How do I change the aspect ratio on Final Cut Pro X?

Whenever I upload new media (regardless of what ratio it was filmed in) it plays in letterbox format. I would like to change the aspect ratio to 16:9. Thanks.

Please open the clip in the QT player and post a screen shot of the movie inspector. Post a screen **** of what you're seeing in the viewer.
You keep saying upload, do you mean import?

  • How can I change the aspect ratio of an image display

I am snapping a sequence of images and using imgPlot to diplay the images. However, due to my camera specifications [it's a Pulnix 9701 with Pixel Size 11.6μm (H) X 13.3μm (V)], the image I get displayed is elongated in the horizontal direction, i.e. if I snap an image of a square, I get a rectangle on my computer display.
How can I change the aspect ratio of the display on my computer? The only parameters I have seen so far just control what portion of the image is acquired or diplayed, but none actually changes the aspect ratio.
Thanks in advance for any help.

If you are using an analog camera, you can set the aspect ratio in MAX. This will correct for non-square pixels.
If you are using a digital camera, I don't think there is a way to fix it during acquisition. You could resample the image to correct the ratios, but that would be a slow, time consuming process.
One other possibility is that your computer monitor is in a mode which is not a standard 4x3 configuration. For example 640x480 and 800x600 are 4:3 ratios. 1200x1024 is not, which tends to distort your displayed images.

  • How can I change the aspect ratio

I connected my new Apple TV 2 to an LCD projector (Epson 9300) using a Belkin HDMI-to-DVI cable. The projector supports a variety of resolutions, but the aspect ratio is fixed at 4:3. The picture is therefore stretched vertically. How can I change the aspect ratio on the Apple TV?

How can I change the aspect ratio on the Apple TV?
You can't. The TV device plays content at the encoded aspect ratio. It is up to your viewing device to alter the display aspect if it can. Your primary options are to use a different viewing device capable of multiple aspect ratios, scaling, and/or zoom effects or you could simply letterbox your content when you encode it.

  • How to change DV/DVCPRO video to 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio in Final Cut Pro X?

I shot some DV video footage on a Canon XL2 in 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio mode. I captured it on a Firestore and imported it into Final Cut Pro X, and it is now being displayed in an incorrect standard 4:3 aspect ratio.
How can I change the aspect ratio of the video within FCPX once I've imported it?
I've tried playing with the Spatial Conform setting for the video file, but that keeps it in a standard aspect ratio and fits or fills the video into a different aspect ratio. So that's not the answer.
I've tried an old trick I used when working with DV widescreen video and iDVD, but this process doesn't fix the aspect ratio in FCPX. Here's the article for your reference:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2179
Did Apple forget that DV/DVCPRO video--although standard def--can be displayed in 4:3 or 16:9? It seems to force it to 4:3.
    Thanks.

    @daguerratype
The Spatial Conform is one of the things I tried. Unfortunately none of its settings fixed the aspect ratio. When I choose "Fit", it simply shows it as 4:3 and leaves left and right black borders on a 16:9 timeline. When I choose "Fill", it zooms the 4:3 video and chops off the top and bottom parts.
    @Thomas Emmerich
This is a decent workaround. Fortunately my clips are named in such a way that I can easily drop them all in the timeline and do a Command-F (Find) to search by clip name, highlight all of them in the search results, then use the Inspector to modify the properties of all the clips at once. I have to change X-scale to 133% and Spatial Conform to "Fit", and now at least it fits the 16:9 timeline properly.
Thanks to both replies. I still hope Apple adds a way to fix the clip in the Event browser so that I don't have to do this workaround.

  • How to change the white balance in Final Cut Pro?

What is the best way to change the white balance in Final Cut Pro? I have some clips which are to green. I would like if possible something which might resemble the Camera Raw dialogue in Photoshop. Any way of measuring color (RGB values)?

