How do I change the location of my iTunes Library?

I upgraded my iTunes to 8. This version creates a new library in C:users/myname/itunes/itunes music. I had my former library in an external HD, and I'm not able to use it as the Library to this version. Can someone provide me suggestions?

You can change the location of your iTunes Library by doing a shift key start.
Hold down the shift key and start iTunes. Keep holding down the shift key until you are prompted to choose a library.
Navigate to the iTunes folder on your external drive and choose iTunes Library.itl.
If you did not have you library databases on the external drive post back, giving the location of the iTunes Library.itl that you want to use and the location of your iTunes Music folder.

  • HT1364 I am trying to change the location of my itunes library and the library doesn't copy to the new location.

I am trying to change the location of my itunes library and the library doesn't copy to the new location.  I followed the steps in the help message (HT1364) exactly but I am not prompted to consolidate in the new location.  Any suggestions?

Hi ed2345 and diesel vdub,  when I consolidate, the files start copying to the new location and part way through I get a message that the copying failed (-50) even though all of the files are already in place in the new location.  Should I just delete the itunes in the new location and manually copy the files again?  But in itunes, I have indicated that the new location is on the external hard drive but itunes seems to ignore that and still looks for itunes in the original location on my internal hard drive.  I disabled the location of itunes in the old location (by labelling itunes as "itunes old") and it tried to create a new itunes at the old location and prompted me to import music and videos from a CD or other source.  I hope I am making sense.

  • How do I change the location of where ITunes stores backups on Windows 8

Hello, a further question for you on this topic please: how does one perform this on a windows 8 pc please?
I am following the above instructions (but substituting file names where necessary) but getting 'access is denied' after pressing enter. I've made sure all the folders and subfolders are no longer read only but it didn't help.
    Thanks in advance

The way to do this is to move the backup data to your D: drive and then intercept requests for data on the original path to the new location by way of a junction. These are the necessary steps on a Windows 7 system.
Open a command prompt by hitting the start button and typing CMD<Enter> in the search box that opens up.
To move the current backup folder from C: to D: type in this command and press <Enter>
    Move "C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" "D:\Backup"
Where <User> is your Windows user name.
To make iTunes look for the data in the new location type in this command and press <Enter>
    MkLink /J "C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" "D:\Backup"
If your external drive has a different letter or you already have a folder called "Backup" then edit "D:\Backup" accordingly in both commands.
Note that while this works with device backups the same technique cannot be used to distribute sections of an iTunes library.

how do i stop my itunes from changing the location of my itunes media.  i have it saved on a external HD and it keeps changing back to my local drive with out being told

No, an external drive will not always be mounted. If the drive goes to sleep, it can unmount, or it may unmount for other reasons. As Chris said, confim that the drive is mounted and active before launching iTunes.
    Regards.

  • How can I change the location for the backup from iphone to itunes?

How can I change the location for the backup from iphone to itunes? I want to backup to my external harddisk and not the computer itself. How do I do it?

Moving the iOS device backup location
Open a command prompt by hitting the start button and typing CMD<Enter> in the search box that opens up, or with Start > Run on older Windows.
To move the current backup folder from C: to D: (for example) type in this command and press <Enter>
    Move "C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" "D:\Backup"
Where <User> is your Windows user name.
To make iTunes look for the data in the new location type in this command and press <Enter>
    MkLink /J "C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" "D:\Backup"
If your preferred drive has a different letter or you already have a folder called "Backup" then edit "D:\Backup" accordingly in both commands.
If you have Windows XP then you'll need a third-party tool such as Junction to link the two locations together instead of the MkLink command. The source folder is C:\Documents and Settings\<User>\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup

  • How can I change the location of my Backups? (e.g. Word files)

I am wondering how I can change the location of my word doc. back ups. Everytime I make a new word document my computer makes a duplicate titled: " Backup [then the title I gave the word document]." I was wondering if I could make a single file to store all of the back ups. Currently they are in every file that the original is in. Thanks!

It depends on which version of Windows you are using but it will intitally be downloaded to the C: drive.  The data is initially stored in the following locations:
    Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\[user]\Application Data\com.adobe.downloadassistant.AdobeDownloadAssistant\Local Store
Windows 7 and Vista:  C:\Users\[login]\AppData\Roaming\com.adobe.downloadassistant.AdobeDownloadAssistant\Local Store
You will need to get enough free space on the C: drive to allow the download.

