It sounds like you are trying to make a purchase, but the two-step verification code is being sent to your old number. You can update your number using these steps:
Adding or Removing SMS Numbers
To add or remove an SMS-capable number from your account:
Go to My Apple ID (appleid.apple.com), click "Manage your Apple ID," and sign in.
Under Edit Your Apple ID, select "Password and Security."
Under Trusted Devices, select Manage.
Click Add to enter a new SMS-capable number for your Apple ID.
Click Remove next to the verified phone number associated with your Apple ID.

The fact that the problem only occurs when iphones are texting you leads me to think that iMessage may be the culprit. The fact that it is only iphones using SPRINT however is weird. Try turning imessage off on both yours and your sons phones to see if the problem persists. If it does, it may be a carrier problem.

Try turning off iMessage, wait a minute or two, then turn it back on. Also, confirm that your number is correct in Settings>Phone>My Number.

As far as I can tell you cannot delete the ID when Only one is listed.
This would suggest that you have to add the second (Correct) one and then delete the first (wrong) one.
I can't say I have tried this yet.

Excellent question Snn5! You can change your number as many times as needed. Just keep in mind that every time a number is changed there will be prorations on the bill based on the day of change. It will cost $15 if done by a VZW representative. Backup assistant must be reset. If phone is Android with Gingerbread or previous version, a factory reset will occur and all data will be lost. It is also possible for voicemail to reset when changing a number and if this happens, all voice messages will be lost and a new personal greeting must be setup.

You will wait for the rest of your life. You need to fix it; no one else will. To turn off "Find my iPhone" and its associated Activation Lock you need the Apple ID and password that were used to turn it on. If you don't know the Apple ID the phone is permanently unusable.
