The should be dropdown menu in the bottom of the screen. Or
at least it is where I have it - do not know where the deafault
place is.
This is what FreeHand Help file, accesible by pressing F1
(Win), has to say about units.
Setting units of measure
FreeHand offers precision and flexibility for entering
numeric values and displaying the rulers and grid:
You can choose from points, picas, inches, decimal inches,
millimeters, kyus, centimeters, or pixels to display in the rulers,
panels, and dialog boxes.
You can override the default unit of measure in numeric text
boxes. If you override the default unit of measure, FreeHand
automatically converts the value to the default unit of measure.
For example, entering 125m in a text box yields 125 millimeters
instead of 125 points; the 125-millimeter value is automatically
converted to 354.3307 points.
You can enter mathematical equations and combine units of
measure in numeric text boxes to have FreeHand automatically
calculate values for you.
You can define custom units of measure equivalent to other
units of measure, including meters, feet, miles, ciceros, and
didots. For more information, see Using the rulers.
To set the unit of measure for an entire document:
1
Click the Units pop-up menu in the Status toolbar (Windows)
or in the bottom of the Document window (Macintosh).
2
Select a unit of measure.
This setting affects almost all numeric text boxes except
the text-related settings based on points. For example, if the
Units pop-up menu is set to inches, entering 12 in a font size text
box yields 12-point type regardless of the unit of measure.
To set a unit of measure other than the default in a numeric
text box:
1
Enter a numeric value followed by the unit--i for inches, p
for picas, pt for points, m for millimeters, c for centimeters, and
x for pixels.
For example, enter 7p for 7 picas.
2
Press Enter (Windows) or Return (Macintosh).
To specify a value using mathematical functions:
1
Enter numeric values and create an equation using any of the
following mathematical symbols:
+ (addition)
– (subtraction)
* (multiplication)
/ (division)
Multiplication and division operations are evaluated before
addition and subtraction if you combine these operations.
You can combine different units in an equation. For example,
if the default unit of measure in the Units menu is set to points,
entering 4*50-49, 71+80, or 2i + p7 in a text box yields 151
points. If you enter an invalid equation or unit, FreeHand tries to
resolve it or enters 0.
2
Press Enter (Windows) or Return (Macintosh).

I tell you how. dumb luck. Certainly no thanks to "Apple Care" or maybe we should call them apple "careless." I told them my issue , and what I did to fix it so far. They tell me to delete the ipod photo cache and resync. They kill me.
What kills me even more is * I preface this by stating that I am in no way a racist, and this has nothing to do with race, color, or creed, it has to do with getting good customer service. I, myself, am disabled. I have an artificial pelvis and left leg. I know my limits, you won’t see me trying to get a job where my disability affects the job I was doing. I running any marathons any time soon*
I’d call apple care again, but I’m not fluent in some of the languages the telephone customer service agents speak. Funny, you’d think that apple would try and get customer service people that can be understood over the phone. It’s like hiring a blind guy to drive a school bus. They will get you somewhere, but probably not where you wanted to go. Maybe we should call the Apple HR dept and have them hire some deaf people to field service calls, would be just as smart as hiring someone who was mute, or in Their case someone that can not be understood by an English speaking person. Just my two cents. Feel free to pass it on.

  • Picas and Inches - How to change?

I have just downloaded InD and cannot find how to change picas into inches - previous posts say find 'Preferences' ex Edit, but there is no such thing in the drop down menu? Help!

You must be on a Mac, and the Preferences are where they are for *all* Mac software: under the "InDesign" menu.

I am creating a print document - the page setup seems to automatically convert from inches back to picas. When I go to the tutorial on creating a document, however, the tutorial shows dimensions in inches. I assume there is some kind of preferences setting but I have not been able to find it.

I live in the UK : How do i change the default unit of measurement from inches to metric?

    Terence
Thanks for your answer to my question. I have tried what you suggested and 'metric' was already set as the default so unfortunately, it has not solved my problem which is when I set the dimensions for the print size before printing, I have to change from 'inches' to 'cms' for each photo every time. I was hoping that I would be able to set 'cms' as the default.
    Hope you can help me.

