, I will only use the G4 networked for extra storage (backup for my backup). (I am also using Disk Warrior and Data Rescue II to keep an eye on these drives.)
    Thanks again for the advice.

    Also, I found this:
MOST IMPORTANT - If you have a reasonable suspicion that you may have an affected drive - do not power the unit off - make fresh backups immediately. The power-on process is what triggers the failure.

  • How do I change hard drive and re-install OS?

    Hello,
I just bought a used Macbook Air A1465. I am new to Mac so needed some help with it.
I am looking to upgrade the hard drive since it came with a small 60GB. Can someone tell me which hard drive I need?
Is this one good? Seems pretty cheap! http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=271568710531
Once I install it how do I re-install the OS and use my product key? I don't want to have to purchase the OS all over again!
    Thank you!

  • How do i change hard drives in my envy 17

So finally get my new laptop for work, first thing made image of drive and cloned drive to 2 separate drives, 1 drive to stash for emergency use second drive an SSD to replace 1 TB drive. Low and behold new HP Envy cant simply pull old (new) drive out and put in new and install first as storage as I was planning to do. Can some one please tell me if I can take out the drive and replace it with the SSD I bought for this laptop ? I dont even care if I can use the 1 TB it came with I want the SSD in there. Before I even booted it up I was looking for the drive. I really just want instructions on how to pull back panel off or keyboard out and put in different drive. Please, any help would be appreciated. Yes I have all the tools to do it.
    This question was solved.

    Here is the Manual:
    Manual
See Page 64. You have to remove the top cover but not the motherboard. This does jeopardize the warranty but HP will not void the warranty if you do the upgrade successfully.
This series of little videos will also be helpful:

Assuming you did the clone correctly you should just be able to swap the SSD into the place of the hard drive.

  • How large of a hard drive can I install on dual G5, and do I need more RAM?

I recently had a situation in which my dual-processor 2.0 G5 was completely refurbished by Apple repair-new logic board, both processors, video card, thermistor, all new. Finally it has been working well after a month of trips back and forth from the Apple store. I have two internal hard drives installed on my G5, both 300GB, one for OS applications, and one for audio. I am running out of space on my main hard drive, and so I recently purchased a Maxtor 1TB hard drive, now manufactured by Seagate, from Fry's. After having my G5 refurbished, I was having an issue with my Samsung 930B monitor going into sleep mode when I boot-up from a CD, but other than that G5 was working fine. I removed the main 300GB hard drive from slot #1 and put it into slot #2, from which I had removed my audio hard drive. I installed the Maxtor drive in slot #1 and reformatted it for Mac using my laptop with ATA/USB cables previously purchased for data transfer. This took about 14 hours as I used the "zeros" option. After that I hooked up the internal cables to both drives and tried to boot up from Leopard in order to install it on the Maxtor drive, but again my monitor went into to sleep mode. We went to the Apple store to try to see if there was an issue with the computer, but everything worked fine with their monitors and CD's, as well as my CD. So there is some kind of issue with my monitor, probably software as it works fine when booting up from the main hard drive, and also was fine when I did its self-test function. While at the Apple store, they installed Leopard from their hard drive which took about 30 minutes.
My problem is this: When I arrived home, I turned on my G5, which had been set to boot from my new Maxtor drive and complete the Leopard setup process, which we had decided to do at home as it would have taken another 20 minutes in the Apple store. The G5 turned on, chimed, I got the Apple screen with the wheel, but then after that my monitor goes into sleep mode. I can hear Leopard's setup intro playing through the speakers, but the screen is in sleep mode. So I reboot holding down the option key so I can boot up from my old (300GB) main hard drive, now in slot #2. This works and the monitor screen does not go to sleep. However, as I am browsing on the web to check for issues concerning this monitor, the G5 freezes, and I get a screen with black bars with writing in them and various technical language across the screen. This happened several times after rebooting. Finally I shut the computer down. I am going to try removing the new hard drive and putting both old ones back in and see if the G5 stops crashing. I think the monitor issue is a separate issue, and I am more concerned with the crashing, as previous to the new hard drive installation the G5 was working fine, monitor fine, other than the issue when booting up from a CD. Do I need more memory? Is the 1TB hard drive too large for my dual-processor 2.0 G5 and overloading it? Would I be better off with a 500GB drive? Would appreciate advice from persons with experience in this area. Thank you.

I have replaced my 5 year old G5 with a Mac Pro, as the G5 just had too many issues, even after replacing all major components (logic board, both processors, video card, etc.) Once I took out the 1 TB hard drive from my old G5, it stopped having the kernel panic issue. Nonetheless I had been through a lengthy repair process previous to this issue, so I didn't care to trust an older machine any longer, especially since being told by an Apple tech that the "new" parts were really just older parts stockpiled from a central location. Could be new, could be refurbished. Apple was kind enough to credit the money we had spent on the G5 repairs towards the purchase of my Mac Pro.

apple please i need your help, look i heva an imac 21 inches and the hard drive switch from hsf to fat 32 and i cant accsess to the os, i'm trying to solve the problem with the disk drill to recove my data from ann external hard drive with os x, and it is supposed to recover everything, but my real thing is, when i preview a video that i recover the video doesn't preview what happens is that the quicktime logo appears,
my question is when that happens what does it means?

You are non addressing Apple on these forums, we are all end users like yourself. Take your machine into an Apple Store or AASP, they will help you clear up the mess you have created.

Unfortunately, that drive is long gone, probably back to the mfr. Drives are not returned when they are exchanged. You can go by and ask them, but the chances are slim to none.

You could try Paragon HFS+ for Windows. That would allow you to read and write files from a Mac-formatted drive.

If you still have the receipt or other proof of purchase, you can ask Apple to send you the serial. Otherwise, bad luck mate.. Good news is, you can now buy Logic Pro 9 from App Store for just 199 USD

  • How do i get my external hard drive permissions changed from read only to read and write?

Does anyone know how to get an external drive to unlock the permissions from read only to read and write? Without reformatting or buying an app?

    Hey P,
If you single click on your external drive icon on the desktop and then goto
'File > Get Info' a window will display the information for that drive. At the
bottom of the window their should be a check box that either allows you
to recognise users of not. You probably want to uncheck this box.
Or... You can keep the user option and just change the permissions
using the same Get Info window.

  • HT1766 HOW CAN I CHANGE MY BACKUP FOLDER FROM THE C DRIVE TO ANOTHER?????

HOW CAN I CHANGE MY BACKUP FOLDER FROM THE C DRIVE TO ANOTHER????? because my c drive in the windows computer gets filled and i need to back up my ipod to a portable hard disk.. bt i dont know how to do it.. plz help

you can't change the backup folder as far as I know, but you can choose to move backups. The information you need can be found in this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4946
Where iTunes backups are stored on your computer
The folder where your backup data are stored varies depending on the computer's operating system.   Make sure the backup folder is included in your periodic data-backup routine.
iTunes places the backup files in the following places:
    Mac:  ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
    Windows XP:  \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: To quickly access the Application Data folder, click Start, and choose Run. Type %appdata% and click OK.
    Windows Vista and Windows 7:  \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: To quickly access the AppData folder, click Start. In the search bar, type %appdata% and press the Return key.
    Hope this helps

You will need to use third-party software to transfer music from your phone to the iTunes Library. I recommend Phone to Mac - Pod to Mac | Macroplant.com.
