How do I change the desktop image?

In System preferences/desktop and screensaver/desktop I presumed that I could specify a directory for my desktop background, but when I try an add a directory to the list it says:
'The folder you selected is already present in the picture source list.'
It isn't, but there are two Aperture libraries listed (neither of which I can delete using the '-' button
Can I add and remove directories from the list?

You might also try deleting the preference file for the Desktop pictures, which will return you to the default state, so you can start over. You should then be able to add the folders you want. Here's the file to remove:
"/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist"
If that doesn't do it, you could try cleaning out the Desktop pix cache files, and remove the plist again. The cache files are located inside this folder:
"/Users/yourname/Library/Caches/Desktop"
I suspect something is wrong with plist, since I also have Aperture installed, and what SHOULD appear in the Desktop pane is a single entry for "Aperture Projects" with a disclosure triangle listing the Library, All Projects, All Photos, individual projects, and so on. Under the Aperture Projects you should have the Folders category, also a disclosure triangle, and containing the list of folders you have added.

  • How do I change the desktop image on the ThunderBolt display?

    It doesn't even match MacBook's desktop image...

    I have this problem on again - off again. I have five Desktops and sometimes a couple will default to the 'galaxy' background. I simply choose another image, then choose the image that I actually want and - presto - I have the background that I want! Note that I have to do this for each Desktop. But it should work - simply choosing the one you actually want first doesn't do it for me - I have to sort of choose one that I don't want and then one that I do.
    Some sort of bug, I'm sure, but not a big one.

  • How do I change the desktop Icon for an external hard drive?  I have gone to "Get Info" and tried dragging and dropping  several formats of pictures and the icon changes to the generic image of that file type.

    how can I change the desktop icon for an external hard drive.  Using LaCies and Dimple hard drives.

    One of the things I've found with OS X (at least with Snow Leopard, which is my first excursion into OS X), is that all too often the thumbnail displayed on a file, whether a file created or one downloaded, is a false thumbnail. That is, when you do a Get Info on the file the icon in the upper left is the generic icon for that file type, rather than the thumbnail displayed in Finder. Makes it a bit difficult to copy.
    Apparently Finder uses Preview in the background to generate the displayed thumbnail without actually creating one.
    What I've resorted to doing, particularly with graphic images, is to process them with GraphicConverter - I have its prefs set to automatially add thumbnails and previews. With an individual file this means opening it in GC and doing a Save As. However, a much easier and faster way is when there are two or more such files; I put them in a common folder and drop the folder onto GC. GC then opens them in a catalog view, in the process adding real thumbnails and previews to each automatically. Doesn't take long to do several hundred files that way.

    Downloaded a trial version of the "Living Earth Desktop" screensaver and cannot get rid of it. I deleted the download and cannot find it anywhere else on my mac. This is the website.

    IF you know the exact file name of the download, you can search for it in the spotlight.
    (This icon) in the upper right corner.
    If you don't know the exact file name, you may have to redownload it so you can see it.
    I would also try doing a reboot after you change your desktop background to what you want.

  • Software/script/automator to change the desktop image periodically

    Hello,
    Right now Mac OSX has the great feature that allows you to change the desktop image at max once a day. I would like to have an image changed once every two days. Then I would like that image to re-appear after 1 week. Then after a month. And then after 4 month.
    Little more to what OS X can do.

    I got this from this [little apple tutorial|http://www.apple.com/applescript/features/system-prefs.html]. it explains how to script system preferences (to the extent that it's scriptable).
    if you run
    <pre style="
    font-family: Monaco, 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;
    font-size: 10px;
    margin: 0px;
    padding: 5px;
    border: 1px solid #000000;
    width: 720px;
    color: #000000;
    background-color: #ADD8E6;
    overflow: auto;"
    title="this text can be pasted into the Script Editor">
    tell application "System Events"
    -- GET DESKTOP PICTURE SETTINGS
    tell current desktop
    get properties
    --> returns: {display name:"Color LCD", random order:false, pictures folder:file "Mac OS X:Library:Desktop Pictures:", picture rotation:0, class:desktop, change interval:60.0, picture:file "Mac OS X:Library:Desktop Pictures:Aqua Blue.jpg"}
    end tell
    end tell
    </pre>
    it will list the properties of the current desktop and *change interval* is one of them.
    you can also get it from the apple script dictionary for System Events.

    Hi,
    If you mean to customize the desktop, you can use themes, desktop backgrounds, window colors, and screen savers to personalize your desktop.
    If you want some free themes and desktop backgrounds to use, there are lots to choose from in the
    Personalization Gallery.

  • Dual monitors with lion how do i change the desktop for the 2nd

    i have a macbook pro with a 2nd display monitor.  I upgraded to Lion.  How do I change the desk top on the 2nd montior from this ugly grey material look?

    To further clarify what Thomas said, when you access the "Desktop and Screen Saver" control pane with both monitors on and active, you should see desktop selection panes appear on both screens.  Mouse over to the other screen, choose a desktop on that screen's pane, and the desktop image that you chose should be set for that desktop only.
    (This also applies if you use more than two screens.)

  • How do I change the desktop picture on *all* windows with Lion?

    I'm sure I'm just missing a simple setting, but ...  I changed the desktop background to something I found I thought I'd like, using right click/use as desktop background.  Didn't like it.  Went to System prefs to change it, and selected the Pond Reeds pic that comes preloaded with Lion.  Great!  Except it only changed it to that in one workspace.  All the others still have the background I don't like, and going to each workspace, right clicking and choosing "change desktop picture" just shoots me back to the system prefs workspace and doesn't change anything.  What's the right answer   (It's an older MacBook Pro, but running Lion, just upgraded to it a few days ago.)

    Thank you!!!  I knew it must be something simple, that I just haven't had time to figure out yet (the day after I upgraded, my son went into the hospital and had to have heart surgery, so I haven't spent a lot of time getting to know Lion.).  Your help is much much appreciated!

  • How do I change the JPEG image size in PSE-12 when opening from RAW

    Switching from PSE-9 to PSE-12. When a JPEG image is opened RAW in PSE-12 the size is 18.72" Wide x 12.48" high 300 DPI. The same image in PSE-9 is 23.4" wide x 15.6" High 240 DPI. How do I get PSE-12 to open the image as in PSE-9?

    Uncheck the boxes at the bottom of the dialog Scale styles and resample Image so that only constrain proportions is checked. If you the change the resolution box from 240 to 300 you will get back to your original dimensions.
    This is a meaningless thing to do, you still have the exact same number of pixels, you have only changed the metadata number in the file for ppi, and your prints are not affected by this number.
    You could also use the same method to change the dimensions to 6 x 4 or 9 x 6 etc.
    There are some cases (actually most cases) where you need to CROP the photo to change the dimensions, when the aspect ratio of the original photos is different than the aspect ratio of the final photo; the specific case in 99jon's example is the only case you ever want to change dimensions using Image->Resize->Image Size, where the aspect ratio doesn't change from 6x4 to 9x6 (or 12x8 or 18x12 or ...), and even then, you could do the same thing simply by telling the printer the size you want, you don't really need to do anything in PSE.