How can I change the location name my iPhone pulls up when I am home. The info that pulls is not correct?

If the size of the iPhone backup is putting you over the edge you have bigger problems than just this backup. You really need to solve the fundamental problem of your C: partition being too small. Even if you could solve the iPhone problem something else will come up soon that will again challenge your disk space. New drives can be had for well under $100, and even a 500 GB drive is only a little more than $100. This would be a good time to upgrade. You can even clone your current drive AND increase the partition size in one step with disk imaging software such as Acronis True Image.

Someone else in the forum told me how to do this.  If you have Onyx on your system then select Parameters, iTunes and turn off high contrast mode.  If you don't have Onyx, I'd suggest getting it.  It is freeware and used to help maintain your system.  Good luck

How do I change the chapter order in itunes 11.0.4? The book chapters used to look like the playlists in music. You could ;change how it was sorted by the name time, artist etc. Now there isn't a catagory label and the background is the same color as the background of the book photo.

  • How do i change the artist view in itunes 11 back to the original view?

How do i change the artist view in itunes 11 back to the original or pre itunes 11 view?

You can't. iTunes 11 has different ways of viewing your library from earlier builds. You can restore some of the look/function of the old version by turning on the menu bar (ctrl-b), sidebar (ctrl-s) and also clicking the magnifying glass then unticking Search Entire Library to restore the old search behaviour.
If that isn't enough the see this post on how to roll back to iTunes 10.7.

  • I want to move the location of my iTunes library music files. At present they are all on my time machine . I want to move them all to my imac. Can I do that and keep all my playlists and play counts? Thanks in advance

I want to move the location of my iTunes library music files. At present they are all on my time machine . I want to move them all to my imac. Can I do that and keep all my playlists and play counts? Thanks in advance
its 1000s of songs . Originally I used the time machine as a networked drive but it can cause the songs to pause so I'm thinking it would be better to have the songs on the internal imac drive
how can I move the songs so I can re-open iTunes and the playlists (with plays in the 100s) find the song in the new place?

Do you mean on your Time Machine backup drive? Or are you actually accessing the backup? In either case you shouldn't be doing that. If you haven't space on your HDD to store the iTunes Library, then at least put it on another external drive.
Since you did not provide any information about what's actually "on my time machine," here's what you would do. The entire iTunes folder should be stored in the /Home/Music/ folder. Within that folder you would have three folders: imm Media, iTunes, and iTunes Playlists.

  • I want to move the location of my iTunes Library db file but keep the media in it's existing location. Is this possible?

I want to move the location of my iTunes Library db files to a new location without moving the whole lot, including my Media file [Music, Films etc etc files]... in this case I want to move the Library db files to my iCloud Folder so I have a backup of the Library db File [ good idea huh :-) ]  and I should be able to open iTunes whether the media can be seen at that point or not.  is it possible to just move the Library files and then tell iTunes where they are so it can launch iTunes?
Is this just a case of cut and paste the Library files to the new location, then updating config in iTunes?
This may be a silly question but in my book, no question is silly if it needs to be asked.
    Any ideas, advise welcomed.

Thanks Chris but I think I have not explained it well enough.
    This...
I am using an iCloud Folder on my local Mac hard drive. iCloud Folder syncs with iCloud and works like a backup. It is a subscription service that Apple offer.
You should be adding them to iCloud, not your local drive.
Yes I understand how it works.
The iCloud folder on the local drive is (and should be) managed by the iCloud drive/OS, not you.
You are simply trying to work around iCloud drive.
I just want to know if I can move the iTunes Library cb files to a new folder/location on my macs local hard drive
... and tell iTunes where to look for the Library so that it can launch / startup
The iTunes library.itl file is part of the iTunes library.
I already back up my actual media files (music etch) by other methods.
You should back up the entire iTunes folder, not just the media.
If you wna to backup the iTune slibrary.itl, just copy it to the iCloud drive on the left side of aFinder window.
You don't need to go (and shouldn't) into the iCloud folder in your user library.
This is what the "guru" will tell you.