How do I change page setup print margins from Milileters to inches?

This has to do with selecting the paper size in the print setup. If you select a (European) paper format that uses millimeters then the margins are in millimeters. To get inches just select an American paper format.

  • How to change measurements from inches to mm? Imperial to metric iPad

Hi just downloaded uk iworks pages etc, how do you change imperial to metric in rulers?

From what I can fathom, The ruler and measurements is determined by what International settings are selected. Apple has "standardized" these settings from international agreements? I would like to see the Canadian settings altered to allow for Imperial measurements within the Canadian settings on the iPad. In order to get Imperial on the ruler, I have to select United States International, but then the Dictionary is set to US and all the Canadian spellings are wrong. I would prefer to be able to select the Canadian international with either Imperial or metric settings as both measurements are still standard in Canada.

  • Change margins to inches

How do I change the margins to inches when setting up my brochure?

When you create a new InDesign document, just enter inches in the margin fields either as 1in or 1" (for 1 inch). When you leave the field it'll show the equivalent picas or points.
If you want to force InDesign to always use inches, select Preferences from the Edit menu, then select General. You'll see the dialog used to set Preferences. Go to the Units & Increments settings. You can change the units used to Inches and that will be the default in the future.

  • Changing p0 to inches

How do I change the p0 in the document set up to inches? I already tried changing in the preferences, but it reverts back to the p0 which I don't even know what that is.

Consider the professional benefits of knowing and using the Pica (and its sub-unit, points) measurement system:
    1. PostScript computer drawing language is founded on Picas/Points at 6 picas per inch / 12 points per pica / 72 points per inch. Therefore, all the math within InDesign is most accurate at its native measurement system.
    2. Bear in mind that this electronic-era Pica/Point system is different (slightly, at 72.27 points to the inch) from the Pica system of metal typesetting days.
    3. Why use it if North Americans are born and raised on inches? Why use it if Europeans are familiar with the metric system? (And I'm not trying to define all parts of the globe ... this is just a rough illustration.) The main benefit is the simplicity of math that is based on sixes and twelves as opposed to twos and fours (inches) and tens (metric). A unit of measure based on sixes and twelves can easily be divided by 2, 3, and 4. This makes a tri-fold brochure or a three-column newsletter easier to measure. Ask yourself: Have you ever measured a third of an inch? Likely No! Imperial inches often bring you to fractions like 11/32. Can you type that into a dialog box field easily? No! Can you divide an 8.5 x 11 inch page easily into thirds without painful repeating decimal inches. No again! Can you even calculate that in your head? My experience says no, you cannot. But it is all easy, whole numbers when you use Picas.
    4. Professionals in the printing and graphic design industry in the US where I live commonly work in Picas/Points and are natively comfortable with inches, too. Maybe you should consider the two to be close cousin measurement systems, affording simple math advantages sometimes in one; sometimes in the other. It is trivial in at least two ways to change the measurement system of any document: Either right-click the ruler's Zero point, or type the explicit measurement system into a dialog box field. There is even a shortcut for it (Cmd+Opt+Shift+U, I think.)
I have to comment on the claim that you haven't come across picas since 1998. As the native measurement system of all PostScript Adobe software, it is certainly not dead. It is a reborn innovation. The fact that many aren't using it simply indicates the enormous paucity of education in our industry. With the 1980s, many seasoned folks retired when computers came along. The next generations were mainly self-taught, and this has left big experience gaps for us all to re-discover.
Next time you encounter Picas/Points, give them a hug, why don't you?!

  • How can I change the page size of a pdf so i can view it on my iphone more clearly?

How can I change the page size of a pdf so i can view it on my iphone more clearly?

I think there may be more to this question than you say.
If your PDF page is say, 8 x 12 inches, and you found a way to scale it to 25%, changing it to 2 x 3 inch, shrinking everything on the page to quarter size - wouldn't it look exactly the same on the iPhone? It's just going to be the same as zooming.
Or were you hoping for something more like in Word, where changing the page size keeps everything the same size and spreads it over more pages? That isn't something you can do.
