How do I change my computer name?

My computer is being assigned a new name by the operating system.  A window opens stating that this computer is already being used on the network and a new name is automatically assigned.  For example, my computer name is drp-mbp and then it is assigned the name drp-mbp(1).  Why is this happening and how can I change the name back to what it was?
Thank you.

It would appear that you either have other devices on your network using the same Computer Name, or the system has messed up and "thinks" it has found another device with the same name. See this discussion: Computer name keeps changing.: Apple Support Communities.
Also:
Mac OS X will automatically increment the computer name when it thinks there are duplicate names on the local network. are your other devices also seeing all these different ghost iMacs on the network?
what is your network setup? what/where is the main router? and how many routers do you have? is only one router doing DHCP duties?
it's possible that your iMac is being served multiple IP addresses and therefore appears multiple times on network. alternatively you might have some static IP addresses set up that are conflicting with your DHCP setup.
btw, the free version of IP Scanner will show you up to 6 devices. if you don't want to buy a licence, you can simply keep hitting the rescan button to try and get a different combination of devices shown: http://10base-t.com/macintosh-software/ip-scanner
Do you have more than one router in your network?

  • How can I change my computer name

My work computer is named the previous person who had it who's not hear any more.
Now it says the name is: "his name -  my name"
How can I change the name to just my name?
    Thx,
    Steven

Thanks Eric. I note a few differences though.
First there is no "Users & Groups" icon in the top level of System Prefs. However while exploring I found under "Sharing" you can change the computer's name there. One would think it's in Accounts, but it's not. I did add myself as an Admin when I first got  here but that just appended my name with a hyphen to the previous employee name
So I changed Computer name to my name in the field in Sharing and then saw there's an Edit button. There you can change the lost hostname, whatever that is. I shouldn't do these things without knowing, I know, but I changed it but it doesn't allow spaces and adds hyphens. Since I have a Home comper, I named this work computer differently and hypens were added plus the suffix; .local.
There is a "Use dynamic global hostname checkbox which was unchecked so I left it that way. Do you know what the global hostname does and if I need to check it? What happens when you do?
Making the local hostname: my name-V1-Computer.Local, didn't change the Computer name field when you return to it. It still has the name I gave it before assigning the .local name.
But if I go into MM for example and then Advance to see which computers sync to MM, I see my home computer and work computer which is still named: previous emloyee's Computer - Steven Lastname (This Computer). So obviously the complete computer name hasn't changed.
The article you give above gets you to the Directory Utility in Utilities to change the Root info.
It says after open the lock icon: Enter an administrator account name and password, then click OK.
But the only thing to do in the main Directory Utility is: Add/configure a Directory server, again don't know what that does, but clicking it all you can do is set the drop down to: Open Directory or Active Directory, fill in the Server Name or IP Address field.
There are no fields for "enter admin account and pw" which I assume is me since I'm listed that way in Sys Prefs > Accounts, and the only Admin listed for this computer.
So I'm at an impasse. I don't see why this is all sy cryptic, but assume it's for security purposes. Well it's working. I can config my own computer
Am way of the beaten path? In a parallel universe? Or close?
Sorry for long email, but hopefully this will end up being a good tutorial for the next happless chap that can't rename his/her computer.

  • How do you change the computer name?

I just inherited my dads Mac G5 because he bought a new one for work and it still says the name is "James Whites Computer" and I want to change it to my name, how do I do that?
    Thanks.

At least as recently as 10.4, the computer name is in:
    System Preferences > Sharing
at the very top of the box.

  • How do I change the computer name of my iPhone?

In Mac OS X, we can go to System Preferences / Sharing, and set our Computer Name. Is there something like this for the iPhone? I'd like to rename mine to something more customized (and identifiable) for when it displays on a home network.

With iphone connected to itunes, double click on the name and change it - just like changing the name of a playlist.

  • How do I change my computer name or admin name

When I first got my imac it called itself "firsname lastname's imac"  (with my name, of course) and that apparently was my admin name too .. somehow I managed to change my admin name .. (I think),  and have been using that ever since.  However, whenever it is required, I am presented with the firstname lastname's imac, and a space for the password.. I have always jsut chaged this to my admin name and added the password.
However, I need to get my self back to java 6 and cannot do it because the terminal gives me no option to change from 'firstname lastname's imac' as the admin name .. so nothing I do will allow me to tell it to give me the java 6 back.
Please can someone help with this?

Very easy to do. Just go to: System Preferences › Sharing › Computer Name and change the name.

  • How to change your 'computer name' ?

I have just 'migrated' ( using the software install - by a firewire cable ) from my old PowerBook G4 to a MacBook Pro - Everything is fine except now my MacBook Pro is called PowerBook G4 15" on the start-up screen and system profiler title.
My question is how do you change this 'computer name' ?
    Many thanks in advance.
    Ti-Powerbook/MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

You can change your computer name in System Preferences (found under the Apple menu) in the Sharing pane. At the top of the pane it will say Computer Name: PowerBook G4 15".
Note that the name can contain spaces. Mine, for example, is Ministry of Magic.
Delete the current name and enter the new name. Note that you do not have to click the edit button out to the right. That is only useful if you want to change the bonjour address on your local subnet to be something different from NewComputerName.local (where NewComputerName is the new name you just changed it to.
    Hope this helps. Good luck.

  • How to change the computer name

I need to change the computer name but after this I cannot access to the historical data (printing alarms).
I have already changed the settings in Options->System and restarted the system.
With MAX 3.0 I can see that all the alarm records are stored with the old computer name \\computer name\process\....
How can I do to read the old alarms with the new computer name?
    Thank you
    Michael

    Hi,
When you change the computer name in Options>>System, you are not changing the name of the computer. Rather, you are telling Lookout to log to either a remote or local system. Here are the specifics:
    1. Computer Name: Name you want the traces to appear with (\\computer_name\process\...)
    2. Default Computer: Computer you want to log to. If the name listed here is different than your computer's name (as seen by Windows), then it will attempt to log directly to that remote machine.
    3. Default Path: Directory on either your local or remote machine that you want to log to.
To change the name of your local computer, you will need to do that in Windows. If you have WinXP, you can do this by right-clicking on My Computer and selecting Computer Name.
    Go
    od Luck

  • How do I change the computer's "Name"?

Hi - I recently upgraded from a Mac Mini to an iMac G5, and as I was setting up the G5 it prompted me thru a firewire data exchange from my old Mac Mini.
Now, in systems preferences and software setup, everything in the iMac keeps referring to "My Mac Mini". The mini must have asked me to name my computer (don't remember how or when), and moving everything to the new iMac renamed my iMac also.
How do I get my iMac to stop thinking that it is a mini? Where do I go to change the "computer name" on the iMac? - Thanks!

It's nice when one can solve a problem so definitively!

  • Changing the computer name in SAP R/3

Computer Name of the SAP R/3 server has been changed after the full installation of Oracle 9i and SAP R/3.
How to change the computer name after the SAP R/3 can start-up sucessfully?

    Hi
it is not possible after installing R/3, you cannot change the host name , as per my understanding because when you install it generates a solution manager key based on host name SID and instance number.
