How do I change the default windows when starting indesign

The default when I start up Indesign is “only the applications bar is showing”. I would like to be able to change the default to having the Tools and Control showing as well as a few windows like pages, styles, swatches, hyperlinks – not ALL of the windows. I’ve tried setting this up when I first open up Indesign and no documents open. But it still changes back to the default whrn I reopen Indesign. Is there anyway to change this?

Having white screens is too bright for my eyes!! I always change the default window color in Windows (hiss hiss) to a light shade of gray and that setting carries thru to all windows (i.e. Word, Excel, notepad....). Personally, I wouldn't trust it, and I don't hesitate to try these things most of the time even though they sometimes cause problems. But I've used Unsanity products before and they all require installing a preference pane called APE; Application Enhancement module, and that thing caused me lots of problems for my system, lots of crashes and flakiness. I won't use it again.
But I'm sure there are lots of people using it happily, but if you don't feel confident in dealing with system problems stay away from anything that adds a system preference pane or goes up in the top menu bar at the top (Apple icons excepted) or has to start up with the system.

How do I change the default quality when saving a series of edited photos in Photoshop Elements 9

Say I have saved a series of edited photos using Quality 5. I then change to saving a new series using Quality 10. Each time I save a photo the quality appears as 5 and I have to change it manually to 10. Eventually the default quality will automatically change to 10, but it takes a fair numbers of saves to do this. How do I get the default quality to change as soon as I want it changed rather than having to wait for the software to finally do it itself?

Interesting point. My situation is where I change the default quality then carry on using the new quality without closing down the program. What you are suggesting is that changing the default quality, closing down the program, then restarting it might get the quality change to stick. I'll give it a whirl and see what happens.

The mail window opens up very small and every time I must increase the size manually. I want to be able to set it so it opens larger or at least opens to the saem size as a previous mail window, which is what Mail used to do.

There is a workaround to move from 1.5 version to the older 1.4 version. But this could be specific to the browser setting the JRE version.

Is FF downloading the file as a .txt file? If so, go to "Folder Options" in the windows control panel. Click on the "File Types" tab. Scroll down until you reach the TXT file extension. Look to see what that extension opens with (lower part of panel). It probably shows notepad. Click on the <Change> button. Scroll down until you find "Microsoft Word." Select it and click the <OK> button. That should show the TXT extension is now associated with Microsoft Word. Click the <Close> button at the bottom of the panel.
If FF is downloading the file as any other type, use the same process as above except look for the corresponding extension instead. If the extension is not listed click on the <New> button and create an association using the extension in the file name and then associate it with MS Word.

The feature you are talking about in System Preferences does work and is not related in any way to the one at startup.

You don' t have to. Did you have a look at my post just above yours? With a double click you can have your restart without opening the last open windows. That's less than clicking the apple icon and selecting "restart" or "shut down" and then clicking "Restart" or "Shutdown" again.