There is some specific help in this trainng book:
    http://www.amazon.com/Apple-Pro-Training-Correction-Studio/dp/0321635280/
When using Color Corrector 3-Way to correct for a green tint, the bullet points are something like this:
    1) After loading the clip into the Viewer and applying the CC3W filter to the clip, open your scopes and move the window so you can see the Viewer (with the CC3W tab open) and the scopes
    2) First, if necessary, adjust the white and black levels using the video level sliders below the white and black color wheels (I use the slider above the scopes to make the trace in th4 scopes as bright as it will go without blooming)
    3) Looking at the Parade scope, the idea is to balance the whites, mids, and blacks on each color display (red, green and blue). So you watch the Parade and drag the dot that is in the center of each color wheel (starting with the whites) away from the color of your tint (in your case, green). Drag the dot until the highest portions in all three Parade displays are as even as you can make them
    4) Then do the same with the mids, using the Mids color wheel, moving its dot away from green
    5) Do the same thing with the blacks
    6) Double check the image on an external video display that is properly adjusted using color bars from Final Cut
NOTE: This short reply is not sufficient to fully explain this technique, and you really need to understand Color Theory before doing this anyway. That's why I recommended the training book.

  • How do I change the aspect ratio of source video in the event library?

I’ve imported video to iMovie 08 from a Canon Mini DV MD235 video camera. The video is recorded in widescreen format and plays back in widescreen when viewed from the iMovie event library (prior to doing any video editing). However, when I delete rejected frames from any particular video clip in the event library the video clip is automatically pillarboxed (i.e. switched from widescreen to 4:3 format). This squashes the video horizontally, stretches it vertically and leaves vertical black bars to the left and right of the video during playback. This automatic change in aspect ratio is occurring to the source video in the event library.
I’d be grateful for any help / advice on how I can convert the edited clips back to widescreen aspect ratio, so they display in the *event library* as they did when first imported into iMovie.

I don’t really want to clog up my hard drive with unwanted video and it’s easier to edit it from within iMovie.
Have you considered manually importing only portions of the clips you actually plan to use? Or, if you must import the entire clip, have you considered trimming externally in an application like MPEG Streamclip which will allow you to set frame level in/out points and then perform a "Save As..." operation that stores the select range of frames to an MOV file container retaining the proper flag?
Is there anything I can do from within iMovie to activate the 16:9 setting for these as yet unedited clips, so the same pillarboxing doesn’t happen?
Not sure what you mean by "unedited" here. If the files have been destructively split, the flag is gone and there is nothing you can do about it but re-compress. If you mean they are imported but as of yet whole and still contain their flags, then you have two options. The first is to edit non-destrctively within iMovie '08 and the second would be to do the trimming externally.
This second option is really fairly simple. Just close iMovie '08. Open MPEG Streamclip and load a clip you want to trim. Set your in and pout points, select the "Save As..." option, and store the files in the original Events folder with a new name. I would also recommend you perform these trims in their original time sequence so the "creation" date time groups (Finder attributes) are in time order also. When done with the loaded clip either delete it from the "Event" folder or move it to an archival location. When done with the last clip, close MPEG Streamclip, delete the Cache and Thumbnail folders from the Event folder, open iMovie '08 again, and go get a cup of coffee or tea while the files are re-thumbnailing. DO NOT DO THIS TO ANY EVENT WHICH CONTAINS FILES ALREADY USED IN ANY PROJECT. (I.e., this must be done before you start the actual project editing process.)
It seems odd to me that iMovie is doing this.
I suspect that as the application was originally written as an NLE, non-destructive, "by reference" application, the writers/updaters "overlooked" this facet when adding a "destructive" routine and did not provide for checks of this flag nor provide for copying it re-written segments.

  • How do you change the aspect ratio of a video from 4:3 to 16:9?

    in final cut pro x

Aspect ratio is set automatically.  But, there are times when someone messed something up in a clip before you got it.  I recently had that happen, 16:9 HD was squashed to 4:3 SD, but you can deal with that easily.  You can change it with the Transform > Scale > X parameter.  In my specific case, I set Scale X parameter to 134% and was done with it.

  • How can I publish the "levels" effect to final cut pro x?

    Hello,
I'm trying to publish all of the color correction plugins from motion into final cut pro x, the "levels" effect in particular. I have read the instructions in the manual and published all the parameters and then saved it to send it over to final cut pro x but the problem that I'm having is when I open it up in final cut pro x all the parameters are there except for the histogram and its controls, what am I doing wrong and how can I fix it? Thanks.

The short answer is you can't publish the levels graphic UI (you can, but it doesn't work in FCPX - all you get is the collection of the individual slider controls.)
You can create a shape with a gradient fill. Set a middle color tab and a second opacity tab. You can use Link parameter behaviors from the color/opacity tabs to the the filter > Levels parameter controls. Use the color tabs for Black In, Gamma and White In. Use the Opacity tabs for Black Out and White Out.
You can publish the shape's gradient.
The problem is, to publish this UI, you're publishing an actual gradient and people will be able to make alterations to the gradient (it won't change how it operates the levels controls.) The other problem with it is that it is possible for users to accidentally pull off or add new tabs which will immediately break the effect (and immediate "undo" should repair it though). Then, figuring out how to manipulate the Gamma control is going to be a trick (I haven't figured out yet.) The values go from 5 (all the way left) to 0 (all the way right - with 1 the 50% mark) for the Gamma control itself, but the UI controller (the middle tab on the gradient) moves the control in the opposite direction and the values are logarithmic in scale. You can use the mid-tab control on the gradient linked to the gamma parameter value, but it won't behave the same way as you would expect a genuine levels control to behave (left to right goes from black to white when the expectation would be the opposite.)
A gradient with links into the filter is about the only way to go if you want it give it a shot.

  • How can I change the aspect ratio in imovie 10.0.1

After importing a movie in to the new updated version of iMovie which is 10.0.1 I noticed all the frames were elongated ( stretched out of proportion ), can some one tell me please how to keep the original ratio when importing or and how to change it after importing.
I first thought that maybe it was just how iMovie iMovie shows this aspect only when editing and that when the move was finalised it would revert back to its original ratio with any changes that i made, Only after two and a half hours of finalising this was not the case and the movie plays back stretched.
    HELP!

    You can't.
    iM10 is 16:9 only.

  • How can i change the aspect ratio in Event Library?

the videos i imported to iMovie from iMac look horizontally distorted. i took them with an iPhone4. when importing them, i chose 16:9 ratio, this may be the reason. i can not change the ratio to 3:2. Thanks.

    Hi likethis,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
The iPhone 4 records at HD 720 p, so that is why your clips are distorted.

  • How do i change the aspect ratio??

Hey guys, I'm having a big problem. I'm an intern working for http://www.bartlettinteractive.com, and I've been editing a video in their copy of final cut express. The footage is shot with two different cameras, one is mine and the other is his, mine shoots in HD, and I imported it as 960 x 540 video. The other shot in 720 x 480. Finally we used a bunch of photos shot with a camera at something like 1600 x 1200. My problem is that now, after I've basically finished the video, my boss wants me to export into 16:9 when the entire time the canvas has been showing the video in 4:3 because of the way the flash player on their website is set up. Can someone please help me with changing the entire video's aspect ratio?

    Hi(Bonjour)!
    You don't need to.
You can check the sequence's anamorphic property in browser.
Or you can create an anamorphic DV sequence, insert your edited sequence into it (get the squashed result) and export the movie as self contained one. But it will be encoded to DV NTSC. It's better to export with quicktime conversion when going with flash.

  • How do I deactivate the serial for my Final Cut Pro?

Hello, I have decided to sell my Mac Book Pro and am wondering how to deactivate the serial number for it. I have the serial for my version of fcp 6.0 on two computers already, I would like to be able to put the serials I purchased onto one of my own computers sometime in the future. I have already deactivated and uninstalled all of my Adobe products, but it is not obvious in FCP how this is done. This same problem exists for DVD Studio Pro... can anyone help?

    Great minds think alike!
You never know how much other personal info resides on a computer, keychains, passswords, internet histories and caches, address books, etc, etc.
Put in the install disc, boot from it, erase the hard drive, do the install from however many discs it takes, and when they tell you to restart your computer to finish the install process, just shut it down (no restart.)
The buyer will boot it and get all the registration info etc, just like it was a new machine right from the factory. (Thanks to Brian Connor for that install tip.)

  • How do I trim the end off my Final Cut Pro X timeline?

When I did my rough, rough cut, my timeline was 10 minutes long. I have since edited my video down to five minutes. Now I have five minutes of dead space trailing my five minute video. How do I snip those five minutes off the end?

"Select" and "Delete" worked for me... but one important detail.
The "Delete" key above my arrows keys (and under the "help" key) did nothing.
The "Delete" key (aka backspace) actually worked.
